Gratitude And Kindness: Just What The Doctor Ordered, Kathleen E. Glynn Jun 2015

Gratitude And Kindness: Just What The Doctor Ordered, Kathleen E. Glynn

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In recent years, the positive psychology movement has grown and researchers have become interested in studying overall well-being and the predictors of happiness. Previous studies have indicated that biology plays a role in determining an individual’s happiness, but this is not the only contributing factor. Thought patterns and behaviors play a key role in one’s overall wellbeing. The current study evaluated the relationship that a practice of gratitude and performing acts of kindness had on participants’ scores on happiness, gratitude and social support scales. It was predicted that individuals who performed acts of kindness and practice gratitude for one week …

Differential Effects Of Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (Mdpv) And Mephedrone In Rats Trained To Discriminate Mdma Or A D-Amphetamine+Mdma Mixture, Eric Louis Harvey Jun 2015

Differential Effects Of Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (Mdpv) And Mephedrone In Rats Trained To Discriminate Mdma Or A D-Amphetamine+Mdma Mixture, Eric Louis Harvey

Masters Theses

Recent reports on the abuse of novel synthetic cathinone derivatives call attention to serious public health risks of these substances. In response to this concern, a growing body of preclinical research has characterized the psychopharmacology of these substances, particularly mephedrone (MEPH) or methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), noting their similarities to MDMA and cocaine. The present study employed drug discrimination methodology to assess the discriminative stimulus effects of MEPH and MDPV in male Sprague-Dawley rats trained to discriminate 1.5 mg/kg 3,4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) or a mixture of 1.5 mg/kg MDMA and 0.5 mg/kg d-amphetamine (MDMA+AMPH). After establishing dose response functions with each training …

Sleep Hygiene Practices: A Cross Cultural Survey Of Sleeping And Dreaming In College Students, Ivan Noe Martinez Salazar Jun 2015

Sleep Hygiene Practices: A Cross Cultural Survey Of Sleeping And Dreaming In College Students, Ivan Noe Martinez Salazar

Masters Theses

There is consensus that a sizeable percentage of people in most developed countries do not obtain adequate amounts or quality of sleep. These disruptions in sleep, when chronic and severe, can lead to psychological, behavioral and health consequences. The focus on behavioral and contextual factors that impact sleep has been termed “sleep hygiene”. An on-line anonymous survey collected sociodemographic information, as well as self-reports on sleep, sleep hygiene practices and dreaming across two cultural groups (English & Spanish speaking responders). A total of 204 participants (majority of them college and graduate students) answered the survey. Both cultural groups, English and …

Thermal History Of The Michigan Basin: Results From Thermal Maturation Data And Geodynamic Modelling, Kirk A. Wagenvelt Jun 2015

Thermal History Of The Michigan Basin: Results From Thermal Maturation Data And Geodynamic Modelling, Kirk A. Wagenvelt

Masters Theses

Thermal cooling, crustal convection, high temperature fluid advection, and 1.0 Km of eroded overburden are required to explain thermal maturation observations in the Michigan Basin. Observed tectonic subsidence in central Michigan follows an exponential decay indicative of thermal cooling following an anomalous heating event. Crustal convection is responsible for episodes of rapid subsidence coincident with the late Paleozoic Appalachian orogeny. Fluid advection through dilated faults reactivated by the Alleghanian orogeny brought hot fluids (as much as 255⁰ C) to the surface and impacted thermal maturation of organic matter in sediments. Models require 1.0 Km of eroded overburden to model thermal …

Designing Women: The Definition Of “Woman” In The Convention On The Elimination Of All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women, Elise Meyer Jun 2015

Designing Women: The Definition Of “Woman” In The Convention On The Elimination Of All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women, Elise Meyer

Chicago Journal of International Law

This Comment begins by noting the indeterminacy of the term “woman” in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), arguing that the term, as it is used in CEDAW, is inclusive of trans*individuals, thus extending CEDAW’s protections to this historically marginalized group. The Comment dissects the term “woman” in CEDAW, based in part on the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, examining the ordinary meaning, the object and purpose, and the supplementary materials of CEDAW to argue that CEDAW protects trans*individuals against discrimination and other abuses outlined in the treaty. The Comment also …

Bounded Rationality Alters The Dynamics Of Paediatric Immunization Acceptance, Tamer Oraby, Chris T. Bauch Jun 2015

Bounded Rationality Alters The Dynamics Of Paediatric Immunization Acceptance, Tamer Oraby, Chris T. Bauch

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Interactions between disease dynamics and vaccinating behavior have been explored in many coupled behavior-disease models. Cognitive effects such as risk perception, framing, and subjective probabilities of adverse events can be important determinants of the vaccinating behaviour, and represent departures from the pure “rational” decision model that are often described as “bounded rationality”. However, the impact of such cognitive effects in the context of paediatric infectious disease vaccines has received relatively little attention. Here, we develop a disease-behavior model that accounts for bounded rationality through prospect theory. We analyze the model and compare its predictions to a reduced model that lacks …

Impossible To Regulate: Social Media, Terrorists, And The Role For The U.N., Paulina Wu Jun 2015

Impossible To Regulate: Social Media, Terrorists, And The Role For The U.N., Paulina Wu

Chicago Journal of International Law

The posting of journalist beheadings online and the arrests of numerous nationals attempting to join terrorist organizations have shown that terrorists are increasingly using social media to spread ideology and recruit members. The popularity of social media around the world provides a huge potential audience for terrorist content. Unfortunately, because of states' inability to cooperate, previous attempts to govern and police the Internet have failed. Any regulation of the Internet or social media also raises collective action problems and baseline definition issues. The U.N. is not in the position to pass a binding treaty or convention because use of social …

Isolation And Host Range Of Staphylococcus Aureus Bacteriophages And Use For Decontamination Of Fomites, Kyle C. Jensen Jun 2015

Isolation And Host Range Of Staphylococcus Aureus Bacteriophages And Use For Decontamination Of Fomites, Kyle C. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus is a common bacterium found on the skin and mucosal membranes of about 20% of the population. S. aureus growth on the skin is harmless, but if it bypasses the skin it can causes life-threatening diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, bacteremia, and sepsis. Antibiotic-resistant strains of S. aureus, called Methicillin Resistant S. aureus (MRSA), are resistant to most antibiotics except vancomycin. However, vancomycin resistant strains of MRSA are becoming more common. In this study, 12 phages were isolated capable of infecting human S. aureus and/or MRSA strains. Five phages were discovered through mitomycin C induction of prophages and …

Estimating Pinyon And Juniper Cover Across Utah Using Naip Imagery, Darrell B. Roundy Jun 2015

Estimating Pinyon And Juniper Cover Across Utah Using Naip Imagery, Darrell B. Roundy

Theses and Dissertations

Expansion of Pinus L. (pinyon) and Juniperus L. (juniper) (P-J) trees into sagebrush (Artemisia L.) steppe communities can lead to negative effects on hydrology, loss of wildlife habitat, and a decrease in desirable understory vegetation. Tree reduction treatments are often implemented to mitigate these negative effects. In order to prioritize and effectively plan these treatments, rapid, accurate, and inexpensive methods are needed to estimate tree canopy cover at the landscape scale. We used object based image analysis (OBIA) software (Feature AnalystTM for ArcMap 10.1®, ENVI Feature Extraction®, and Trimble eCognition Developer 8.2®) to extract tree canopy cover using NAIP (National …

Botheration And Recognition Of Prescriptive Rules, Sara D. Smith Jun 2015

Botheration And Recognition Of Prescriptive Rules, Sara D. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Passions flare up around the use and “misuse” of prescriptive rules. Where there is variation in language use, language judgment usually follows—attaching value judgment to linguistic variants forms the foundation of prescriptive ideology in English. Prescriptive attitudes prevail among speakers and writers of English, who feel some pressure to use these forms to avoid a negative judgment. This study surveyed American English speakers using Mechanical Turk to determine which types of rules—spelling, syntactic, morphological, and lexical—bother people the most and inspire the harshest judgments when violated. The surveys asked participants to identify a violated prescriptive rule in a sentence, found …

Cognitive Function And Human Capital Accumulation Across The Day: Evidence From Randomized School Schedules, Teny Maghakian Shapiro, Kevin M. Williams, James E. West Jun 2015

Cognitive Function And Human Capital Accumulation Across The Day: Evidence From Randomized School Schedules, Teny Maghakian Shapiro, Kevin M. Williams, James E. West

Economics

This study examines how variation of within-day cognitive function affects human capital accumulation. Cognitive function, which neurobiologists have found varies widely across the day, has thus far been an important omission in the economics literature. We quantify its role on human capital accumulation using data from five cohorts of college freshman at the United States Air Force Academy, where students face randomized scheduling and a common set of classes and exams. We find clear evidence that daily fluctuations in cognitive function affects academic achievement-a student does 0.25 standard deviations better at her highest observed ability than at her worst. Cognitive …

Using Narrative And Re-Membering Conversations In A Bereavement Group With Students Impacted By Suicide, Krystal J. Howard, Caryn L. Kruse

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

To date, there have been no studies utilizing a narrative bereavement model for students impacted by suicide, in a group counseling setting. The present project intends to fill a gap in the literature. We sought to answer the research question, “Do narrative lines of inquiry, specifically re-membering conversations, help to ameliorate the pain of a loved one’s death by suicide?” We hypothesized that re-membering conversations would help to reduce pain, based on the premise that re-membering conversations reconnect the bereaved to the life of their deceased loved one, using a narrative which allows the life, values, thoughts, and wishes of …

The Importance Of Social Support For Newly Emancipated Foster Youth, Valentina Vela Jun 2015

The Importance Of Social Support For Newly Emancipated Foster Youth, Valentina Vela

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The Child Welfare system is widely known as the macro system responsible for ensuring the safety of children within particular parameters, which, in some cases, results in the removal of these individuals from their family of origin. Research has explored the short- and long-term effects of this disruption in hopes of improving the ability of services to effectively prevent negative effects. Despite improvements on a macro and micro level, foster youth continue to be unprepared for the transition out of the foster care system, resulting in negative outcomes. According to research, the newly developed theory of emerging adulthood may have …

Custodial Grandmothers Raising Children With Disabilities And The Stressors They Face, Kanika Oni Kisero

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Stressors that custodial grandmothers face while raising children with disabilities can be more overwhelming compared to stressors experienced by grandmothers of non-disabled children. Strategies and various supports were looked into in order to determine how custodial grandmothers practice self-care so they may experience positive mental health outcomes. A purposive sample of custodial grandmothers was surveyed and the results obtained provided some support on how self-care is and is not practiced in order to manage stress. This study resulted in non-significant findings, which did not support the hypotheses. Additional analysis was used to gauge levels of stress, but could not …

Using Swat To Simulate Crop Yields And Salinity Levels In The North Fork River Basin, Usa, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Daniel E. Storm, Art L. Stoecker Jun 2015

Using Swat To Simulate Crop Yields And Salinity Levels In The North Fork River Basin, Usa, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Daniel E. Storm, Art L. Stoecker

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Crop yields and salinity levels in the North Fork of the Red River (North Fork River) basin, located in southwestern Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle, were analyzed based on the diverse climate in the region. Saline irrigation water is a major problem in the basin. The Elm Fork Creek flows through salt deposits, making the creek and its receiving stream, the North Fork River, too saline to use for irrigation. This greatly reduces the number of hectares that can be utilized for agricultural crops within the basin. A baseline SWAT model was setup, calibrated and validated to simulate streamflow and …

Isolation And Epidemiological Analysis Of Verotoxigenic E. Coli From Patients With Acute Gastroenteritis: A Prospective Study Aiming To Reduce The Burden Of Infection In The Cork Region., Shirley Ross

Masters

Verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC) is a serious gastrointestinal pathogen associated with morbidity and mortality in the first world, as accentuated by the O104 VTEC outbreak in Germany in 2011. Molecular detection of Verotoxin (VT) has increased the detection of VTEC across Europe however, Ireland still has the highest incidence and isolation is still a key step in the confirmation of infection and the control and prevention of outbreaks. Currently no standard protocol exists for the detection, isolation and characterisation of non-O157 VTEC and it is feared that due to this that the prevalence of VTEC is under-reported. This body of …

Psychological Services For Pediatric Victims Of Non Accidental Trauma, Robyn Finckbone

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Child abuse is a significant problem within our society. In 2010, there were approximately 1,560 fatalities as a result of child abuse; 17.6% of those deaths were the direct result of physical abuse and 80% occurred in children under the age of 4. There is a dearth of research examining severe physical abuse among children and, as a result, the demographics of this population are unclear as are the psychological referrals and services provided to these children. The aims of the current study are to identify the demographic characteristics of child victims of non-accidental trauma (NAT, i.e. physical abuse) as …

Molecular Mechanisms That Govern Human Cardiac Stem Cell Age Disparity, Tania Fuentes Jun 2015

Molecular Mechanisms That Govern Human Cardiac Stem Cell Age Disparity, Tania Fuentes

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Transplantation of adult endogenous cardiovascular progenitor cells for heart repair results in some clinical benefit, however these stem cells lack the regenerative capacity unique to neonatal cardiovascular stem cells. The goal of this work was to identify mechanisms that contribute to the decline of cardiac stem cell regenerative ability with age and investigate novel therapeutic strategies to improve cardiac stem cell function. When comparing neonatal and adult cardiovascular stem cell clones, both cell types were capable of cardiomyogenic differentiation. However, the expression levels of forty-one microRNAs were significantly altered with age. Expression differences were correlated with reduced proliferation and a …

Molecular Characterization And Inhibition Of Antibodies Elicited Against Galactosyltransferase Knockout Pig Xenografts, John M. Stewart Jun 2015

Molecular Characterization And Inhibition Of Antibodies Elicited Against Galactosyltransferase Knockout Pig Xenografts, John M. Stewart

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

On average, 21 people in the United States die every day while waiting for a transplantable organ. Moreover, at the end of 2014, nearly 130,000 additional individuals were still on the transplant waiting list. Xenotransplantation, the transplantation of cells and/or organs from a member of another species, is both a viable supplement for, and bridge to, allotransplantation. Pigs are the favored organ donor because they: 1) breed and grow rapidly, 2) can be genetically modified, and 3) present few ethical concerns. However, due in part to their phylogenetic distance, several barriers must be successfully overcome before clinical xenotransplantation can be …

Tslp-Induced Mechanisms And Potential Therapies For Crlf2 B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Olivia L. Francis

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Childhood CRLF2 B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (CRLF2 B-ALL) is a high-risk form of leukemia that is associated with poor patient survival outcomes. CRLF2 B-ALL is five times more prevalent in Hispanic children than others and is associated with a higher rate of relapse, thus contributing significantly to childhood cancer health disparities. This disease occurs due to alterations of the CRLF2 gene, leading to overexpression of the CRLF2 protein- a component of the receptor signaling complex for the cytokine Thymic Stromal LymphoPoietin (TSLP) on the surface of B-ALL cells. TSLP has been shown to induce proliferation of human and mouse B-cell …
