Silicon Nitride Interfacial Layer Effect On Gallium Nitride Nanorod Growth, Filiz Keles Dec 2015

Silicon Nitride Interfacial Layer Effect On Gallium Nitride Nanorod Growth, Filiz Keles

Theses and Dissertations

Gallium nitride (GaN) nanorods have been grown on Silicon substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). An amorphous and inhomogeneous interfacial silicon nitride (SixNy) layer is unintentionally formed at the initial stage of the GaN growth due to the high affinity between Si and N. The GaN cluster formation on uncontrolled SixNy layer occurs not only tilted but also defect-included such as stacking faults and threading dislocations. These defects mostly would be kept and carried throughout the growth. In this work, we studied the effect of crystal properties of SixNy layer on GaN nanorod quality by varying the nitridation parameters …

Influences Of African American English On Cognitive Processing And Reading Comprehension For African American Adolescent Readers, Alma Renee Dawson Dec 2015

Influences Of African American English On Cognitive Processing And Reading Comprehension For African American Adolescent Readers, Alma Renee Dawson

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a virtual wave of studies investigating influences of African American English on academic achievement. Many of these studies have taken a sociolinguistic stance citing language stratification and low perception of the language as causes for the success and failures of these students. Others have suggested that the language used in family and community settings are not congruent with the academic language in school. In this study, I investigated the influences of African American English on reading achievement from a psycholinguistic perspective. This study analyzed the oral language, linguistics, and the cognitive processing behaviors of African American students …

Reactive Oxygen Species Homeostasis And Proline Catabolism, Lu Zhang Dec 2015

Reactive Oxygen Species Homeostasis And Proline Catabolism, Lu Zhang

Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The role of proline metabolism in regulating cellular redox status was first proposed three decades ago. Proline catabolism was then later found to induce programmed cell death and cell apoptosis by regulating ROS signaling. Proline oxidation was also found to promote cell survival under oxidative stress. Proline catabolism-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) were suggested to be involved in both cases by serving as a regulatory signal. In this work, the sources of proline oxidation-induced ROS production were explored in both bacteria and animal cells. Proline oxidation-induced ROS was found to be shared by bacteria (Escherichia coli) and animals …

Uses Of Diaryliodonium Salts And Methods For Their Synthesis, Jordan M. Veness Dec 2015

Uses Of Diaryliodonium Salts And Methods For Their Synthesis, Jordan M. Veness

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Diaryliodonium salts have been studied continuously since the first report of their synthesis in 1894. Diaryliodonium salts are I(III) derivatives that are air- and moisturestable. The reactivity of these compounds resembles the organometallic chemistry of heavy transition metal ions such as Pb(IV), Hg(II), Th(III), and Pd(II). A significant advantage of diaryliodonium salts is that they can carry undergo many of the aryl functionalization reactions of heavy metal organometallic complexes, yet they have little to no toxicity and they are relatively inexpensive to prepare. The DiMagno laboratory uses diaryliodonium salts as precursors in the final synthetic step of radiopharmaceuticals; given that …

Evaluation Of Genetic Gain For Dynamic Leaf Traits In Maize Using Field Spectroscopy, Jonathan Luetchens Dec 2015

Evaluation Of Genetic Gain For Dynamic Leaf Traits In Maize Using Field Spectroscopy, Jonathan Luetchens

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Rapid introduction of cheap and precise genotyping technology has created a void between genotypes and phenotypes in maize breeding. While detailed genetic information is easily accessible, the data are lacking robust phenotypes to be used in mapping studies like genome-wide association. As a result, high-throughput phenotyping tools are necessary to rigorously characterize specific traits. In this study, agronomic traits and an active spectrometer system were used to monitor 36 era hybrids – popular commercial maize hybrids grown from 1936 to 2012 – to discover how various traits have changed over time. In conjunction with increased grain yield of 76 kg/ha …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Background: There is limited information about health care utilisation at the end of life for people in Australia. We describe acute hospital-based services utilisation during the last year of life for all adults (aged 18+ years) who died in a 12-month period in Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales (NSW). Methods: Linked administrative health data were analysed for all adults who died in NSW in 2007 (the most recent year for which cause of death information was available for linkage for this study). The data comprised linked death records (2007), hospital admissions and emergency department (ED) presentations (2006–2007) and …

The vast majority of microbial life remains uncatalogued due to the inability to cultivate these organisms in the laboratory. This “microbial dark matter” represents a substantial portion of the tree of life and of the populations that contribute to chemical cycling in many ecosystems. In this work, we leveraged an existing single-cell genomic data set representing the candidate bacterial phylum “Calescamantes” (EM19) to calibrate machine learning algorithms and define metagenomic bins directly from pyrosequencing reads derived from Great Boiling Spring in the U.S. Great Basin. Compared to other assembly-based methods, taxonomic binning with a read-based machine learning approach yielded final …

Objective

To examine variations in the quality and cost of care provided to patients with diabetes mellitus by Community Health Centers (CHCs) compared to other primary care settings.

Research Design and Methods

We used data from the 2005–2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (N = 2,108). We used two dependent variables: quality of care and ambulatory care expenditures. Our primary independent variable was whether the respondent received care in a Community Health Centers (CHCs) or not. We estimated logistic regression models to determine the probability of quality of care, and used generalized linear models with log link and gamma distribution to …
