Enhanced Quadrupole Interaction By Co And Counter-Propagating Hermite-Gaussian Beams, S. Al-Awfi Jul 2015

Enhanced Quadrupole Interaction By Co And Counter-Propagating Hermite-Gaussian Beams, S. Al-Awfi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Effective optical quadrupole traps and a planar array of optical wells based on the interference of two optical beams are proposed. Due to this interference a sort of variety distributions are created with intensity maxima and minima that can be used to trap atoms that have transition frequencies appropriately detuned from the frequency w of the light. This technique assists to avoid some undesirable effects of single beam interaction such as destabilizing dissipative force as well as it enhances the magnitude of quadrupole force. In particular, the mutual coupling of two co and counter-propagating Hermite-Gaussian light beams is presented. Both …

Stability Analysis And Optimal Control Of A Malaria Model With Larvivorous Fish As Biological Control Agent, S. Athithan, Mini Ghosh Jul 2015

Stability Analysis And Optimal Control Of A Malaria Model With Larvivorous Fish As Biological Control Agent, S. Athithan, Mini Ghosh

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper presents a non-linear mathematical model of malaria by considering the human reservoir and larvivorous fishes. The different equilibria of the model are computed and stability of these equilibria is investigated in-detail. Also, the basic reproduction number R0 of the model is computed and we observe that the model exhibits backward bifurcation for some set of parameters implying the existence of multiple endemic equilibria for R0 < 1. This existence of multiple endemic equilibria emphasizes the fact that R0 < 1 is not sufficient to eradicate the disease from the population and the need is to lower R0 much below one to make the disease-free equilibrium to be globally stable. The numerical simulation is performed to support analytical findings and the presented results show meaningful agreement. Additionally, the model is extended to incorporate optimal control by introducing the ‘insecticide control’ to control the mosquito population and Pontryagin’s maximum principle[1] is used to analyze the optimal control model. Here too the numerical simulation is performed to demonstrate the effect of optimal control.

Modeling Of Adaptive Cyber Physical Systems Using Aspect-Oriented Approach, Zhilin Qian, Huiqun Yu, Guisheng Fan Jul 2015

Modeling Of Adaptive Cyber Physical Systems Using Aspect-Oriented Approach, Zhilin Qian, Huiqun Yu, Guisheng Fan

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper proposes an aspect-oriented approach to modeling adaptive cyber physical system (CPS) using Petri nets. The core concerns of CPSs are described as device model and task model, and dynamic variations of system behaviors or environment conditions are extracted as crosscutting concerns. The models of runtime inspection as well as device adaptation and task adaptation are designed as aspects nets. For the device adaptation strategy, fault types are analyzed and the control loop concept is integrated to form the adaptation aspect model. For the task adaptation, a rescheduling method using PSO-Pareto algorithm to find the best solution of the …

The Production Of Alpha/Beta And Gamma/Delta Double Negative (Dn) T-Cells And Their Role In The Maintenance Of Pregnancy, John C. Chapman, Fae M. Chapman, Sandra D. Michael

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The ability of the thymus gland to convert bone marrow-derived progenitor cells into single positive (SP) T-cells is well known. In this review we present evidence that the thymus, in addition to producing SP T-cells, also has a pathway for the production of double negative (DN) T-cells. The existence of this pathway was noted during our examination of relevant literature to determine the cause of sex steroid-induced thymocyte loss. In conducting this search our objective was to answer the question of whether thymocyte loss is the end product of a typical interaction between the reproductive and immune systems, or evidence …

Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase Null Mice Exhibit Female And Male Differences In Regulation Of Vascular Homeostasis, Luca Vanella, Martina Canestraro, Craig R. Lee, Jian Cao, Darryl C. Zeldin, Michal L. Schwartzman, Nader G. Abraham

NYMC Faculty Publications

Increased CYP epoxygenase activity and consequently up regulation of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) levels provides protection against metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. Conversion of arachidonic acid epoxides to diols by soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) diminishes the beneficial cardiovascular properties of these epoxyeicosanoids. We therefore examined the possible biochemical consequences of sEH deletion on vascular responses in male and female mice. Through the use of the sEH KO mouse, we provide evidence of differences in the compensatory response in the balance between nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), EETs and the vasoconstrictor 20-HETE in male and female KO mice. Serum levels of …

Bright Or Dark, Or Virtues And Vices? A Reexamination Of The Big Five And Job Performance, Christopher M. Castille Jul 2015

Bright Or Dark, Or Virtues And Vices? A Reexamination Of The Big Five And Job Performance, Christopher M. Castille

Doctoral Dissertations

Personality research in industrial/organizational psychology has been dominated by the description of personality traits and outcomes as either bright or dark. Unfortunately, research has shown that bright traits have dark outcomes and vice versa, suggesting that a paradox is plaguing the literature. To resolve this paradox, I propose that a different heuristic stemming from positive psychology be utilized: virtues and vices. Virtues refer to exercises of human excellence while vices refer to actions of human failure. Drawing on the virtue ethics concept of the Aristotelian mean, dark traits are viewed as extreme or elevated levels of bright personality traits, allowing …

The Medical Liability Exemption: A Path To Affordable Pharmaceuticals, Carrie E. Rosato Jul 2015

The Medical Liability Exemption: A Path To Affordable Pharmaceuticals, Carrie E. Rosato

Florida State University Law Review

Patent monopolies are tolerated because we believe they promote progress that benefits society. What should be done when these monopolies actually increase human suffering? Drug prices in America are fifty to eighty percent higher than the rest of the world, meaning many cannot afford drugs that will improve or even save their lives. When striking a balance between the interests of the patent holder and that of the public, it is important to bear in mind that the rewards granted to patentees are secondary to the public benefit derived from their labors. The ideal solution would come from Congress creating …

Implications Of Underlying Pathophysiology Of Osteomyelitis In Diabetics For Nursing Care, Danielle Spencer Jul 2015

Implications Of Underlying Pathophysiology Of Osteomyelitis In Diabetics For Nursing Care, Danielle Spencer

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone caused by either bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses or mycobacteria (McCance, et. al., 2014). The infection can enter bone either through an outside source or through the blood from a blood borne infection (McCance, et. al., 2014). The most common bacteria involved with osteomyelitis is Staphylococcus aureus (Hatzenbuehler & Pulling, 2011, p. 1027). Recently, at Dublin Methodist Hospital there has been an increase in the number of osteomyelitis cases in chronic uncontrolled diabetic patients requiring below the knee amputations. Two of the cases specifically were linked to chronic diabetic foot ulcers. Each of these …

The Pathology Of Heart Failure, Kevin Ahman Jul 2015

The Pathology Of Heart Failure, Kevin Ahman

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

The topic I have chosen to research is heart failure. I have chosen this topic because I have treated many patients in the ICU with this condition, and find it an interesting pathology. Heart failure affects a significant portion of the patient population, and the rates are increasing. 5.1 million Americans ≥20 years of age have heart failure, projections show that by 2030, the prevalence of HF will increase 25% from 2013 estimates. At 40 years of age, the lifetime risk of developing HF for both men and women is 1 in 5. At 80 years of age, remaining lifetime …

Assessment Of Validity And Response Bias In Neuropsychiatric Evaluations, Dustin Wygant, Robert Phillip Granacher Jul 2015

Assessment Of Validity And Response Bias In Neuropsychiatric Evaluations, Dustin Wygant, Robert Phillip Granacher

Psychology Faculty and Staff Research

BACKGROUND: Forensic neuropsychiatric assessment requires thorough consideration of malingering and response bias. Neuropsychiatric evaluations are complicated due to the multiple domains in which symptoms and impairment present. Moreover, symptom exaggeration in these evaluations can also present along various symptom domains (e.g., psychological, neurocognitive, somatic). Consequently, steps must be taken to ensure adequate coverage of response bias across all three domains of function.

PURPOSE: The following article reviews the conceptualization of malingering in neuropsychiatric settings, as well as various approaches and measures that can be helpful in the assessment of malingering and response bias.

CONCLUSIONS: Forensic neuropsychiatric assessment requires thorough consideration …
