Inorganisms: An Emergent Approach To Sustainability, David Kadish, Aleksandra Dulic
Inorganisms: An Emergent Approach To Sustainability, David Kadish, Aleksandra Dulic
Nordes Conference Series
Inorganisms is a workshop that engages participants in a process of creation through reflective practice as a way of building and understanding complexity. It models a design process aimed at addressing large-scale global issues that asks designers to create solutions on a local scale, while forming interconnections to neighbouring places and designers. The workshop takes a pragmatic approach to learning through design and experience in order to come to a better understanding of complex, emergent systems. Participants are asked to design and create an inorganic organism from provided building blocks. Each inorganism communicates with other inorganisms, ultimately creating an emergent …

Baghdad Science Journal
Some new complexes of 4-(5-(1,5-dimethyl-3-oxo-2-phenyl pyrazolidin-4- ylimino)-3,3-dimethyl cyclohexylideneamino) -1,5- dimethyl-2- phenyl -1H- pyrazol -3(2H) –one (L) with Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Pd(II), Re(V) and Pt(IV) were prepared. The ligand and its metal complexes were characterized by phisco- chemical spectroscopic techniques. The spectral data were suggested that the (L) as a neutral tetradentate ligand is coordinated with the metal ions through two nitrogen and two oxygen atoms. These studies revealed Octahedral geometries for all metal complexes, except square planar for Pd(II) complex. Moreover, the thermodynamic activation parameters, such as ΔE*, ΔH,ΔS,ΔG and K are calculated from the TGA curves using …

Neurotranscriptome Profiles Of Multiple Zebrafish Strains, Ryan Y. Wong, John Godwin
Biology Faculty Publications
Behavioral displays or physiological responses are often influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms in the context of the organism's evolutionary history. Understanding differences in transcriptome profiles can give insight into adaptive or pathological responses. We utilize high throughput sequencing (RNA-sequencing) to characterize the neurotranscriptome profiles in both males and females across four strains of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Strains varied by previously documented differences in stress and anxiety-like behavioral responses, and generations removed from wild-caught individuals. Here we describe detailed methodologies and quality controls in generating the rawRNA-sequencing reads that are publically available in NCBI's Gene Expression Omnibus database (GSE61108).

Nature’S Law: The Evolutionary Origin Of Property Rights, Kathryn Loncarich
Nature’S Law: The Evolutionary Origin Of Property Rights, Kathryn Loncarich
Pace Law Review
This article contributes to the outline of the origin of property rights set forth by Professor Krier, by more fully analyzing the role of evolutionary biology in the development of property rights. This article focuses on the pre-political formation of property ownership and the initial formation of concepts of property and ownership. Expanding on Krier’s analysis, this article considers the implications of this evolutionary foundation on our modern property regime, particularly given the growing chasm between the wealthy on one side and the poor and middle-class on the other.
Part II discusses the growing disparity of wealth in America and …

Effects Of Early-Adolescent, Mid-Adolescent, Or Adult Stress On Morphine Conditioned Place Preference, Chloe Shields
Senior Theses
In light of previous work demonstrating that stress can increase subjective drug reward in adult rats, the present study investigated the influence of stress on morphine conditioned place preference (CPP) in early-adolescent, mid-adolescent, and adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Subjects in each age group were assigned to either a no stress condition or a stress condition in which they were exposed to an unpredictable eight-day schedule of elevated platform and synthetic fox odor stressors. Place conditioning then evaluated subjective morphine reward in all animals. Using a biased procedure, subjects were assigned to receive morphine on the initially non-preferred side of the …

Metastatic epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) cells can form multicellular spheroids while in suspension and disperse directly throughout the peritoneum to seed secondary lesions. There is growing evidence that EOC spheroids are key mediators of metastasis, and they use specific intracellular signalling pathways to control cancer cell growth and metabolism for increased survival. Our laboratory discovered that AKT signalling is reduced during spheroid formation leading to cellular quiescence and autophagy, and these may be defining features of tumour cell dormancy. To further define the phenotype of EOC spheroids, we have initiated studies of the Liver kinase B1 (LKB1)-5′-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) …

Both genotoxic and non-genotoxic chemicals can act as carcinogens. However, while genotoxic compounds lead directly to mutations that promote unregulated cell growth, the mechanism by which non-genotoxic carcinogens lead to cellular transformation is poorly understood. Using a model non-genotoxic carcinogen, arsenic, we show here that exposure to arsenic inhibits mismatch repair (MMR) in human cells, possibly through its ability to stimulate epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-dependent tyrosine phosphorylation of proliferating cellular nuclear antigen (PCNA). HeLa cells exposed to exogenous arsenic demonstrate a dose- and time-dependent increase in the levels of EGFR and tyrosine 211-phosphorylated PCNA. Cell extracts derived from arsenic-treated …
Supporting Adult Learners' Metacognitive Development With A Sociotechnical System, Kathryn Wozniak
Supporting Adult Learners' Metacognitive Development With A Sociotechnical System, Kathryn Wozniak
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Metacognition is defined as thinking about and reflecting on one's cognitive processes. In learning contexts, strong metacognition leads to retention, academic success, and deep learning. While we know a lot about the metacognition of learners in grades K-12 and college, there are limited studies on adult learners' (24 and older) metacognitive awareness, how to support it, or the role technology can play, particularly since e-learning is quickly becoming the central mode of learning for adult learners. Thus, I have the following motivating research question: How can we support adult learners' metacognitive development in e-learning environments?
To better understand adult learners' …

Candida albicans adhesins have amyloid-forming sequences. In Als5p, these amyloid sequences cluster cell surface adhesins to create high avidity surface adhesion nanodomains. Such nanodomains form after force is applied to the cell surface by atomic force microscopy or laminar flow. Here we report centrifuging and resuspending S. cerevisiae cells expressing Als5p led to 1.7-fold increase in initial rate of adhesion to ligand coated beads. Furthermore, mechanical stress from vortex-mixing of Als5p cells or C. albicans cells also induced additional formation of amyloid nanodomains and consequent activation of adhesion. Vortex-mixing for 60 seconds increased the initial rate of adhesion 1.6-fold. The …

Tumor Suppressor Role Of Abl Kinase In Crki-Transformed Fibroblasts And Its Implication In Human Cancer Cells, Khong Ying Ng
Doctoral Dissertations
Since the discovery of the first oncogenic Crk adaptor protein, v-Crk in 1988, various studies have been conducted to understand the signaling mechanism of Crk proteins. In our previous knockdown study to investigate the importance of several CrkI SH3-binding effectors in the tumorigenesis of CrkI, we were surprised to learn that Abl kinase negatively regulates CrkI transformation in NIH3T3 cells. Because constitutively active Abl kinase, in the form of BCR-ABL, is famously known to cause chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in humans, we initially expected a similar tumor promoting role for Abl in CrkI transformation. However, downregulated Abl kinase (through shRNA …
