An Empirical And Theoretical Comparison Of The Socio-Ecological Behaviors Of Captive Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes), Bonobos (Pan Paniscus), And Western Lowland Gorillas (Gorilla Gorilla): Social Tolerance And Behavioral Responses To Changes In Food Quality And Distribution, Scott C. Milne

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Chimpanzees and gorillas are sympatric in most of their range in Central Africa, however, bonobos do not overlap with either of the other two species. This difference has been hypothesized to be the main factor leading to the socio-ecological traits of each species. Access to, and competition for, terrestrial herbaceous vegetation (THV) in each of the three species in thought to be linked to the social relationships and female-female bonds of each species. This study sought to provide a direct comparison of the social relationships of each of the three African Great Apes in captivity in order to elucidate similarities …

G.H. Hardy: Mathematical Biologist, Hannah Elizabeth Christenson, Stephan Ramon Garcia Jul 2015

G.H. Hardy: Mathematical Biologist, Hannah Elizabeth Christenson, Stephan Ramon Garcia

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Godfrey Harold Hardy (1877-1947), the magnificent analyst who “discovered” the enigmatic Ramanujan and penned A Mathematician’s Apology, is most widely known outside of mathematics for his work in genetics. How did Hardy, described by his colleague C.P. Snow as “the purest of the pure,” become one of the founders of modern genetics? We explore this question in light of Hardy's own ideas about pure and elegant mathematics.

Femininities And Masculinities In Brazilian Women's Football: Resistance And Compliance, Jorge Knijnik Jul 2015

Femininities And Masculinities In Brazilian Women's Football: Resistance And Compliance, Jorge Knijnik

Journal of International Women's Studies

Football is not only one of the major cultural manifestations of Brazilian society; it is also the pinnacle of the country’s hegemonic masculinity, a bastion into which women should not be allowed. Despite some progress and several international sporting successes achieved over the last few decades, Brazilian female footballers still endure extreme gender prejudice when playing football in Brazil. Gender discrimination blocks their access to minimal conditions of football training and playing at recreational and competitive levels. This paper aims to discuss gender issues that pervade Brazilian football. The paper applies a multifaceted theoretical background, combining a psychoanalytical view of …

Mammalian distributions are constantly changing. Some distributional shifts reflect habitat change, climate change, and human transplantations; thus, such shifts are due to actual expansions or contractions of populations. However, other species ranges that appear to shift as the result of new records being added to known distributional limits actually might reflect populations that previously were undetected due to a lack of past surveys or species that are difficult to detect. In 2013, multiple techniques were employed to document mammalian distributional records in southwestern Kansas and northwestern Oklahoma. We discovered three new county records in Morton County, Kansas (Crawford’s Desert Shrew, …

Medication Non-Adherence In Community Dwelling Older Adults With Dementia: An Educational Intervention For Family Caregivers, Nika Renee George

Dissertations

Older adults with neurocognitive disorders are at high risk for medication non-adherence, while being vulnerable to great injury from regimen deviations. Informal caregivers often aid in healthcare management for these individuals. The current study compared the efficacy of two online health education interventions designed to increase caregiver health related knowledge for use with care recipients. Women (N=35) assisting a cognitively impaired older person with medications were randomly assigned to one of two online health education conditions (1) written materials and narrative vignettes depicting actors encountering common medication challenges or (2) written materials and didactic video clips of information from medical …

Neural Correlates Of Rumination In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Before And After Cognitive Processing Therapy, Katherine Ruth Buchholz Jul 2015

Neural Correlates Of Rumination In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Before And After Cognitive Processing Therapy, Katherine Ruth Buchholz

Dissertations

The utilization of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques to examine biomarkers and neural activity patterns related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has provided a way to investigate mechanisms that underlie the development, maintenance, and recovery from PTSD. Studying the neural correlates of individual differences related to transdiagnostic factors has the potential to provide clinically relevant information beyond that of diagnostic categories. Rumination is one such factor. Rumination, defined as repetitive, negative, self-focused thinking is considered to be a transdiagnostic factor that is associated with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. In individuals with PTSD, rumination serves as a cognitive avoidance factor …

Phytochrome Diversity In Green Plants And The Origin Of Canonical Plant Phytochromes, Fay Wei Li, Michael Melkonian, Carl J. Rothfels, Juan Carlos Villarreal, Dennis W. Stevenson, Sean W. Graham, Gane Ka Shu Wong, Kathleen M. Pryer, Sarah Mathews

Faculty Publications

© 2015 Macmillan Publishers Limited. All rights reserved. Phytochromes are red/far-red photoreceptors that play essential roles in diverse plant morphogenetic and physiological responses to light. Despite their functional significance, phytochrome diversity and evolution across photosynthetic eukaryotes remain poorly understood. Using newly available transcriptomic and genomic data we show that canonical plant phytochromes originated in a common ancestor of streptophytes (charophyte algae and land plants). Phytochromes in charophyte algae are structurally diverse, including canonical and non-canonical forms, whereas in land plants, phytochrome structure is highly conserved. Liverworts, hornworts and Selaginella apparently possess a single phytochrome, whereas independent gene duplications occurred within …

Quantum Mechanics, Strong Emergence And Ontological Non-Reducibility, Rodolfo Gambini, Lucía Lewowicz, Jorge Pullin Jul 2015

Quantum Mechanics, Strong Emergence And Ontological Non-Reducibility, Rodolfo Gambini, Lucía Lewowicz, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We show that a new interpretation of quantum mechanics, in which the notion of event is defined without reference to measurement or observers, allows to construct a quantum general ontology based on systems, states and events. Unlike the Copenhagen interpretation, it does not resort to elements of a classical ontology. The quantum ontology in turn allows us to recognize that a typical behavior of quantum systems exhibits strong emergence and ontological non-reducibility. Such phenomena are not exceptional but natural, and are rooted in the basic mathematical structure of quantum mechanics.

Publications and Research

Background Carotenoid compounds play essential roles in plants such as protecting the photosynthetic apparatus and in hormone signalling. Coloured carotenoids provide yellow, orange and red colour to plant tissues, as well as offering nutritional benefit to humans and animals. The enzyme phytoene synthase (PSY) catalyses the first committed step of the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway and has been associated with control of pathway flux. We characterised four PSY genes found in the apple genome to further understand their involvement in fruit carotenoid accumulation. Results The apple PSY gene family, containing six members, was predicted to have three functional members, PSY1, PSY2, …

Dissecting And Modeling A Transcriptional Dynamics During Stochastic Phase Of Somatic Reprogramming, Kyung Min Chung Jul 2015

Dissecting And Modeling A Transcriptional Dynamics During Stochastic Phase Of Somatic Reprogramming, Kyung Min Chung

Doctoral Dissertations

Forced ectopic expression of the transcription factors OCT4, SOX2, KLF4, and c-MYC (OSKM) can directly reprogram various somatic cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). These reprogrammed cells offer great potential as a source for patient-matched regenerative therapies thanks to their striking molecular and phenotypic similarity to embryonic stem cells. However, despite years of research, this process remains highly inefficient and produces considerable cellular heterogeneity. Moreover, long latency has stalled the effort to understand the mechanisms and molecular changes underlying the reprogramming process. To improve and facilitate the development of efficient and rapid reprogramming strategies, a clear understanding of fundamental …

Attracting Songbirds With Conspecific Playback: A Community Approach, Leanna N. Dejong, Samuel D. Cowell, Thuy Nhi Nguyen, Darren S. Proppe

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The presence of conspecifics is an indicator of good habitat for a number of songbird species; a cue positively associated with territory selection. Thus, conspecific playback may be a cost-effective tool for attracting songbirds to particular, preselected sites of high-quality habitat. Previous studies have used conspecific playback to encourage the establishment of a single species; however, few have researched the potential for the simultaneous attraction of multiple species. Furthermore, empirical studies on the effect of song playback for nonfocal species are sparse. We investigated whether 6 migratory songbird species are more likely to establish nesting territories in response to multispecies …

Numerical Chromosomal Instability Mediates Susceptibility To Radiation Treatment, Samuel F. Bakhoum, Lilian Kabeche, Matthew D. Wood, Christopher D. Laucius Jul 2015

Numerical Chromosomal Instability Mediates Susceptibility To Radiation Treatment, Samuel F. Bakhoum, Lilian Kabeche, Matthew D. Wood, Christopher D. Laucius

Dartmouth Scholarship

The exquisite sensitivity of mitotic cancer cells to ionizing radiation (IR) underlies an important rationale for the widely used fractionated radiation therapy. However, the mechanism for this cell cycle-dependent vulnerability is unknown. Here we show that treatment with IR leads to mitotic chromosome segregation errors in vivo and long-lasting aneuploidy in tumour-derived cell lines. These mitotic errors generate an abundance of micronuclei that predispose chromosomes to subsequent catastrophic pulverization thereby independently amplifying radiation-induced genome damage. Experimentally suppressing whole-chromosome missegregation reduces downstream chromosomal defects and significantly increases the viability of irradiated mitotic cells. Further, orthotopically transplanted human glioblastoma tumours in which …

Inversion Effects Reveal Dissociations In Facial Expression Of Emotion, Gender, And Object Processing, Pamela M. Pallett, Ming Meng Jul 2015

Inversion Effects Reveal Dissociations In Facial Expression Of Emotion, Gender, And Object Processing, Pamela M. Pallett, Ming Meng

Dartmouth Scholarship

To distinguish between high-level visual processing mechanisms, the degree to which holistic processing is involved in facial identity, facial expression, and object perception is often examined through measuring inversion effects. However, participants may be biased by different experimental paradigms to use more or less holistic processing. Here we take a novel psychophysical approach to directly compare human face and object processing in the same experiment, with face processing broken into two categories: variant properties and invariant properties as they were tested using facial expressions of emotion and gender, respectively. Specifically, participants completed two different perceptual discrimination tasks. One involved making …

Organ Transplant Crisis: Should The Deficit Be Eliminated Through Inter Vivos Sales?, Richard M. Boyce Jul 2015

Organ Transplant Crisis: Should The Deficit Be Eliminated Through Inter Vivos Sales?, Richard M. Boyce

Akron Law Review

In response to what has been characterized as the "last remaining obstacle to transplantation," Senator Warren Hatch introduced a bill on October 20, 1983 which would establish a task force to investigate and make recommendations to Congress about the problem. Hearings and debate on the bill are scheduled to resume with the next Congress. Its future is bleak with the administration opposing it and the budget-cutting axe being resharpened. Regardless of the bill's outcome, the problem of supplying anatomical organs will continue to present a host of moral, political, and most importantly, legal issues which must be resolved if society …

Reproductive Timing Of Erimystax Insignis (Blotched Chub) In The Flint River Of North Alabama, Bruce Stallsmith, Josh Mann, Candice Allen

Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings

Important details of the reproductive ecology of many freshwater fishes of the species-rich southeastern United States are still poorly known. One such species is Erimystax insignis (Blotched Chub), whose range includes the Tennessee River drainage in northern Alabama, USA. To determine timing and patterns of reproductive effort, collections were made monthly of as many as 30 individuals from August 2011 through July 2012 from a 14 km stretch of the Flint River in Madison County, Alabama. Female and male gonadosomatic index (GSI) and ovarian development data indicate that reproductive activity for the species peaks from March through May. Ripe and …

Pegylation And Bioactive Modification Of Pancreatic Islet Surfaces To Enhance Graft Survival In Cell Therapy For Type I Diabetes, Jaime A. Giraldo Jul 2015

Pegylation And Bioactive Modification Of Pancreatic Islet Surfaces To Enhance Graft Survival In Cell Therapy For Type I Diabetes, Jaime A. Giraldo

Open Access Dissertations

Islet transplantation is a promising therapy for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM), an autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of the insulin producing beta cells pivotal to regulation of blood glucose. Despite vigorous and often injurious systemic immunosuppression, host inflammatory and immune responses lead to islet dysfunction and destruction over time. PEGylation, the grafting of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to the periphery of cells or cell clusters, has the potential to mitigate inflammation and immune recognition via generation of a steric barrier. While explored as a plausible immunoprotective barrier in previous studies, this dissertation seeks to fully characterize the impact of …

Economic And Sustainability Aspects Of Chemical Process Industries By Thermodynamics Analysis, Mahdi H. Alhajji Jul 2015

Economic And Sustainability Aspects Of Chemical Process Industries By Thermodynamics Analysis, Mahdi H. Alhajji

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Economics and sustainability improvements of some chemical processes are assessed after the retrofits suggested by thermodynamic analysis and energy analyzer. The main objective is to explore the scope of reducing the energy consumption and CO2 emissions for a more sustainable operation in chemical process industries. Thermodynamic analysis is carried out by applying the thermal analysis capability of ‘Column Targeting Tool’ to address the ‘energy intensity,’ and/or the ‘Energy Analyzer’ to design and improve the performance of the heat exchanger network system for process heat integration. CTT is based on the ‘Practical Near-Minimum Thermodynamic Condition’ representing a close to practical …
