Comparison Of Lower Body Segment Alignment Of Elite Level Hockey Players To Age-Matched Non-Hockey Players, Jim R. Kimbal
Comparison Of Lower Body Segment Alignment Of Elite Level Hockey Players To Age-Matched Non-Hockey Players, Jim R. Kimbal
Biological Sciences
Lower body overuse and insidious onset injuries are thought to have an underlying biomechanical component which may be predisposing to injury. The purpose of this study was to compare lower body biomechanical characteristics for elite hockey players to matched controls. I hypothesize that elite hockey players have a greater degree of anterior pelvic tilt, greater varus knee angle, a higher foot arch and feet held in parallel more during gait than a matched non-skating population. Measures were taken of elite level, college aged, male hockey players and compared to cross country runners (ten subjects in each group) who served as …

Studies In The History Of Anthropology In The United States, Jay H. Bernstein
Publications and Research
I will talk about a study I did on the first persons to do Ph.D.s in anthropology and how the project led to my leaving the anthropology profession and becoming a librarian. The project began in a biographical study of a little-known anthropologist that involved archival work. As a librarian who has left the profession of anthropology (not without trauma), I remain keenly interested in the history and bibliography of anthropology and view dissertation projects as crucial to understanding the biographies of scholars and trends in academic professions.
Handheld Stand-Alone Microfluidics Compatible Field Use Fluorimeter For Analyzing The Concentration Of Analytes In A Sample, Matthew B. Anctil
Handheld Stand-Alone Microfluidics Compatible Field Use Fluorimeter For Analyzing The Concentration Of Analytes In A Sample, Matthew B. Anctil
Engineering
This thesis presents the work performed to produce a handheld fluorometric tool for the analysis of microfluidics lab chips. The first section of this thesis describes the methods used for the design and development of this fluorometric tool. Each of the major components was tested individually to determine how effectively it would perform under different circumstances and configurations. Compensations were made for the weaknesses identified in each of the major components. The second section describes the laboratory testing of the developed photofluorimeter. Initial testing was carried out using a photo fluorescent tracer dye known as fluorescein sodium salt. Additional testing …
Uncertainty Quantification Of Gas Production In The Barnett Shale Using Time Series Analysis, Kishan Ghanshyambhai Joshi
Uncertainty Quantification Of Gas Production In The Barnett Shale Using Time Series Analysis, Kishan Ghanshyambhai Joshi
Engineering
Deterministic methods for evaluating uncertainty in production forecasts for unconventional shale plays are either unreliable or time intensive. This thesis presents an improved methodology for quantifying uncertainty in production forecasts using Logistic Growth Analysis (LGA) and time series modeling. The applicability of the proposed method is tested by history matching production data and providing uncertainty bounds for forecasts from eight Barnett Shale counties. The 80% confidence interval (CI) generated by this method successfully bracketed true production values for all the counties, even when approximately one-third of the data was used for history matching. In the methodology presented, the trend in …
Understanding Reservoir Engineering Aspects Of Shale Gas Development On The Alaska North Slope, Anna Nyulund
Understanding Reservoir Engineering Aspects Of Shale Gas Development On The Alaska North Slope, Anna Nyulund
Engineering
Horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing made it possible to develop US shale resources. Shublik shale is one of such US shale resources - it is one of the largest source rocks for hydrocarbon accumulations located on the Alaska North Slope. This study used the workflow introduced by Mirzaei and Cipolla in 2012 to investigate the effects of fracturing fluid flowback; shale porosity; matrix, fracture and unpropped zone permeability; hydraulic fracture spacing; permeability anisotropy; non-Darcy flow; gas adsorption/desorption using the complex-fracture-network model, referred to as an Unconventional Fracture Model (UFM), and Voronoi grid on well performance in the Shublik shale …
Studies On Thermophysical Properties Of Nanofluids And Their Application In Ground Source Heat Pump, Jagannadha Reddy Satti
Studies On Thermophysical Properties Of Nanofluids And Their Application In Ground Source Heat Pump, Jagannadha Reddy Satti
Engineering
The goals of this dissertation were to measure the thermal conductivity, specific heat, and density of different propylene glycol nanofluids; compare the results with existing correlations; and develop new correlations with the obtained data. A numerical study has been performed to study the benefits of nanofluids in cold climate ground source heat pumps. Nanofluids are dispersions of nanoparticles with average sizes of less than 100 nm in heat transfer fluids such as water, oil, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol. In cold regions, the common heat transfer fluids used are ethylene glycol (EG) and propylene glycol (PG). In the present research, …

Alaska’s economy is strongly tied to oil production, with most of the petroleum coming from the Prudhoe Bay oil fields. Deadhorse, the furthest north oil town on the Alaska North Slope, provides support to the oil industry. The Dalton Highway is the only road that connects Deadhorse with other cities in Interior Alaska. The road is heavily used to move supplies to and from the oil fields. In late March and early April 2015, the Dalton Highway near Deadhorse was affected by ice and winter overflow from the Sagavanirktok River, which caused the road’s closure two times, for a total …

War Machine: Media And Technology During Operation Allied Force, N Bobic
War Machine: Media And Technology During Operation Allied Force, N Bobic
School of Art, Design and Architecture
One significant aspect of military interventions is that violence in binary geographies, which have an implied colonial discourse (such as Serbia), often involve the dialectics of construction and erasure, meaning that absence and presence of destruction and violence run side by side. This paper investigates the ways that technology and media were instrumentalised in miniaturising evidence and reducing the visibility of destruction during NATO’s Operation Allied Force in Serbia and Kosovo. While the dominant NATO rhetoric behind the intervention was “humanitarian” with the Operation being deployed in the name of Western values and civilisation, this text puts forward an alternative …

Maternal Predictors Of School Readiness Among At-Risk Head Start Preschool Children, Rachel Chase
Maternal Predictors Of School Readiness Among At-Risk Head Start Preschool Children, Rachel Chase
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Preschool has been identified as a critical period during which children who are at-risk for school difficulties are most responsive to intervention (National Institute of Mental Health, 2002; National Research Council & Institute of Medicine, 2001). Because of this, school readiness has recently become a prioritized area of interest for the educational system, the health care industry, and the federal government. However, many efforts to comprehensively prepare a child to begin school have not been successful because factors beyond the educational system (e.g., parenting/parent attributes, environmental stressors, and other demographic characteristics) have not been closely considered nor adequately researched. Therefore, …
Sound And Human Impacts On Beluga Whales In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Rachael E. Blevins
Sound And Human Impacts On Beluga Whales In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Rachael E. Blevins
Fisheries
Cook Inlet beluga whales (CIBs) are a geographically and genetically isolated population residing in Cook Inlet, Alaska year round. The population declined by approximately 50% between 1994 and 1998 and was listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 2008. The original decline was attributed to overharvest; however, the population has failed to rebound despite the virtual absence of harvest since 1998. This suggests that other factors, such as declining prey availability, increased predation, contaminants, disease, climate change, catastrophic events, habitat loss, unauthorized take, and underwater noise pollution, may be limiting the population's recovery. The goal of this dissertation …

The Ecological Importance Of Brachiopods Versus Bivalves In The Paleozoic: Taphonomy, Biomass, And Energy Use, Shannon (Shin-Nan) Hsieh
The Ecological Importance Of Brachiopods Versus Bivalves In The Paleozoic: Taphonomy, Biomass, And Energy Use, Shannon (Shin-Nan) Hsieh
Master's Theses
Brachiopods have commonly been considered more important than bivalves in Paleozoic ecosystems due to their greater global diversity and greater abundance in many fossil assemblages. New sampling-standardized diversity curves verify that brachiopods were more diverse than bivalves at the global level in the Paleozoic; they declined in the Permian-Triassic extinction, largely recovered, then faded away later in the Mesozoic. However, the subordinate ecological status of bivalves within local Paleozoic ecosystems has been challenged on two fronts. First, bivalve abundance may be underestimated due to preferential dissolution of aragonitic shells. Second, bivalve contribution to ecosystem function may be underestimated by abundance …
Predictors Of Improvement In Risk Reduction Skills Among Hiv Infected Drug Users, Rashmi Dahal
Predictors Of Improvement In Risk Reduction Skills Among Hiv Infected Drug Users, Rashmi Dahal
Master's Theses
Background and Objective: Unsafe needle use and unprotected sex are behaviors that have been associated with HIV transmission. Evidence-based behavioral intervention approaches are widely available for preventing HIV transmission, but neurocognitive impairment (NCI) may impede many intervention participants’ capacity to fully benefit from such interventions, leaving them vulnerable to HIV transmission risk. This study examines the impact of NCI on specific intervention outcomes expected to be enhanced through intervention participation.
Methods: Participants were 74 HIV+ opioid-dependent persons participating in methadone maintenance drug treatment and who reported drug- or sex- related HIV risk behavior. Using regression analyses, NCI, HIV knowledge (information), …

Brandishing The Cybered Bear: Information War And The Russia-Ukraine Conflict, Azhar Unwala, Shaheen Ghori
Military Cyber Affairs
Russia’s use of cyber power against Ukraine offered renewed insight to Russian cyber strategy and capabilities. This article dissects the Russia-Ukraine conflict by analyzing Russia’s strategic doctrine, tactical maneuvers, and capabilities in the information realm. Understanding the Russia-Ukraine conflict in this manner can inform and strengthen U.S. cyber policy and strategy. In particular, U.S. strategic planners and cyber professionals should consider internalizing Russian strategic thinking regarding cyber power and promote tactical improvements in resilience, intelligence, and information among itself and its allies.
Data To Decisions For Cyberspace Operations, Steve Stone
Data To Decisions For Cyberspace Operations, Steve Stone
Military Cyber Affairs
In 2011, the United States (U.S.) Department of Defense (DOD) named cyberspace a new operational domain. The U.S. Cyber Command and the Military Services are working to make the cyberspace environment a suitable place for achieving national objectives and enabling military command and control (C2). To effectively conduct cyberspace operations, DOD requires data and analysis of the Mission, Network, and Adversary. However, the DOD’s current data processing and analysis capabilities do not meet mission needs within critical operational timelines. This paper presents a summary of the data processing and analytics necessary to effectively conduct cyberspace operations.

Modern automated control systems leverage significantly different and disparate data sets for modeling and decision-making. Yet, dynamic human presence detection and identification is not widely used in these systems despite the enriching effect such information would have. We behave in unpredictable ways and are not easily identifiable by computers. This paper outlines a method for reliably and passively detecting presence of a person and identifying that person by exploiting existing ubiquitous infrastructure: Wi-Fi networks and that persons Wi-Fi enabled smartphone without installing any additional software. We further enumerate several applications ranging from home security to energy efficiencies. We explore the …
Cyberspace Operations Planning: Operating A Technical Military Force Beyond The Kinetic Domains, Don E. Barber, T. Alan Bobo, Kevin P. Sturm
Cyberspace Operations Planning: Operating A Technical Military Force Beyond The Kinetic Domains, Don E. Barber, T. Alan Bobo, Kevin P. Sturm
Military Cyber Affairs
Cyber operations can be very complex, and it is useful to conceptualize a deeper, fourth technical level of warfare in order to conduct effective planning. The technical details associated with cyberspace operations are not grasped as intuitively by planners and commanders as are the capabilities and limitations of tanks, ships, and aircraft. The complex and dynamic nature of cyberspace often drives technical analysis and planning to a level beyond those planning practices and procedures accommodated by traditional Joint doctrine.
Using A Disciplinary Literacy Framework To Teach High School Physics: An Action Research Study, Brian P. Hurley, Michael P. Henry
Using A Disciplinary Literacy Framework To Teach High School Physics: An Action Research Study, Brian P. Hurley, Michael P. Henry
i.e.: inquiry in education
This action research study investigated the impact of teaching physics using a disciplinary literacy framework for instruction across all units in one academic year. Through a suite of vocabulary strategies and lessons that encourage students to write, speak, draw, mathematically translate, and design experiments, students learn to do physics by approximating problems and tasks like physicists. The data from this study suggests that students who exhibit these physicist-like disciplinary literacy behaviors may perform better on math-based assessments so long as they employ disciplinary literacy strategies while problem solving. By teaching via a disciplinary literacy framework, the classroom may become more …

Growing Pains: Reflections At The Intersection(S) Of Pedagogy And Self-Study In Whiteness Research In Education, Jane S. Joyner, Zachary A. Casey
i.e.: inquiry in education
In this paper we work to place personal reflections of ourselves as researchers in conversation with interview data generated from white practicing teachers. Our work seeks to engage what the praxis of pedagogical qualitative analysis, coupled with self-study, can offer other researchers. This paper thus has two primary aims: to investigate our research findings from the interview data and the teachers who participated in the professional development seminar, and to explore what such work makes available to us as white researcher/practitioners. We move back and forth between both in the pages that follow, as we hope to showcase what becomes …

Help? Not If You Don’T Know What To Look For: Applying Social Cognitive Theory To Program Evaluation In Competitive Forensics, Audra R. Diers
Speaker & Gavel
Jessica Furgerson offered an important call to action by arguing Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives should be applied as a way to evaluate research skill acquisition in forensics participation. I have used her analysis as a way to show that more than just understanding what we do (and should do) in forensics, we should use theory to guide team goal-setting and program evaluation. In addition, I have argued forensics program administrators should establish theory-based program evaluation using Bandura’s social cognitive theory to demonstrate the value forensics offers to the overall university education mission.

I Need Help Finding It: Understanding The Benefits Of Research Skill Acquisition In Competitive Forensics, Jessica L. Furgerson
Speaker & Gavel
Research skill acquisition is an invaluable but under explored benefit of forensics participation. Although coaches, students, and administrators acknowledge that participants gain research skills via forensics, little is known about what these skills are and how they specifically benefit students. This paper isolates three specific research dimensions students learn while participating in competitive speech and debate: locating, examining, and applying source mate-rial. Connections are then drawn between these dimensions and the attainment of high level learning resulting in the creation of educational outcomes related to research skill acquisition via forensics. Understanding the process and importance of research skill acquisition is …

Obama Transforming: Using Functional Theory To Identify Transformational Leadership, Kristina Drumheller, Greg G. Armfield
Speaker & Gavel
The 2008 presidential campaign convention speeches broke records as viewers flocked to the speeches by Obama, Palin, and McCain in numbers that rivaled American Idol ratings. Adapting functional theory (Benoit, 2007) to include transformational leadership characteristics (Bass & Avolio, 1990), President Obama‘s 2008 nomination acceptance speech was used test the adapting of functional theory for analyzing leadership claims. Secondary data were used as evidentiary support of Obama‘s efforts to make changes once in the White House. Results are discussed and framed within functional theory and transfor-mational leadership.
