No Reef Is An Island: Integrating Coral Reef Connectivity Data Into The Design Of Regional-Scale Marine Protected Area Networks, Steven R. Schill, George T. Raber, Jason J. Roberts, Eric A. Treml, Jorge Brenner, Patrick N. Halpin

Faculty Publications

We integrated coral reef connectivity data for the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico into a conservation decision-making framework for designing a regional scale marine protected area (MPA) network that provides insight into ecological and political contexts. We used an ocean circulation model and regional coral reef data to simulate eight spawning events from 2008–2011, applying a maximum 30-day pelagic larval duration and 20% mortality rate. Coral larval dispersal patterns were analyzed between coral reefs across jurisdictional marine zones to identify spatial relationships between larval sources and destinations within countries and territories across the region. We applied our results in Marxan, …

Qualitative And Semi-Quantitative Evaluation Of Myocardium Perfusion With 3 T Stress Cardiac Mri, Ricardo Cury

All Publications

Background
3 T MRI has been adopted by some centers as the primary choice for assessment of myocardial perfusion over conventional 1.5 T MRI. However, there is no data published on the potential additional value of incorporating semi-quantitative data from 3 T MRI. This study sought to determine the performance of qualitative 3 T stress magnetic resonance myocardial perfusion imaging (3 T-MRMPI) and the potential incremental benefit of using a semi-quantitative perfusion technique in patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD).
Methods
Fifty eight patients (41 men; mean age: 59 years) referred for elective diagnostic angiography underwent stress 3 T …

Assessing The Accuracy Of Some Popular Dft Methods For Computing Harmonic Vibrational Frequencies Of Water Clusters, J. Coleman Howard, Jordan D. Enyard, Gregory S. Tschumper Dec 2015

Assessing The Accuracy Of Some Popular Dft Methods For Computing Harmonic Vibrational Frequencies Of Water Clusters, J. Coleman Howard, Jordan D. Enyard, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A wide range of density functional theory (DFT) methods (37 altogether), including pure, hybrid, range-separated hybrid, double-hybrid, and dispersion-corrected functionals, have been employed to compute the harmonic vibrational frequencies of eight small water clusters ranging in size from the dimer to four different isomers of the hexamer. These computed harmonic frequencies have been carefully compared to recently published benchmark values that are expected to be very close to the CCSD(T) complete basis set limit. Of the DFT methods examined here, ωB97 and ωB97X are the most consistently accurate, deviating from the reference values by less than 20 cm-1 on …

Consistency And Inconsistency In Celebrity Endorsements, Vanessa Veras Victoria Dec 2015

Consistency And Inconsistency In Celebrity Endorsements, Vanessa Veras Victoria

Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate consumer attitudes towards brands when exposed to celebrity endorsements in cases where the personality of the celebrity does not match the personality of the brand (inconsistent). Theories used in this research included: Cognitive Dissonance Theory, how consumers are expected to react when receiving information that presents inconsistency; and Schema Theory, how information is stored in the form of schemas. A measure consisting of attractiveness, credibility, purchase intention and likeability was created based on studies by Spear and Singh (2004) and Halonen-Knight and Hurmerinta (2010) in order to evaluate consumer attitudes. A survey …

Systematic Literature Review Of The Use Of Rich Media In Stem And Related Education, Tony A. Lowe Dec 2015

Systematic Literature Review Of The Use Of Rich Media In Stem And Related Education, Tony A. Lowe

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

The use of video in pedagogy is well established in the modern classroom with researched understanding of its benefits. Prior literature reviews provide a foundation for the impacts within a wide scope of environments and subjects. These reviews primarily have looked at students and faculty attitudes, learning outcomes, and the impact on attendance. The impact has been spread over general subject matter with little focus on the often challenging topics of STEM education. Many topics in STEM education are highly procedural, such as mathematical proofs or writing code or conducting experiments. Understanding the costs and benefits of using video to …

Detection Of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol Query Injection Attacks In Web Applications, Pranahita Bulusu Dec 2015

Detection Of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol Query Injection Attacks In Web Applications, Pranahita Bulusu

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses

The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) is a common protocol used in organizations for Directory Service. LDAP is popular because of its features such as representation of data objects in hierarchical form, being open source and relying on TCP/IP, which is necessary for Internet access. However, with LDAP being used in a large number of web applications, different types of LDAP injection attacks are becoming common. The idea behind LDAP injection attacks is to take advantage of an application not validating inputs before being used as part of LDAP queries. An attacker can provide inputs that may result in alteration …

Applying A Socio-Ecological Framework To Thematic Analysis Using A Statewide Assessment Of Disproportionate Minority Contact In The United States, Dawn X. Henderson, Tiffany Baffour

The Qualitative Report

Disproportionate minority contact (DMC) in the United States represents a critical social challenge to promoting the ideals and values of social justice. The ecological nature of DMC, a phenomenon emerging from the intersection of micro- and macro-level factors, necessitates the application of systems theories in understanding the issue and designing solutions to address it. This article illustrates the application of socio-ecological systems theory in thematic analysis, drawing associations across multiple systems between contributing factors to DMC in the juvenile justice system in North Carolina, USA. Analysis examined data from 6 focus groups comprised of 55 statewide stakeholders involved in the …

Holding Death At Bay Vs. Prolonging Life: Indexing Fatalism And Optimism In The Ideology Of Health, Genetics, And Family History In The U. S. And South Korean Media, Soo Jung Hong, Susan Strauss Dec 2015

Holding Death At Bay Vs. Prolonging Life: Indexing Fatalism And Optimism In The Ideology Of Health, Genetics, And Family History In The U. S. And South Korean Media, Soo Jung Hong, Susan Strauss

The Qualitative Report

Media discourse creates and shapes views of personhood, of possibilities, of wellness, and at the same time, these views and beliefs, in their turn, shape media discourse. Broadcasts of health-related edutainment programs and advertisements are rich sources for the discovery of stances concerning health and illness. We examine media discourse in the United States and South Korea, and uncover consistent indexical patterns pointing to overall ideologies of fatalism in the U.S. and optimism in South Korea. Specifically, from an indexicality-based perspective, we identify the patterned ways in which the ideologies of fatalism and optimism are indexed with regard to agency …

Simplest Relationship Between Local Field Potential And Intracellular Signals In Layered Neural Tissue, Av Chizhov, A Sanchez-Aguilera, S Rodrigues, Lm De La Prida Dec 2015

Simplest Relationship Between Local Field Potential And Intracellular Signals In Layered Neural Tissue, Av Chizhov, A Sanchez-Aguilera, S Rodrigues, Lm De La Prida

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The relationship between the extracellularly measured electric field potential resulting from synaptic activity in an ensemble of neurons and intracellular signals in these neurons is an important but still open question. Based on a model neuron with a cylindrical dendrite and lumped soma, we derive a formula that substantiates a proportionality between the local field potential and the total somatic transmembrane current that emerges from the difference between the somatic and dendritic membrane potentials. The formula is tested by intra- and extracellular recordings of evoked synaptic responses in hippocampal slices. Additionally, the contribution of different membrane currents to the field …

Investigating The Role Of Gene Duplication In Ribosomal Protein Evolution And Testing A Model Of Duplicate Gene Retention In Mammals, Asav Dharia Dec 2015

Investigating The Role Of Gene Duplication In Ribosomal Protein Evolution And Testing A Model Of Duplicate Gene Retention In Mammals, Asav Dharia

Doctoral Dissertations

Since Susumu Ohno’s seminal work in 1970, gene duplication has been widely recognized as the origin of multi-gene families and a major mechanism of evolutionary change. Understanding forces that govern the evolution of gene families through retention or loss of duplicated genes has been the subject of much inquiry and debate. The key challenge in this debate is accounting for retention of duplicate genes when, in the absence of some countervailing selective pressure leading to their retention, population genetics predicts that the overwhelming majority of duplicated genes should be lost. In an attempt to investigate the generation and retention of …
