First Occurrence Of Lithostrotion (Diphyphyllum) From The Mississippian Redwall Limestone In The Beaver Dam Mountains, Washington County, Utah, Devin M. Mclemore, Jennifer E. Hargrave

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

The Paleozoic stratigraphy of the Beaver Dam Mountains of southwestern Utah correlates well with the better known deposits of the Grand Canyon, Arizona. However, a detailed list of the fossil fauna from the Beaver Dam Mountains is lacking. Here we describe a rugose coral from the Mississippian Redwall Limestone from Washington Country, Utah. The rugose coral is highly recrystallized, but identified as Lithostrotion (Diphyphyllum) based on morphology and geographic extent. An analysis was conducted to determine conodont zonation, but proved inconclusive. This is the first documented case of Lithostrotion (Diphyphyllum) from the Beaver Dam Mountains.

Pennsylvanian Stratigraphy Of Douglas County, Kansas: Glacioeustatically Modulated Cyclic Deposition On A Remarkably Smooth Shelf, Anthony W. Walton Dec 2015

Pennsylvanian Stratigraphy Of Douglas County, Kansas: Glacioeustatically Modulated Cyclic Deposition On A Remarkably Smooth Shelf, Anthony W. Walton

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

The Middle and Late Pennsylvanian succession of Kansas consists of two types of cyclothems, lithologic successions that consist of several members that repeat in a particular order. Cyclothems are a few meters to a few tens of meters thick. One type of cyclothem, the Kansas cyclothem, or here the limestone-rich cyclothem, consists of interbeds of limestone and shale, where the amounts of limestone are approximately equal to the amount of shale or dominate the succession. This trip will study one such cyclothem in the Oread Limestone at Stop 3 and possibly another cyclothem at the optional Stop 4. Siliciclastic cyclothems …

How Do Changes To The Railroad Causeway In Utah’S Great Salt Lake Affect Water And Salt Flow?, James S. White, Sarah E. Null, David G. Tarboton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Managing terminal lake elevation and salinity are emerging problems worldwide. We contribute to terminal lake management research by quantitatively assessing water and salt flow for Utah’s Great Salt Lake. In 1959, Union Pacific Railroad constructed a rock-filled causeway across the Great Salt Lake, separating the lake into a north and south arm. Flow between the two arms was limited to two 4.6 meter wide rectangular culverts installed during construction, an 88 meter opening (referred to locally as a breach) installed in 1984, and the semi porous material of the causeway. A salinity gradient developed between the two arms of the …

It’S All Fun And Games Until . . . Exploring Immersion Into Sexually Objectifying And Violent Video Games, Jessica M. Lacroix Dec 2015

It’S All Fun And Games Until . . . Exploring Immersion Into Sexually Objectifying And Violent Video Games, Jessica M. Lacroix

Doctoral Dissertations

Given the evidence linking violent video games with aggression, the proliferation of sexualized female video game characters, and the availability of commercial video games containing violence against women, there is a need to examine the effects of playing violent video games against sexualized female opponents. A total of 710 male undergraduates participated in five studies using lab-developed first-person-shooter games (Studies 1 and 2) and commercially available third-person-fighting games (Studies 3, 4, and 5). Psychological immersion was explored as a moderator in all studies, and sexual arousal was explored in Studies 4 and 5. Shooting sexualized female opponents, but not male …

The Gap Between Simulated And Measured Energy Performance: A Case Study Across Six Identical New-Build Flats In The Uk, Rv Jones, A Fuertes, P De Wilde Dec 2015

The Gap Between Simulated And Measured Energy Performance: A Case Study Across Six Identical New-Build Flats In The Uk, Rv Jones, A Fuertes, P De Wilde

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Monitoring of completed buildings often identifies significant gaps between the predicted and actual energy use of buildings. This is referred to as the ‘energy performance gap’. To date, most research on the energy performance gap has focussed on non-domestic buildings; this paper presents a case study from the UK domestic sector. Monitoring equipment was installed in six identical flats located in a new-build apartment building. The actual energy used during the first year of occupation is compared with the design stage normative Standard Assessment Procedure calculations as well as seven transient DesignBuilder models produced by a cohort of seven MSc …

Pearl Harbor, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This piece on Pearl Harbor and Baseball was the fifteenth of this series of essays on Sport and Society. It dates from December of 1991 the 50th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and was written as a radio commentary for WUCF-FM an NPR affiliate in Orlando. It aired on December 6, 1991.This seemed like a good time to retrieve it from an HD floppy disc and air it out one more time.

Analysis Of Factors Influencing The Modelling Of Occupant Window Opening Behaviour In An Office Building In Beijing, China, S Wei, C Xu, S Pan, J Su, Et Al

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This paper introduces a longitudinal study monitoring occupants’ window opening behaviour in a mixed-mode office building in Beijing, China, when natural ventilation is specifically used for controlling the building’s indoor thermal environment. Based on the field measured data, the influence of factors, including outdoor air temperature, outdoor PM2.5, indoor air temperature, time of day, occupancy and previous window state, on the observed state of windows is analysed. All of them are influential on occupants’ window opening behaviour in the case study building, and so they can be used to model occupants’ window opening behaviour in buildings in China to achieve …

Optical Approach To Resin Formulation For 3d Printed Microfluidics, Hua Gong, Michael Beauchamp, Steven Perry, Adam T. Woolley, Gregory P. Nordin Dec 2015

Optical Approach To Resin Formulation For 3d Printed Microfluidics, Hua Gong, Michael Beauchamp, Steven Perry, Adam T. Woolley, Gregory P. Nordin

Faculty Publications

Microfluidics imposes different requirements on 3D printing compared to many applications because the critical features for microfluidics consist of internal microvoids. Resins for general 3D printing applications, however, are not necessarily formulated to meet the requirements of microfluidics and minimize the size of fabricated voids. In this paper we use an optical approach to guide custom formulation of resins to minimize the cross sectional size of fabricated flow channels as exemplars of such voids. We focus on stereolithgraphy (SL) 3D printing with Digital Light Processing (DLP) based on a micromirror array and use a commercially available 3D printer. We develop …

Seismic Moment Tensor Catalog For Minto Flats Fault Zone (2000-2014), Vipul Silwal

Faculty

We present moment tensor solutions for 15 earthquakes in the Minto Flats fault zone. Moment tensor solutions were generated using body waves and surface waves. The best solution was obtained through a grid-search in the double-couple moment tensor space using the "cut-and-paste" (CAP) approach of Zhu and Helmberger (1996). The files here are part of the PhD thesis work by Vipul Silwal. The materials were included as part of the supplement to Tape et al. (2015, BSSA).

The Relationship Of Grade Span In 9th Grade To Math Achievement In High School, John West, Mary Lou Miller, Jim Myers, Timothy Norton Dec 2015

The Relationship Of Grade Span In 9th Grade To Math Achievement In High School, John West, Mary Lou Miller, Jim Myers, Timothy Norton

Administrative Issues Journal

Purpose, Scope, and Method of Study: The purpose of this study was to determine if a correlation exists between grade span for ninth grade and gains in math achievement test scores in 10th grade and 12th grade. A quantitative, longitudinal, correlational research design was employed to investigate the research questions. The population was high school students in the United States from public and private schools who were in the ninth grade for the first time during the 1989-1990 school year. The data collection instrument was the National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88). Further sampling and data analysis was conducted …
