Investigating The Impact Of Digital And Social Media On The Country Music Industry, Casey Thomas

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Recently, the country music industry has been impacted by the increased popularity of social media and digital music media sites among fans, and artists have begun trying to find ways to utilize these types of media for their benefit. This research project investigates several research questions: 1.) How are country music artists utilizing digital and social media sites to connect with fans? 2.) How do fans feel about artists using social and digital media to connect with fans? 3.) How has the inclusion of digital and social media impacted the ways in which country music artists connect to fans with …

School Shootings And Moral Panics: Differences In Media Framing Based On Race, Class, And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Ann Lavoie Dec 2015

School Shootings And Moral Panics: Differences In Media Framing Based On Race, Class, And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Ann Lavoie

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Media coverage of school shooting incidents are constructed using various frames that differ depending on the race, class, and socioeconomic status of the victims, perpetrators, and their communities. Moral panics have arisen as a result of these frames, having been constructed to instigate fear and affect policy in ways that can have negative effects on both students in general and, in particular, minority students in urban schools. In this study, I analyzed the framing language used in news content, the demographic information of the schools in which shootings occurred, and the amount of coverage afforded to the incidents. This content …

The Effects And Comparisons Of Receptive Live Music Listening And Expressive Music Making On Mood With Elderly Adults In A Congregate Residential Setting, Rory Kendall Bolton Dec 2015

The Effects And Comparisons Of Receptive Live Music Listening And Expressive Music Making On Mood With Elderly Adults In A Congregate Residential Setting, Rory Kendall Bolton

Theses and Dissertations

It is important to consider mood and its effect on elderly persons as many older adults will experience symptoms of depression. In prior studies, research indicated that preferred music listening and expressive music making can positively change mood in older adults. The purpose of this research study was to investigate the differences between receptive music listening and expressive music making (presented as a facilitated group music therapy session) and their effect on participants’ mood. The researcher hypothesized that 1) there would be a significant difference for pre and posttest standardized mood assessment (PANAS) scores between the receptive music listening and …

Phase Diagram Of A Strongly Interacting Spin-Imbalanced Fermi Gas, Ben A. Olsen, Melissa C. Revelle, Jacob A. Fry, Daniel E. Sheehy, Randall G. Hulet

Faculty Publications

We obtain the phase diagram of spin-imbalanced interacting Fermi gases from measurements of density profiles of Li6 atoms in a harmonic trap. These results agree with, and extend, previous experimental measurements. Measurements of the critical polarization at which the balanced superfluid core vanishes generally agree with previous experimental results and with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer and unitary regimes. We disagree with the QMC results in the Bose-Einstein condensate regime, however, where the measured critical polarizations are greater than theoretically predicted. We also measure the equation of state in the crossover regime for a gas with equal …

The Challenges Of Leading Change In Health-Care Delivery From The Frontline, Vivienne Byers Dec 2015

The Challenges Of Leading Change In Health-Care Delivery From The Frontline, Vivienne Byers

Articles

Aim: The public sector is facing turbulent times and this challenges nurses, who are expected to serve both patient interests and the efficiency drives of their organisations. In the context of implementing person-centred health policy, this paper explores the evolving role of front-line nurses as leaders and champions of change.

Background: Nurses can be seen to have some autonomy in health-care delivery. However, they are subject to systems of social control. In implementing person- centred policy, nurses can be seen to be doing the best they can within a constrained environment.

Method: A survey of nursing practice in person-centred health-policy …

Digital Energy Networks: A Post Occupancy Evaluation And Appraisal Of An Intelligent Low Energy Lighting System, Anthony Colohan, Joseph Teehan, Keith Sunderland, Martin Barrett, James Preston Dec 2015

Digital Energy Networks: A Post Occupancy Evaluation And Appraisal Of An Intelligent Low Energy Lighting System, Anthony Colohan, Joseph Teehan, Keith Sunderland, Martin Barrett, James Preston

Conference Papers

The reduction in the electrical power requirements of LED lighting and the coinciding advancements in digital technology have now enabled luminaires to be powered and controlled exclusively over safety extra low voltage (SELV) wiring systems. The implementation of LED luminaires powered via a centralised 48 Volt DC low-latency communication network, with the capability to gather real-time data, has provided the potential to yield considerable electrical energy savings within a building. This paper will present an appraisal of this technology and will examine the technologies potential to make electrical energy savings, improve the quality of lighting and achieve cost savings on …

Hexagonal Rare-Earth Manganites As Promising Photovoltaics And Light Polarizers, Xin Huang, Tula R. Paudel, Shuai Dong, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

Ferroelectric materials possess a spontaneous electric polarization and may be utilized in various technological applications ranging from nonvolatile memories to solar cells and light polarizers. Recently, hexagonal rareearth manganites, h-RMnO3 (R is a rare-earth ion), have attracted considerable interest due to their intricate multiferroic properties and improper ferroelectricity characterized by a sizable remnant polarization and high Curie temperature. Here we demonstrate that these compounds can serve as very efficient photovoltaic materials and, in addition, possess remarkable optical anisotropy properties. Using first-principles methods based on density functional theory and considering h-TbMnO3 as a representative …
