Residents of pollution hotspots often take on projects in ‘citizen science’, or popularepidemiology, in an effort to marshal the data that can prove their experience of the pollution to the relevant authorities. Sometimes these tactics, such as pollution logs or bucket brigades, take advantage of residents’ spatially ordered and finely honed experiential and sensory knowledge of the places they inhabit. But putting that knowledge into conversation with law requires them to mobilize a new, ‘foreign’ set of tools, primarily oriented to the observation, measurement and sampling of pollution according to conventional scientific standards. Here, I employ qualitative empirical methods in …
Functional Movement Screen Score By Somatotype Category, Amanda Kelch
Functional Movement Screen Score By Somatotype Category, Amanda Kelch
Masters Theses
Background: The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a tool used by fitness and health professionals to assess the quality of movement patterns in active populations. The literature has established descriptive values for FMS scores in various populations. However there has not yet been a study establishing the descriptive values of FMS score based on the somatotype categories. Establishing these descriptive values may provide a better understanding of how an individual's somatotype affects their ability to move. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish FMS scores for the four simplified somatotype categories (normal, endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph). Methods: Participants …

Developing An Algal Biofilm Filtration System For The Remediation Of Nutrient Pollution In Freshwater Ponds, Danielle Delp
Developing An Algal Biofilm Filtration System For The Remediation Of Nutrient Pollution In Freshwater Ponds, Danielle Delp
Theses
Anthropogenic nutrient pollution is one of the most serious threats facing aquatic systems in modern times. Pollution with compounds containing nitrogen and phosphorous encourages rapid development of autotrophic biomass, or blooms, that severely degrade the quality of an aquatic system both as a habitat for organisms and as a water resource for human use. In freshwater ponds, the widespread need for treatment of nutrient pollution and resulting blooms has resulted in the growth of a large industry dedicated to pond management and maintenance. These companies utilize a variety of chemical and non-chemical treatments to prevent the growth of blooms or …
Monitoring Cloud-Prone Complex Landscapes At Multiple Spatial Scales Using Medium And High Resolution Optical Data: A Case Study In Central Africa, Bikash Basnet
Theses
Tracking land surface dynamics over cloud-prone areas with complex mountainous terrain and a landscape that is heterogeneous at a scale of approximately 10 m, is an important challenge in the remote sensing of tropical regions in developing nations, due to the small plot sizes. Persistent monitoring of natural resources in these regions at multiple spatial scales requires development of tools to identify emerging land cover transformation due to anthropogenic causes, such as agricultural expansion and climate change. Along with the cloud cover and obstructions by topographic distortions due to steep terrain, there are limitations to the accuracy of monitoring change …

The Art Traveler: Building A User Experience System To Discover Art, Yue Liu
Theses
With the increasing popularity of mobile devices and their apps, mobile technologies have changed the nature of travel significantly. With numerous travel apps available today, many tourists can become confused with which one to select and use. Another important factor is that a majority of travel applications are designed for everyone traveling everywhere, not specifically for one kind of tourist and one subject matter. The goal of this thesis is to create an effective and efficient user experience system.
The project is a travel planner for people to pursue an art tour of their own interest. It focuses on designing …
Coarse Bedload Routing And Dispersion Through Tributary Confluences, Kurt Imhoff, Andrew C. Wilcox
Coarse Bedload Routing And Dispersion Through Tributary Confluences, Kurt Imhoff, Andrew C. Wilcox
Geosciences Faculty Publications
Sediment routing fundamentally influences channel morphology and propagation of disturbances. However, the transport and storage of bedload particles in headwater channel confluences, which may be significant nodes of the channel network in terms of sediment routing, morphology, and habitat, is poorly understood. To characterize routing processes through confluences of headwater channels, we investigate how sediment routing patterns through headwater confluences compare to those described in low-gradient gravel bed river systems, and how confluences affect the dispersive behavior of coarse bedload particles compared to non-confluence reaches. We address these questions with a field tracer experiment using passive-integrated transponder and radio-frequency identification …

Development And Preliminary Evaluation Of A Spray Deposition Sensing System For Improving Pesticide Application, Melissa A. Kesterson, Joe D. Luck, Michael P. Sama
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
An electronic, resistance-based sensor array and data acquisition system was developed to measure spray deposition from hydraulic nozzles. The sensor surface consisted of several parallel tin plated copper traces of varying widths with varying gap widths. The system contained an embedded microprocessor to monitor output voltage corresponding to spray deposition every second. In addition, a wireless module was used to transmit the voltage values to a remote laptop. Tests were conducted in two stages to evaluate the performance of the sensor array in an attempt to quantify the spray deposition. Initial tests utilized manual droplet placement on the sensor surface …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Epibenthic Community And Food Web Structures In The Chukchi Sea Between 2004-2012, Carlos Serratos
Marine Biology
The Chukchi Sea shelf, an area undergoing rapid environmental change and concurrently increasing human activity, supports communities of epibenthic organisms and food webs that are sustained by high primary productivity in the overlying water column and are influenced by physical environmental conditions. The goal of this study was to characterize these epibenthic communities (using trawl hauls) and benthic food webs (using carbon and nitrogen stables isotopes) in 2009 and 2012 and to identify persisting or changing patterns between 2004, 2009 and 2012 as part of NOAA's Russian-American long-term Census of the Arctic (RUSALCA) program. Fifteen stations each were sampled in …
From Boolean Equalities To Constraints, Sergio Antoy, Michael Hanus
From Boolean Equalities To Constraints, Sergio Antoy, Michael Hanus
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although functional as well as logic languages use equality to discriminate between logically different cases, the operational meaning of equality is different in such languages. Functional languages reduce equational expressions to their Boolean values, True or False, logic languages use unification to check the validity only and fail otherwise. Consequently, the language Curry, which amalgamates functional and logic programming features, offers two kinds of equational expressions so that the programmer has to distinguish between these uses. We show that this distinction can be avoided by providing an analysis and transformation method that automatically selects the appropriate operation. Without this distinction …

INTRODUCTION
On 25 April 2015, the Gorkha earthquake [magnitude (M) 7.8] struck Nepal, followed by five aftershocks of ≥M 6.0 until 10 June 2015. The earthquakes killed ~9000 people and severely damaged a 550 by 200 km region in Nepal and neighboring countries. Some mountain villages were completely destroyed, and the remote locations, blocked roads, and landslide-dammed rivers prevented ground access to many areas.RATIONALE
Our “Volunteer Group” of scientists from nine nations, motivated by humanitarian needs, focused on satellite-based systematic mapping and analysis of earthquake-induced geohazards. We provided information to relief and recovery officials as emergency …Setting The Kids' Table, Elizabeth Fiske

"I Don't Think Of All The Misery, But Of The Beauty That Still Remains": Holocaust Education In The Music Classroom, Kathryn Eileen Stiadle
Honors Theses
On June 26, 2014, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett signed a law requiring mandatory Holocaust and Genocide education in all Pennsylvania schools. This legislation, the result of efforts made by Holocaust author and advocated Rhonda Fink-Whitman, made Pennsylvania the sixth state to require Holocaust and Genocide education. However, the law does not state how to teach about this rather difficult topic. According to anthropologist and ethnomusicologist Alan Merriam, one of the functions of music in any society is "emotional expression." Because music gives us the ability to convey emotions in a way that speech perhaps cannot, it is a beneficial tool …

A Comparison Of High-Intensity Power Training And Graded Treadmill Exercise, Eric Peter Sparks
A Comparison Of High-Intensity Power Training And Graded Treadmill Exercise, Eric Peter Sparks
Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to investigate acute blood lactate concentration, heart rate, blood pressure, and rating of perceived exertion following two different types of exercise: a high intensity power training exercise test and a graded treadmill exercise test. The hypothesis was that the HIPT exercise test would yield higher levels of blood lactate, heart rate, blood pressure, and RPE, immediately post exercise when compared to a graded treadmill exercise test. Ten college-aged participants with a body mass index /m2, blood pressure <140/90 mmHg, no overt cardiovascular disease, no cardiovascular medications, and no use of tobacco products were included in the study. All participants had a general fitness and training level that allowed them to perform the exercise bouts without any hesitation. Subjects participated in two exercise sessions on separate occasions. A graded treadmill exercise test occurred with the subjects walking on the treadmill until the self-stated desire to stop or until five stages of increased speed and intensity had occurred. In the second meeting, subjects completed a prescribed high-intensity power training exercise test. Heart rate (HR), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), blood pressure (BP), and blood lactate concentration were all obtained before and immediately following each training session, as well as immediately following each stage of the graded treadmill exercise test. Oxygen uptake was obtained during the graded treadmill exercise test. After both tests were conducted, the high intensity power training exercise test showed a higher percentage of blood lactate concentration at its conclusion when compared to the graded treadmill exercise test with lower final average values BP, HR and RPE. In conclusion HIPT exercise yields higher blood lactate concentrations compared to graded treadmill exercise with a lower blood pressure, heart rate, and perceived exertion.
Influence Of Physical And Biological Oceanography On The Structure Of The Seabird Community In The Northeastern Chukchi Sea, Adrian E. Gall
Influence Of Physical And Biological Oceanography On The Structure Of The Seabird Community In The Northeastern Chukchi Sea, Adrian E. Gall
Marine Biology
The Chukchi Sea is losing seasonal ice cover as global temperatures rise, facilitating human access to the region for activities such as oil and gas exploration, shipping, and tourism. Processes and responses to environmental change by marine ecosystems are often challenging to quantify because they are hidden under water. Seabirds, however, offer visible evidence of the health and status of marine ecosystems. I studied the community structure, variability in abundance and distribution, and habitat associations of seabirds in the eastern Chukchi Sea. My results provide insights into the influence of climate change on seabirds and a benchmark against which to …
Investigating Marine Particle Distributions And Processes Using In Situ Optical Imaging In The Gulf Of Alaska, Jessica S. Turner
Investigating Marine Particle Distributions And Processes Using In Situ Optical Imaging In The Gulf Of Alaska, Jessica S. Turner
Marine Biology
The Gulf of Alaska is a seasonally productive ecosystem surrounded by glaciated coastal mountains with high precipitation. With a combination of high biological production, inputs of suspended sediments from glacial runoff, and contrasting nutrient regimes in offshore and shelf environments, there is a great need to study particle cycling in this region. I measured the concentrations and size distributions of large marine particles (0.06-27 mm) during four cruises in 2014 and 2015 using the Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP). The UVP produces high resolution depth profiles of particle concentrations and size distributions throughout the water column, while generating individual images of …
Trophic Pathways Supporting Juvenile Chinook And Coho Salmon In The Glacial Susitna River, Alaska: Patterns Of Freshwater, Terrestrial, And Marine Resource Use Across A Seasonally Dynamic Habitat Mosaic, Kristin M. Rine
Biological Sciences
In large, seasonally dynamic and spatially complex watersheds, the availability and relative importance of various food resources for stream fishes can be expected to vary substantially. While numerous studies have attempted to uncover the trophic linkages that support stream salmonids, much of these efforts have occurred at small scales that disregard variability of food resources inherent in lotic systems. This study aimed to determine large-scale patterns in the contributions of freshwater, terrestrial, and marine-derived food resources to juvenile Chinook and Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and O. kisutch) in the large, glacially influenced Susitna River, Alaska. I quantified diet patterns both …

Spectroscopy Of Quasibound And Long-Range Rydberg States Of Ultracold 85rb2, Ryan A. Carollo
Doctoral Dissertations
Ultracold atomic physics offers an experimentalist the opportunity to perform sensitive tests and measurements that are not possible at higher temperatures. In this case it allows for access to molecular states, through photoassociation, that are inaccessible to conventional techniques. We use photoassociation to measure quasi-bound levels of the 2 1Σg+ state of 85Rb2 . With these data, we examine a coupling between the short-range Hund’s case (c) 2 (0g+ ) component and the long-range 2 (1g ) state, which corresponds to the 1 1Πg state. A second experiment studies the …
Enhancing Upper-Level Performance From Below: Performance Measurement And Optimization In Lte Networks, Ruofan Jin
Enhancing Upper-Level Performance From Below: Performance Measurement And Optimization In Lte Networks, Ruofan Jin
Doctoral Dissertations
The current 4G LTE cellular networks provide significantly higher data rate and lower network latency than earlier generation systems. The advances provided by LTE, however, may not be fully utilized by upper-level protocols and applications. In this dissertation, we first investigate the predictability of link bandwidth in cellular networks. We then design and implement a new transport protocol that utilizes the link bandwidth prediction framework. Last, we design and implement a control-theoretic approach for adaptive video streaming for cellular networks.
For cellular link bandwidth prediction, we conduct an extensive measurement study in major US commercial LTE networks and identify various …

An Examination Of The Factors And Characteristics That Contribute To The Success Of Putnam Fellows, Robert A. J. Stroud
Doctoral Dissertations
The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is an intercollegiate mathematics competition for undergraduate college and university students in the United States and Canada and is regarded as the most prestigious and challenging mathematics competition in North America (Alexanderson, 2004; Grossman, 2002; Reznick, 1994; Schoenfeld, 1985). Students who earn the five highest scores on the examination are named Putnam Fellows and to date, despite the thousands of students who have taken the Putnam Examination, only 280 individuals have won the Putnam Competition. Clearly, based on their performance being named a Putnam Fellow is a remarkable achievement. In addition, Putnam Fellows go …
Using Self-Organizing Maps To Detail Synoptic Connections Between Climate Indices And Alaska Weather, Reynir C. Winnan
Using Self-Organizing Maps To Detail Synoptic Connections Between Climate Indices And Alaska Weather, Reynir C. Winnan
Atmospheric Sciences
Seasonal forecasts for Alaska strongly depend on the phases of Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and warm water in the North Pacific called the North Pacific Mode or more popularly the "Pacific blob." The canonical descriptions of these climate indices are based on seasonal averages, and anomalies that are based on a long-term mean. The patterns highlight general geographical placement and display a sharp contrast between opposing phases, but this may be misleading since seasonal averages hide much of the synoptic variability. Self-organizing maps (SOMs) are a way of grouping daily sea level pressure (SLP) patterns, over …

Non-Invasive Methods For Obtaining Occupancy Probabilities And Density Estimates Of Interior Alaska's Mesocarnivore Populations, Casey Pozzanghera
Biological Sciences
Mesocarnivore species worldwide have been shown to be significant drivers of ecological communities. Changes in their abundance and distributions are known to cause cascading effects throughout ecosystems, and changes to the landscape and climate will likely lead to shifts in mesocarnivore population sizes and distributions. However, the current status of these species in some of the world's most susceptible landscapes is not known. I assessed the impacts of abiotic factors on the distributional patterns and abundance of boreal mesocarnivores and evaluated methods commonly used to estimate density and occupancy. I conducted non-invasive winter surveys of coyotes (Canis latrans), red foxes …
