Longevity Of Mineral Supplements Within The Soil And Associated Use By White-Tailed Deer, Brian C. Peterson, Keith D. Koupal, Andrew K. Schissel, Cody M. Siegel
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Humans have baited wildlife such as white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) for generations with the primary purpose of increasing hunting harvest success. Baiting regulation changes are often considered by state management agencies as they pertain to hunting opportunity, fair chase, and disease risk. Cervids require a variety of minerals to supplement biological processes, especially sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P). We developed artificial mineral supplement sites set in front of trail cameras to monitor deer use. Pooled soil samples were collected at mineral sites and compared to the surrounding area to determine the longevity of elevated minerals levels …

Is The Zebrafish Zombie Mutant Caused By A Mutation In Cdc20?, Peyton Johnston
Honors Theses
The zombie mutant was identified as an early arrest mutant, stopping in development around the 10-somite stage (14 hours of development). Further inspection revealed that this mutant was a cell cycle mutant and cells in the mutant arrest during metaphase as early as the 5-somite stage (11.6 hours of development). A similar phenotype is seen in the Drosophila melanogaster cell cycle gene fizzy, known to be to be a homolog of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene, cell division cycle 20 (cdc20). CDC20 is an activator protein of the anaphase promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C), an ubiquitin E3 ligase that is …
Recommendations For The Development Of New Hospital Guidelines Due To The Effects Of Antibiotics On Clostridium Difficile Colitis, Megan Kohsel
Honors Theses
Clostridium difficile colitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the colon and diarrhea. This can even lead to death in some cases. The incidence of this infection and its overall effects have been on the rise throughout the last twenty years as antibiotics have been prescribed more frequently. Therefore, it is necessary that the rate of C. difficile infection is lowered by improved guidelines for hospitals, so that fewer people are infected and also that fewer antibiotics are prescribed to avoid the infection with C. difficle.
Experiential Avoidance Post-Trauma: Investigating Predictors Of Traumatic Stress And Problematic Behavior., Elise Trim
Experiential Avoidance Post-Trauma: Investigating Predictors Of Traumatic Stress And Problematic Behavior., Elise Trim
Honors Theses
Experiential avoidance (EA) is the unwillingness to remain in contact with distressing thoughts, feelings, memories, and other private experiences (Hayes et al., 2004; Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 1999). Although the use of EA may lead to immediate reductions in distress, prolonged use can result in problem behaviors such as substance misuse (Hayes, Wilson, Gifford, Follette, & Strosahl, 1996). Although a strong temporal relationship has yet to be established, findings suggest a possibility that EA could be a mechanism by which posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are developed and maintained (Krause, Mendelson, & Lynch, 2003; Rosenthal, Polusny, & Follette, 2006; Dvorak, …
Parentification, Alicia Wayne
Parentification, Alicia Wayne
Honors Theses
The phenomena of Parentification. Parentification is best outlined by Boszormenyi-Nagy & Spark (1973), as a family process in which children or adolescents assume adult responsibilities and/or parental roles that may be developmentally inappropriate. There has been much research done on the topic of Parentification and the effects of the psychopathology on the individual. (e.g. substance abuse, depression, self-esteem, recidivism, anxiety, etc.) Although some research has been done on birth order and/or family structure and how it correlates to parentification, no published research was found on parentification and its repercussions or ramifications for the youngest sibling(s) (i.e. those adolescent’s that were …
Religious Tourism And Economic Growth In Oil-Rich Countries: Evidence From Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Alodadi, James Benhin
Religious Tourism And Economic Growth In Oil-Rich Countries: Evidence From Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Alodadi, James Benhin
Plymouth Business School
Key studies have identified the need to diversify the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia economy beyond its heavily oil-based status if it is to attain long-term sustainable growth. Tourism, in particular religious tourism, has been recognized as one key non-tradable sector that could promote this growth. This article applies a time-series approach to examine the impact of the tourism industry on the economic prosperity of the Kingdom between 1970 and 2011. The results show that tourism only plays a minor role in improving economic growth when the economy as a whole is taken into consideration. However, when isolating the non-oil sectors, …

Characterization Of The Ability Of Yeast Probiotics And Paraprobiotics To Directly Interact With Gram-Positive And Gram-Negative Bacteria, Gabriel Alviola Posadas
Theses and Dissertations
Yeast probiotics and paraprobiotics, live and inactivated yeast cells, respectively, improve health and performance of livestock by stabilizing the intestinal microbial community. They have also been used for infection prevention and treatment. Despite much research already conducted, the mechanism of direct antagonism, or adhesion of bacteria to the probiotic/paraprobiotic, is under characterized. Additionally, it is unknown which probiotic/paraprobiotic is optimal to use for specific infections. The interactions between the yeast and certain pathogens were analyzed qualitatively with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and quantitatively with membrane filtration assays. Gram-positive bacteria were found to exhibit specificity under SEM. Through membrane filtration, Listeria …

Cold In-Place Recycling Characterization Framework For Single Or Multiple Component Binder Systems, Ben C. Cox
Cold In-Place Recycling Characterization Framework For Single Or Multiple Component Binder Systems, Ben C. Cox
Theses and Dissertations
Cold in-place recycling (CIR) is a pavement rehabilitation technique which has gained momentum in recent years. This momentum is due partly to its economic and sustainability characteristics, which has led to CIR market expansion. When pavement network deterioration is considered alongside increasing material costs, it is not beyond reason to expect demands on CIR to continue to increase. Historically, single component binder (SCB) systems, those with one stabilization binder (or two if the secondary binder dosage is 1% or less), have dominated the CIR market and could be considered the general state of practice. Common stabilization binders are either bituminous …
Conserving The Mississippi Gopher Frog (Lithobates Sevosa) Through The Use Of Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Katherine Michelle Graham
Conserving The Mississippi Gopher Frog (Lithobates Sevosa) Through The Use Of Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Katherine Michelle Graham
Theses and Dissertations
The Mississippi gopher frog (MGF, Lithobates sevosa) is a critically endangered amphibian which requires the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to successfully reproduce in captivity. Several challenges to successfully breeding MGFs were investigated to improve reproduction in this species. Accurate identification of biological sex is a necessary first step to reproducing species, thus several non-invasive techniques for sex identification were compared in the weakly dimorphic MGF. Reliably obtaining eggs from female MGFs has also proved difficult, therefore, four exogenous hormone therapies were compared for their success to induce ovulation. Ultrasound imaging was used alongside hormone treatments to improve understanding …

Development Of Intermediate And High Strain Rate Experimentation And Material Modeling Of Viscoplastic Metals, Wilburn Ray Whittington
Theses and Dissertations
This work presents a combined theoretical-experimental study of strain rate behavior in metals. The method is to experimentally calibrate and validate an Internal State Variable (ISV) constitutive model with a wide range of strain rate sensitivity. Therefore a practical apparatus and methodology for performing highly sought-after intermediate strain rate experimentation was created. For the first time in reported literature, the structure-property relations of Rolled Homogeneous Armor is quantified at the microscale and modeled with varying strain rates, temperatures, and stress states to capture plasticity and damage with a single set of constants that includes intermediate strain rates. A rolled homogeneous …
Doppler Tracking, Christopher Jacob Thomas
Doppler Tracking, Christopher Jacob Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
This study addresses the development of a methodology using the Doppler Effect for high-resolution, short-range tracking of small projectiles and vehicles. Minimal impact on the design of the moving object is achieved by incorporating only a transmitter in it and using ground stations for all other components. This is particularly useful for tracking objects such as sports balls that have configurations and materials that are not conducive to housing onboard instrumentation. The methodology developed here uses four or more receivers to monitor a constant frequency signal emitted by the object. Efficient and accurate schemes for filtering the raw signals, determining …

Design And Development Of A Stormwater Policy Decision-Making Tool, Stephanie Joy Sigman
Design And Development Of A Stormwater Policy Decision-Making Tool, Stephanie Joy Sigman
Theses and Dissertations
Municipalities tend to develop their stormwater management policy by examining those of their neighboring communities, chosen out of convenience and perception of similarity rather than a purposeful, directed search. Alternatively, having a policy that is backed by science creates regulations that policy makers can confidently support. To address this issue, the model used in this study incorporates local rainfall and development data to analyze stormwater runoff volumes for various storm events using one year of development data from Chattanooga, Tennessee. The runoff values are used to analyze several policy combinations based on simplified policies, model policies, and customizable policies. Outputs …

Specifically, we examine specific variables of child sleep including sleep duration, sleep onset, and nightwakings and its relation to mother’s sleep onset, sleep duration, and sleep quality while controlling for child age. After conducting correlations and hierarchal regressions, data analysis indicated a positive association between child sleep onset and mother’s sleep onset, and significant negative relation to mother’s sleep duration and sleep quality. Contrary to expectations, children’s sleep duration and nightwakings were not associated with any of the mother’s …
A Role Of Dispersed Phase Carbon-Length And Small Amphipathic Coemulsifier In Bovine Serum Albumin Stabilized Nanoemulsions Designed To Deliver Bleaching Agent To Decolorized Fresh Whey, Jingyi Yan
Theses and Dissertations
Benzoyl peroxide (BP), used to bleach annatto in cheese whey, was encapsulated within the hydrophobic dispersed phase (phi) of nanoemulsions (NEs) to minimize its degradation and extend its efficacy to minimized usage levels. Three purified, saturated short-chain fatty acids of varying chain lengths: butyric (C4), hexanoic (C6) and octanoic (C8) acid, were chosen as the phi to completely dissolve various concentrations of BP. Stabilization was achieved with different concentrations and combinations of primary emulsifier (E), bovine serum albumin, and coemulsifier (CE), Tween 20. Different ultra-high pressures (UHP) were used to generate a stable NE. The best result was made by …
Energy Cost Optimization For Strongly Stable Multi-Hop Green Cellular Networks, Weixian Liao
Energy Cost Optimization For Strongly Stable Multi-Hop Green Cellular Networks, Weixian Liao
Theses and Dissertations
Last decade witnessed the explosive growth in mobile devices and their traffic demand, and hence the significant increase in the energy cost of the cellular service providers. One major component of energy expenditure comes from the operation of base stations. How to reduce energy cost of base stations while satisfying users’ soaring demands has become an imperative yet challenging problem. In this dissertation, we investigate the minimization of the long-term time-averaged expected energy cost while guaranteeing network strong stability. Specifically, considering flow routing, link scheduling, and energy constraints, we formulate a time-coupling stochastic Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) problem, which is …

Examination Of The Effects Of Vitamin D Supplementation On The In Vitro Calcification Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells, Kevin Andrew Bennett
Examination Of The Effects Of Vitamin D Supplementation On The In Vitro Calcification Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells, Kevin Andrew Bennett
Theses and Dissertations
Medial calcification refers to mineral deposition in the middle layer of arteries. This mineralization is common in chronic kidney disease patients and causes an increased chance of cardiovascular complications. Calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, is often administered to these patients to treat an associated condition, secondary hyperparathyroidism. Unfortunately, calcitriol treatment may promote vascular calcification due to increasing serum calcium and phosphate. We examined the effects of calcitriol supplementation on vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) calcification, through atomic absorption, scanning electron microscopy, and western blot analysis. Additionally, we examined the effects of the combinations of calcitriol, fibroblast growth factor …
