Investigating Phylogenetic Relationships Of Mosquito-Borne Avian Malaria In Mississippi, David Alan Larson Dec 2015

Investigating Phylogenetic Relationships Of Mosquito-Borne Avian Malaria In Mississippi, David Alan Larson

Theses and Dissertations

The vectors of avian malaria (Haemosporida) are an understudied component of wildlife disease ecology. Most studies of avian malaria have focused on the secondary bird hosts. This imbalance leaves a significant gap in our knowledge and understanding of the insect hosts. This study investigates the diversity of malaria parasites carried by mosquitoes (Diptera, Culicidae) in the state of Mississippi. Using PCR techniques, haemosporidian infection rates were determined and parasites were identified in a phylogenetic context to those previously annotated. A total of 27,157 female mosquitoes representing 15 species were captured. Five of those species tested positive for malaria parasites with …

Investigating The Relationship Between Stream Gauge Stage And Nearby Soil Moisture In A Longleaf Pine Biome, Cheryl S. Mclaurin

Theses and Dissertations

With over 10,000 acres burned in wildland fires in 2014 in Mississippi, accurate fire hazard prediction is of great importance. Soil moisture, fuel moisture, and fire hazard are inextricably linked. Remote estimation of soil moisture in the Southeastern United States for fire hazard modeling is hampered by the use of models engineered for other physiographic regions and the prevalence of deep, fast-draining sands underneath heavy vegetation. United States Geologic Service hydrographs were investigated and compared to nearby soil moisture and precipitation readings in an attempt to identify the links between stream gauge readings and watershed soil moisture. Stream gauge peaks …

Theses and Dissertations

Commercial broilers are fed exclusively pelleted diets; this is due to research that has demonstrated numerous benefits to feeding pellets. The first objective was to investigate the effects of modest improvements in pellet quality on two modern broiler strains. Regardless of strain, feeding 80% pellets improved broiler performance from d 28 to 42. The second objective was to investigate the effects of feed form and liquid application method on feed augering segregation and subsequent broiler performance. In general, percent pellets steadily decreased across location throughout feed augering. Also, phytase segregation occurred throughout augering and was exacerbated in post-pellet liquid application …

First Principles Investigation Of Substituted Strontium Hexaferrite, Vivek Dixit Dec 2015

First Principles Investigation Of Substituted Strontium Hexaferrite, Vivek Dixit

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates how the magnetic properties of strontium hexaferrite change upon the substitution of foreign atoms at the Fe sites. Strontium hexaferrite, SrFe12O19 is a commonly used hard magnetic material and is produced in large quantities (around 500,000 tons per year). For different applications of strontium hexaferrite, its magnetic properties can be tuned by a proper substitution of the foreign atoms. Experimental screening for a proper substitution is a cost-intensive and time-consuming process, whereas computationally it can be done more efficiently. We used the ‘density functional theory’ a first principles based method to study substituted strontium hexaferrite. The site …

Groups Of Isometries Associated With Automorphisms Of The Half - Plane, Job Otieno Bonyo Dec 2015

Groups Of Isometries Associated With Automorphisms Of The Half - Plane, Job Otieno Bonyo

Theses and Dissertations

The study of integral operators on spaces of analytic functions has been considered for the past few decades. However, most of the studies in this line are based on spaces of analytic functions of the unit disc. For the analytic spaces of the upper half-plane, the literature is still scanty. Most notable is the recent work of Siskakis and Arvanitidis concerning the classical Ces`aro operator on Hardy spaces of the upper half-plane. In this dissertation, we characterize all continuous one-parameter groups of automorphisms of the upper halfplane according to the nature and location of their fixed points into three distinct …

Selection Dynamics In Heliconius Hybrid Zones And The Origin Of Adaptive Variation, Steven Grant Shaak Dec 2015

Selection Dynamics In Heliconius Hybrid Zones And The Origin Of Adaptive Variation, Steven Grant Shaak

Theses and Dissertations

There is repeated evidence that hybridization is a major contributor to the production of adaptive diversity; however, the evolutionary fate of hybrids in natural populations remains poorly understood. In Heliconius butterflies, hybridization is common and responsible for generating a variety of warning color patterns across the genus. Predator avoidance of warning colorations appears to largely be learned, which drives strong positive frequency-dependent selection. This creates a paradox for hybrid lineages: how do novel hybrid forms manage to establish and persist under such strong selection? In this dissertation, I present a series of studies centered on the selection dynamics of Heliconius …

Simulation Of An Axion Search Experiment, Yipeng Jiang Dec 2015

Simulation Of An Axion Search Experiment, Yipeng Jiang

Theses and Dissertations

The resolution of the strong CP problem postulates a new dark matter candidate known as the axion. Axions can couple with photons in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Light shining through wall method (LSW) uses a lead wall inside a cavity with a strong magnetic field to coupled axions with photons then detect axions when the axions cross the lead wall and convert back to photons. The axion signal and thermal noise are simulated and by comparing the simulated signals after they have been rectified and integrated, the sensitivity of the planned experiment was determined.

Spatial Pattern Analysis Of Agricultural Soil Properties Using Gis, Corrin Jared Mccarn Dec 2015

Spatial Pattern Analysis Of Agricultural Soil Properties Using Gis, Corrin Jared Mccarn

Theses and Dissertations

Agricultural soil properties exhibit variation over field plot scales that can ultimately effect the yield. This study performs multiple spatial pattern analyses in order to design spatially dependent regression models to better understand the interaction between these soil properties. The Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) and Calcium-Magnesium Ratio (CaMgR) are analyzed with respect to Calcium, Magnesium, and soil moisture values. The CEC and CaMgR are then used to determine impact on the yield values present for the field. Results of this study show a significant measure of model parsimony (0.979) for the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model of the CEC with …

Superfluids Of Fermions In Spin-Orbit Coupled Systems And Photons Inside A Cavity, Yi-Xiang Yu

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation introduces some new properties of both superfluid phases of fermions with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and superradiant phases of photons in an optical cavity. The effects of SOC on the phase transition between normal and superfluid phase are revealed; an unconventional crossover driven by SOC from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state to the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) state is verified in three different systems; and two kinds of excitations, a Goldstone mode and a Higgs mode, are demonstrated to occur in a quantum optical system. We investigate the BCS superfluid state of two-component atomic Fermi gases in the presence of three …

Synthesis And Catalytic Activity Of -Nhc Group 9 Metal Pincer Complexes, Sean William Reilly Dec 2015

Synthesis And Catalytic Activity Of -Nhc Group 9 Metal Pincer Complexes, Sean William Reilly

Theses and Dissertations

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are one of the few ligand systems that can finely tune transition metal catalysts via sterics and electronics. The strong sigma-donating properties of these ancillary ligands allow the development of robust tridentate NHC pincer framework, which has emerged as an alternative to the phosphine pincer ligands. The combination of NHC and pincer systems has resulted in a new generation of catalytically active organometallic complexes reported throughout the literature. -NHC Rh pincer complexes were found to be catalytically active in C-C and C-B bond formation via 1,4dition reactions. In addition, the in-situ generated -NHC Ir(H) pincer complex demonstrated …

Men were more likely to report consumption and diversion, but not more likely to report misuse of their own prescription stimulants. Overall, men reported lower risk perceptions associated with consumption of others’ prescription stimulants. This finding held true for legal and health risk perceptions for those uninvolved in diversion or consumption, for health risk …

Impact Of Corn Earworm On Field Corn Yield And Grain Quality, Jenny Lee Bibb Dec 2015

Impact Of Corn Earworm On Field Corn Yield And Grain Quality, Jenny Lee Bibb

Theses and Dissertations

Field corn, Zea mays L., has been introduced to the market with pyramided Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn technologies. These technologies reduce kernel damage from ear feeding caterpillar pests, including corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie). The first generation Bt traits in field corn demonstrated limited activity on corn earworm feeding on grain in ears. The pyramided corn technologies have greater cumulative protein concentrations and improved expression throughout the plant, so these corn traits should provide an effective management tool against these pests. In addition, reduced kernel injury may also have a direct effect on physical grain quality. The results for this …
