Diurnal Variation Of Water Vapor Isotopologues On The Chajnantor Plateau During The Austral Spring, Alec Tunner
Diurnal Variation Of Water Vapor Isotopologues On The Chajnantor Plateau During The Austral Spring, Alec Tunner
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The diurnal variation of water vapor isotopologues over the Chajnantor Plateau during the Austral Spring was investigated using a near continuous record of in situ water vapor isotopologues, numerical modeling, and routine meteorological measurements. On average, there is an approximately 34% increase in the mixing ratio coupled with an 11‰ increase in δ18O, 71‰ increase in δD, and 23‰ decrease in deuterium excess on the Plateau. This significant diurnal variation is a result of the mixing between dry, upper tropospheric air (dry end-member) and a small contribution (9-25%) of a continental (δD < -120‰) source of moisture (wet end-member). While the dry end-member continuously subsides on the Plateau, the continental source is advected onto the Plateau during the day due to a thermally induced, regional, diurnal circulation.

In today’s society, we are seeing incredible improvements in terms of creating smaller technological devices that behave more and more like the personal computers of yesterday. Mobile “Smart” devices, in particular, are becoming incredibly powerful not just in terms of processing power, but in the fact that they are able to provide assistance to users in their everyday lives. Application developers are now able utilize the power and size of these devices, to create and realize ideas that would have been previously viewed as impossible. This project applies the fields of digital signal processing, music, and mobile application development, to …

Examining Patterns In Second Graders’ Use Of Virtual Manipulative Mathematics Apps Through Heatmap Analysis, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, Stephen Isaac Tucker, Arla Westenskow, Jurgen Symanzik
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
This study examined 32 second-grade children’s interactions with six virtual manipulative mathematics apps on the iPad using a novel analysis approach called heatmap analysis. Mathematical topics of the six apps focused on understanding skip counting and place value concepts. Children interacted individually with the apps under the guidance of an interviewer during 30-40 minute clinical interviews. The heatmap analysis revealed patterns in children’s performance on the tasks and suggested individual cases for further analysis. For example, clusters of children showed high or low performance during the skip counting sequence. In the high-performing cluster, one child still struggled to monitor the …

A Study On General Assembly Line Balancing Modeling Methods And Techniques, Bryan Pearce
A Study On General Assembly Line Balancing Modeling Methods And Techniques, Bryan Pearce
All Dissertations
The borders of the assembly line balancing problem, as classically drawn, are as clear as any other operations research topic in production planning, with well-defined sets of assumptions, parameters, and objective functions. In application, however, these borders are frequently transgressed. Many of these deviations are internal to the assembly line balancing problem itself, arising from any of a wide array of physical or technological features in modern assembly lines. Other issues are founded in the tight coupling of assembly line balancing with external production planning and management problems, as assembly lines are at the intersection of multiple related problems in …
The Association Of Body Image And Interpersonal Relationships As It Relates To Happiness, Michelle J. Chen
The Association Of Body Image And Interpersonal Relationships As It Relates To Happiness, Michelle J. Chen
HIM 1990-2015
As one of the most important emotional goals pertaining to humankind, achieving happiness has been the central focus of scientists, philosophers, and the general population alike since the beginning of recorded history. This study strove to examine the association of body image satisfaction and relationship quality as it relates to happiness. Four hundred college-age participants completed the Subjective Happiness Scale, the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (Appearance Scales), and the Network of Relationships Inventory (Relationships Quality Version) for close friendships of the same-sex and opposite-sex. Statistical analysis indicated that while body image satisfaction was significantly correlated with happiness, quality of interpersonal …
Effects Of Real Estate Cycles On Residential Amenity Values For Water Resources, Amy L. Hillard
Effects Of Real Estate Cycles On Residential Amenity Values For Water Resources, Amy L. Hillard
HIM 1990-2015
Little research has been conducted on the effects of housing price cycles on preferences for environmental landscape attributes over time (Cho, Kim, & Roberts, 2011). If the economic value of scarce resources like water resource amenities depends on consumer preferences, then it is useful to address possible effects of cyclical variation in the housing market on these values. This issue is addressed in the primary research question for this thesis: Did the 2007-2009 recession and consequent real estate bust affect marginal willingness to pay for water resource amenities for properties in proximity to the lower St. Johns River (SJR) in …

Race, Calcineurin Inhibitor Exposure, And Renal Function After Solid Organ Transplantation, Lenar Yessayan, A Shafiq, Edward L. Peterson, K Wells, Yong Hu, Keoki L. Williams, David E. Lanfear
Nephrology Articles
BACKGROUND: Calcineurin-inhibitor (CNI)-induced nephrotoxicity frequently complicates transplantation. African-Americans are at a greater risk of renal failure than the general population. We investigated whether race was an effect modifier of the relationship between CNI exposure and kidney function after nonrenal solid organ transplantation.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of 1609 patients who underwent initial nonrenal solid organ transplantation between January 2000 and June 2012. A central repository administrative database was queried electronically for demographics, comorbidities, and serial levels of tacrolimus, cyclosporine, and serum creatinine. Predictors of interest were total drug exposure of tacrolimus and cyclosporine (area under the concentration-time …

Manual Anchoring Biases In Slant Estimation Affect Matches Even For Near Surfaces, D. M. Shaffer, E. Mcmanama, Frank H. Durgin
Psychology Faculty Works
People verbally overestimate hill slant by ~15°–25°, whereas manual estimates (e.g., palm board measures) are thought to be more accurate. The relative accuracy of palm boards has contributed to the widely cited theoretical claim that they tap into an accurate, but unconscious, motor representation of locomotor space. Recently, it was shown that a bias that stems from anchoring the hand at horizontal prior to the estimate can quantitatively account for the difference between manual and verbal estimates of hill slant. The present work extends this observation to manual estimates of near-surface slant, to test whether the bias derives from manual …
Fabrication Of Thermoelectric Devices Using Additive-Subtractive Manufacturing Techniques: Application To Waste-Heat Energy Harvesting, Mahder Tewolde
Fabrication Of Thermoelectric Devices Using Additive-Subtractive Manufacturing Techniques: Application To Waste-Heat Energy Harvesting, Mahder Tewolde
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) are solid-state devices that convert heat directly into electricity. They are well suited for waste-heat energy harvesting applications as opposed to primary energy generation. Commercially available thermoelectric modules are flat, inflexible and have limited sizes available. State-of-art manufacturing of TEG devices relies on assembling prefabricated parts with soldering, epoxy bonding, and mechanical clamping. Furthermore, efforts to incorporate them onto curved surfaces such as exhaust pipes, pump housings, steam lines, mixing containers, reaction chambers, etc. require custom-built heat exchangers. This is costly and labor-intensive, in addition to presenting challenges in terms of space, thermal coupling, added weight and …

Multifunctional Smart Structures For Energy Harvesting, Structure Health Monitoring, And Vibration Control, Wanlu Zhou
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Smart structure, which is defined as “a system or material which has built-in or intrinsic sensors, actuators and control mechanisms is capable of responding adaptively to the environment†, has attracted more and more interest in recent decades, especially in the applications of aerospace, civil, and mechanical infrastructures. Piezoelectric, with its special electromechanical characteristics, is widely used in the smart structure design. Piezoelectric-based multifunctional smart structures for integrated vibration energy harvesting, structure health monitoring, and vibration control are studied in this dissertation. In the aspect of energy harvesting, a novel piezoelectric energy harvester with multi-mode dynamic magnifier is proposed and …
A Study Of Virtualization Overheads, Kavita Agarwal
A Study Of Virtualization Overheads, Kavita Agarwal
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Containers or OS-based virtualization have seen a recent resurgence in deployment. Containers have low memory footprint and start-up time but provide weaker security isolation than Virtual Machines (VMs). Incapability to load kernel modules and support multiple OS, and platform-dependence limits the functionality of containers. On the other hand, VMs or hardware-based virtualization are platform-independent and are more secure, but have higher overheads. A data centre operator chooses among these two virtualization technologies —VMs and containers—when setting up guests on cloud infrastructure. Density and Latency are two critical factors for a data centre operator because they determine the efficiency of cloud …

Language Grounding In Massive Online Data, Jianfu Chen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Truly understanding natural language requires grounding language to perceptions and actions in the physical and social world. This goes beyond studying the textual modality alone. Today's web not only has sheer volume of data, but also increasingly multi-modal data, intertwining text with videos, images, audios, and ontologies that are perceptions or abstractions of people's everyday life. Hence the web provides rich and ever growing resources for studying grounded language. This thesis presents a series of investigations of language woven into various types of online data, ranging from ontology and images to time series. We contribute data distillation approaches and large-scale …
Natural Language Processing Using Word Connection Networks, Yanqing Chen
Natural Language Processing Using Word Connection Networks, Yanqing Chen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Word Connection Networks are graphs recording linguistic connections, including both semantic and syntactic connections, between single words. Specific Word Connection Networks of smaller sizes are frequently used in our daily communications – we search for counterparts of words in another language when doing translations and we group words by their sentiment when express feelings. Word Connection Networks are usually consistent with each other, which makes it an interesting and challenging idea to construct integrated language resources with both inter-language and intra-language connections to handle natural language processing tasks in a multilingual environment. We propose to collect large-scale word-level linguistic resources …

Cache-Adaptive Algorithms, Roozbeh Ebrahimi Soorchaei
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Memory efficiency and locality have substantial impact on the performance of programs, particularly when operating on large data sets. Thus, memory- or I/O-efficient algorithms have received significant attention both in theory and practice. The widespread deployment of multicore machines, however, brings new challenges. Specifically, since the memory is shared across multiple processes, the effective memory-size allocated to each process fluctuates over time. This dissertation studies algorithms in the context of a memory allocation that changes over time, which we call the cache-adaptive setting. The cache-adaptive model applies to operating systems, databases, and other systems where the allocation of memory to …

Young In Class: Implications For Inattentive/Hyperactive Behaviour Of Canadian Boys And Girls, Kelly Chen, Nicole Fortin, Shelley Phipps
Young In Class: Implications For Inattentive/Hyperactive Behaviour Of Canadian Boys And Girls, Kelly Chen, Nicole Fortin, Shelley Phipps
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Using data from the Statistics Canada National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY), this paper investigates the impact of school entry age on inattentive/hyperactive behaviours. We employ both a cross-provinces-time differences-in-differences approach, and a within-province regression discontinuity design. We find that being young in class causes greater inattentive/hyperactive behaviour, exacerbating any inattentive/hyperactive behavior exhibited prior to school entry. These results also also hold in sibling fixed effect models. Though we do not find gender differences in the effects, because boys are more likely to be inattentive/hyperactive at school entry, they are more affected. These effects persist into early adolescence.

The Validation Of An Instrument For Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Professional Development Program On Teaching Online, Jui-Long Hung, Dazhi Yang
Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Attending professional development (PD) on teaching online is becoming popular for teachers in today’s K-12 online education. Due to the unique characteristics of the online instructional environments, surveys become the most feasible approach to evaluate the effectiveness of PD programs. However, there is no validated, open-access instrument available to satisfy the needs. Purpose of this study is to conduct construct validity, content validity, concurrent validity, and reliability tests on an open-access instrument for K–12 PD for online teaching. With the exception of a few items that have minor issues on content and construct validity, results show that the survey is, …
