En-Route Planning Of Multi-Destination Public-Transport Trips Using Smartphones, Subeh Chowdhury, Nasser Giacaman
En-Route Planning Of Multi-Destination Public-Transport Trips Using Smartphones, Subeh Chowdhury, Nasser Giacaman
Journal of Public Transportation
Public transport travelers require well-integrated, real-time information systems to use a network. The objective of this study was twofold: (1) to develop a model to determine the effect of personalized information provision through smartphones on user ability to plan multi-destination trips, and (2) to understand user perception of riding public transport aided by real-time, multi-destination trip-planning smartphone applications. Auckland Pioneer was developed for multi-destination trip planning and integrates real-time public transport services with search functions for places of interest. A test trial was conducted in Auckland, New Zealand, and the findings show the effects of the application on multi-destination trip …
Analyzing And Assessing The Experience Of Traveling By Public Transport, Martin Schiefelbusch
Analyzing And Assessing The Experience Of Traveling By Public Transport, Martin Schiefelbusch
Journal of Public Transportation
The experience of traveling (as an aggregate of sensory impressions in relation to social and psychological needs) has so far rarely been considered as a factor influencing travel and modal choice. This paper proposes a practical way to disaggregate the “travel experience” into its separate components and suggests a procedure to assess the “experiential qualities” of (mainly public) transport services. This assessment allows planners to compare different user groups’ expectations as well as the provider’s strategic objectives. The procedure then is discussed in relation to several recent strands of transport/mobility research that are approaching the travel experience from different points …
Supervised Machine Learning For Classification Of The Electrophysiological Effects Of Chronotropic Drugs On Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes, Christopher Heylman, Rupsa Datta, Agua Sobrino, Steven George, Enrico Gratton
Supervised Machine Learning For Classification Of The Electrophysiological Effects Of Chronotropic Drugs On Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes, Christopher Heylman, Rupsa Datta, Agua Sobrino, Steven George, Enrico Gratton
Biomedical Engineering
Supervised machine learning can be used to predict which drugs human cardiomyocytes have been exposed to. Using electrophysiological data collected from human cardiomyocytes with known exposure to different drugs, a supervised machine learning algorithm can be trained to recognize and classify cells that have been exposed to an unknown drug. Furthermore, the learning algorithm provides information on the relative contribution of each data parameter to the overall classification. Probabilities and confidence in the accuracy of each classification may also be determined by the algorithm. In this study, the electrophysiological effects of β–adrenergic drugs, propranolol and isoproterenol, on cardiomyocytes derived from …

Challenging The Discourse Of Untreatability For Borderline Personality Disorder: A Call For Comparative Research, Sandra H. Sulzer
Challenging The Discourse Of Untreatability For Borderline Personality Disorder: A Call For Comparative Research, Sandra H. Sulzer
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
A diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) often signals the quintessential “difficult patient” status to clinicians, with at least one scholar arguing the condition itself was created to name and group difficult patients. While patients who are deemed difficult are often dispreferred for care, does this have an impact on their overall status as medicalized patients who have successfully achieved a sick role? This study relies on (n = 22) in-depth interviews with mental health clinicians in the United States from 2012 to evaluate how they describe patients with BPD, how the diagnosis of BPD affects the treatment clinicians are …

The Kinetic Specificity Of Plyometric Training: Verbal Cues Revisited, Talin J. Louder, Megan Bressel, Eadric Bressel
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
Plyometric training is a popular method utilized by strength and conditioning professionals to improve aspects of functional strength. The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of extrinsic verbal cueing on the specificity of jumping movements. Thirteen participants (age: 23.4 ± 1.9 yr, body height: 170.3 ± 15.1 cm, body mass: 70.3 ± 23.8 kg,) performed four types of jumps: a depth jump “as quickly as possible” (DJT), a depth jump “as high as possible” (DJH), a countermovement jump (CMJ), and a squat jump (SJ). Dependent measures, which included measurement of strength and power, were acquired using a …
Evaluation Of Student Progress To Goals: Tracking Positive Behavior Changes Among Students Identified With Special Needs Grades 1 To 3, Julia Ries
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
There has been an increase in the number of children identified and served, in school settings, and in the community at large, under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA.) Many school-based programs focus on mainstreaming students with disabilities. However, few programs exist for children between the ages of 5 and 9 who need positive behavior intervention services because they lack socially appropriate interaction skills.
The research literature revealed that students who lack appropriate social interaction skills are often placed into mainstream general class settings, where results of student improvement in social interaction skills are mixed. There is a gap …
Pre Kindergarten Students Increased Letter Recognition Ability Through The Use Of Educational Apps On Tablets For Classroom Instruction, Corrie C. Giugni
Pre Kindergarten Students Increased Letter Recognition Ability Through The Use Of Educational Apps On Tablets For Classroom Instruction, Corrie C. Giugni
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Preschool students are preparing for kindergarten. The kindergarten curriculum is demanding. Students are expected to enter elementary school knowing many aspects related to language arts. The problem at the preschool level is that children need to master letter recognition and letter sounds in order to prepare them to learn how to read. The literature reveals that using technology before they enter kindergarten can be beneficial in developing students emergent literacy skills (Beschorner & Huchison, 2013).
It is important for teachers to meet the needs of all of their students. Using electronic tablets in the classroom is a tool that can …
Building Depth Of Understanding Of The Concept Of Number Sense And Algebra In Students Grades 7 And 8, Catherine Janes
Building Depth Of Understanding Of The Concept Of Number Sense And Algebra In Students Grades 7 And 8, Catherine Janes
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Mathematics instruction offers both challenges and rewards to students. Teachers tend to focus on transmission of knowledge. Student creativity and problem-solving skills are not typically activated with common teaching practices. When students are engaged in mathematics they are recognizing patterns, making connections on their own, coming up with creative solutions, and discussing mathematical ideas with peers and adults. The purpose of this study was to identify, employ, and evaluate strategies that engage students in these practices and assist them in developing a deep understanding of mathematics concepts such as number sense and algebra.
The review of the literature began with …

Nuestros muertos quieren ser parte de nuestra conversaci6n, no nos permiten olvidar, nos dicen que las comunidades que formamos en vida son parte tambien de las comunidades ausentes. -Cristina Rivera Garza, in Monica Maristain 1
[Our dead want to be part of our conversation, they do not allow us to forget, they tell us that the communities that are no longer present are also part of the communities we create in life.]
The commonplace phrase, "the ghosts of the past," evokes remoteness, something intangible that nevertheless is ever present, a sort of historical sublime. 2 As the Mexican novelist Cristina …

Research in all areas of sciences and humanities has led to the creation of a highly competitive environment which necessitates reporting of ideas, and discoveries at rapid pace. The emergence of new technologies of communication has significantly enhanced the capabilities of individuals to record and transcribe data at high speed. Even though, one can accumulate information in a fraction of time, but quite often the creative skills and ability to write one‘s own original thoughts do not match the required level of output. Writing ideas in one’s own words is not always easy and at times it becomes quite challenging …

Electrolyte imbalances frequently cause seizures, and these seizures may be the sole presenting symptom. Seizures are especially common in patients with sodium disorders, hypocalcemia, and hypomagnesemia. Successful management of patient seizures begins with the establishment of an accurate diagnosis of the underlying electrolyte disturbance, because rapid identification and correction of the disturbance is necessary to control seizures and prevent permanent brain damage. Objectives: To delineate the percentage of people with status epilepticus having calcium and magnesium deficiencies at admission. Methods: The study was carried out from April 2013 to October 2013 at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad, Pakistan. …

On The Local Isometric Embedding In R^3 Of Surfaces With Zero Sets Of Gaussian Curvature Forming Cusp Domains, Tsung-Yin Lin
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We study the problem of isometrically embedding a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold into Euclidean three-space. It is shown that if the Gaussian curvature vanishes to finite order and its zero set consists of two smooth curves tangent at a point, then local sufficiently smooth isometric embeddings exist. | 64 pages

A Sharp Boundary Model For Electrocardiac Simulations, Shuai Xue
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We present a sharp boundary electrocardiac simulation model based on the finite volume embedded boundary method for the solution of voltage dynamics in irregular domains with anisotropy and a high degree of anatomical detail. This method is second order accurate uniformly up to boundaries and is able to resolve small features without the use of fine meshes. This capability is necessary to enable the repeated simulations required for future verification and validation (V&V) and uncertainty quantification (UQ) studies of defibrillation, where fine-scale heterogeneities, such as those formed by small blood vessels play an important role and require resolution. | 85 …
Convergence Of Manifolds And Metric Spaces With Boundary, Raquel Del Carmen Perales Perales Aguilar
Convergence Of Manifolds And Metric Spaces With Boundary, Raquel Del Carmen Perales Perales Aguilar
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We study sequences of oriented Riemannian manifolds with boundary and, more generally, integral current spaces and metric spaces with boundary. We prove theorems demonstrating when the Gromov-Hausdorff [GH] and Sormani-Wenger Intrinsic Flat [SWIF] limits of sequences of such metric spaces agree. Thus in particular the limit spaces are countably $\mathcal{H}^n$ rectifiable spaces. From these theorems we derive compactness theorems for sequences of Riemannian manifolds with boundary where both the GH and SWIF limits agree. For sequences of Riemannian manifolds with boundary we only require nonnegative Ricci curvature, upper bounds on volume, noncollapsing conditions on the interior of the manifold and …
