Mhealth Risk Screening In Urban Primary Care, Martha R. Staeheli Dec 2015

Mhealth Risk Screening In Urban Primary Care, Martha R. Staeheli

Doctoral Dissertations

Background: Urban, underserved populations experience considerable disparities in the screening, prevention, and treatment of chronic disease, including behavioral health disorders. Screening patients for such problems is widely recommended, yet is challenging to do in a brief primary care encounter, particularly for this complex patient population. Electronic risk screening provides one method of eliminating disparities in the identification of risks, while limiting burden on providers.

Objectives: 1) Screening data were compared to EHR data to assess differences in the prevalence of 12 risk factors and clustering of risks; 2) Patients screening positive for behavioral health problems were followed to determine rates …

A Deeper Semiotic Richness: Empowering English Language Students Through Digital Storytelling, Karah Parks Dec 2015

A Deeper Semiotic Richness: Empowering English Language Students Through Digital Storytelling, Karah Parks

Master's Projects and Capstones

The current philosophies underpinning TESOL higher education curricula and classroom practices still reinforce the essentialized narrative of the native speaker and teach English as an objective, disinterested, linguistic system of static signs (Blommaert, 2010; Kramsch, 2009; Larsen-Freeman, 2015; Pennycook, 1997). This has significantly limited the development students’ identities, and agency within English language speaking communities. To address this issue, this project contains a supplemental, online digital storytelling curriculum for intermediate to advanced adult learners at the university level in U.S. colleges as a means of scaffolding intentional identity development through multimodal, symbolic competence in the English language. Entitled Creative ESOL: …

Stopover Ecology Of Semipalmated Sandpipers (Calidris Pusilla) At Coastal Deltas Of The Beaufort Sea, Alaska, Roy Thomas Churchwell Dec 2015

Stopover Ecology Of Semipalmated Sandpipers (Calidris Pusilla) At Coastal Deltas Of The Beaufort Sea, Alaska, Roy Thomas Churchwell

Biological Sciences

Avian migration is one of the wonders of the natural world. Stored fats are the main source of nutrients and fuel for avian migration and it is assumed the fat deposition at stopover sites is a critical component of a successful migration. Stopover sites are crucial in the successful migration of many birds, but particularly for arctic-breeding shorebirds that migrate long distances from breeding to wintering grounds. Despite the importance of stopover sites, it is often difficult to determine the importance of these sites to migrating shorebirds. I investigated three aspects of stopover ecology of Semipalmated Sandpipers (Calidris pusilla) foraging …

Direct And Indirect Effects Of Wolves On Interior Alaska's Mesopredator Community, Kelly J. Sivy Dec 2015

Direct And Indirect Effects Of Wolves On Interior Alaska's Mesopredator Community, Kelly J. Sivy

Biological Sciences

Large carnivores may indirectly benefit small predators by suppressing competitively dominant mesopredators. However, our current understanding of interactions within the carnivore guild does not account for carrion subsidies provided by large carnivores, which could facilitate mesopredators during times of prey scarcity. This could be particularly relevant in northern ecosystems characterized by long harsh winters and decadal prey cycling. In Alaska, state-sponsored wolf (Canis lupus) control programs reduce wolf populations by as much as 50-80% across 8 game management units that collectively total over 165,000 km2, yet the impact of this practice on the Alaska's diverse mesopredator community remains unknown. We …

Bridging Arctic Pathways: Integrating Hydrology, Geomorphology And Remote Sensing In The North, Erin Dawn Trochim Dec 2015

Bridging Arctic Pathways: Integrating Hydrology, Geomorphology And Remote Sensing In The North, Erin Dawn Trochim

Geosciences

This work presents improved approaches for integrating patterns and processes within hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and permafrost on Arctic landscapes. Emphasis was placed on addressing fundamental interdisciplinary questions using robust, repeatable methods. Water tracks were examined in the foothills of the Brooks Range to ascertain their role within the range of features that transport water in Arctic regions. Classes of water tracks were developed using multiple factor analysis based on their geomorphic, soil and vegetation characteristics. These classes were validated to verify that they were repeatable. Water tracks represented a broad spectrum of patterns and processes primarily driven by surficial geology. …

Sea-Ice Habitat Preference Of The Pacific Walrus (Odobenus Rosmarus Divergens) In The Bering Sea: A Multiscaled Approach, Alexander Edward Sacco Dec 2015

Sea-Ice Habitat Preference Of The Pacific Walrus (Odobenus Rosmarus Divergens) In The Bering Sea: A Multiscaled Approach, Alexander Edward Sacco

Geosciences

The goal of this thesis is to define specific parameters of mesoscale sea-ice seascapes for which walruses show preference during important periods of their natural history. This research thesis incorporates sea-ice geophysics, marine-mammal ecology, remote sensing, computer vision techniques, and traditional ecological knowledge of indigenous subsistence hunters in order to quantitatively study walrus preference of sea ice during the spring migration in the Bering Sea. Using an approach that applies seascape ecology, or landscape ecology to the marine environment, our goal is to define specific parameters of ice-patch descriptors and mesoscale seascapes in order to evaluate and describe potential walrus …

Seasonal Movements And Habitat Use Of Rainbow Trout In The Susitna River Basin, Southcentral Alaska, Kevin Marshall Fraley Dec 2015

Seasonal Movements And Habitat Use Of Rainbow Trout In The Susitna River Basin, Southcentral Alaska, Kevin Marshall Fraley

Fisheries

Potamodromous Rainbow Trout are an important ecological and recreational resource in freshwater systems of Alaska, and increased human development, hydroelectric projects, declining Pacific salmon stocks, and climate change may threaten their populations. We used aerial and on-the-ground telemetry tracking, field-measured and remotely-sensed aquatic habitat characteristics, snorkel surveys, and resource selection and occupancy models to characterize seasonal movements and habitat use of adult Rainbow Trout (>400 mm FL) at multiple spatial and temporal scales across the large (31,221 km²) and complex Susitna River basin of southcentral Alaska during 2003-2004 and 2013-2014. We found that trout overwintered in mainstem habitats near …

The Effects Of Dietary Essential Fatty Acid Enrichment On The Nutrition And Condition Of Red King Crab (Paralithodes Camtschaticus) Larvae, Asia Beder Dec 2015

The Effects Of Dietary Essential Fatty Acid Enrichment On The Nutrition And Condition Of Red King Crab (Paralithodes Camtschaticus) Larvae, Asia Beder

Fisheries

Alaska red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) is a commercially valuable crab species in Alaska; however, six of the nine red king crab stocks in Alaska are depleted and have failed to recover even after closures of the fisheries. Hatchery rearing is being explored as a possibility for rehabilitating these stocks. In Chapter 1, I review the importance of diet, particularly fatty acids (FAs), when raising crustacean larvae in hatcheries. Long-chain polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) are important in molting success, growth, ability to handle stress, and overall survival of crustaceans. Specifically, when the FAs docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), …

Assisting School Personnel With Youth Transitioning From Residential Treatment To A School Environment, Kristi Smith

Counseling

The following research project examines the data and literature regarding youth who reside in residential treatment centers for behavior and mental health purposes. The paper introduces common risk factors that youth are experiencing which contribute to their placement in the facilities, as well as the difficulties they face upon exiting the treatment program. This project explores how schools can assist students in the transition from residential treatment to a school setting using a bio-ecological model that supports the students on an individual level up to a systemic level. School counselors serve as a key point of contact for transitioning students …

X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry Using Synchrotron Radiation With Applications In Unmanned Aircraft Environmental Sensing, Sean Richard Barberie Dec 2015

X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry Using Synchrotron Radiation With Applications In Unmanned Aircraft Environmental Sensing, Sean Richard Barberie

Chemistry and Biochemistry

In this thesis I present an analytical optimization of the Synchrotron Radiation X-Ray Fluorescence (SR-XRF) technique for applications in unmanned aircraft aerosol studies. In environmental and atmospheric science, there is a pressing need for aerosol measurements at various altitudes in the atmosphere and spanning large regions. This need is currently either ignored, or met to a limited degree by studies that employ manned aircraft. There is, however, a great deal of opportunity to improve and expand on these studies using the emerging technology of unmanned aircraft systems. A newly developed aerosol sampler makes this opportunity a near-reality by its ability …

Structural Study Of Pb(Ii) And Sb(V) Adsorption On The Hydroxylated Hematite(1102) Surface, Canrong Qiu, N/A 丘灿荣 Dec 2015

Structural Study Of Pb(Ii) And Sb(V) Adsorption On The Hydroxylated Hematite(1102) Surface, Canrong Qiu, N/A 丘灿荣

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Surface complexation reactions at mineral-water interface play a key role in dictating the mobility and bioavailability of aqueous species in the environment, considering the minerals (like iron-(oxyhydr)oxides), ubiquitous in nature, are usually of high specific surface area and contain a lot of potentially reactive surface sites for binding ions. Thus, the fundamental understanding of surface complexation reactions is essential to better model the environmental fate and transport of toxic aqueous species. In the current study, the hematite (1102) surface was selected as a model substrate for iron-(oxyhydr)oxides commonly found in the environment to investigate the surface complexation reactions of Pb(II) …

The astrophysical 18F(p,α)15O rate determines, in large part, the extent to which the observable radioisotope 18F is produced in novae. This rate, however, has been extremely uncertain owing to the unknown properties of a strong subthreshold resonance and its possible interference with higher-lying resonances. The new Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas-jet target has been used for the first time to determine the spin of this important resonance and significantly reduce uncertainties in the 18F(p,α)15O rate.

Critical Point Symmetry For The Spherical To Triaxially Deformed Shape Phase Transition, Yu Zhang, Feng Pan, Yan An Luo, J. P. Draayer Dec 2015

Critical Point Symmetry For The Spherical To Triaxially Deformed Shape Phase Transition, Yu Zhang, Feng Pan, Yan An Luo, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

The critical point T(5) symmetry for the spherical to triaxially deformed shape phase transition is introduced from the Bohr Hamiltonian by approximately separating variables at a given γ deformation with 0°≤γ≤30°. The resulting spectral and E2 properties have been investigated in detail. The results indicate that the original X(5) and Z(5) critical point symmetries can be naturally realized within the T(5) model in the γ=0° and γ=30° limit, respectively, which thus provides a dynamical connection between the two symmetries. Comparison of the theoretical calculations for 148Ce, 160Yb, 192Pt and 194Pt with the corresponding experimental data is also made, which indicates …

The research is community-driven by the Pavva Iñupiaq Dancers of Fairbanks, families with Iñupiaq children in their household, and other Iñupiat worldwide. My doctoral research addresses how we view each Iñupiat Ilitqusiat (Iñupiaq Values), how our Iñupiat Ilitqusiat have been passed down, and how we pass down our Iñupiaq cultural heritage to our future cultural-bearers. Participants talk about our Iñupiat Ilitqusiat to acknowledge that we are Iñupiat wherever we live. I assert that in order to conduct culturally appropriate …

After The Prestige: A Postmodern Analysis Of Penn And Teller, Liz Miller, Joseph Zompetti Dec 2015

After The Prestige: A Postmodern Analysis Of Penn And Teller, Liz Miller, Joseph Zompetti

Faculty Publications - Communications

By mocking the magic community and revealing the secret behind some of their tricks, Penn and Teller perform a kind of parodic and post-modern “anti-magic.” Penn and Teller display an artful use of rhetoric; in exposing the secrets and shortcomings of conjuring, they are revolutionizing the way people think about both the art of magic and the magic community. Individuals such as Penn and Teller may use parody to subvert the hegemonic interpretations. However, we also know that it is difficult to bring down a system while operating within that system. Thus, this article explores the way Penn and Teller …

With the increased prevalence of virtualization in the modern computing environment, the security of that technology becomes of paramount importance. Virtual Machine Introspection (VMI) is one of the technologies that has emerged to provide security for virtual environments by examining and then interpreting the state of an active Virtual Machine (VM). VMI has seen use in systems administration, digital forensics, intrusion detection, and honeypots. As with any technology, VMI has both productive uses as well as harmful uses. The research presented in this dissertation aims to enable a guest VM to determine if it is under examination by an external …

Visual Artists Experiencing Nature: Examining Human-Environment Relationships, Amy Lynn Wiita Dec 2015

Visual Artists Experiencing Nature: Examining Human-Environment Relationships, Amy Lynn Wiita

Anthropology

Anthropology has a long history collaborating with artists to understand their artwork. However, little research exists in the discipline that focuses on artists as a group, their creative process, and what may influence that process. In particular, how artists use nature and place has not been studied; instead, anthropology has generally considered nature and place as merely a backdrop for culture rather than for its impact on cultural expression. Identification of diverse aspects of the interdependence of ecological and social systems can inform our understanding of how people address issues of environmental concern. Managers, scientists, creative people, and others working …

Wrestling, Archery, And Horse Racing In Buryatia: Traditional Sports Competitions And Social Change, Stefan Krist Dec 2015

Wrestling, Archery, And Horse Racing In Buryatia: Traditional Sports Competitions And Social Change, Stefan Krist

Anthropology

Sporting activities are examined in order to better understand a society's general socio-economic and political changes. The two basic research questions are the following: (1) Which economic, social, political, and cultural changes in and of the Buryat society were and are reflected in Buryat traditional sports? (2) How far and in which ways did and do Buryat traditional sports and the people engaged in them contribute to social change? Anthropological studies of play, games, and sport, an overview of which is presented in Chapter 1, have revealed that sports are closely linked and tightly entangled with the cultures and societies, …

This project is a response to what I noticed to be a challenge for both my ELL students and myself in multiple school settings--teaching and learning specific English grammar skills. Prior to beginning this program, over the past ten years I had the privilege of working in a number of schools--both internationally and stateside--teaching various ages/levels of ELL learners. It was, however, my time in rural Alaska that prompted me to seek out additional schooling for help in overcoming the challenges of teaching grammar skills.

Characterization And Diagnostic Methods For Geomagnetic Auroral Infrasound Waves, Justin J. Oldham Dec 2015

Characterization And Diagnostic Methods For Geomagnetic Auroral Infrasound Waves, Justin J. Oldham

Physics

Infrasonic perturbations resulting from auroral activity have been observed since the 1950's. In the last decade advances in infrasonic microphone sensitivity, high latitude sensor coverage, time series analysis methods and computational efficiency have elucidated new types of auroral infrasound. Persistent periods of infrasonic activity associated with geomagnetic sub-storms have been termed geomagnetic auroral infrasound waves [GAIW]. We consider 63 GAIW events recorded by the Fairbanks, AK infrasonic array I53US ranging from 2003 to 2014 and encompassing a complete solar cycle. We make observations of the acoustic features of these events alongside magnetometer, riometer, and all-sky camera data in an effort …

Local Scale Structures In Earth's Thermospheric Winds And Their Consequences For Wind Driven Transport, Manbharat Singh Dhadly Dec 2015

Local Scale Structures In Earth's Thermospheric Winds And Their Consequences For Wind Driven Transport, Manbharat Singh Dhadly

Physics

In the traditional picture of Earth's upper thermosphere (~190-300 km), it is widely presumed that its convective stability and enormous kinematic viscosity attenuate wind gradients, and hence smooth out any structure present in the wind over scale size of several hundreds of kilometers. However, several independent experimental studies have shown that observed upper thermospheric wind fields at high latitudes contain stronger than expected local-scale spatial structures. The motivation of this dissertation is to investigate how the resulting local-scale gradients would distort neutral air masses and complicate thermospheric wind transport. To achieve this goal, we examined the behavior of a simple …

Investigation Of Strongly Ducted Infrasonic Dispersion Using A Vertical Eigenfunction Expansion Of The Helmholtz Equation In A Modal Broad Band Acoustic Propagation Code, Robert Alexander Edon

Physics

This study investigates an infrasound propagation model created by the National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) which is applied to atmospheric data with a strong temperature inversion in the lower atmosphere. This temperature inversion is believed to be the primary cause of a dispersed infrasonic signal recorded by an infrasound sensor array located on the Southern California coast in August, 2012. The received signal is characterized by initial low frequency content followed by a high frequency content tail. It is shown the NCPA model is hindered by limited atmospheric data and no ground truth for the source function which generated …

The STAR Collaborationpresents for the first time two-dimensional di-hadron correlations with identified leading hadrons in 200 GeV central Au+Au and minimum-bias d+Au collisions to explore hadronization mechanisms in the quark gluon plasma. The enhancement of the jet-like yield for leading pions in Au + Au data with respect to the d + Au reference and the absence of such an enhancement for leading non-pions (protons and kaons) are discussed within the context of a quark recombination scenario. The correlated yield at large angles, specifically in the ridge region, is found to be significantly higher for leading non-pions than pions. …
