Investigating Electroweak Physics At The Large Hadron Collider, Pin-Ju Tien Dec 2015

Investigating Electroweak Physics At The Large Hadron Collider, Pin-Ju Tien

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The basic principle of naturalness has driven the majority of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) program, but so far all searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) have come up empty. On the other hand, a few existing measurements of SM processes contain interesting anomalies, for instance in the measurement of the WW cross section. The deviation of WW cross section was seen both at ATLAS and CMS and both at 7 and 8 TeV. The discrepancy also became larger at 8 TeV. Combined results with LHC 7 TeV and 8 TeV implies around a three sigma deviation …

Resurgence And The Large N Expansion, Ricardo Vaz Dec 2015

Resurgence And The Large N Expansion, Ricardo Vaz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this dissertation we focus on recent developments in the study of resurgence and the large N expansion. It is a well known fact that perturbative expansions, such as the large N expansion, are divergent asymptotic series. This is a signal that there are non- perturbative effects of the form exp(-N) that also need to be considered, and our original perturbative series should be upgraded to one including powers of both 1/N and exp(-N), which is called a transseries. The machinery needed to tackle transseries was developed in the 1980s under the formalism of so-called resurgence. Using its tools we …

Stirap On Helium: Excitation To Rydberg States, Deqian Yuan Dec 2015

Stirap On Helium: Excitation To Rydberg States, Deqian Yuan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Research in optically induced transitions between dierent atomic levels has a long history. For transitions between states driven by a coherent optical eld, the theoretical eciency could be ideally high as 100% but there could be many factors preventing this. In the three state helium atom excitation process, i.e. 23S! 33P! nL , the stimulated emission from intermediate state makes it hard to achieve ecient population transfer to the nal state through an intuitive excitation order. One technique to achieve a higher eciency is Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) which is being studied and under research in our lab. Unlike …

Qcd Factorization And Effective Field Theories At The Lhc, Mao Zeng Dec 2015

Qcd Factorization And Effective Field Theories At The Lhc, Mao Zeng

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the main tool for making precise theoretical predictions for proton-proton collisions at the large hadron collider (LHC). A key lesson from QCD is that physics looks different at different energy scales, under renormalization group evolution. The simplest example is the running coupling, but more examples come from QCD factorization of hadron scattering and effective field theories. A hard scattering event in hadron collisions involves two widely separated scales: the hadron mass scale and the hard momentum transfer scale. The parton distribution functions, describing a light-cone view of the internal structure of a proton, are evolved from …

Ideological Extremity Perception: Causes And Consequences, Karyn Ann Amira Dec 2015

Ideological Extremity Perception: Causes And Consequences, Karyn Ann Amira

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines causes and consequences of ideological perception and theorizes that these judgments are fueled by both conscious and subconscious affect, as proposed by the hot cognition model and the motivated reasoning framework. The first empirical chapter, which stands separate from the others, uses fixed effects NES panel data to demonstrate that ideological perceptions of the party in power impact citizen preferences for federal spending. The second empirical chapter uses an experimental survey to demonstrate that conscious and subconscious affect impact ideological perceptions of fictitious candidates while simultaneously testing a previous finding that Democrats are perceived as more ideological …

Racialized Partisan Identity: The Role Of Pan-Ethnic Identity In Partisan Movement Among Asian Americans, Richard Cho Dec 2015

Racialized Partisan Identity: The Role Of Pan-Ethnic Identity In Partisan Movement Among Asian Americans, Richard Cho

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

I conduct empirical and experimental tests to highlight the impact of perceived commonality with racial-minority groups and its effects on subsequent political behavior among Asian Americans. This includes an exploration into how a shared identity interacts with Asian Americans’ racial identity to shape their subsequent political behavior. Using experimental treatments adopted from real-world messages in the news media, I show how exposure to the political derogation of both illegal and legal immigrant groups in the United States activates Asian Americans’ own racial identification and that the extent to which this identity affects political attitudes related to this derogation are largely …

Fractional Time Series Applications In Political Science, Taylor Grant Dec 2015

Fractional Time Series Applications In Political Science, Taylor Grant

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation is focused on the estimation of time series models with the main area of interest being the use of fractional methods in political science. Since the work of Granger (1980), Granger and Joyeux (1980) and Hosking (1981) initially introduced the concept of fractional integration the area of study has continued to grow in economics. In political science however, research into fractional integration has failed to advance beyond an initial flurry of study that began in the late 1990s and early 2000s. This dissertation contains three stand alone chapters that are focused on the use of fractional methods with …

€Œpost-Truth†Politics? Media Causes And Potential Effects Of Perceptions Of Candidate Honesty, Matthew Harris Dec 2015

€Œpost-Truth†Politics? Media Causes And Potential Effects Of Perceptions Of Candidate Honesty, Matthew Harris

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Honesty has long been a trait voters seek in candidates for political office, yet the past few decades of American politics are strewn with examples of blatant dishonesty by political figures, sometimes with seemingly few electoral consequences. This dissertation examines how perceptions of candidate honesty are formed, as well as potential consequences of dishonest behavior for candidates as well as parties. The first empirical chapter uses ANES data to look at how media usage by citizens can shape perceived honesty. The second empirical chapter uses ARFIMA-MLM framework to look at usage while adding content in the form of news media …

Understanding Social Mobility, Economic Environment, And Their Effects On Social Policy Attitudes, Patrick Lown Dec 2015

Understanding Social Mobility, Economic Environment, And Their Effects On Social Policy Attitudes, Patrick Lown

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Economic opportunity has long been a topic of interest among students of society and politics, and has made its way back to the forefront of inquiry with the resurgence of levels of inequality beyond those observed during the Gilded Age in the 1920s. Recent studies conducted by The Pew Charitable Trust Mobility Project, as well as others, have revealed that despite Americans’ beliefs in a land of opportunity, the chances to get ahead in life have dwindled for many. However, there is a dearth of information about what members of the public think about their own economic mobility and the …

Folk Couture: A Fashion Exhibition At The American Folk Art Museum, Alexis Carreno Dec 2015

Folk Couture: A Fashion Exhibition At The American Folk Art Museum, Alexis Carreno

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation describes the conceptual framework and the materialization of the exhibition I guest-curated at the American Folk Art Museum, Folk Couture: Fashion and Folk Art. Based on the tradition of artists using fashion to produce artworks, (for instance, Sylvie Fleury’s installation Poison, which commented upon issues of consumerism); couturiers appropriating images from art to create garments (such as Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian Dress, in which the designer replicated a painting made by the Russian constructivist artist), and collaborations between fashion designers and artists (for example, designer Marc Jacobs’s and artist Yayoi Kusama’s collaboration for Louis Vuitton), thirteen New York …

The Resurrection Of Self: How Deconversion From Religious Belief To Atheism Healed A History Of Rejection, Trauma, And Shame, Amy Phillips Dec 2015

The Resurrection Of Self: How Deconversion From Religious Belief To Atheism Healed A History Of Rejection, Trauma, And Shame, Amy Phillips

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

There are two experiences that atheists have which are not yet well understood: discrimination and deconversion. Through semi-structured interviews, designed to better understand the deconversion process and the relationships of 35 American atheists living in both the Northeast and Southern regions of the United States, a better understanding of these experiences emerged. These individuals had damaging histories, which included abuse, abandonment and/or outsider status. These elements combined with religious teachings yielded a sense of self-as-bad in which respondents experienced feelings of shame, depression, anxiety, and in some cases suicidality. The 25 males, 9 females and 1 transwoman in this study …

Lost And Found: Transgender Elders’ Journey Toward Authenticity. A Constructionist Grounded Theory Study | Lost And Found: Transgender Elders’ Journey Toward Authenticity. A Constructionist Grounded Theory Study, Donna Barbara Riley

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

While theoretical models of transgender identity development exist, theoretical models of post-transition social identity development are limited, and theoretical models of transgender individuals transitioning in later life are absent. As such, the purpose of this study is to explore the experience of transgender individuals coming out later in life, often after decades of hiding. Their experiences give voice to the trans community to define self-fulfillment as a transgender person post-transition. Additionally, this study explores the obstacles transgender elders navigate in middle and later life. Using a semi-structured interview guide with 42 transgender elders 55 years and older, respondents constructed chronological …

Painting Against The Grain Of History: Radical Traditionalism In Twentieth Century German Art, Travis William English Dec 2015

Painting Against The Grain Of History: Radical Traditionalism In Twentieth Century German Art, Travis William English

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Focusing on the years immediately following World War I and concluding with the present, this dissertation examines the connections across a range of artists and periods in German art in terms of what I will call radical traditionalism. This analysis involves the work of George Grosz, Otto Dix, Gerhard Richter, and Neo Rauch, all artists who, despite their differences in styles and contexts, can be grouped together in their commitment to bringing forth a heterogeneous vision of figurative painting that looks beyond the limitations that have tended to frame the discussion of artistic modernism, namely, the opposition between abstraction and …

Removing The Yard Face: The Impact Of The Carceral Habitus On Reentry And Reintegration, Deirdre Deanna Caputo-Levine Dec 2015

Removing The Yard Face: The Impact Of The Carceral Habitus On Reentry And Reintegration, Deirdre Deanna Caputo-Levine

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The dissertation is a study of the ways in which people come to embody the prison and the impact that this embodiment has on reentry and reintegration outcomes. It is based on three years of ethnographic fieldwork conducted in a Career Development class run by an agency that serves formerly incarcerated individuals. The participants in the class were observed as they attempted to consciously alter the carceral habitus. The research methodology is grounded in phenomenology, reflexive sociology and the extended case method. Participant observation, phenomenological interviews and content analysis were used as investigative tools. The study establishes the presence of …

The Global Determinants Of Health: A Cross-National Study Of Child Mortality In Less-Developed Countries, 1985-2005, Eric Shircliff Dec 2015

The Global Determinants Of Health: A Cross-National Study Of Child Mortality In Less-Developed Countries, 1985-2005, Eric Shircliff

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Rates of child mortality vary greatly across the globe. The lowest rates are found in developed countries, with the lowest located in Iceland at 3 deaths per 1,000 live births. The highest rates exist in less-developed countries, the highest of which located in Niger at 305 deaths per 1,000 live births. Since 1990, the global rate of child mortality has been declining. However, for many less-developed countries this progress is either slow or stopped. Furthermore, the total number of child deaths in less-developed countries overwhelms that of developed nations, accounting for approximately 99% of global child mortality. The purpose of …

Formal Verification Of Nonlinear Biological Systems, Md Ariful Islam Dec 2015

Formal Verification Of Nonlinear Biological Systems, Md Ariful Islam

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Abstraction and composition have proved to be particularly useful in extending the reach of formal verification. Abstraction reduces the size of the system under investigation by neglecting details irrelevant to the properties of interest. Compositionality allows us to decompose large-scale system into smaller components and verify each component individually and reason about the verification of entire system from verified components. Together, these two techniques permit us to substitute a component with its equivalent abstraction such that the overall system retains the property of interest. In this thesis, we first show that in the context of the Iyer et al. (IMW) …

Optimal Mass Transport And Its Applications, Zhengyu Su Dec 2015

Optimal Mass Transport And Its Applications, Zhengyu Su

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Optimal Mass Transport theory has deep roots in pure mathematics, combining complex analysis, Riemannian geometry and measure theory. Monge first raised the classical Optimal Mass Transport Problem that concerns determining the optimal way, with minimal transportation cost, to move a pile of soil from one place to another. Kantorovich has proven the existence and uniqueness of the optimal transport plan based on linear program. Monge-Kantorovich optimization has been used in numerous fields from physics, econometrics to computer science including computer vision, medical imaging and statistics. However, it has one fundamental disadvantage that the complexity is $O(k^2)$, which is unacceptable to …

Synthetic Gene Design: Optimization And Analysis, Rukhsana Yeasmin Dec 2015

Synthetic Gene Design: Optimization And Analysis, Rukhsana Yeasmin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With the advance of synthetic biology has come increased interest in designing synthetic genes which optimize protein expression. We propose new algorithms for gene design under several different constraints. Our optimization criteria include finding minimum energy and maximum energy RNA structures for a given gene sequence, optimizing the amount of tRNA auto-correlation in genes and designing maximum and minimum auto-correlated sequences. We also develop methods to analyze and interpret tiled microarray genome expression data. Statistical analysis of the viral genome expression data enables us to discover unknown facts about its life cycle, its impact on the host cell shutoff mechanism. …

Semi-Automated Object-Based Classification Of Coral Reef Habitat Using Discrete Choice Models, Steven Saul, Samuel J. Purkis Dec 2015

Semi-Automated Object-Based Classification Of Coral Reef Habitat Using Discrete Choice Models, Steven Saul, Samuel J. Purkis

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

As for terrestrial remote sensing, pixel-based classifiers have traditionally been used to map coral reef habitats. For pixel-based classifiers, habitat assignment is based on the spectral or textural properties of each individual pixel in the scene. More recently, however, object-based classifications, those based on information from a set of contiguous pixels with similar properties, have found favor with the reef mapping community and are starting to be extensively deployed. Object-based classifiers have an advantage over pixel-based in that they are less compromised by the inevitable inhomogeneity in per-pixel spectral response caused, primarily, by variations in water depth. One aspect of …

Misconceptional Views About Epilepsy Exist Across Social Class System Of Society, Shoaib Rao, Bakhtyar Ali Shah, Nimra Altaf, Fazal M. Arain

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Epilepsy affects over 1% of population worldwide. Studies have shown that although our understanding about epilepsy has come a long way, misconceptions about its etiology and treatment exist in rural slums. However, no study has been conducted to see whether such misconceptions exist in middle and upper socio-economic class. This study aims to explore the existence of misconceptions and social stigma in the middle and upper socio-economic class. Materials and Methods: We conducted a survey-based study about epilepsy on 227 participants, belonging to middle and upper socio-economic class. Results: The symptoms of generalized tonic-clonic seizures were correctly described by participants. …

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

The objective of our study was to determine the distribution of different electrophysiological variants of GBS and its relationship with albuminocytological dissociation (ACD). The rationale of the study was to determine whether presence or absence of albuminocytological dissociation has any association with NCS findings and whether can be relied upon as an indirect predictor of axonal variant which warrants poor patient out comes versus demyelinating. Materials and Methods: A consecutive series of 76 patients who presented at PIMS over a 12 month period with GBS were included. Nerve Conduction studies (NCS) and Electromyographic (EMG) findings with CSF characterization for albuminocytological …

The Effects Of Ketorolac And Its Enantiomers On Breast Cancer Proliferation And Metastasis, Amanda Sheree Peretti Dec 2015

The Effects Of Ketorolac And Its Enantiomers On Breast Cancer Proliferation And Metastasis, Amanda Sheree Peretti

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in women. Advanced breast cancer can metastasize to the lungs, liver, bones and brain becoming fatal conditions for many patients. There is a dire need for metastasis preventing medications, however the process required for a medication to become FDA approved for clinical use is long and arduous. Studies have found promising benefits for breast cancer patients given ToradolTM, or racemic ketorolac, as an NSAID during resection surgery. However, long-term use of racemic ketorolac is not recommended. Currently FDA-approved for use in the racemic form, ketorolac has the potential to …

To Whom It May Concern: Support-Seeking Within Letters Of Stigmatized College Students In The Southeast U.S., Anna E. Nolte

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Individuals with stigmatized identities have been shown to have more negative health outcomes and shorter life expectancy than individuals who don’t carry a stigmatized label. One factor that acts as a buffer to protect stigmatized individuals against negative outcomes is support. However, how an individual seeks support can have an impact on whether they receive it. This study attempted to discover if the anticipation of either acceptance or rejection affected the type of support-seeking present in letters written by college students with either concealable or visible stigmatized identities. Results indicated stigmatized individuals displayed significantly more indirect support seeking in their …
