Face Recognition Under Varying Illuminations, Mohammadreza Faraji Aug 2015

Face Recognition Under Varying Illuminations, Mohammadreza Faraji

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Face recognition under illumination is really challenging. This dissertation proposes four effective methods to produce illumination-invariant features for images with various levels of illuminations. The proposed methods are called logarithmic fractal dimension (LFD), eight local directional patterns (ELDP), adaptive homomorphic eight local directional pat- terns (AH-ELDP), and complete eight local directional patterns (CELDP), respectively.

LFD, employing the log function and the fractal analysis (FA), produces a logarithmic fractal dimension (LFD) image that is illumination-invariant. The proposed FA feature-based method is an effective edge enhancer technique to extract and enhance facial features such as eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth.

The proposed …

Modeling The Ecological Consequences Of Visitor Behavior In Off-Trail Areas Of Dispersed Recreation Use, Ashley L. D'Antonio Aug 2015

Modeling The Ecological Consequences Of Visitor Behavior In Off-Trail Areas Of Dispersed Recreation Use, Ashley L. D'Antonio

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parks and protected areas are often created to protect important social, ecological, or cultural resources from impairment. In the United States, a large majority of these parks and protected areas are also public land where recreational activities such as hiking or scenic driving are allowed. Managers of many parks and protected areas must therefore try to protect resources while also allowing for recreation use that may put these resources at risk for damage. The field of recreation ecology is interested in understanding how recreation use in parks and protected areas can sometimes cause ecological impacts to vegetation, soil, wildlife, water, …

Influencing Acceptability Of Parent Training Interventions Through Treatment Rationales, Trisha Chase Aug 2015

Influencing Acceptability Of Parent Training Interventions Through Treatment Rationales, Trisha Chase

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parent training is an effective intervention for parents of children with a variety of childhood disorders, and parents often view behavioral parent training as acceptable. Explanations and rationales for parent training are commonly provided at the beginning of treatment. However, there is little research regarding how rationales may influence acceptability. There is also limited information on whether fathers and mothers judge the acceptability of parent training differently. The purpose of this study was to determine whether changing the description of a behavioral parenting intervention influenced parents’ acceptability ratings and whether mothers and fathers differed in their ratings.

Matching Watershed And Otolith Chemistry To Establish Natal Origin Of An Endangered Desert Lake Sucker, Deanna Strohm Aug 2015

Matching Watershed And Otolith Chemistry To Establish Natal Origin Of An Endangered Desert Lake Sucker, Deanna Strohm

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Like many native endemic desert freshwater fish species, the June Sucker (Chasmistes liorus) is currently listed as endangered. Managers have increasingly turned to habitat restoration as a key component to recovery plans. For endangered species, one of the primary outcomes of habitat restoration is that it should result in successful reproduction and recruitment of individuals into the adult population. Confirmation of natural recruitment as a function of habitat restoration can only be achieved by establishing natal origins.

Recent research has proven the validity of otolith microchemistry, a technique that analyzes small quantities of elements, to trace potamodromous fish …

Virulence Evolution Of Fungal Pathogens In Social And Solitary Bees With An Emphasis On Multiple Infections, Ellen G. Klinger

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The health of pollinators, especially bees, is of the utmost importance to success of many agricultural ecosystems. Microorganisms can cause diseases in bees; such microbes are pathogenic. The ability of a pathogen to cause harm to its host (such as a bee) is termed its virulence. Studying the evolution of different levels of virulence can lead researchers to a better understanding of pathogens, and potentially predict how much harm a pathogen can cause in the future. We studied the evolution of virulence levels for a fungal disease of bees. This group of fungi is composed of 28 species, and some …

Investigating Into The Dynamics Of Mammalian Cell Growth: Using In Vitro To Help Improve Therapies, Arthur Nathan Brodsky

All Dissertations

In the past several decades, advances in our understanding of cells that comprise our bodies have been remarkable. This is due in large part to the development of mammalian cell culture practices that allow researchers to mimic conditions in the body. Cell culture techniques have allowed researchers to study the behavior of cells under various circumstances that would be impossible to study in humans. While there are some drawbacks to the reductionism inherent in studying cells in a dish, many medical treatments have resulted from cell culture experiments. Additionally, many new therapeutics are only possible due to these improved cell …

Loss Of Mitochondrial Dna Causes Decreased Cell Viability, Alan M. Herrera Aug 2015

Loss Of Mitochondrial Dna Causes Decreased Cell Viability, Alan M. Herrera

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Mitochondria are an organellar network involved in cellular bioenergetics and apoptosis, and dynamically balance their organization between fusion and fission events. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear DNA combine to encode polypeptides for the complexes of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in the mitochondrial inner membrane, which generate a transmembrane potential (ΔΨm) to synthesize ATP. Loss of ΔΨm causes mitochondrial fission, which appears to be associated with the progression of apoptosis, a critical cell death mechanism that allows tissue homeostasis, developmental sculpturing, and the removal of unwanted cells. Using cultured human cell models of decreased ΔΨm (both genetic mtDNA-depleted ρ 0 and pharmacological …

Religious Consumption: Inside The Minds Of Apple And Catholic Devotees, Yi-Chia Wu Aug 2015

Religious Consumption: Inside The Minds Of Apple And Catholic Devotees, Yi-Chia Wu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Cult-like phenomena have been researched widely in the fields of marketing, religion, sociology, and---more recently---in the field of neuroscience, where the exploration between individuals and brands through these lenses begins to offer glimpses into the relationship between brands and their devotees. Religion, a multidimensional influence on human behavior and decision-making, has been under-researched in the marketing discipline due to the sensitivity of religious topics and difficulties in measuring the impact of so potentially broad a field as "religion". This research narrows the topic and begins filling in the gap in the religion-brand relationship and explores what constitutes a cult-like allegiance …

Natural Polymer Based Composite Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Marcos R. Villarreal

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The fabrication, characterization, and bio-assessment of two types of perspective tissue engineering (TE) scaffolds are presented. Principally derived of biopolymers, both types of scaffolds generally followed porous scaffold methodologies for synthesis. Differentiating the two scaffold varieties was chiefly driven by crosslinking attainment, where crosslinking is argued to add structural stability and aid in regulating biodegradability rates in TE scaffolds. Microwave irradiation via conventional microwave was one method used to prospectively crosslink cornstarch to chitosan and sodium alginate. Triethyl orthoformate, was used to prospectively crosslink collagen and chitosan. After the scaffolds were “crosslinked” they were subjected to freeze drying techniques in …

Analysis Of Variables Related To Corridor Use By Ocelots And Bobcats In South Texas, Sarah E. Nordlof

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Biologists estimate that less than 50 endangered ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) remain in the United States, restricted to two small populations in Cameron and Willacy Counties located in deep south Texas. Conversely, bobcats (Lynx rufus) are abundant in south Texas; however, two of the biggest threats to both species are vehicle collisions and habitat fragmentation. To mitigate these threats, the installation of wildlife crossings has been proposed to decrease the number of road mortalities, and wildlife corridors have been suggested as a useful tool for providing increased habitat connectivity. However, research on ocelot use of corridors and wildlife crossings in Texas …
