Human Environments Analysis Lab (HEAL)
Background: Physical activity during childhood is associated with a multitude of physical, behavioural, and psychological health benefits. Identification of effective population level strategies for increasing children’s physical activity levels is critical for improving the overall health of Canadians. The overall objective of this study is to assess how a naturally-occurring, community-level intervention which offers Grade 5 children in London, Canada a free access pass to physical activity opportunities (facilities and programs) for an entire school year can lead to increased physical activity among recipients.
Methods/Design: This study adopts a longitudinal cohort study design to assess the effectiveness of improving children’s …

Advances in sensor technologies and the proliferation of smart meters have resulted in an explosion of energy-related data sets. These Big Data have created opportunities for development of new energy services and a promise of better energy management and conservation. Sensor-based energy forecasting has been researched in the context of office buildings, schools, and residential buildings. This paper investigates sensor-based forecasting in the context of event-organizing venues, which present an especially difficult scenario due to large variations in consumption caused by the hosted events. Moreover, the significance of the data set size, specifically the impact of temporal granularity, on energy …

Management's Perspective On Critical Success Factors Affecting Mobile Learning In Higher Education Institutions - An Empirical Study, Muasaad Alrasheedi, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Arif Raza
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Mobile learning (m-Learning) is considered to be one of the fastest growing learning platforms. The immense interest in m-Learning is attributed to the incredible rate of growth of mobile technology and its proliferation into every aspect of modern life. Despite this, m-Learning has not experienced a similar adoption rate in the education sector, chiefly higher education. Researchers have attempted to explain this anomaly by conducting several studies in the area. However, mostly the research in m-Learning is examined from the perspective of the students and educators. In this research, it is contended that there is a third important stakeholder group …
Linking Energetics And Overwintering In Temperate Insects., Brent J Sinclair
Linking Energetics And Overwintering In Temperate Insects., Brent J Sinclair
Biology Publications
Overwintering insects cannot feed, and energy they take into winter must therefore fuel energy demands during autumn, overwintering, warm periods prior to resumption of development in spring, and subsequent activity. Insects primarily consume lipids during winter, but may also use carbohydrate and proteins as fuel. Because they are ectotherms, the metabolic rate of insects is temperature-dependent, and the curvilinear nature of the metabolic rate-temperature relationship means that warm temperatures are disproportionately important to overwinter energy use. This energy use may be reduced physiologically, by reducing the slope or elevation of the metabolic rate-temperature relationship, or because of threshold changes, such …
The Significance Of Circulating Tumor Cells In Prostate Cancer Patients Undergoing Adjuvant Or Salvage Radiation Therapy, L. E. Lowes, M. Lock, G. Rodrigues, D. D'Souza, G. Bauman, B. Ahmad, V. Venkatesan, A. L. Allan, T. Sexton
The Significance Of Circulating Tumor Cells In Prostate Cancer Patients Undergoing Adjuvant Or Salvage Radiation Therapy, L. E. Lowes, M. Lock, G. Rodrigues, D. D'Souza, G. Bauman, B. Ahmad, V. Venkatesan, A. L. Allan, T. Sexton
Medical Biophysics Publications
Background:Following radical prostatectomy, success of adjuvant and salvage radiation therapy (RT) is dependent on the absence of micrometastatic disease. However, reliable prognostic/predictive factors for determining this are lacking. Therefore, novel biomarkers are needed to assist with clinical decision-making in this setting. Enumeration of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) using the regulatory-approved CellSearch System (CSS) is prognostic in metastatic prostate cancer. We hypothesize that CTCs may also be prognostic in the post-prostatectomy setting. Methods:Patient blood samples (n=55) were processed on the CSS to enumerate CTCs at 0, 6, 12 and 24 months after completion of RT. CTC values were correlated with predictive/prognostic …

© 2015, The Author(s). Summary: The WHO fracture risk assessment (FRAX) and Canadian Association of Radiologists and Osteoporosis Canada (CAROC) tools can both be used to determine an individual’s 10-year risk of osteoporotic fracture. However, these tools differ in their risk calculation. For participants fracture, FRAX provides a lower fracture risk estimate than CAROC resulting in fewer decisions to initiate therapy.Purpose: The purpose of the current report is to compare fracture risk prediction rates using the CAROC and the FRAX® tools. Methods: Individuals ≥50 years with a distal radius fracture resulting from a fall from standing height or less were recruited …

© 2015 Elsevier B.V.. The technique of microneurography and the assessment of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) are used in laboratories throughout the world. The variables used to describe MSNA, and the criteria by which these variables are quantified from the integrated neurogram, vary among studies and laboratories and, therefore, can become confusing to those starting to learn the technique. Therefore, the purpose of this educational review is to discuss guidelines and standards for the assessment of sympathetic nervous activity through the collection and analysis of MSNA. This review will reiterate common practices in the collection of MSNA, but will …

Saccadic suppression-the reduction of visual sensitivity during rapid eye movements-has previously been proposed to reflect a specific suppression of the magnocellular visual system, with the initial neural site of that suppression at or prior to afferent visual information reaching striate cortex. Dysfunction in the magnocellular visual pathway has also been associated with perceptual and physiological anomalies in individuals with autism spectrum disorder or high autistic tendency, leading us to question whether saccadic suppression is altered in the broader autism phenotype. Here we show that individuals with high autistic tendency show greater saccadic suppression of low versus high spatial frequency gratings …

A Thalamocortical Mechanism For The Absence Of Overt Motor Behavior In Covertly Aware Patients, Davinia Fernández-Espejo, Stephanie Rossit, Adrian M. Owen
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
IMPORTANCE: It is well accepted that a significant number of patients in a vegetative state are covertly aware and capable of following commands by modulating their neural responses in motor imagery tasks despite remaining nonresponsive behaviorally. To date, there have been few attempts to explain this dissociation between preserved covert motor behavior and absent overt motor behavior. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the differential neural substrates of overt and covert motor behavior and assess the structural integrity of the underlying networks in behaviorally nonresponsive patients. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A case-control study was conducted at an academic center between February 7, 2012, …

Phenotypic, Genetic, And Environmental Correlations Between Reaction Times And Intelligence In Young Twin Children, Julie Aitken Schermer, Philip A. Vernon
Management and Organizational Studies Publications
Phenotypic, genetic, and environmental correlations between various reaction time measures and intelligence were examined in a sample of six-year-old twin children (N = 530 individuals). Univariate genetic analyses conducted on the same-sex pairs (101 monozygotic (MZ) pairs and 132 same-sex dizygotic (DZ) pairs) demonstrated that the intelligence measure and four of the seven reaction time measures had a genetic component (ranging from 44% to 76%). At the phenotypic level, half of the reaction time measures had significant negative correlations with the intelligence measure. Bivariate genetic analyses revealed that only two of the observed phenotypic correlations could be explained by common …

Copyright In Photographs In Canada Since 2012, Margaret Ann Wilkinson, Carolyn Soltau, Tierney Gb Deluzio
Law Publications
Photographs perform a unique function because they capture moments in time and that capture is contemporaneous with the subject of the photo: “[a] writer doesn’t necessarily have to be there to produce a story. A photographer, on the other hand, must be at the event when the event happens.”
In 2012, the Copyright Modernization Act changed the Copyright Act in terms of application to photographs. This column will first discuss how copyright now applies to photographs in Canada (who owns copyright and how long it lasts) and then describe the new users’ right now available in respect of commissioned photographs.

Market Volatility And Ipo Filing Activity, Walid Y. Busaba, Daisy Yun Li, Guorong Yang
Business Publications
The IPO filing volume is positively related to changes in market volatility, especially when market returns are at ‘normal’ levels. This is consistent with the view that filing with the SEC gives would be issuers an ‘option’ on market valuations. Creating this option is attractive not only when market valuations rise but also when volatility increases, and the effect of volatility is more pronounced when market returns are neither high nor low. We therefore identify a distinct type of ‘window of opportunity’ for firms attempting to go public, characterized not particularly by strong stock valuations but by increased volatility in …

Over the past twenty-five years aesthetic practice, theory and Arts policy in Europe and North America has been subject to three different yet interrelated and international “turns”: creative, social and ethical this has been exemplified by Arts funding policy in Ireland. Combined, these three turns produce a tone of cultural production that is pitched toward a more measurable and overtly instrumental direction. This paper explores the trends regarding the critical terms of instrumentality and autonomy and their relevance to arguments relating to criteria employed in current Irish Arts funding policy. We argue that that existing Arts funding criteria relegates the …

The Importance Of Reproduction In Evidence Based Policing: A Comment, Laura Huey
Sociology Publications
In the following comment, the author examines the importance of reproduction in evidence based policing. Moreover, she argues that failure to reproduce studies – including through the use of varied methodologies – is antithetical to the development of a solid evidence base upon which to ground effective and efficient community safety practices.
