Functional Characterization Of A Cathepsin L In Drosophila Melanogaster, Qian Dong Jul 2015

Functional Characterization Of A Cathepsin L In Drosophila Melanogaster, Qian Dong

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Drosophila dorsal Air Sac Primordium (ASP) is a tracheal tube that invasively grows toward and into the wing imaginal disc. The unfolding of Drosophila wing is a process following eclosion with a cuticular bilayer replacing epithelial cells originally packing the wing. We reasoned that protease functions might be needed for the invasion of ASP into the wing imaginal disc as well as the rearrangement of epithelia cells during wing unfolding. Our study is particularly focused on understanding the role of a Cathepsin L like cysteine protease (CP1) in the development of dorsal ASP and wing development of Drosophila melanogaster. …

Evaluation Of Xanthan/Enzymatically Modified Guar Gum Mixtures In Oil-In-Water Emulsions, Pavan Kumar Chityala Jul 2015

Evaluation Of Xanthan/Enzymatically Modified Guar Gum Mixtures In Oil-In-Water Emulsions, Pavan Kumar Chityala

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Oil-in-water emulsions have wide range of applications in food industry because of their structure-forming properties, and as delivery systems of polyunsaturated fatty acids into foods. The thermodynamic instability of oil and water, and high susceptibility of unsaturated fatty acids to oxidation lead to physical and oxidative stability in oil-in-water emulsions. These instability processes are generally controlled by incorporating proteins and polysaccharides into oil-in-water emulsions. The objective of this study was to evaluate xanthan/enzymatically modified guar (XG/EMG) polysaccharides on the physical and oxidative stability of 2 wt% whey protein stabilized oil-in-water emulsions containing 20% v/v menhaden fish oil. Enzymatic modified guar …

An Apache Hadoop Framework For Large-Scale Peptide Identification, Harinivesh Donepudi Jul 2015

An Apache Hadoop Framework For Large-Scale Peptide Identification, Harinivesh Donepudi

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Peptide identification is an essential step in protein identification, and Peptide Spectrum Match (PSM) data set is huge, which is a time consuming process to work on a single machine. In a typical run of the peptide identification method, PSMs are positioned by a cross correlation, a statistical score, or a likelihood that the match between the trial and hypothetical is correct and unique. This process takes a long time to execute, and there is a demand for an increase in performance to handle large peptide data sets. Development of distributed frameworks are needed to reduce the processing time, but …

Confessions Of An American Ginseng Addict, Addison Davis James Jul 2015

Confessions Of An American Ginseng Addict, Addison Davis James

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Confessions of an American Ginseng Addict uses the Lazy Branch Holler in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky as a setting for a creative nonfiction work, which uses history, confession, remembrances, and digressions to tell the story of a man dealing with loss, mental health issues, environmental sustainability, and the power of ginseng. In the style of Desert Solitaire and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the narrative is a discursive work of raw unadulterated gonzo writing.

Development Of Hyperplastic Polyps Following Argon Plasma Coagulation Of Gastric Antral Vascular Ectasia, Nihar Shah Md, Yana Cavanagh, Dharmesh H. Kaswal, Sohail Shaikh

Gastroenterology

The etiology of gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) syndrome or gastric hyperplastic polyps (HPs) is not fully understood. We report a case of gastric HP arising in a patient treated with argon plasma coagulation (APC) for GAVE syndrome. Despite unclear etiologic progression, this and previously reported cases suggest a temporal relationship between the treatment of GAVE and HP. A 68-year-old male with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure and diabetes type II who initially presented with symptomatic anemia 2 weeks after starting aspirin and clopidogrel therapy. Diagnostic esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) demonstrated diffuse GAVE. He was treated with 5 …

An Unusual Initial Presentation Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma As A Sellar Mass, Nihar Shah Md, Yana Cavanagh, Hamid Shaaban, Beth Stein, Sohail N. Shaikh, Dharmesh H. Kaswala, Walid Baddoura

Gastroenterology

Sellar masses are frequently adenomatous pituitary tumors. Metastatic disease is unusual, often mimicking the presentations of adenomas. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary hepatic malignancy but unusual to have a pituitary metastasis (PM). A 65-year-old man presented with headache, diplopia, ptosis, decreased vision in the right eye and unintentional weight loss of 32lbs. Preliminary out-patient work-up revealed a mass in the pituitary region. Cranial imaging showed 3.1 cm × 3.2 cm × 4.4 cm lesion. Abdominal imaging (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) demonstrated a lobulated, nodular and heterogeneous right lobe of the liver. Trans-sphenoidal resection of the …

Interdisciplinary Modeling For Water-Related Issues Graduate Course, Laurel Saito, Alexander Fernald, Timothy Link Jul 2015

Interdisciplinary Modeling For Water-Related Issues Graduate Course, Laurel Saito, Alexander Fernald, Timothy Link

All ECSTATIC Materials

The science and management of aquatic ecosystems is inherently interdisciplinary, with issues associated with hydrology, atmospheric science, water quality, geochemistry, sociology, economics, environmental science, and ecology. Addressing water resources issues in any one discipline invariably involves effects that concern other disciplines, and attempts to address one issue often have consequences that exacerbate existing issues or concerns, or create new ones (Jørgensen et al. 1992; Lackey et al. 1975; Straskraba 1994) due to the strongly interactive nature of key processes (Christensen et al. 1996). Thus, research and management of aquatic ecosystems must be interdisciplinary to be most effective, but such truly …

Welcome To The Brave New World: Crispr Mediated Genome Editing‐Pathway To Designer Babies?, Hemayet Ullah Jul 2015

Welcome To The Brave New World: Crispr Mediated Genome Editing‐Pathway To Designer Babies?, Hemayet Ullah

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

The world literature circle was abuzz in 1932 when Aldous Huxley published his seminal book “Brave New World”. He painted the efforts of a totalitarian state to lab manufacture “sub‐human” people who would be capable of work but not of independent thought. Though the plot was set almost 500 years in the future, the author may not have envisioned that within a century of his writing scientists would embark on developing technologies that could potentially set the road for ʺdesigner babiesʺ in the future. The recent availability of the simple, yet highlyeffective, CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) technology …

Extinction In A Hyperdiverse Endemic Hawaiian Land Snail Family And Implications For The Underestimation Of Invertebrate Extinction, Claire Régnier, Philippe Bouchet, Kenneth Hayes, Norine Yeung, Carl Christensen, Daniel Chung, Benoit Fontaine, Robert Cowie

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List includes 832 species listed as extinct since 1600, a minuscule fraction of total biodiversity. This extinction rate is of the same order of magnitude as the background rate and has been used to downplay the biodiversity crisis. Invertebrates comprise 99% of biodiversity, yet the status of a negligible number has been assessed. We assessed extinction in the Hawaiian land snail family Amastridae (325 species, IUCN lists 33 as extinct). We did not use the stringent IUCN criteria, by which most invertebrates would be considered data deficient, but a more realistic …

Leaving The “Big Deal” … Five Years Later, Jonathan Nabe, David Fowler Jul 2015

Leaving The “Big Deal” … Five Years Later, Jonathan Nabe, David Fowler

Articles

Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) and the University of Oregon each withdrew from several Big Deals with major commercial journal publishers from 2008 to 2010. Analysis of the impact of these decisions was originally conducted and reported in 2011 and 2012. This article provides updated analysis based on interlibrary loan statistics, financial savings, and impact on the collections. Results show that interlibrary loan of lost content still represents a small fraction of prior use, savings have been considerable, and the libraries have been able to address other needs in their collections because of the decision to withdraw.

Biplanar Fluoroscopic Analysis Of In Vivo Hindfoot Kinematics During Ambulation, Janelle Ann Cross Jul 2015

Biplanar Fluoroscopic Analysis Of In Vivo Hindfoot Kinematics During Ambulation, Janelle Ann Cross

Dissertations (1934 -)

The overall goal of this project was to develop and validate a biplanar fluoroscopic system and integrated software to assess hindfoot kinematics. Understanding the motion of the foot and ankle joints may lead to improved treatment methods in persons with foot and ankle pathologies. During gait analysis, skin markers are placed on the lower extremities, which are defined as four rigid-body segments with three joints representing the hip, knee and ankle. This method introduces gross assumptions on the foot and severely limits the analysis of in depth foot mechanics. Multi-segmental models have been developed, but are susceptible to skin motion …

Soybean Seed Quality And Vigor: Influencing Factors, Measurement, And Pathogen Characterization, Kimberly Ann Cochran Jul 2015

Soybean Seed Quality And Vigor: Influencing Factors, Measurement, And Pathogen Characterization, Kimberly Ann Cochran

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

High seed vigor (SV), or the ability of seed to germinate and grow in a stressful environment is important, as many field emergence conditions are stressful for germination. Soybean SV can be affected by cultivar, seed storage environment conditions, the growing environment during seed development, crop management practices such as foliar fungicide applications, pathogens, and other factors. To assess the effects of some of these factors on soybean, the objectives of this work were to determine 1. the effect of cultivar and foliar azoxystrobin application on soybean yield, germination, vigor, microflora, and their relationships under harvest delay conditions; 2. if …

Investigations Of Ethylene And Ethylene Inhibition, Ball Lie, And Synthetic Turf Color, William Daniel Strunk

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is comprised of several studies over three unrelated areas of focus. Chapters two and three investigate the role of the hormone ethylene on growth of creeping bentgrass through (1) exposure of turf to exogenous ethylene and (2) testing an ethylene inhibiting compound for use to alleviate stress related injury. Previous research demonstrated a correlation of stress injury and ethylene and lessening of injury through ethylene inhibition, but little work has been conducted evaluating the direct effects of ethylene. These studies failed to confirm findings in previous research. Chapters four and five aim to illustrate the impact of turfgrass …

Objectively Measuring The Effects Of Sleep On Reading Comprehension And Sustained Selective Attention, Jennifer L. Thibodeaux Jul 2015

Objectively Measuring The Effects Of Sleep On Reading Comprehension And Sustained Selective Attention, Jennifer L. Thibodeaux

Doctoral Dissertations

The overall performance of a university is measured by retention rates of students. Because individuals who achieve lower grade point averages are at a higher risk of failing or dropping out of college, the academic performance of undergraduates should be the target of concern to maintain good retention rates. Academic performance, which is associated with attention and reading comprehension abilities, is affected by the sleep behavior of students. In regards to college students and sleep, research has indicated that college students demonstrate habitually poor sleep habits. Poor sleep habits have been linked to impaired attention and concentration abilities, but the …

Regulation Of Thyroid Hormone-Induced Development In Vivo By Thyroid Hormone Transporters And Cytosolic Binding Proteins, Jinyoung Choi, Christine L. Moskalik, Allison Ng, Stephen F. Matter, Daniel R. Buchholz Jul 2015

Regulation Of Thyroid Hormone-Induced Development In Vivo By Thyroid Hormone Transporters And Cytosolic Binding Proteins, Jinyoung Choi, Christine L. Moskalik, Allison Ng, Stephen F. Matter, Daniel R. Buchholz

Publications & Research

Differential tissue sensitivity/responsivity to hormones can explain developmental asynchrony among hormone-dependent events despite equivalent exposure of each tissue to circulating hormone levels. A dramatic vertebrate example is during frog metamorphosis, where transformation of the hind limb, brain, intestine, liver, and tail are completely dependent on thyroid hormone (TH) but occurs asynchronously during development. TH transporters (THTs) and cytosolic TH binding proteins (CTHBPs) have been proposed to affect the timing of tissue transformation based on expression profiles and in vitro studies, but they have not been previously tested in vivo. We used a combination of expression pattern, relative expression level, …

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Opisthorchis viverrini is distinct among helminth infections as it drives a chronic inflammatory response in the intrahepatic bile duct that progresses from advanced periductal fibrosis (APF) to cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). Extensive research shows that oxidative stress (OS) plays a critical role in the transition from chronic O. viverrini infection to CCA. OS also results in the excision of a modified DNA lesion (8-oxodG) into urine, the levels of which can be detected by immunoassay. Herein, we measured concentrations of urine 8-oxodG by immunoassay from the following four groups in the Khon Kaen Cancer Cohort study: (1) O. viverrini negative individuals, (2) …

Recessive Mutations In Polr1c Cause A Leukodystrophy By Impairing Biogenesis Of Rna Polymerase Iii, Isabelle Thiffault, Nicole I. Wolf, Diane Forget, Kether Guerrero, Adeline Vanderver, Cas Simons, Ryan J. Taft, +17 Additional Authors Jul 2015

Recessive Mutations In Polr1c Cause A Leukodystrophy By Impairing Biogenesis Of Rna Polymerase Iii, Isabelle Thiffault, Nicole I. Wolf, Diane Forget, Kether Guerrero, Adeline Vanderver, Cas Simons, Ryan J. Taft, +17 Additional Authors

Neurology Faculty Publications

A small proportion of 4H (Hypomyelination, Hypodontia and Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism) or RNA polymerase III (POLR3)-related leukodystrophy cases are negative for mutations in the previously identified causative genes POLR3A and POLR3B. Here we report eight of these cases carrying recessive mutations in POLR1C, a gene encoding a shared POLR1 and POLR3 subunit, also mutated in some Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) cases. Using shotgun proteomics and ChIP sequencing, we demonstrate that leukodystrophy-causative mutations, but not TCS mutations, in POLR1C impair assembly and nuclear import of POLR3, but not POLR1, leading to decreased binding to POLR3 target genes. This study is …

How Do U.S. And Chinese Biology Students Compare In Explaining Energy Consumption Issues?, Hui Jin, Hayat Hokayem, Sasha Wang, Xin Wei Jul 2015

How Do U.S. And Chinese Biology Students Compare In Explaining Energy Consumption Issues?, Hui Jin, Hayat Hokayem, Sasha Wang, Xin Wei

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This qualitative study investigates how biology majors explain energy consumption issues. In particular, we focus on two energy consumption activities that account for about two-thirds of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2011: burning fossil fuels for transportation and using electricity. We conducted in-depth clinical interviews with twenty U.S. students and twenty Chinese students. We compared these two groups of students in terms of two aspects of explanation: 1) naming scientific terms in the explanation, and 2) explaining an energy consumption issue. Regarding naming, we examined the frequency of naming different terms of scientific concepts and principles in students’ explanations. Regarding …

A Non-Invasive Fluorescence-Based Oxygen Sensor And Platform For Studying Cell Responses To Metabolic Agents In Real-Time, Koutilya Reddy Buchapudi

Doctoral Dissertations

A fluorescence-based sensor in a transverse flow/stop measurement platform has been developed to determine real-time changes in oxygen consumption rates for cell metabolic studies. The oxygen sensitive fluorophore platinum octaethylporphyrin was embedded in a cellulose acetate matrix and affixed to a fiber optic bundle, which provided for transmission of the excitation and emission wavelengths of the film. The fiber optic bundle was sealed in a sensor head that can be used in standard 24-well plates common to research labs. The utility of the sensor and sensing platform were determined by measuring the changes in oxygen consumption rates of Candida albicans …
