Response Surface Analysis Of Trapped-Vortex Augmented Airfoils, Anup Devidas Zope Dec 2015

Response Surface Analysis Of Trapped-Vortex Augmented Airfoils, Anup Devidas Zope

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the effect of a passive trapped-vortex cell on lift to drag (L/D) ratio of an FFA-W3-301 airfoil is studied. The upper surface of the airfoil was modified to incorporate a cavity defined by seven parameters. The L/D ratio of the airfoil is modeled using a radial basis function metamodel. This model is used to find the optimal design parameter values that give the highest L/D. The numerical results indicate that the L/D ratio is most sensitive to the position on an airfoil’s upper surface at which the cavity starts, the position of the end point of the …

Biodiversity And The Role Of Bioturbating Invertebrates In Nutrient Cycling In Stormwater Ponds, Kerry Lee Kuntz Dec 2015

Biodiversity And The Role Of Bioturbating Invertebrates In Nutrient Cycling In Stormwater Ponds, Kerry Lee Kuntz

Theses

Stormwater retention ponds are typically constructed to manage stormwater in commercial and residential areas, thereby reducing flooding and erosion and improving downstream water quality. Although auxiliary ecosystem services of stormwater ponds are less often recognized, these small aquatic ecosystems may also serve as habitat for aquatic flora and fauna and can be hotspots for biogeochemical cycling. This study examined the biological communities and physicochemical environment of 9 stormwater ponds in Rochester, New York, USA to assess their role in supporting biodiversity and facilitating carbon and nutrient cycling in developed landscapes. A field study revealed that pond age and vegetation cover …

Soil Moisture Affects Growing-Season Wildfire Size In The Southern Great Plains, Erik S. Krueger, Tyson E. Ochsner, David M. Engle, J. D. Carlson, Dirac L. Twidwell, Samuel D. Fuhlendorf

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The increasing availability of soil moisture data presents an opportunity for its use in wildfire danger assessments, but research regarding the influence of soil moisture on wildfires is scarce. Our objective was to identify relationships between soil moisture and wildfire size for Oklahoma wildfires during the growing (May-October) and dormant seasons (November-April). We hypothesized that soil moisture influences wildfire size when vegetation is growing but is less important when most vegetation is dead or dormant. Soil moisture, as fraction of available water capacity (FAW), and commonly measured weather variables were determined for 38,419 wildfires from 2000–2012. Wildfires were grouped by …

Prior to harvest, a sample of the broilers (n = 900) were subjected to short-term stress (38 °C for 2 h), and the remaining broilers (n = 150) were maintained at control conditions (21 °C for 2 h). From the stressed and control condition broilers, breast samples were characterized by …

Rational Bernoulli Functions For Solving Problems On Unbounded Domains, Velinda Remona Calvert Dec 2015

Rational Bernoulli Functions For Solving Problems On Unbounded Domains, Velinda Remona Calvert

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, a new numerical method for solving some problems on the semiinfinite domain is presented. The method is based upon the modified rational Bernoulli functions. These functions are first introduced. Operational matrices of derivative and product of modified rational Bernoulli functions are then derived and are utilized to reduce the solution of the equations to a system of algebraic equations. This method is used to solve the following problems: Lane-Emden type equations, Volterra’s population model, Blasius equation, and MHD Falkner-Skan equation. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique.

The Political Economy Of Soda Taxation, Sriparna Ghosh, Joshua C. Hall Dec 2015

The Political Economy Of Soda Taxation, Sriparna Ghosh, Joshua C. Hall

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

There has been an increase in the prevalence of obesity in the United States over the past several decades. The academic literature has highlighted numerous possible causes, including the consumption of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages. Soda taxes have been suggested as a way of reducing the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and a number of U.S. states "disfavor" sugar-sweetened beverages relative to food in their tax code. In this note we employ a political economy model to explain the adoption of these \soda taxes." We find that more Democratic states and those with a higher rate of adult obesity are …

The Middle Stone Age On The Margins: Chronological And Archaeological Contexts For Hominin Behavioral Evolution In The Middle And Late Pleistocene Of East Africa., Nicholas T. Blegen

Doctoral Dissertations

The later Middle through early Late Pleistocene (~100–400 ka) of East Africa is an important time and place for the evolution of our species. This period records the first appearance of Homo sapiens and spans significant technological changes including the decline of large handheld stone tools characteristic of the Acheulean, the development of stone tool technologies collectively known as the Middle Stone Age (MSA). These include diverse Levallois prepared core techniques and the manufacture and use of pointed weapons. It is in association with MSA technologies in sub-Saharan Africa that most of the behaviors characteristic of modern humans first appear. …

The American Reception Of Gabriel Fauré: From Francophile Boston, 1892‒1945, To The Broader Postwar Mainstream, Heather De Savage

Doctoral Dissertations

The importance of French influences in American musical life from the 1920s onward, particularly as personified in the teaching of Nadia Boulanger, has long been central to narratives of American music; the much earlier impact of Gabriel Fauré, however, has been largely ignored. This dissertation examines Fauré’s reception in the U.S., through a detailed consideration of performance and criticism in Boston between 1892 and 1945, and a more selective examination of aspects of the composer's broader reception both during and after this time.

Boston’s increasingly Francophile orientation around 1900 encouraged the presence of French music on concert programs, and distinguished …

Examining The Effect Of Material Hardship On Parenting Stress In Unmarried Parents: The Moderating Roles Of Instrumental Support, Supportive Coparenting, Fathers' Residential Status, And Race, Artie S. Maharaj Dec 2015

Examining The Effect Of Material Hardship On Parenting Stress In Unmarried Parents: The Moderating Roles Of Instrumental Support, Supportive Coparenting, Fathers' Residential Status, And Race, Artie S. Maharaj

Doctoral Dissertations

Researchers have been particularly interested in how contextual and psychosocial factors increase unmarried parents’ risk for parenting stress because of its potentially harmful impact on parental and child outcomes (Belsky, 1984; Crnic & Low, 2002; Peterson, Hennon, & Knox, 2010). In particular, research has shown that economic hardship increases parents’ risk for parenting stress (Bronte-Tinkew, Horowitz, & Carrano, 2010; DeKylen, Brooks-Gunn, McLanahan, & Knab, 2006; Teitler, Reichman, & Nepomnyaschy, 2004). The goal of this study was to test a model that examined: (1) the impact of mothers’ material hardship on both mothers’ and fathers’ parenting stress in unmarried families; and …
