Leading Economic Indicator Reports

Respondents to the November Survey of Nebraska Business had a positive outlook for both employment and sales over the next six months. To be specific, 31 percent of respondents to the November 2015 survey expect to increase sales over the next 6 months while 20 percent expect sales to decrease. At the same time, 20 percent of respondents expect to grow employment compared to 4 percent who expect to reduce it. Businesses in the Southeast Nebraska region, which includes Lincoln, are most optimistic about the outlook for sales and employment. This paper reviews recent research relating to the application of bioinformatics approaches to determining HIV-1 protease specificity, outlines outstanding issues, and presents a new approach to addressing these issues. Leading machine learning theory for the problem currently suggests that the direct encoding of the physicochemical properties of the amino acid substrates is not required for optimal performance. A number of amino acid encoding approaches which incorporate potentially relevant physicochemical properties of the substrate are identified, and are evaluated using a nonlinear task decomposition based neuroevolution algorithm. Smoking is the single most important risk factor in the development of postoperative complications. Daily smoking increases the risk of postoperative complications by a factor of two to four. Smoking cessation preoperatively is beneficial in increasing rates of cessation and therefore reducing the incidence of complications postoperatively. As a result, smoking cessation should be recognized as a core element of care for the preoperative management of the surgical patient. Although the benefits of smoking cessation are well established, as is substantial evidence demonstrating that brief interventions are effective in increasing cessation rates among users, clinicians fail to consistently address the …

The Amazon In Brazilian Speculative Fiction: Utopia And Trauma, M. Elizabeth Ginway

There are two key moments when the Amazon is used as the setting for Brazilian science fiction, both during periods of dictatorship in the twentieth century. The first takes place during the authoritarian government of Getúlio Vargas (1930-1945), the second after the decades-long push for modernization and technological change imposed by the military government from 1964 to 1985. My study shows that, for writers of the first half of the twentieth century, the Amazon is a place of adventure, a setting for stories whose imaginative events ignore the region’s anthropology, history and indigenous cultures. A través del análisis de la novela Synco de Jorge Baradit y el cuento "Exerion" de Pablo Castro, se propone el uso de la literatura de ciencia ficción como vehículo para la curación de traumas producidos por la dictadura chilena de Augusto Pinochet. Los autores creen que a través del extrañamiento y la heterotopía, la ciencia ficción puede ser útil y pertinente a lo que se ha venido a llamar como literatura del trauma.
