Understanding Social Mobility, Economic Environment, And Their Effects On Social Policy Attitudes, Patrick Lown Dec 2015

Understanding Social Mobility, Economic Environment, And Their Effects On Social Policy Attitudes, Patrick Lown

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Economic opportunity has long been a topic of interest among students of society and politics, and has made its way back to the forefront of inquiry with the resurgence of levels of inequality beyond those observed during the Gilded Age in the 1920s. Recent studies conducted by The Pew Charitable Trust Mobility Project, as well as others, have revealed that despite Americans’ beliefs in a land of opportunity, the chances to get ahead in life have dwindled for many. However, there is a dearth of information about what members of the public think about their own economic mobility and the …

The Resurrection Of Self: How Deconversion From Religious Belief To Atheism Healed A History Of Rejection, Trauma, And Shame, Amy Phillips Dec 2015

The Resurrection Of Self: How Deconversion From Religious Belief To Atheism Healed A History Of Rejection, Trauma, And Shame, Amy Phillips

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

There are two experiences that atheists have which are not yet well understood: discrimination and deconversion. Through semi-structured interviews, designed to better understand the deconversion process and the relationships of 35 American atheists living in both the Northeast and Southern regions of the United States, a better understanding of these experiences emerged. These individuals had damaging histories, which included abuse, abandonment and/or outsider status. These elements combined with religious teachings yielded a sense of self-as-bad in which respondents experienced feelings of shame, depression, anxiety, and in some cases suicidality. The 25 males, 9 females and 1 transwoman in this study …

Postpartum Psychological Birth Trauma Among African American Adolescents, Uman Gahlot

2015 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Background: Adolescent pregnancy is a current social problem, and despite a recent decline it continues to be a societal issue. At-risk behaviors potentially culminating in unintended pregnancies have been noted to be frequent among African American (AA) adolescents and are often related to a history of abuse and/or depression. Adverse outcomes such as preterm births also are high among AA adolescents. Abuse, depression, and infant outcome have been recognized to impact the birth experience for adults. Yet, little research has been conducted examining the AA adolescent’s experience with birth and the potential for birth trauma when disclosing a history of …

Creating A Consolidated Business Systems Toolkit For Enterprise Resource Planning, April Shortt

2015 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

A major problem in many manufacturing facilities revolves around the need to consolidate and streamline production processes. Triumph Aerostructures’ Vought Aircraft Division is experiencing systemic functional redundancies that adversely impacts the efficiency, productivity, and bottom line of the division. An investigation of system usage across all business streams was performed where we analyzed which systems are used for which operational functions, and why these particular systems are utilized. The problem was researched using the DMADV methodology, along with other Six Sigma process analysis tools. Results showed that these problems are due to a lack of lower-level employee training on the …

The Relationships Among Loneliness, Sleep Quality, And Academic Performance In University Students, Noel Parks

2015 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among loneliness, sleep quality, and academic performance in university students to determine if sleep quality and academic performance are predictors of high levels of loneliness, which is an indicator of depression. A total of 106 students were surveyed, 10 graduate and 96 undergraduate. The UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 was used to determine perceived loneliness by having participants respond to 14 statements. An example statement was “I am part of a group of friends.” If participants answered “Always” their score for this response would be one, while a response of …

“Every Good Man Is A Quaker, And That None But Good Men Are Quakers”: Transatlantic Quaker Humanitarians, Disability, And Marketing Enlightened Reform, 1730-1834, Nathaniel Smith Kogan

History Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation explores how Quaker humanitarians in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries actively absorbed and employed emerging Enlightenment discourses about “disability” and human dependency as a means to build support for, fund, and market their reform activities. Beginning in the eighteenth century in their abolitionist advocacy, Quakers harnessed Enlightenment rhetoric about disability and public displays of aberrant bodies and minds in order to raise attention to the plight of various marginalized groups and also to raise funds to support these causes. This emerging concept of disability, which was very individualized, cohered nicely with Quakers’ central theological tenet of the “Inner …

Influencing Donor Decision-Making: An Examination Of Situational Determinants That Impact Donation, Floyd Kristopher Dec 2015

Influencing Donor Decision-Making: An Examination Of Situational Determinants That Impact Donation, Floyd Kristopher

Marketing Dissertations - Archive

Research around donor decision-making has shown the importance of understanding why donors make decisions. However, much less research exists explaining how donors make decisions. Set against the backdrop of online websites and in the context of donation, this dissertation examines how web characteristics, as situational determinants, influence donor decisions. Situational determinants are influences that arise because of a specific situation where a consumer is using the product or brand; these are instances that extend beyond the basic tendencies or traits of the consumer (Belk 1974). This could be a behavioral setting, a space, or a time (Belk 1974); other situational …

College Student Leadership Development Participation And Emotional Intelligence, Nicole Renae Portell Brown

Dissertations

Leadership development has been identified as a key college outcome (Komives, Dugan, Owen, Slack, & Wagner, 2011). Emotional intelligence as a leadership development framework has shown promise in many applications (Petrides, 2011). Able to be augmented through purposeful training and practice, high levels of emotional intelligence have been linked to job performance, healthy relationships, and emotional well-being (Joseph, Jin, Newman, & O’Boyle, 2014). This study focused on changes in emotional intelligence as a metric for personal and professional development through a state university’s leadership program. Students’ self-reported change in global and factor emotional intelligence were measured utilizing the Trait Emotional …

A Study Of The Regular Educators’ Preparedness To Educate Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Tammy Rhodes Dec 2015

A Study Of The Regular Educators’ Preparedness To Educate Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Tammy Rhodes

Dissertations

This study’s focus was on determining the level of knowledge K-5 educators have in one district regarding evidence-based practices that address the specific needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder [ASD]. The study also focused on determining what kind of inclusion task force had been established in the district, if any. Based on the findings of this study, all of the participating K-5 regular educators reported they have established a supportive culture/climate, have organized and defined work areas, use routines, regularly collect data, are flexible with curriculum, and group students based on needs. This study also revealed slightly over half …

Targeting The Weak: A Content Analysis Of Violence In Advergames, Arshak Papazyan Dec 2015

Targeting The Weak: A Content Analysis Of Violence In Advergames, Arshak Papazyan

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

With a rising trend of targeting children using various means of advertisement, the popularity of advergames has significantly increased. Although previous research suggests that negative content in advergames result in less favorable attitudes toward the game (Waiguny, et al., 2013), the presence of violence in advergames targeted to children aged three to ten years is significantly high. Despite the growing concern regarding violence in advergames and other means of advertisement targeted to children, research has not yet investigated the actual amount of violence in advergames. To shed light on this important issue, the present research discusses results of a descriptive …

The Impact Of Visual Cues And Service Behavior On The Consumer Retail Experience, Taylor Bjerk Dec 2015

The Impact Of Visual Cues And Service Behavior On The Consumer Retail Experience, Taylor Bjerk

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

With product differentiation low in the retail industry, businesses need to create strong brand images and increase customer loyalty in order to remain competitive. Visual merchandising is one tool that businesses have to communicate their message in a compelling and strategic manner. Within the scope of visual merchandising there are a number of atmospherics, or cues, which include visual, tactile, and auditory, that can be used in conjunction with one another to influence consumer behavior. Service encounters also have a strong influence on the consumer retail experience and must be managed effectively to make sure their influence is positive. All …

Meta-Analyses Of Cardiovascular Responses To Rumination : Exploring Mechanisms Linking Depression And Hostility To Cardiovascular Disease., Lorna Y. Busch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rumination intensifies and prolongs cardiovascular responses to stress. This emotion regulation strategy is characteristic of depression and hostility and may be a mechanism linking these dispositions to cardiovascular disease (CVD). The current meta-analyses investigate the magnitude of cardiovascular responses to rumination and the effectiveness of distraction in curtailing these responses. A literature search identified studies with rumination conditions and corresponding cardiovascular measures. A random effects model was applied to calculate heart rate (HR), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and systolic blood pressure (SBP) weighted effect sizes for reactivity and recovery to angry rumination, sadness rumination, and rumination on positive emotion; heart …

A Culturally-Sensitive Model Of The Development Of Child Anxiety., Jenny Marie Petrie Dec 2015

A Culturally-Sensitive Model Of The Development Of Child Anxiety., Jenny Marie Petrie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Explanatory models significantly enhance the understanding of etiological influences that place children at risk for anxiety, yet little is known about processes that promote resilient outcomes in children. While contextual factors influence risk and protective processes, cultural constructs have not been incorporated into existing models of anxiety and the role of culture remains obscure. The current study proposes a culturally sensitive model for understanding the etiological and mitigating processes underlying anxious symptoms in ethnic minority youth, and preliminarily tests basic components of the proposed model within a non-clinical community sample of 49 African American (AA) parent-child dyads who completed self-report …

Misrepresentation Of Carbohydrate For Exercise: ‘It Is Time To Bust The Myth Of Physical Inactivity And Obesity: You Cannot Outrun A Bad Diet’, Patrick B. Wilson Dec 2015

Misrepresentation Of Carbohydrate For Exercise: ‘It Is Time To Bust The Myth Of Physical Inactivity And Obesity: You Cannot Outrun A Bad Diet’, Patrick B. Wilson

Athletic Performance Research

The contention from Malhotra et al1 regarding the unimportance of carbohydrate for exercise is misguided. First, the reference they provide is an editorial2 that should not be viewed as high-quality evidence. Several oft-cited exercise studies showing benefits with high-fat diets simultaneously utilized carbohydrate restoration strategies,3 which involves “carbohydrate loading” after a high-fat diet. Thus, the evidence provided does not contradict the established belief that carbohydrate is an important fuel for endurance exercise. Second, the authors’ use of the term “carbohydrate loading” is misleading in this context. No public health organizations advocate a diet containing carbohydrate in amounts used in “carbohydrate …

Predicting Outcomes In Investment Treaty Arbitration, Susan Franck Dec 2015

Predicting Outcomes In Investment Treaty Arbitration, Susan Franck

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Crafting appropriate dispute settlement processes is challenging for any conflict-management system, particularly for politically sensitive international economic law disputes. As the United States negotiates investment treaties with Asian and European countries, the terms of dispute settlement have become contentious. There is a vigorous debate about whether investment treaty arbitration (ITA) is an appropriate dispute settlement mechanism. While some sing the praises of ITA, others offer a spirited critique. Some critics claim that ITA is biased against states, while others suggest ITA is predictable but unfair due to factors like arbitrator identity or venue. Using data from 159 final cases derived …

Rebuilding Houses, Rebuilding Ukraine: Peacebuilding Through Youth Service-Learning, Katherine Tremont Dec 2015

Rebuilding Houses, Rebuilding Ukraine: Peacebuilding Through Youth Service-Learning, Katherine Tremont

Capstone Collection

In order to successfully transform conflict in a complex situation such as Ukraine, it is critical to examine projects designed by Ukrainians themselves that support and reflect Ukrainian attitudes towards conflict and peace. Lviv Education Foundation is one such Ukrainian-run organization developing and implementing peacebuilding projects between the east and west of Ukraine. From interviews with Lviv Education Foundation personnel, this paper examines the feasibility of two important peacebuilding interventions through the lenses of positive and negative peace, basic human needs, and conflict transformation through ritual. This project finds that Lviv Education Foundation’s programs encourage peacebuilding in all three of …

Standing In The Intersection : Using Photovoice To Understand The Lived Experience Of Black Gay College Students Attending Predominantly White Postsecondary Institutions., Erica Caton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The intersection of multiple oppressed identities is characterized by the compounded effects of victimization, intimidation and continued marginalization by dominant culture groups in society. Despite a growing body of knowledge about the individual experiences of racial and sexual minorities, there remains a lack of understanding of the unique life experiences of individuals with intersecting oppressed identities, specifically Black gay youth. Failure or inability to recognize, understand and take action in response to the needs of Black gay youth in college, perpetuates a culture of oppression that compromises the physical and mental well-being, and the academic success of these students. Engaging …

Differences In The Impact Of A Healthy Relationship Intervention On Family Cohesion, Parent-Child Relationship And Child Well-Being By Intimate Partner Violence Relationship Type., Erin E. Ness Roberts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) between the parents of children living at home has shown to have a profound effect on learning outcomes, developmental milestones, pediatric development, future mental health and overall physical safety and wellbeing (Anda, Block & Felitti, 2003). Although much research has been done on outcomes of child-witnesses and parenting in IPV relationships, some evidence suggests (Kernsmith, 2006) that the role of family dynamics among parents, as part of the IPV dynamic, is a critical variable. Other researchers (Johnson, 1995; Graham-Kevan & Archer, 2003) have theorized that violence with a high degree of controlling behaviors, often called Coercive …

Christian Chicken Vs. Mainstream Media: A Case Study Analysis Of Chick-Fil-A’S Stance On Traditional Marriage Using Situational Crisis Communication Theory, Christiannn Mcnew

Masters Theses

A crisis can strike an organization at any moment and it is the responsibility of the organization to be prepared with a plan of action. This thesis will explore crisis management, using Timothy Coombs’ crisis management strategies, of Chick-fil-A and then COO Dan Cathy to see if those two parties implemented crisis strategies in a way that benefited the organization following Cathy’s statements in support of the biblical definition of family. Since many interpreted these comments as anti-gay sentiments from Chick-fil-A itself, crisis struck the organization Cathy represented. This thesis will also look at the idea of social activism in …

“Whimsy Little Contracts” With Unexpected Consequences: An Empirical Analysis Of Consumer Understanding Of Arbitration Agreements, Jeff Sovern, Elayne E. Greenberg, Paul F. Kirgis, Yuxiang Liu Dec 2015

“Whimsy Little Contracts” With Unexpected Consequences: An Empirical Analysis Of Consumer Understanding Of Arbitration Agreements, Jeff Sovern, Elayne E. Greenberg, Paul F. Kirgis, Yuxiang Liu

Maryland Law Review

Arbitration clauses have become ubiquitous in consumer contracts. These arbitration clauses require consumers to waive the constitutional right to a civil jury, access to court, and, increasingly, the procedural remedy of class representation. Because those rights cannot be divested without consent, the validity of arbitration agreements rests on the premise of consent. Consumers who do not want to arbitrate or waive their class rights can simply decline to purchase the products or services covered by an arbitration agreement. But the premise of consent is undermined if consumers do not understand the effect on their procedural rights of clicking a box …

Conflict Between Paternalism And Autonomy., Amber Hussain Sayani Dec 2015

Conflict Between Paternalism And Autonomy., Amber Hussain Sayani

School of Nursing & Midwifery

In the past, paternalism played an important role in making decisions at the end of life. However, in the modern era its significance has become unpopular as it require physicians to decide what is good or bad for the patient without considering patients wish and interest. This commentary article is based on a case study of a woman whose life was lost due to complications of pregnancy. The paper critically reviews this case study, and attempts to provide a reasonable and systematic framework to make sound decisions in similar cases.

The Extent Of Autism Knowledge Of Novice Alternatively Certified Special Education Teachers In Texas, Jennifer Alward Hauber, Smita Shukla Mehta, Bertina H. Combes Dec 2015

The Extent Of Autism Knowledge Of Novice Alternatively Certified Special Education Teachers In Texas, Jennifer Alward Hauber, Smita Shukla Mehta, Bertina H. Combes

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

An increase in the prevalence rate of autism is not necessarily matched by a concurrent increase in the rate of highly qualified special education teachers, resulting in chronic teacher shortages in this area. Alternative certification (AC) is used as a mechanism to alleviate the demand for highly qualified special education teachers. However, AC routes have often left novice teachers underprepared for teaching students with autism, more specifically in the implementation of evidence-based practices necessary for instructional effectiveness. The purpose of the study was to assess the knowledge of novice AC teachers in the area of autism intervention and to determine …

A Teacher’S Use Of Video To Train Paraprofessionals In Pivotal Response Techniques, Adria Murphy, Suzanne E. Robinson, Debra L. Cote, Belinda D. Karge, Trissie Lee Dec 2015

A Teacher’S Use Of Video To Train Paraprofessionals In Pivotal Response Techniques, Adria Murphy, Suzanne E. Robinson, Debra L. Cote, Belinda D. Karge, Trissie Lee

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

Research has shown that students with moderate-severe disabilities need direct and frequent social instruction in order to communicate and play with their peers. At the same time, there is little commensurate support for the paraprofessionals tasked with providing this support. It is imperative, then, that paraprofessionals have effective strategies in their repertoire of practices to facilitate social interaction. This investigation examined one classroom teacher's use of video to train two paraprofessionals in Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), an evidence based practice for students with autism. Findings suggest that the teacher-provided video training was effective in improving paraprofessionals’ PRT implementation, and subsequently, …

High-Preference Strategies And Other Interspersal Procedures For Learners With Disabilities: A Review Of The Literature, Elias Clinton, Tom J. Clees Dec 2015

High-Preference Strategies And Other Interspersal Procedures For Learners With Disabilities: A Review Of The Literature, Elias Clinton, Tom J. Clees

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

Interspersal Procedures (IP) represent a group of interventions that imbed, at varying ratios, requests for individuals to exhibit mastered skills before or within sequences of requests for target skills. Interspersal Procedures include numerous strategies, such as high-probability request sequences, pre-task requests, and high-preference strategies. Such arrangements can increase attempts to perform target or less preferred tasks. The purposes of this review include (a) an overview of terminology related to IP, (b) a discussion of the conceptual basis for using IP, (c) a description of the experimental literature that has used IP with individuals with disabilities, (d) a categorical summary of …
