Synthesis, Optimization, And Degradation Of A Fish Glue/Plga Polymer., Adam T. Schworer 1989-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biomaterials used for tissue engineering, specifically polymers, come from either naturally occurring, like gelatin or collagen, or synthetic sources, such as polyesters. Often times, it is advantageous to combine biomaterials in order to maximize certain material properties, such as cellular adhesion and degradation. The purpose of this study is to provide direction for the synthesis, characterization, and a combination of a combination biomaterial between fish glue (FG), a natural source polymer, and poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), a synthetically made polyester. First, FG is characterized for molecular weight via Gel Permeation Chromatography, GPC. Two combination methods to mix FG/PLGA solutions are then …

Lang’S Universal Molecule Algorithm, John C. Bowers, Ileana Streinu Aug 2015

Lang’S Universal Molecule Algorithm, John C. Bowers, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Robert Lang’s Universal Molecule algorithm, a landmark in modern computational origami, is the main component of his widely used Tree Maker program for origami design. It computes a crease pattern of a convex polygonal region, starting with a compatible metric tree. Although it has been informally described in several publications, neither the full power nor the inherent limitations of the method are well understood. In this paper we introduce a rigorous mathematical formalism to relate the input metric tree, the output crease pattern and the folded uniaxial origami base produced by the Universal Molecule algorithm. We characterize the family of …

A Gis-Based Expert Systems Predictive Habitat Model For Threatened And Endangered Species: Case Study Using Kentucky Arrow Darter, Benjamin L. Blandford, Michael Shouse, John Ripy

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This study presents a GIS-based predictive habitat suitability model for the Kentucky arrow darter (Etheostoma spilotum), a fish species of the upper Kentucky River basin that is a candidate for federal listing by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The model is based on previous work: the development of a similar predictive model for identifying the habitat of the blackside dace, a threatened minnow species of the upper Cumberland River basin in Southeastern Kentucky. The research describes a weighted, rules-based system which incorporates expert knowledge about habitat preferences for the arrow darter. For this model, five habitat factors …

Identifying The Geographic Origins For The Introduction Of Taeniatherum Caput-Medusae Subsp. Asperum (Medusahead) In The Western United States, Shane Kurtis Skaar Aug 2015

Identifying The Geographic Origins For The Introduction Of Taeniatherum Caput-Medusae Subsp. Asperum (Medusahead) In The Western United States, Shane Kurtis Skaar

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The use of molecular markers can provide insights into the demographic and evolutionary processes that have shaped the genetic diversity of native populations and can be used to identify an invasive species’ geographic origins. Taeniatherum caput-medusae subsp. asperum (medusahead) is a cleistogamous, diploid, annual grass native toEurasia that is now invasive in the western United States (U.S.). Enzyme electrophoresis methods (allozymes) have previously been used to analyze both native and invasive populations of medusahead. Results from these studies suggest that the invasion of medusahead in the westernU.S. stems from multiple introduction events. In addition, 10 of 34 populations from across …

Biomimetic Application Of Ion-Conducting-Based Memristive Devices In Spike-Timing-Dependent-Plasticity, Kolton T. Drake Aug 2015

Biomimetic Application Of Ion-Conducting-Based Memristive Devices In Spike-Timing-Dependent-Plasticity, Kolton T. Drake

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The design and synthesis of artificial learning systems has been aided by the study of biological learning systems. Classic biological learning is driven by the strengthening and weakening of the synapses that connect neurons within the brain through a phenomenon known as Spike-Timing-Dependent-Plasticity. That is, synaptic connectivity between neurons is modulated by the relative timing of their spiking outputs. Similarly, neuromorphic computing architectures can implement a mesh of artificial neurons interconnected by a network of artificial synapses to mimic the learning behaviors found in nature.

Memristors, two-terminal devices whose resistance can be programmed as a function of voltage and current, …

Resolving Relationships At The Animal-Fungal Divergence: A Molecular Phylogenetic Approach For Understanding The Ecology And Evolution Of The Protist Trichomycetes, Nicole K. Reynolds Aug 2015

Resolving Relationships At The Animal-Fungal Divergence: A Molecular Phylogenetic Approach For Understanding The Ecology And Evolution Of The Protist Trichomycetes, Nicole K. Reynolds

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The Ichthyosporea (= Mesomycetozoea) is a relatively understudied class of unicellular symbionts that molecular phylogenies have placed at the divergence of animals and fungi. Subsumed in this class are the cosmopolitan families Eccrinidae and Amoebidiidae (referred to as “protist trichos” or “trichos” herein), which are considered obligate commensal endobionts of various arthropods, including marine, freshwater and terrestrial hosts. Once thought to be members of the fungal class Trichomycetes due to their hyphal-like growth form and ecological similarity, molecular evidence has necessitated reclassification. However, evolutionary relationships within and between them are still unclear as the number of taxa sampled and/or the …

Effects Of Human Maternal Placentophagy On Maternal Postpartum Iron-Status, Laura Kathleen Gryder Aug 2015

Effects Of Human Maternal Placentophagy On Maternal Postpartum Iron-Status, Laura Kathleen Gryder

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Recently, human maternal placenta ingestion, known as placentophagy, has emerged as a rare but growing practice among postpartum mothers in industrialized societies, and is currently found in both home birth and hospital birth settings. The practice is purported to result in certain health benefits for postpartum mothers, some of which could be related to the iron content in full-term placenta (e.g., increased energy and an improved and more rapid postpartum recovery, among others). The aim of this research project was to investigate the effect of encapsulated placentophagy on maternal postpartum iron status via a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study (n=28). …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Las Vegas nightclub industry creates awfully ideal conditions for workplace sexual harassment. Considering the history of sexual harassment cases against major Las Vegas nightclub operators, the industry is currently facing the problem of either continuing to follow the “good old days” model of using bottle service girls’ sexuality to attract business or develop safer and more efficient business model to protect themselves and their employees. Analyses of secondary data including academic literature, trade publications and press, showed that similarly to the city itself, Las Vegas nightclub industry expanded and evolved from a boy's town to one of the most visited …

Overcoming Acquired Resistance To Braf Inhibitors By Novel Synergistic Drug Combination And Discovery Of Novel Smac Mimetics As Selective Survivin Inhibitors, Jin Wang Aug 2015

Overcoming Acquired Resistance To Braf Inhibitors By Novel Synergistic Drug Combination And Discovery Of Novel Smac Mimetics As Selective Survivin Inhibitors, Jin Wang

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The first part (Chapter 1 and 2) of this dissertation presents a novel combination study of melanoma therapy. Acquired clinical resistance to vemurafenib, a selective BRAFV600E inhibitor, arises frequently after short term chemotherapy. Since the inhibitions of targets in the RAFMEK-ERK pathway result in G0/G1 cell cycle arrest, vemurafenib-resistant cancer cells are expected to escape this cell cycle arrest and progress to subsequent G2/M phase. We hypothesized that a combined therapy using vemurafenib with a G2/M phase blocking agent will trap resistant cells and overcome vemurafenib resistance. To test this hypothesis, we first determined the combination index (CI) values of …

Exploration Of Nickel Tolerance And Hyperaccumulation In Arabidopsis Thaliana Transformed With Streptanthus Polygaloides Metal Tolerance Protein 1 (Spmtp1) Cdna, Madeleine K. Sano

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study evaluated the role of hyperaccumulator S. polygaloides Metal Tolerance Protein 1 (SpMTP1) in conferring Ni tolerance and accumulation in the non-accumulator Arabidopsis thaliana. Analysis for Ni content in transgenic Arabidopsis transformed with SpMTP1, following a 12-day treatment of 100 µM Ni, showed a significant increase in Ni concentration in comparison to the wild-type Arabidopsis and empty vector transformed plants. Exposure of transgenic Arabidopsis to nickel also resulted in a coordinated increase of antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, and catalase) activities in the transgenic Arabidopsis, suggesting that increased activities of these oxidative stress response (OSR) proteins may be …

Effects Of Time, Seed Source, And Plant Composition On Macroinvertebrates In Restored Prairie, Ben Wodika Aug 2015

Effects Of Time, Seed Source, And Plant Composition On Macroinvertebrates In Restored Prairie, Ben Wodika

Dissertations

Invertebrates influence primary productivity and nutrient cycling in ecosystems. They are also important links between producer and higher trophic levels. Despite their important role in terrestrial ecosystem function, invertebrates are frequently overlooked in ecological restorations. Thus, the objective of this research was to quantify how belowground macroinvertebrate ecosystem engineers and communities change over time following ecological restoration and examine whether the source of dominant plant species and the composition of non-dominant plant species influence aboveground macroinvertebrates community structure in restored prairie. A chronosequence design (space for time substitution) was used to determine the role of restoration age, plant community, and …

Relationship Of Human Intrusion On Avian Body Mass: Do Recreationists Hinder Birds’ Abilities To Acquire Fat During Migration?, Laura Marsh Aug 2015

Relationship Of Human Intrusion On Avian Body Mass: Do Recreationists Hinder Birds’ Abilities To Acquire Fat During Migration?, Laura Marsh

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Many North American landbirds undergo biannual migration, which is energetically costly. Quality stopover sites are crucial to avian survival, as they provide opportunities to quickly replenish fat stores, rest, and avoid predation. One component of habitat quality that is often overlooked is the level of pedestrian activity, which birds interpret as potential predators. If intrusion levels are high, birds will flush readily and may not adequately restore energy reserves, which hinders successful migration. I compared body mass index between birds at different intrusion levels, testing the hypothesis that birds near continuous intrusion are less capable of replenishing body fat. Results …

Identification Of Genes Required To Synthesize An Antibiotic-Like Compound From The Soil Bacterium Rhodococcus Sp. Mtm3w5.2, Amber L. Ward

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rhodococcus is a soil bacterium, member of the Actinobacteria, and a close relative of the prolific small molecule producer Streptomyces. Recent interest in Rhodococcus as an under investigated source of possible bioactive secondary metabolites is sparked by the discovery of many polyketide synthase and non-ribosomal peptide synthetase genes of unknown function from sequenced Rhodococcus genomes. Rhodococcus species strain MTM3W5.2 was recently shown to produce a strong inhibitory compound with activity against most strains of Rhodococcus and closely related genera. A goal of this investigation is to discover the gene(s) required to synthesize this inhibitory molecule. The engineered Rhodococcus …

Synthesis Of Phenothiazinium Derivatives, Selorm J. Fanah Aug 2015

Synthesis Of Phenothiazinium Derivatives, Selorm J. Fanah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) employs photosensitizing drugs for treating cancer. Once introduced into the body and localized in tumor cells, these photosensitizers are irradiated with light to produce active singlet oxygen radicals which kill cancer cells. The current drugs used in PDT have low quantum yield and always require a high energy radiation (normally laser). There is always a need for more effective drugs that have a high quantum yield and can be activated by visible light, in order to eliminate side effects caused by laser radiations.

In this work we synthesized derivatives of phenothiazine and phenothiazinium chromophores from the commercially …

Emergence Patterns Of Common Waterhemp And Palmer Amaranth In Southern Illinois, Lucas Xavier Franca Aug 2015

Emergence Patterns Of Common Waterhemp And Palmer Amaranth In Southern Illinois, Lucas Xavier Franca

Theses

The continued spread of glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp [Amaranthus tuberculatus (Moq.) Sauer (syn. rudis)] and Palmer amaranth [Amaranthus palmeri (S. Wats.)] have complicated weed control efforts in soybean and corn production in Illinois. A thorough understanding of the weed biology of these species is fundamental in developing effective weed management strategies. The determination of emergence patterns as well as the influence of tillage practices on soil microclimate and soil seed bank will allow control strategies to be implemented at the most effective timing. Field experiments were conducted in southern Illinois throughout the growing season of 2013 and 2014 on two separate …

Long-Term Shifts In The Phenology Of Rare And Endemic Rocky Mountain Plants, Seth M. Munson, Anna A. Sher Aug 2015

Long-Term Shifts In The Phenology Of Rare And Endemic Rocky Mountain Plants, Seth M. Munson, Anna A. Sher

Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Premise of the study: Mountainous regions support high plant productivity, diversity, and endemism, yet are highly vulnerable to climate change. Historical records and model predictions show increasing temperatures across high elevation regions including the Southern Rocky Mountains, which can have a strong influence on the performance and distribution of montane plant species. Rare plant species can be particularly vulnerable to climate change because of their limited abundance and distribution.

• Methods: We tracked the phenology of rare and endemic species, which are identified as imperiled, across three different habitat types with herbarium records to determine if flowering time has changed …
