The ability to imitate complex sounds is rare, and among birds has been found only in parrots, songbirds, and hummingbirds. Parrots exhibit the most advanced vocal mimicry among non-human animals. A few studies have noted differences in connectivity, brain position and shape in the vocal learning systems of parrots relative to songbirds and hummingbirds. However, only one parrot species, the budgerigar, has been examined and no differences in the presence of song system structures were found with other avian vocal learners. Motivated by questions of whether there are important differences in the vocal systems of parrots relative to other vocal …

The reference assembly for the domestic horse, EquCab2, published in 2009, was built using approximately 30 million Sanger reads from a Thoroughbred mare named Twilight. Contiguity in the assembly was facilitated using nearly 315 thousand BAC end sequences from Twilight's half brother Bravo. Since then, it has served as the foundation for many genome-wide analyses that include not only the modern horse, but ancient horses and other equid species as well. As data mapped to this reference has accumulated, consistent variation between mapped datasets and the reference, in terms of regions with no read coverage, single nucleotide variants, and small …

© 2015 American Chemical Society. Firefly luciferase produces light by converting substrate beetle luciferin into the corresponding adenylate that it subsequently oxidizes to oxyluciferin, the emitter of bioluminescence. We have confirmed the generally held notions that the oxidation step is initiated by formation of a carbanion intermediate and that a hydroperoxide (anion) is involved. Additionally, structural evidence is presented that accounts for the delivery of oxygen to the substrate reaction site. Herein, we report key convincing spectroscopic evidence of the participation of superoxide anion in a related chemical model reaction that supports a single electron-transfer pathway for the critical oxidative …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of A Suspended Particle In A Fluid Near A Wall, Jianwei Ju
Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of A Suspended Particle In A Fluid Near A Wall, Jianwei Ju
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
The behavior of the suspended particles in a fluid is an important subject in fluid flow studies. Earlier research works mostly were performed using a continuum treatment on a macro scale level. Recent developments in the field of micro- and nanofluids have led to a renewed interest in molecular hydrodynamics phenomena. The micro hydrodynamic interactions between particles and solid surfaces have been shown to play important roles in the ordering of particles in vibrated fluids, self-organization of biological cells, and collective dynamics of swimming particles[Voth2002, Riedel2005, Hernandez2005], micro-electronic fluid behaviors and also have great prospects in industry applications. Though a …

College Students' Perceptions Of Learner-Centeredness In Their Undergraduate Courses, Jerome Gomez
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
ABSTRACT This study investigated college students perceptions of leaner-centeredness in their undergraduate courses. The goal of this study was to examine what those perceptions were in order to inform future instructional practices that better serve the needs of college students. A demographic questionnaire and the Learner-centered Battery Student Survey (LCBSS) consisting of Total Score, 2 subscale and 11 subscale scores, were used to examine 196 students' perceptions of learner-centered instructional practice. Descriptive statistics were presented, and data were analyzed using t tests, repeated measures ANOVAs, and one-way ANOVAs to examine the relationship and extent to which students perceived their instructors' …
Indentation Behavior Of Multilayer Al/Sic Thin Films, Ryan Jamison
Indentation Behavior Of Multilayer Al/Sic Thin Films, Ryan Jamison
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Nanoindentation is useful for evaluating the mechanical properties, such as hardness and Youngs modulus, of bulk and thin film materials. Multilayer thin films are an important subset of materials in which alternating layers of two or more materials are deposited on a substrate. Fabrication of multilayer films can result in imperfect layer geometry, particularly the flatness and thickness of each layer. Traditional nanoindentation techniques alone cannot provide insight into the microstructure of each layer. The finite element method is used to investigate the behavior of multilayer aluminum/silicon carbide thin film composites with imperfect internal geometry when subjected to various loadings. …

Current gene annotation of the horse genome is largely derived from in silico predictions and cross-species alignments. Only a small number of genes are annotated based on equine EST and mRNA sequences. To expand the number of equine genes annotated from equine experimental evidence, we sequenced mRNA from a pool of forty-three different tissues. From these, we derived the structures of 68,594 transcripts. In addition, we identified 301,829 positions with SNPs or small indels within these transcripts relative to EquCab2. Interestingly, 780 variants extend the open reading frame of the transcript and appear to be small errors in the equine …
Memory, History, And Forgetting In The Sandra Allen Collection Of Papers On Mormonism: A Feminist Rhetorical Historiography Of Institutional Intervention In The Equal Rights Amendment, Valerie Kinsey
English Language and Literature ETDs
This dissertation leverages archival theory, public memory theory, feminist historiography, and rhetorical theory to argue that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reinterpreted the Mormon past to engender identification and foster political action during the Equal Rights Amendment ratification period (1976-1981). Chapter One provides readers with an orientation to the Sandra Allen Collection of Papers on Mormonism and argues that its creator, Sandra Allen, marshaled her understanding of archiving, history writing, and institutional archives to make her history public. Chapter Two: On Memory uses theories of public memory to explain why the Mormon Church built the Nauvoo Monument …
Electrochemical Investigation Of Homogenous Species At An Electrode Interface, Christopher Alan Larsen Iii
Electrochemical Investigation Of Homogenous Species At An Electrode Interface, Christopher Alan Larsen Iii
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
CO2 reduction is a pressing problem worldwide, and one obstacle in the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to more useful C1 products such as methanol and formic acid is the kinetic barrier known as overpotential. The overpotential of rearranging the nuclei in CO2 to accommodate electron transfer can be lowered by pre-bending the CO2 molecule in an adduct-mediated complex. The work presented in Part I utilizes a combination of hard and soft donors on pincer-like ligands to effect the bending of CO2 prior to electrochemical reduction. A large majority of the work consists of using …

Ethylene plays critical roles in plant growth and development, including the regulation of cell expansion, senescence, and the response to biotic and abiotic stresses. Elements of the initial signal transduction pathway have been determined, but we are still defining regulatory mechanisms by which the sensitivity of plants to ethylene is modulated. We report here that members of the ARGOS gene family of Arabidopsis, previously implicated in the regulation of plant growth and biomass, function as negative feedback regulators of ethylene signaling. Expression of all four members of the ARGOS family is induced by ethylene, but this induction is blocked in …
Three-Dimensional Imaging Using A Novel Rotating Point Spread Function Imager, Rakesh Kumar
Three-Dimensional Imaging Using A Novel Rotating Point Spread Function Imager, Rakesh Kumar
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
The capability to achieve three-dimensional (3D) imaging in a single snapshot is a highly coveted goal for the imaging community. To be able to extend the depth-of-field while simultaneously encoding depth in the point spread function (PSF) itself allows an imaging solution which is less time consuming and less data intensive than the inefficient multiscan based conventional 3D imaging. Light-field cameras also achieve 3D imaging in a snapshot, but at the cost of greatly reduced resolution. Phase mask based depth encoding solutions have been proposed by other groups, but they all suffer from a relatively smaller depth-of-field. Recently there has …

Children's family obligations involve assistance and respect that children are expected to provide to immediate and extended family members and reflect beliefs related to family life that may differ across cultural groups. Mothers, fathers and children (N = 1432 families) in 13 cultural groups in 9 countries (China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Philippines, Sweden, Thailand and United States) reported on their expectations regarding children's family obligations and parenting attitudes and behaviours. Within families, mothers and fathers had more concordant expectations regarding children's family obligations than did parents and children. Parenting behaviours that were warmer, less neglectful and more controlling …
The Family Caregiver's Experience: Examining The Positive And Negative Aspects Of Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Using A Stress Process Model, Susan Lynch
Nursing ETDs
Family caregivers significantly contribute to the provision of health care for their family members. This complex care can result in stress that may lead to both positive and negative consequences for the caregiver. Current literature tends to focus on negative consequences such as caregiver burden. Therefore, compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction are proposed as concepts that may better reflect the family caregiving experience. Compassion fatigue is comprised of two components; burnout and secondary traumatic stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the concept of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among family caregivers and to explore the relationship between …

TLR2 promotes NLRP3 inflammasome activation via an early MyD88-IRAK1-dependent pathway that provides a priming signal (signal 1) necessary for activation of the inflammasome by a second potassium-depleting signal (signal 2). Here we show that TLR3 binding to dsRNA promotes post-translational inflammasome activation through intermediate and late TRIF/RIPK1/FADD-dependent pathways. Both pathways require the scaffolding but not the catalytic function of caspase-8 or RIPK1. Only the late pathway requires kinase competent RIPK3 and MLKL function. Mechanistically, FADD/caspase-8 scaffolding function provides a post-translational signal 1 in the intermediate pathway, whereas in the late pathway it helps the oligomerization of RIPK3, which together with …
The Daily Relationship Between Food Insecurity And Medication Adherence Among People Living With Hiv, Jennifer A. Pellowski
The Daily Relationship Between Food Insecurity And Medication Adherence Among People Living With Hiv, Jennifer A. Pellowski
Doctoral Dissertations
Limited access to resources based on social position can significantly impact health behaviors. Previous research on food insecurity and HIV has focused on establishing the relationship between food insecurity and antiretroviral (ARV) medication non-adherence in a variety of social contexts (i.e. resource poor and resource rich environments). However, one main caveat of these studies is the level of analysis. Previous studies have used cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that concentrate on the individual level of analysis. However, these study designs do not allow for a true test of whether ARV medication non-adherence occurs on days with limited access to food.

In the United States, there are more than 35, 000 reported suicides with approximately 1, 800 of them being psychiatric inpatients. Staff perform intermittent or continuous observations in order to prevent such tragedies, but a study of 98 articles over time showed that 20% to 62% of suicides happened while inpatients were on an observation schedule. Reducing the instances of suicides of inpatients is a problem of critical importance to both patients and healthcare providers. In this paper, we introduce SHARE - A Self-Harm Activity Recognition Engine, which attempts to infer self-harming activities from sensing accelerometer data using smart devices …
Rethinking The “Force” Behind “Forced Procreation”: The Case For Giving Women Exclusive Decisional Authority Over Their Cryopreserved Pre-Embryos, Marina Merjan
DePaul Law Review
In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is the process by which a woman’s eggs are extracted, fertilized and frozen, and then reintroduced into her body to develop. IVF has rapidly grown in popularity over the past couple of decades. The law surrounding the technology, however, has been slow to keep pace. The law on “natural” pregnancies, although at times controversial, is nonetheless well settled—if a woman becomes pregnant she has exclusive decisional authority over whether or not to keep the pregnancy. Legally, the father has no right to make this decision with or for her. The major principle underlying the law on natural …

Organized Common Sense: Some Lessons From Judge Jack Weinstein’S Uncommonly Sensible Approach To Expert Evidence, David L. Faigman, Claire Lesikar
DePaul Law Review
Long before the United States Supreme Court decided the landmark case of Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Judge Jack Weinstein had turned his considerable brilliance toward the problem of how best to integrate scientific research into legal decision making. His approach was to bring a sophisticated critical eye to proffered scientific evidence, much in line with Thomas Huxley’s view that “science is … nothing but trained and organized common sense.” However, although Judge Weinstein has invariably brought uncommon common sense to the subject, many lawyers and judges have not. This is likely due largely to the lack of …

The Feminist Jurisprudence Of Judge Jack B. Weinstein, Anita Bernstein
DePaul Law Review
As this Symposium demonstrates, Jack B. Weinstein continues to write decisional law that has edified and stimulated expert readers for many decades. The Weinstein trove also contains feminist jurisprudence. Starting no later than 1974 and into the current millennium, Judge Weinstein has been ameliorating the burdens of gender-oppression. This Article groups decisions published by the Judge into six gender-related themes: women of low income, sentencing female offenders, women’s civil rights, “the woman’s Constitution,” women’s redress for personal injury, and feminism beyond women. It also identifies what is feminist about this extraordinary compendium.

Seasonal Dynamics And Micro-Climatic Preference Of Two Alpine Endemic Hypogean Beetles, Stefano Mammola, Elena Piano, Pier Mauro Giachino, Marco Isaia
International Journal of Speleology
Hypogean beetles generally live in stable environments, characterized by constant temperature and high relative humidity. Changes in the underground microclimatic conditions generally induce local migrations of the beetles through the hypogean environment in search of suitable microhabitats. We studied the seasonal dynamics and the micro-climatic preference of two Alpine endemic hypogean beetles - Sphodropsis ghilianii (Coleoptera, Carabidae) and Dellabeffaella roccae (Coleoptera, Cholevidae) - in the hypogean complex of Pugnetto (Graian Alps, Italy). We surveyed the two species for one year, using baited pitfall traps and measuring temperature and humidity along the two main caves. We used logistic regression mixed models …
The Effects Of Telephone-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management On Inflammation And Symptoms In Myalgic Enchephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Computational Immunology Approach, Emily G. Lattie
Open Access Dissertations
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a multi-systemic and unpredictable medical illness for which effective treatments are lacking. A number of studies have documented immune dysregulation in this patient population, and past research has demonstrated the benefits of stress management training on immune functioning. Due to unpredictable and often severe symptoms, patients with ME/CFS have reported difficulties in attending appointments outside of the home. In consideration of these difficulties, this patient population may particularly benefit from therapeutic services available from one’s own home. This study aimed to examine the impact of telephone-delivered CBSM on inflammation and symptoms in individuals with …
Probiotic Therapy For The Prevention Of Recurrent Spontaneous Preterm Birth, Kali O’Dell
Probiotic Therapy For The Prevention Of Recurrent Spontaneous Preterm Birth, Kali O’Dell
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Preterm birth is the national leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Nearly 500,000 infants are born prematurely each year in the United States and the annual cost of prematurity averages over $26 billion dollars. Despite multiple interventions to reduce infection related prematurity many spontaneous preterm births remain attributed infection and inflammation. We hypothesize that prevention of infection and inflammation related spontaneous preterm birth is possible through enrichment, stabilization, and normalization of the vaginal microbiome. To test this hypothesis we will perform a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial of intravaginal Lactobacillus probiotic in women at high-risk for spontaneous preterm birth. …
