Understanding Group Cohesion Of Festival And Events Attendees Satifaction And Intention To Revisit, Younsuk Kong
Understanding Group Cohesion Of Festival And Events Attendees Satifaction And Intention To Revisit, Younsuk Kong
All Dissertations
Festivals and events provide a venue for individuals to relax, to spend time with their family, to escape from the daily demands of modern life, to enjoy themselves and to socialize as a way to enhance their quality of life. In addition, many leaders have used festival and events for the economic development of their communities (Getz & Frisby, 1988). However, according to Petrick and Li (2006), this research has been limited to topics associated with marketing, management and economic impact. For example, Finkel, McGillivaray, McPherson, & Robinson (2013) pointed out that scholars have investigated the relationships between festival and …

On June 25, 2012, I walked into the dean's office at Texas Wesleyan University School of Law. He and I had been summoned by our university president to a hastily called meeting to discuss the law school's "academic program." Since I helped oversee our academic program as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the time, I was not particularly looking forward to the meeting. I assumed there would be bad news of some sort.
Instead, we were told that Texas Wesleyan University ("TWU") and Texas A&M University ("TAMU") were in negotiations that, it was expected, would result in a "strategic …

Online Psychoeducational Therapy For Chronic Pain, Cynthia Marie Nakoski
Online Psychoeducational Therapy For Chronic Pain, Cynthia Marie Nakoski
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The pain experience consists of many factors including biological, psychological, social and spiritual that can exacerbate and perpetuate it, often leading to chronic pain. Provision of an online psychoeducational course, inclusive of social networking capabilities, offers remote access to invaluable information for the enhancement of self-efficacy in the treatment of chronic pain. The focus of this doctoral project was the creation of a website that includes pain management lessons comprised of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Family Therapy, and Spirituality modules. The website incorporates psychometrics, automated course tracking, and social network components allowing for research reporting, self-paced interactive …

Comparison Of Text Analysis Programs For Identification Of Emotional Expression, Michelle Mcdonnell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Studies have show that written emotional expression assists in the recovery and alleviates the pain associated with traumatic experiences, cancer diagnoses, and chronic illnesses. Written interventions have been developed to utilize this emotional coping approach. Unfortunately, evaluation of participants and patients written text is time consuming and subjective to the coder. Researchers have developed computational text analysis programs in an attempt to find an alternative to human coders for text analysis. The current study will utilize data from previous research performed by Owen et al., (2005) entitled Randomized Pilot of a Self-Guided Internet Coping Group for Women With Early Stage …

Dialectical Behavior Therapy And Adolescent Patient Treatment Dropout, Danessa Mayo
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Attrition in mental health treatment is an area of concern among the adolescent population, especially with patients engaged in deliberate self-harm. The purpose of this study was to examine the treatment attrition rate for adolescents with deliberate self-harm in an adapted dialectical behavior therapy intensive outpatient program. A total of 141 adolescents previously enrolled in the program were available for the study. Results demonstrated a 31.9% dropout rate. Graduates indicated greater improvement of overall distress from baseline to post-treatment than dropouts. Dropouts attended an average of 12 treatment sessions. Several factors were examined to identify potential predictors of patient treatment …
Effect Of Vestibular Adaptation Exercises On Chronic Motion Sensitivity, Danah Alyahya
Effect Of Vestibular Adaptation Exercises On Chronic Motion Sensitivity, Danah Alyahya
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Dizziness is one of the most common complaints reported to primary care physicians. It is often associated with vestibular dysfunction and typically impacts postural stability. Motion sickness, or motion sensitivity, is stimulated by abnormal spatial orientation and is a common symptom related to dizziness and postural instability. The main cause of the motion sensitivity is aberrant sensory input from the visual, vestibular and somatosensory systems. The aim of this study was to measure the effect of vestibular adaptation exercises on postural stability in young healthy adults with subjective awareness of chronic motion sensitivity.

Paternal Depression In The Peripartum Period: An International Delphi Study, Cassidy J. Freitas
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This dissertation aims to reach consensus on the defining factors of Paternal Peripartum Depression (PPPD) as well as identify research priorities through the Delphi method. Peripartum Depression is a major health issue for parents and their children. Fathers are at risk for peripartum depression due to the changes in identity, relationship, and biology they face during their transition to parenthood. A father’s mental health plays an intimate role in the overall health and outcomes of his family, but up until this point has been significantly overlooked. Due to the paucity of research and lack of clear consensus on the identifying …
Getting To The Doctor: Bpss Factors Of Health Care Utilization In Fragile Families, Veronica P. Kuhn
Getting To The Doctor: Bpss Factors Of Health Care Utilization In Fragile Families, Veronica P. Kuhn
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The number of fragile families where a child is born to unwed parents has increased greatly over the past half-century and now represents a diverse population in the United States (Ventura, 2009). These families, who are predominantly African American and Hispanic (Hummer & Hamilton, 2010) and are more likely to live in poverty and experience poorer health, face significant barriers to access and utilize health care services (De Marco & De Marco, 2009; Williams, 2008). Limited research exists on how these facets of the illness experience might differ for fragile families whose resources are limited prior to illness. The Biopsychosocial …

Turning I Into Me: Imagining Your Future Self, Cn Macrae, Jp Mitchell, Ka Tait, Dl Mcnamara, Et Al
School of Psychology
A widely endorsed belief is that perceivers imagine their present selves using a different representational format than imagining their future selves (i.e., near future=first-person; distant future=third-person). But is this really the case? Responding to the paucity of work on this topic, here we considered how temporal distance influences the extent to which individuals direct their attention outward or inward during a brief imaginary episode. Using a non-verbal measure of visual perspective taking (i.e., letter-drawing task) our results confirmed the hypothesized relation between temporal distance and conceptions of the self. Whereas simulations of an event in the near future were dominated …
To A Better Understanding Of Professional Practice: Provider Decision-Making When Delivering Hiv Services, Carizma Amila Chapman
To A Better Understanding Of Professional Practice: Provider Decision-Making When Delivering Hiv Services, Carizma Amila Chapman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Over the last several decades an abundance of research has been conducted on HIV/AIDS. These studies have focused on the infection, impact of the disease on the health and quality of life of people living with the infection, and on treatment effectiveness. However, limited studies are available that explore the experiences of providers delivering HIV/AIDS services. Research demonstrates that providers have an important impact on treatment, shaping not only patient retention, but also treatment adherence. The critical role HIV/AIDS providers have in shaping treatment makes understanding provider experiences a pertinent area of inquiry to understand HIV/AIDS care. In this study, …

The insula and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) share functional, histological, transcriptional and developmental characteristics and they serve higher cognitive functions of theoretical relevance to schizophrenia and related disorders. Meta-analyses and multivariate analysis of structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans indicate that gray matter density and volume reductions in schizophrenia are the most consistent and pronounced in a network primarily composed of the insula and mPFC. We used source-based morphometry, a multivariate technique optimized for structural MRI, in a large sample of randomly ascertained pedigrees (N = 887) to derive an insula-mPFC component and to investigate its genetic determinants. Firstly, we …

An Exploratory Investigation Of Tele-Counseling: Looking At The Power Of Therapeutic Alliance In Improving Wellness, Jorge Rostro
Theses and Dissertations
The present study explored the power of one tele-counseling session to elicit change within post wellness ratings scores and the relationship between clients’ perceptions of relationship, goals and topics, approach and method, and overall session with clients’ wellness ratings. Results indicated that the mean for post-session wellness was significantly greater than pre-test wellness ratings. The standardized effect size, d, was .43, indicative of a moderate effect size. No difference was found between client’s perceptions of predictor variables with post-wellness rating scores. This study adds support for the use of tele-counseling services as one session might have the power to elicit …
Predicting Outcomes In Investment Treaty Arbitration, Susan Franck
Predicting Outcomes In Investment Treaty Arbitration, Susan Franck
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Crafting appropriate dispute settlement processes is challenging for any conflict-management system, particularly for politically sensitive international economic law disputes. As the United States negotiates investment treaties with Asian and European countries, the terms of dispute settlement have become contentious. There is a vigorous debate about whether investment treaty arbitration (ITA) is an appropriate dispute settlement mechanism. While some sing the praises of ITA, others offer a spirited critique. Some critics claim that ITA is biased against states, while others suggest ITA is predictable but unfair due to factors like arbitrator identity or venue. Using data from 159 final cases derived …
Influence Of Benagene Supplementation In Conjunction With High Intensity Cycling Exercise, Wilson P. Simmons
Influence Of Benagene Supplementation In Conjunction With High Intensity Cycling Exercise, Wilson P. Simmons
Honors Theses
High intensity aerobic performance is determined by the body’s maximal ability to match lactate production and clearance rates, defined as the lactate threshold (LaTh). Intensities performed above the LaTh result in accumulation of lactate causing fatigue. In a double-blind experiment, using trained cyclists and triathletes, we investigated skeletal muscle adaptations that occurred following 28-days of Benagene supplementation (oxaloacetate). The testing protocol consisted of an initial cycle test (T1) to measure VO2max, LaTh, respiratory exchange ratio (RER), power output (PO) and heart rate (HR). Testing began after a 15-min warm-up at 75W, beginning at 100W, increasing 30W each 3-min …

Factors Affecting Guest Satisfaction In The Restaurant Industry Of South Mississippi, Kinsey M. Eiland
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that affect guest services in the restaurant industry of South Mississippi as examined from the line level employee. This satisfaction can include things in the servicescape (e.g. noise level, parking availability) as well as the service support that a waiter receives from their coworkers and supervisors. By combining a research model that examines the guest server exchange with a typical guest satisfaction questionnaire, the researcher developed a two part internet survey to be administered to both restaurant patrons as well as line level employees working in the restaurant industry. The …
Situating Care In Mainstream Health Economics: An Ethical Dilemma?, John B. Davis, Robert Mcmaster
Situating Care In Mainstream Health Economics: An Ethical Dilemma?, John B. Davis, Robert Mcmaster
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
Standard health economics concentrates on the provision of care by medical professionals. Yet ‘care’ receives scant analysis; it is portrayed as a spillover effect or externality in the form of interdependent utility functions. In this context care can only be conceived as either acts of altruism or as social capital. Both conceptions are subject to considerable problems stemming from mainstream health economics’ reliance on a reductionist social model built around instrumental rationality and consequentialism. Subsequently, this implies a disregard for moral rules and duties and the compassionate aspects of behaviour. Care as an externality is a second-order concern relative to …
Pilot Perception Of Electronic Flight Bags At Part 121 Air Carriers, Donley Lytle
Pilot Perception Of Electronic Flight Bags At Part 121 Air Carriers, Donley Lytle
Theses and Dissertations
Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) have been approved for use by pilots in flight operations at many Part 121 air carriers in the United States since 2010. As an automated device replacing paper in the cockpit, there are many human factor issues that relate to operation of the EFB. EFBs have been cited in accidents and incidents worldwide in large, transport category aircraft. While the EFB was not cited as the main cause of the accident/incident, it has been listed as a contributing factor. This study looks at pilot perception related to the safety aspect of the EFB in flight operations …
General Aviation Maintenance Technician Fatigue And Work/Rest Periods, Blaise Eisenbeil
General Aviation Maintenance Technician Fatigue And Work/Rest Periods, Blaise Eisenbeil
Theses and Dissertations
Fatigue has been studied extensively within the ranks of commercial airline pilots, and for them, regulations have been modified several times to include various rest and work periods. These regulations are often supplemented by union provisions found in contracts with airlines. Conversely, Aviation Maintenance Technicians (AMTs) have been largely overlooked, especially in the general aviation industry. The goals of this research project are to determine (a) if any rest/work rules are in place for 14 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Part 145 AMTs, and (b) the body of literature on fatigue in relation to operational errors by AMTs. Note: Any …

The Impact Of Multimorbidity On Adult Physical And Mental Health In Low- And Middle-Income Countries: What Does The Study On Global Ageing And Adult Health (Sage) Reveal?, P Arokiasamy, U Uttamacharya, K Jain, Rb Biritwum, Et Al
School of Psychology
BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases contribute a large share of disease burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Chronic diseases have a tendency to occur simultaneously and where there are two or more such conditions, this is termed as 'multimorbidity'. Multimorbidity is associated with adverse health outcomes, but limited research has been undertaken in LMICs. Therefore, this study examines the prevalence and correlates of multimorbidity as well as the associations between multimorbidity and self-rated health, activities of daily living (ADLs), quality of life, and depression across six LMICs. METHODS: Data was obtained from the WHO's Study on global AGEing and adult health …
Analysis Of Noise As A Way Of Understanding Emotion And Making An Installation: Reflection On Phenomenological, Parametric, Inner And Outer Worlds Meeting And Becoming Audible, P Lopreiato
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This article is centred on the idea that from the analysis and interpretation of data from the crowd noise (at historical and engaging events) it is possible to define the manifestation of extroversion of people’s perceptions and emotions. What I seek to reveal in my artistic research is not the conjugation of perceptions and emotions for individual participants but rather the collective feeling, the energy that connects and refines the involvement of individuals and creates from it a new and indivisible whole: a collective perception and sentiment that in the multilayering of noise finds its full manifestation. Crowd noise, therefore, …

Speculative Somatics, Ds Maranan
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Based on a presentation at The Undivided Mind conference at Plymouth University, this article sketches out speculative applications of somatics, the first person, phenomenological study of sensation, perception and movement. I first introduce the subject of somatics through an experiential exercise for the reader before summarizing theoretical aspects of somatic study. Drawing from the literature in embodied cognition and from personal recollections of embodied experiences, I propose how somatic approaches could potentially be used in working with immigrant communities, living in outer space, and empathizing with non-human animals.
Factors Influencing Critical Care Nurses To Speak Up When Patients Are At Risk For Harm: Development Of An Instrument, Deborah Ruth Crumpler
Factors Influencing Critical Care Nurses To Speak Up When Patients Are At Risk For Harm: Development Of An Instrument, Deborah Ruth Crumpler
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Nurses intervene in situations where patients may be at risk for harm, particularly in critical care units where risk due to severity of illness and complexity of treatment is higher. Although safety improvements have been made, nurses still report barriers to speaking-up. Improvement in skilled communication and true collaboration among health care professionals begins with assessment of the problem. Attitudes and beliefs that influence speaking-up behaviors among critical care nurses have not been well-documented. This research study utilized a mixed-method design framed by the Theory of Planned Behavior to explore factors associated with intention to speak up among critical care …

Happiness In Modern Society: Why Intelligence And Ethnic Composition Matter, Satoshi Kanazawa, Norman P. Li
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Recent developments in evolutionary psychology suggest that living among others of the same ethnicity might make individuals happier and further that such an effect of the ethnic composition on life satisfaction may be stronger among less intelligent individuals. Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health showed that White Americans had significantly greater life satisfaction than all other ethnic groups in the US and this was largely due to the fact that they were the majority ethnic group; minority Americans who lived in counties where they were the numerical majority had just as much life satisfaction as White Americans …

Population ageing and the well-being of older persons are major emerging challenges for families, communities and government in Thailand as in much of Asia. The Thai government has been giving very serious attention to ageing issues. This was clearly indicated by the adoption of the Second National Plan for Older Persons covering 2002-2021, the prominence of ageing issues in the 2012-16 National Economic and Social Development Plan, and a 2015 establishment of the Department of Older Persons with expanded authority to carry out programs to support elderly Thais. Furthermore, the Old Age Allowance program was expanded in 2009 into a …
