Effects Of Pringle Maneuver And Partial Hepatectomy On The Pharmacokinetics And Blood–Brain Barrier Permeability Of Sodium Fluorescein In Rats, Mohammad K. Miah, Imam H. Shaik, Ulrich Bickel, Reza Mehvar

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Liver diseases are known to affect the function of remote organs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of Pringle maneuver, which results in hepatic ischemia–reperfusion (IR) injury, and partial hepatectomy (Hx) on the pharmacokinetics and brain distribution of sodium fluorescein (FL), which is a widely used marker of blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability. Rats were subjected to Pringle maneuver (total hepatic ischemia) for 20 min with (HxIR) or without (IR) 70% hepatectomy. Sham-operated animals underwent laparotomy only. After 15 min or 8 h of reperfusion, a single 25-mg/kg dose of FL was injected intravenously and serial …

Na+/K+-Atpase α1 Mrna Expression In The Gill And Rectal Gland Of The Atlantic Stingray, Dasyatis Sabina, Following Acclimation To Increased Salinity Physiology, Andrew N. Evans, Faith N. Lambert

Faculty Publications

Background: The salt-secreting rectal gland plays a major role in elasmobranch osmoregulation, facilitating ion balance in hyperosmotic environments in a manner analogous to the teleost gill. Several studies have examined the central role of the sodium pump Na+/K+-ATPase in osmoregulatory tissues of euryhaline elasmobranch species, including regulation of Na+/K+-ATPase activity and abundance in response to salinity acclimation. However, while the transcriptional regulation of Na+/K+-ATPase in the teleost gill has been well documented the potential for mRNA regulation to facilitate rectal gland plasticity during salinity acclimation in elasmobranchs …

The Effects Of Arginine Vasopressin On Maternal Behavior And Aggression In Peromyscus Californicus Mothers, Nathaniel Ng Jun 2015

The Effects Of Arginine Vasopressin On Maternal Behavior And Aggression In Peromyscus Californicus Mothers, Nathaniel Ng

Honors Projects

Research studies since the 1950s have shown that a chemical within the brain called arginine vasopressin (AVP) is associated with the modulation of many different social behaviors in mammals. Some of these behaviors are related to parenting, such as parental care initiation, aggression, social recognition, depression and anxiety. Understanding the physiology behind AVP regulation could allow for the creation of new therapies for treating human social disorders, such as using an AVP receptor antagonist to attenuate anxiety. This project examines how neural injections of AVP and an AVP receptor antagonist affect both maternal care and aggression in female Peromyscus californicus …

Treating Trauma: The Efficacy Of Emdr As A Treatment For Ptsd, Grace S. Crawford Jun 2015

Treating Trauma: The Efficacy Of Emdr As A Treatment For Ptsd, Grace S. Crawford

Honors Projects

This literature review examines the efficacy of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) relative to other evidence-based treatments for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), such as Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). The paper explores the problem of PTSD; outlines the history, theory, and initial trials of EMDR; and examines five randomized controlled trials which compare EMDR to PE or CPT. Results suggest that neither treatment model produces significantly greater reductions in PTSD symptoms, though there is some evidence that EMDR may be better tolerated and produce desired results faster than other treatments.

Narcissism Is Associated With Weakened Frontostriatal Connectivity: A Dti Study, David S. Chester, Donald R. Lynam, David K. Powell, C. Nathan Dewall Jun 2015

Narcissism Is Associated With Weakened Frontostriatal Connectivity: A Dti Study, David S. Chester, Donald R. Lynam, David K. Powell, C. Nathan Dewall

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Narcissism is characterized by the search for affirmation and admiration from others. Might this motivation to find external sources of acclaim exist to compensate for neurostructural deficits that link the self with reward? Greater structural connectivity between brain areas that process self-relevant stimuli (i.e. the medial prefrontal cortex) and reward (i.e. the ventral striatum) is associated with fundamentally positive self-views. We predicted that narcissism would be associated with less integrity of this frontostriatal pathway. We used diffusion tensor imaging to assess the frontostriatal structural connectivity among 50 healthy undergraduates (32 females, 18 males) who also completed a measure of grandiose …

Estimates Of Micro-, Nano-, And Picoplankton Contributions To Particle Export In The Northeast Pacific, B. L. Mackinson, S. B. Moran, M. W. Lomas, Gillian M. Stewart, R. P. Kelly

Publications and Research

The contributions of micro-, nano-, and picoplankton to particle export were estimated from measurements of size-fractionated particulate 234Th, organic carbon, and phytoplankton indicator pigments obtained during five cruises between 2010 and 2012 along Line P in the subarctic northeast Pacific Ocean. Sinking fluxes of particulate organic carbon (POC) and indicator pigments were calculated from 234Th;238U disequilibria and, during two cruises, measured by a sediment trap at Ocean Station Papa. POC fluxes at 100m ranged from 0.65 to 7.95 mmolm2 d1, similar in magnitude to previous results at Line P. Microplankton pigments dominate indicator pigment fluxes (averaging 6919% of total pigment …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

MUC16, precursor of the most widely used ovarian cancer biomarker CA125, is up regulated in multiple malignancies and is associated with poor prognosis. While the pro-tumorigenic and metastatic roles of MUC16 are ascribed to the cell-associated carboxyl-terminal MUC16 (MUC16-Cter), the exact biochemical nature of MUC16 cleavage generating MUC16-Cter has remained unknown. Using different lengths of dual-epitope (N-terminal FLAG- and C-terminal HA-Tag) tagged C-terminal MUC16 fragments, we demonstrate that MUC16 cleavage takes place in the juxta-membrane ectodomain stretch of twelve amino acids that generates a ~17 kDa cleaved product and is distinct from the predicted sites. This was further corroborated by …

Investigations Of The Air-Water Interface: A Structural Analysis Of Metallic Surface Films And Aquatic Surface Films By Comparative Microscopy, Randall William Smith Jun 2015

Investigations Of The Air-Water Interface: A Structural Analysis Of Metallic Surface Films And Aquatic Surface Films By Comparative Microscopy, Randall William Smith

Dissertations and Theses

The air-water interface is an important natural boundary layer that has been neglected as an area of environmental field research. This study establishes that comparative microscopy can be an effective environmental method, and establishes that the term metallic surface films, is a more accurate descriptor than iron oxide surface films. This research shows that surface films are complex, often with layered structure, serve as habitat for significant biota, and act as a point of mineralization to several transition metal elements including manganese, iron, copper, nickel and zinc. This study demonstrates that surface films form under several conditions and can have …

Gifted Black And Biracial Students At A Predominantly White Gifted School, Clair Elizabeth Pople

Dissertations and Theses

The underrepresentation of gifted Black and Biracial students is a pervasive problem in and of itself, and indicates a much larger struggle of disproportionality of Black and Biracial students who are not called upon or supported in efforts to meet their academic potential. Therefore, an evaluation of the inequity generated by gifted education is warranted. It is true that the majority of gifted programs are often predominantly White. Accordingly, Black and Biracial students who qualify for gifted programs may face unique challenges in their development of racial identity and their socio-emotional health.

Using ethnographic techniques, this case study explored the …

The Varying Role Of Water Column Nutrient Removal Along River Continua In Contrasting Landscapes, Alexander J. Reisinger, Jennifer L. Tank, Emma J. Rosi-Marshall, Robert O. Hall Jr, Michelle A. Baker Jun 2015

The Varying Role Of Water Column Nutrient Removal Along River Continua In Contrasting Landscapes, Alexander J. Reisinger, Jennifer L. Tank, Emma J. Rosi-Marshall, Robert O. Hall Jr, Michelle A. Baker

Biology Faculty Publications

Nutrient transformation processes such as assimilation, dissimilatory transformation, and sorption to sediments are prevalent in benthic zones of headwater streams, but may also occur in the water column. The river continuum concept (RCC) predicts that water column processes become increasingly important with increasing stream size. We predicted that water column nutrient uptake increases with stream size, mirroring carbon/energy dynamics predicted by the RCC. We measured water column uptake of ammonium ( NH+4NH4+ ), nitrate ( NO−3NO3− ), and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in 1st through 5th order stream and river reaches (discharge: 50–68,000 L s−1) in three watersheds ranging from …

Feature Selection In Credit Scoring- A Quadratic Programming Approach Solving With Bisection Method Based On Tabu Search, Jun Huang

Theses and Dissertations

Credit risk is one of the most important topics in the risk management. Meanwhile, it is the major risk of banks and financial institutions encountered as claimed by the Basel capital accord. As a form of credit risk measurement, credit scoring is the credit evaluation process to reduce the current and expected risk of a customer being bad credit. The credit scoring models usually use a set of features to predict the credit status, good credit (unlikely to default) and bad credit (more likely to default), of the applicants. However, with the fast growth in the credit industry and facilitation …

Something To Fear: Perception Of Defining Characteristics Of Animals, Evaluation Of Animals, And The Moderating Role Of Speciesism, Allison Elaine Waters

Theses and Dissertations

Speciesism, a form of prejudice wherein a person gives or takes value away from an organism based upon how he or she categorizes living things, is most likely a form of flexible evolutionary adaptation. However, with increasing awareness of humanity's impact on the environment and growing morality, speciesism is increasingly becoming a disadvantage. Speciesism can be reflected in actions from unethical breeding habits to outright attacks on certain animals. The purpose of this study was to examine if altering the physical appearance of animals affects the person's attitudes towards those animals. It was hypothesized that altering physical characteristics of some …

A Predicted Protein Interactome Identifies Conserved Global Networks And Disease Resistance Subnetworks In Maize, Bryan Musungu, Deepak Bhatnagar, Robert L Brown, Ahmad M Fakhoury, Matt Geisler

Publications

Interactomes are genome-wide roadmaps of protein-protein interactions. They have been produced for humans, yeast, the fruit fly, and Arabidopsis thaliana and have become invaluable tools for generating and testing hypotheses. A predicted interactome for Zea mays (PiZeaM) is presented here as an aid to the research community for this valuable crop species. PiZeaM was built using a proven method of interologs (interacting orthologs) that were identified using both one-to-one and many-to-many orthology between genomes of maize and reference species. Where both maize orthologs occurred for an experimentally determined interaction in the reference species, we predicted a likely interaction in maize. …

Temperature Dependent Surface Reconstruction Of Freely Suspended Films Of 4-N-Heptyloxybenzylidene-4-N-Heptylaniline, Daniel E. Martinez Zambrano Jun 2015

Temperature Dependent Surface Reconstruction Of Freely Suspended Films Of 4-N-Heptyloxybenzylidene-4-N-Heptylaniline, Daniel E. Martinez Zambrano

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Surfaces of freely suspended thick films of 4-n-heptyloxybenzylidene-4-n-heptylaniline (7O.7) in the crystalline-B phase have been imaged using non-contact mode atomic force microscopy. Steps are observed on the surface of the film with a height of 3.0 +/- 0.1 nm corresponding to the upright molecular length of 7O.7. In addition, we find that the step width varies with temperature between 56 and 59 degrees C. The steps are many times wider than the molecular length, suggesting that the steps are not on the surface but instead originate from edge dislocations in the interior. Using a strain model for liquid crystalline layers …

The Lifecycle Of The Germinosome, A Bacillus Subtilis Spore Germination Protein Complex, Anthony J. Troiano Jr Jun 2015

The Lifecycle Of The Germinosome, A Bacillus Subtilis Spore Germination Protein Complex, Anthony J. Troiano Jr

Doctoral Dissertations

Fluorescent fusions to germination proteins of Bacillus subtilis were shown to colocalize into a single focus termed the germinosome in sporulating and germinating spores, but not in outgrowing spores. In sporulating cultures, fluorescent foci are seen immediately upon fluorescent signal detection, ~3 hours before dipicolinic acid uptake, and in fluorescent strains with sspA-lacZ fusions, nearly in parallel with the accumulation of β- galactosidase activity. Furthermore, GerD-GFP self-associated in germinant receptor (GR) null strains, as well as in wild-type Bacillus subtilis, and facilitated germinosome formation in live Escherichia coli when expressed with gerAA-mCherry. These findings suggest the germinosome is made …

Factors Constraining The Reproductive Output Of Baptisia Alba Macrophylla, Ashley Morgan Hembrough Jun 2015

Factors Constraining The Reproductive Output Of Baptisia Alba Macrophylla, Ashley Morgan Hembrough

Theses and Dissertations

Baptisia alba macrophylla, a native, herbaceous perennial legume, produces inflorescences with a large number of flowers, yet matures relatively few fruits. We hypothesized that the number of seeds matured by B. alba macrophylla is maximized based on resource availability at each stage of development, but this optimal number is further compromised by extrinsic factors including pollen limitation and pre-dispersal seed predation by the weevils Apion rostrum and Tychius sordidus. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a field experiment at two sites: (i) the John English Prairie, located in Hudson, IL, and also (ii) the Sugar Grove Nature Center and Funks …

Identity And Investment In The Community Esl Classroom, Jennifer Marie Sacklin Jun 2015

Identity And Investment In The Community Esl Classroom, Jennifer Marie Sacklin

Dissertations and Theses

After Norton Peirce's (1995, Norton, 2000) groundbreaking work in conceptualizing identity as "multiple, changing, and contradictory," many researchers have explored language learners' identities. However, few studies of identity have been conducted within the "overlooked and understudied" (Mathews-Aydinli, 2008) context of adult community ESL (English as a Second Language), and even fewer studies have focused on LESLLA (low-educated second language and literacy acquisition) learners in mainstream community ESL programs.

This thesis, based on a case study of an adult LESLLA learner in a community ESL class, analyzes how this student's identity, the social context of her life, and the classroom space …
