Natural Degradation Of Earthworks, Trenches, Walls And Moats, Northern Thailand, Spencer H. Wood, Layle R. Wood, Alan D. Ziegler

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

“………..structures of this kind are hidden away securely under the thick overgrowth: thus does nature preserve what man would surely destroy” (from Sumet Jumsai, 1970)

We investigate the geometry, age, and history of several enigmatic northern Thailand earthwork entrenchments that are mostly located on hills and could not have held water to form moats. The earthworks are either oval or rectangular in map view; and they typically encircle 0.3-to-1-km2 areas that do not have potsherd debris indicative of former towns. Most trenches are 3-5 m deep with inner walls 4.5-8 m high. Some encircling earthworks are concentric double trenches …

Lekuak: The Basque Places Of Boise, Idaho, Meggan Laxalt Mackey

History Graduate Projects and Theses

Lekuak ("Places") traces how Basque places in Boise reflect the evolution of each generation’s expression of ethnic identity in response to American societal forces of the times. The first-generation Amerikanuak (late 1800s to 1920s) predominantly expressed their ethnicity as an internally-focused, solely-Basque ethnic group and built places such as boardinghouses and frontons that met communal needs. The Tartekoak, ("in-between" second generation, 1930s to the 1950s), mostly expressed a dual Basque and American ethnic identity. Tartekoak places often revealed the individuation of this generation with single-family residences and Americanized businesses, and the Basque Center with ancestry-based membership. The Egungoak ("today" …

Economic Impacts Of The Kentucky Green Industry [2015], Dewayne L. Ingram, Alan Hodges Dec 2015

Economic Impacts Of The Kentucky Green Industry [2015], Dewayne L. Ingram, Alan Hodges

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

The green industry, comprised of firms engaged in the production and use of landscape and floral crops and related supplies and equipment and the design, construction, and maintenance of landscapes, has a significant impact on Kentucky’s economy. Green-industry enterprise owners, managers, and employees should be aware of their economic impacts, and policy makers and other state leaders need to know the importance of this industry as potential laws, regulations and resource allocations are considered. This publication is intended to provide a brief summary of the 2013 economic impacts of the green industry in Kentucky.

Distinguishing Softwoods From Hardwoods, Terry Conners Dec 2015

Distinguishing Softwoods From Hardwoods, Terry Conners

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Softwood and hardwood trees are made up of different types of cells. With just a little magnification, it’s easy to see that softwood growth rings look different from hardwood growth rings. Additionally, growth rings don’t look the same for all of the trees, and the growth ring appearance is one of the things we will look at to identify wood.

Characteristics Of Kentucky’S Nursery And Greenhouse Industries [2015], Dewayne L. Ingram, Winston Dunwell, Alan Hodges Dec 2015

Characteristics Of Kentucky’S Nursery And Greenhouse Industries [2015], Dewayne L. Ingram, Winston Dunwell, Alan Hodges

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

The nursery and greenhouse industry in Kentucky is diverse and contributes significantly to the local and state economy. This industry represents the largest segment of Kentucky’s sales of horticultural products and is comprised almost completely of farm families. Nursery and greenhouse operations have historically been characterized as separate production systems and crops. However, today primary nurseries may also have greenhouses and/or produce herbaceous perennials and annuals to satisfy their customer base. On the other hand, many primary greenhouse firms that once grew mostly annuals and potted flowering crops have expanded their product line to include herbaceous perennials, often finished in …

Introduction To Wood Structure And Characteristics, Terry Conners Dec 2015

Introduction To Wood Structure And Characteristics, Terry Conners

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Wood is identified using the features and tools that are appropriate to the size of the sample. Large timbers are identified by looking at the color, the appearance of the end and side grain, whether a saw cuts cleanly or leaves lots of splinters behind, whether the wood has straight or curly drying cracks, and so forth. The hardness and density provide valuable information as well. For smaller pieces of wood, it’s more practical to look directly at the wood cells with a 10X hand lens (also called a loupe). Different species have different characteristics and combinations of these features …

Grain Patterns And Growth Rings, Terry Conners Dec 2015

Grain Patterns And Growth Rings, Terry Conners

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

The preceding article, "Identifying Wood–A Primer for Everyone, Part 3: Distinguishing Softwoods from Hardwoods" (FOR-125), described how to distinguish softwoods from hardwoods, and that’s the first step in identifying an unknown piece of wood. At this point, additional terminology is necessary to further distinguish between species, and I'll begin by talking about the different sides of a hypothetical piece of wood. Frequently you need to be able to observe wood cells from a particular perspective, and you will need to know where to look for different features on your sample. It’s also very helpful to develop a kind of “visual …

The First Separation Of Softwood Species, Terry Conners Dec 2015

The First Separation Of Softwood Species, Terry Conners

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Just making the separation between softwoods and hardwoods doesn’t help much in identifying wood species; that would be sort of like identifying children by their hair color. Let’s look at the next level of wood features that you need to be able to recognize.

First Steps In Identifying Wood, Terry Conners Dec 2015

First Steps In Identifying Wood, Terry Conners

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Wood samples need to be identified for all sorts of reasons, and they come in all shapes, sizes and conditions. I’ve received samples that were sound, samples that were waterlogged, samples that were rotted or otherwise degraded, painted samples, furniture samples, even samples containing wood preservatives. Most of the samples I receive have a North American origin, but I also receive pieces from art museums and antique dealers that can originate from just about anywhere. This sometimes means that identifying the sample by a common name alone doesn’t provide enough information.

Motherhood As Contested Ideological Terrain: Essentialist And Queer Discourses Of Motherhood At Play In Female–Female Co-Mothers’ Talk, Elizabeth A. Suter, Leah M. Seurer, Stephanie Webb, Brian Grewe Jr., Jody Koenig Kellas Dec 2015

Motherhood As Contested Ideological Terrain: Essentialist And Queer Discourses Of Motherhood At Play In Female–Female Co-Mothers’ Talk, Elizabeth A. Suter, Leah M. Seurer, Stephanie Webb, Brian Grewe Jr., Jody Koenig Kellas

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Framed by relational dialectics theory (Baxter), this investigation considered the meaning(s) of motherhood in female–female co-motherhood. Analysis identified two competing discourses: (1) discourse of essential motherhood (DEM) and (2) discourse of queer motherhood (DQM). Speakers’ invocation of the DEM reinscribes the mainstream US cultural discourse that children can have only one authentic (i.e., biological) mother, whereas invocation of the DQM denaturalizes the DEM’s presumptions of authentic motherhood as biological, interrupts monomaternalism, destabilizes the patriarch, and troubles the equation of biological with moral motherhood. Whereas interpenetrations of the DEM and DQM were typically sites of adversarial discursive struggle, in a few …

A workshop was held at the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases with a focus on the impact of sleep and circadian disruption on energy balance and diabetes. The workshop identified a number of key principles for research in this area and a number of specific opportunities. Studies in this area would be facilitated by active collaboration between investigators in sleep/circadian research and investigators in metabolism/diabetes. There is a need to translate the elegant findings from basic research into improving the metabolic health of the American public. There is also a need for investigators studying the impact …

Properties Of Pan Fibers Solution Spun Into A Chilled Coagulation Bath At High Solvent Compositions, E. Ashley Morris, Matthew C. Weisenberger, Gregory Wilson Rice

Center for Applied Energy Research Faculty and Staff Publications

In this work, multifilament, continuous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber tow was solution spun mimicking industrial processing at the small pilot scale (0.5 k tow), while carefully altering the composition of the coagulation bath, in order to determine the effect on the resulting fiber shape, density, orientation, and tensile properties at varying points in the spinning process. Novel here are the abnormally high coagulation bath solvent compositions investigated, which surpass those often reported in the literature. In addition, the coagulation bath was maintained at a slightly chilled temperature, contrary to reported methods to produce round fibers. Further, by altering the composition of …

Understanding multi-phase fluid flow and transport processes within aquifers, candidate reservoirs for CO2 sequestration, and petroleum reservoirs requires understanding a diverse set of geologic properties of the aquifer or reservoir, over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. We focus on multiphase flow dynamics with wetting (e.g., water) and non-wetting (e.g., gas or oil) fluids, with one invading another.

The New Road To Serfdom: The Curse Of Bigness And The Failure Of Antitrust, Carl T. Bogus Dec 2015

The New Road To Serfdom: The Curse Of Bigness And The Failure Of Antitrust, Carl T. Bogus

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article argues for a paradigm shift in modern antitrust policy. Rather than being concerned exclusively with consumer welfare, antitrust law should also be concerned with consolidated corporate power. Regulators and courts should consider the social and political, as well as the economic, consequences of corporate mergers. The vision that antitrust must be a key tool for limiting consolidated corporate power has a venerable legacy, extending back to the origins of antitrust law in early seventeenth century England, running throughout American history, and influencing the enactment of U.S. antitrust laws. However, the Chicago School’s view that antitrust law should be …

Spending Medicare’S Dollars Wisely: Taking Aim At Hospitals’ Cultures Of Overtreatment, Jessica Mantel Dec 2015

Spending Medicare’S Dollars Wisely: Taking Aim At Hospitals’ Cultures Of Overtreatment, Jessica Mantel

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

With Medicare’s rising costs threatening the country’s fiscal health, policymakers have focused their attention on a primary cause of Medicare’s high price tag—the overtreatment of patients. Guided by professional norms that demand they do “everything possible” for their patients, physicians frequently order additional diagnostic tests, perform more procedures, utilize costly technologies, and provide more inpatient care. Much of this care, however, does not improve Medicare patients’ health, but only increases Medicare spending. Reducing the overtreatment of patients requires aligning physicians’ interests with the government’s goal of spending Medicare’s dollars wisely. Toward that end, recent Medicare payment reforms establish a range …

An Administrative Stopgap For Migrants From The Northern Triangle, Collin Schueler Dec 2015

An Administrative Stopgap For Migrants From The Northern Triangle, Collin Schueler

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

From 2011–2014, the United States Department of Homeland Security recorded an extraordinary increase in the number of unaccompanied children arriving at the southern border from Central America’s “Northern Triangle”—the area made up of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. In fact, in fiscal year 2014, United States Customs and Border Protection apprehended over 50,000 unaccompanied children from the Northern Triangle. That is thirteen times more than just three years earlier. This Article examines the intersecting humanitarian and legal crises facing these children and offers an administrative solution to the problem. The children are fleeing a genuine humanitarian crisis—a region overrun by …

Adsorption Equilibrium Of Carbon Dioxide On Ammonia-Modified Activated Carbon, M.S. Shafeeyan, W.M.A.W. Daud, A. Shamiri, N. Aghamohammadi Dec 2015

Adsorption Equilibrium Of Carbon Dioxide On Ammonia-Modified Activated Carbon, M.S. Shafeeyan, W.M.A.W. Daud, A. Shamiri, N. Aghamohammadi

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The equilibrium adsorption isotherms of carbon dioxide on a commercial granular activated carbon (GAC) and an ammonia-modified GAC (OXA-GAC) were measured using a static volumetric method. CO2 adsorption measurements were performed at three different temperatures (303, 318, and 333 K), and pressures up to 1 atm. The obtained equilibrium data were fitted to the Freundlich, Sips, and Toth isotherms using a semi-empirical approach to differentiate the contributions of physical and chemical adsorption to the total CO2 uptake. The isotherm parameters were determined independently for each mechanism by non-linear regression. To evaluate the adequacy of the fit of the isotherm models, …

Reinstating The Soul In Engineering Laboratory Work: Direct Observation Assessment Method, A.B. Aishah

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This paper explores a case on the implementation of a new assessment procedure in a second year undergraduate soil mechanics laboratory. This new method emerged as a result of an attempt to constructively align assessment to intended learning outcome when Outcome-based Education is implemented. The new method involves the introduction of direct observation as part of assessment as well the usual assessment via laboratory report. Constructive alignment between assessment and learning outcomes with embedded formative assessment were used as a strategy to ensure active learning to occur. Assessing the learning process of laboratory activities rather than the end product increases …
