A Ph Switchable Responsive Surface For The Trapping And Release Of A Hydrophobic Substance, Ali Esmail Karim Jul 2015

A Ph Switchable Responsive Surface For The Trapping And Release Of A Hydrophobic Substance, Ali Esmail Karim

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Solid phase extraction is one of the most widely used techniques to trap and release compounds in a solution. A hydrophobic substance will stick efficiently to a hydrophobic surface (the “like dissolves like” principle). With an introduced response (i.e. pH change), a responsive surface can change from hydrophobic to hydrophilic, weakening the hydrophobic substance’s attraction and thus facilitate in an easy removal. A surface has been prepared having a terminal anthranilic acid (AA) moiety on silica gel particles, microscope slides, and TLC plates in three steps. First, a vinyl group was attached to the surface. Then, this vinyl group was …

Son Preference, Fertility Decline And Non-Missing Girls Of Turkey, Onur Altindag Jul 2015

Son Preference, Fertility Decline And Non-Missing Girls Of Turkey, Onur Altindag

Economics Working Papers

Couples in Turkey exhibit son preference through son-biased differential stopping behavior that does not cause a sex ratio imbalance in the population. Demand for sons leads to lower (higher) ratios of boys to girls in large (small) families. Girls are born earlier than their male siblings. Son-biased fertility behavior is persistent in response to decline in fertility over time and across households with parents from different backgrounds. Parents use contraceptive methods to halt fertility following a male birth. The sibling sex composition is associated with gender disparities in health. Among children who were born in the third parity or later, …

Great Lake Island Biogeography Of Plethodon Cinereus: Effect Of Island Elevation On Color Polymorphism, Cameron N. Eddy Jul 2015

Great Lake Island Biogeography Of Plethodon Cinereus: Effect Of Island Elevation On Color Polymorphism, Cameron N. Eddy

Masters Theses

Islands have long fascinated ecologists and evolutionary biologists because they provide replicated systems with which to test hypotheses regarding evolutionary and ecological theory. Because islands are relatively simple systems, they enable researchers to isolate specific factors responsible for observed phenomena. Many current questions in ecology and evolutionary biology have been addressed in island systems. For example, factors involved in the genetic divergence of populations are easier to discern in island populations because confounding effects of gene flow from adjacent populations are limited. This study focuses on isolated island populations of the color polymorphic Eastern Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) …

This paper outlines the benefits of using the framework for an ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM) for dealing with the inevitable yet unclear impacts of climate change and ocean acidification on coastal fisheries. With a focus on the Asia-Pacific region, it summarizes the projected biological and socio-economic effects of increased emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) for coastal fisheries and illustrates how all the important dimensions of climate change and ocean acidification can be integrated into the steps involved in the EAFM planning process. The activities required to harness the full potential of an EAFM as an adaptation to …

Unowned Cat Management In The State Of Ohio: Elements Of Best Practice In Public-Private Collaborative Efforts, Daniel D. Spehar Jul 2015

Unowned Cat Management In The State Of Ohio: Elements Of Best Practice In Public-Private Collaborative Efforts, Daniel D. Spehar

HSU STUDENT THESES AND CAPSTONE PROJECTS

A contentious debate over the management of free-roaming cat populations is ongoing. Nevertheless, disparate groups of stakeholders share a common goal of fewer community cats. Unowned cat management typically necessitates a choice between utilization of lethal or non-lethal measures. Research has indicated strong public support for employment of non-lethal methods, like trap-neuter-return (TNR). Collaborative TNR programs are experiencing success in a growing number of communities. The purpose of this exploratory study was to identify new or underutilized public-private collaborative practices, and associated elemental factors, that have the potential to be used as—or incorporated into—templates of best practice for the non-lethal …

Divine Discrimination: Gender Harassment And Christian Justification, Abigail L. Muldoon

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Gender harassment (i.e., derogatory comments or actions that express stereotypical attitudes regarding someone’s gender) is often times the most prominent form of sex-based harassment directed towards women in both workplace and academic settings. This study explored the moderating effect of Christian attribution on gender harassment predicting college adjustment for college women using a mixed-methods approach rooted in feminist theoretical perspectives. Two hundred twenty-three female-identified students attending a Catholic university in a large, urban city completed the Gender Experiences Questionnaire (GEQ), a measure designed to capture instances of sexuality policing, indicated whether they believed reported harassment was motivated by the Christian/Catholic …

Becoming "Smart" About Relationship Building: Foster Care Youth And The Use Of Technology, Ramona Denby Brinson, Efren Gomez, Keith A. Alford

Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs

Key Findings:

Youth participants reported satisfaction with services and positive feelings about the smartphone.

The youth participants felt that the smartphone gave them a “voice” and control over the people with whom they wanted to talk.

Certain phone restrictions developed by project leadership were unenforceable.

Youth had certain expectations about the phone and its use but when the phone did not work or was “locked” (e.g., for data overuse) it created friction between the youth and their service provider.

Service-providers report that the phones help to create a sense of normalcy for the youth. Youth “were able to be normal …

Residue-Specific Structures And Membrane Locations Of Ph-Low Insertion Peptide By Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Nicolas S. Shu, Michael S. Chung, Lan L. Yao, Ming An, Wei Qiang

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

The pH-low insertion peptide (pHLIP) binds to a membrane at pH 7.4 unstructured but folds across the bilayer as a transmembrane helix at pH similar to 6. Despite their promising applications as imaging probes and drug carriers that target cancer cells for cytoplasmic cargo delivery, the mechanism of pH modulation on pHLIP-membrane interactions has not been completely understood. Here, we show the first study on membrane-associated pHLIP using solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Data on residue-specific conformation and membrane location describe pHLIP in various surface-bound and membrane-inserted states at pH 7.4, 6.4 and 5.3. The critical membrane-adsorbed state is more complex than …

The Cell Secretome, A Mediator Of Cell-To-Cell Communication, Joseph Zullo, Kei Matsumoto, Sandhya Xavier, Brian Ratliff, Michael S. Goligorsky

NYMC Faculty Publications

We are witnessing the emergence of a novel type of biological regulation, namely, the communication between cells via their secreted substances, the secretome. This brief overview is based on the available published data and our own experience. We discuss three vignettes illustrating the importance of communication via the secretome: (1) the secretome of stem cells and its effects in sepsis and systemic inflammatory response; (2) the profibrotic secretomes partially responsible for development of fibrotic complications; and (3) the contribution of senescence-associated secretory products to the propagation of the senescence phenotype. Considering the richness of secretomes of different cells under diverse …

Fetal, Neonatal, Infant, And Child International Growth Standards: An Unprecedented Opportunity For An Integrated Approach To Assess Growth And Development., Cutberto Garza

Global Health Faculty Publications

The recent publication of fetal growth and gestational age-specific growth standards by the International Fetal and Newborn Growth Consortium for the 21st Century Project and the previous publication by the WHO of infant and young child growth standards based on the WHO Multicentre Growth Reference Study enable evaluations of growth from ∼9 wk gestation to 5 y. The most important features of these projects are the prescriptive approach used for subject selection and the rigorous testing of the assertion that growth is very similar among geographically and ethnically diverse nonisolated populations when health, nutrition, and other care needs are met …

Poster Sessions

Use of biological control offers a cost effective and environmentally safe method for controlling plant diseases. Biocontrol agents that can colonize roots and live endophytically within plant tissue should allow for effective disease control. The goal of this research was to develop protocols to isolate putative Streptomyces species from potato stem and tuber tissue due to their ability to produce inhibitory compounds which could potentially reduce diseases caused by Streptomyces scabies. Endophyte isolation from Solanum tuberosum (potato) plants (stem and tuber tissues) that were grown in a biocontrol field trial were the focus of this study. Several surface …

Gold Nanoparticle Enhancements In Electroporation Mediated Dna And Rna Therapeutics, Shuyan Huang

Doctoral Dissertations

Nonviral gene delivery methods have been explored as the replacement of viral systems for their low toxicity and immunogenicity. However, they have yet to reach levels competitive to their viral counterparts. Electroporation figured prominently as an effective nonviral gene delivery approach for its balance on the transfection efficiency and cell viability, no restrictions of probe or cell type, and operation simplicity. The commercial electroporation systems have been widely adopted in the past two decades but still carry drawbacks associated with the high applied electric voltage, unsatisfied delivery efficiency, and/or low cell viability. What we did was to improve electroporation performance …
