The Problem Of Low Agreement Among Automated Indentification Programs For Acoustical Surverys Of Bats, Cliff Lemen, Patricia W. Freeman, Jeremy A. White, Brett R. Andersen
The Problem Of Low Agreement Among Automated Indentification Programs For Acoustical Surverys Of Bats, Cliff Lemen, Patricia W. Freeman, Jeremy A. White, Brett R. Andersen
Western North American Naturalist
We compared 4 programs designed to identify species of bats from their echolocation calls (Bat Call ID, EchoClass, Kaleidoscope Pro, and SonoBat) using field data collected in Nebraska, USA (29,782 files). Although we did not know the true identity of these bats, we could still compare the pairwise agreement between software packages when identifying the same call sequences. If accuracy is high in these software packages, there should be high agreement in identification. Agreement in identification by species averaged approximately 40% and varied by software package, species, and data set. Our results are not consistent with the high accuracy often …
Assessment Of The Immediate Impacts Of The 2013–2014 Drought On Ecosystems Of The California Central Coast, Christopher Potter
Assessment Of The Immediate Impacts Of The 2013–2014 Drought On Ecosystems Of The California Central Coast, Christopher Potter
Western North American Naturalist
A methodology was developed to assess the impacts of the historic 2013–2014 drought on ecosystems of California’s Central Coast region, using a combination of satellite image analysis and in situ measurements of soil moisture in predominant vegetation types of the region. According to differences in Landsat drought indices for plant water stress and vegetation green cover (NDWI and NDVI, respectively), the geographic areas within the study region that were most severely impacted by the 2013 drought were the inland Carmel Valley in northern Monterey County and the coastal zones around San Simeon Point and Cambria in northern San Luis Obispo …

Helminth Communities Of Cyprinodon Atrorus In The Natural Protected Area Of Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila, Northern Mexico, Rogelio Aguilar-Aguilar, Omar Lagunas-Calvo, Gerardo Pérez-Ponce De León
Western North American Naturalist
The helminth fauna of the bolson pupfish Cyprinodon atrorus (Osteichthyes: Cyprinodontidae) consisted of 7 helminth taxa collected from 7 localities of Cuatro Ciénegas, a natural area protected by the Mexican government in Coahuila, northern Mexico. The helminth community is described at the infracommunity and component community levels. The acanthocephalan Atactorhynchus duranguensis was the most prevalent and abundant species. The remaining species were rare and found at low mean abundance values. The observed species richness, individual parasite abundance, and diversity were low at both component community and infracommunity levels. These findings are similar to those found in other freshwater fish species …
Characterization And Functional Evaluation Of An Adhesive And Injectable Polyethylene Glycol Modified Chitosan Paste For Infection Prevention, Cheyenne Starr Rhodes
Characterization And Functional Evaluation Of An Adhesive And Injectable Polyethylene Glycol Modified Chitosan Paste For Infection Prevention, Cheyenne Starr Rhodes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Musculoskeletal infections often result in multiple surgeries and increased cost for the patient, and can be especially difficult to treat if infectious bacteria are biofilm-forming or antibiotic-resistant. This research evaluated a series of paste formulations, based on chitosan and polyethylene glycol (PEG) modified chitosan products combined in 70:30 to 30:70 ratios, to locally deliver antibiotics for early abatement of infection as a potential adjunctive therapy. Paste formulations were evaluated for injectability, adhesive properties, and in vitro degradability, cytocompatibility, and antibiotic release and activity as compared to a neutral chitosan sponge control. The paste formulations were also compared to the control …

Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration Among Sri Lankan Men, Ruvani W. Fonseka, Alexandra M. Minnis, Anu Manchikanti Gomez
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In Sri Lanka, over one in three women experience intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization in their lifetime, making it a serious public health concern. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as child abuse and neglect, witnessing domestic violence, parental separation, and bullying are also widespread. Studies in Western settings have shown positive associations between ACEs and IPV perpetration in adulthood, but few have examined this relationship in a non-Western context. In the present study, we examined the association of ACEs with IPV perpetration among Sri Lankan men surveyed for the UN Multi-Country Study on Men and Violence in Asia and the …

Aims/hypothesis Biological ageing of the immune system, or immunosenescence, predicts poor health and increased mortality. A hallmark of immunosenescence is the accumulation of differentiated cytotoxic T cells (CD27−CD45RA+/−; or dCTLs), partially driven by infection with the cytomegalovirus (CMV). Immune impairments reminiscent of immunosenescence are also observed in hyperglycaemia, and in vitro studies have illustrated mechanisms by which elevated glucose can lead to increased dCTLs. This study explored associations between glucose dysregulation and markers of immunosenescence in CMV+ and CMV− individuals. Methods A cross-sectional sample of participants from an occupational cohort study (n = 1,103, mean age 40 years, 88% male) …

Falling Below The Line: Minimum Subgroup Size And Special Education Enrollment, Sivan Tuchman
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) brought high-stakes accountability testing into every American public school with the goal of 100 percent proficiency for all students. Making annual yearly progress (AYP) toward this proficiency goal for the total student population as well as at-risk subgroups was required in order for schools to avoid possible sanctions, such as school restructuring. In implementing NCLB, states had flexibility to determine the minimum size of these subgroups as to provide statistical reliability and accountability for as many schools as possible. If a school did not meet the state’s minimum subgroup size, the …

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The experimental infection of dogs with TriGAS induced high levels of VNA in the serum, whereas wt RABV infection did not. Dogs infected with TriGAS developed antibodies against the virus including its glycoprotein, whereas dogs infected with DRV-NG11 only developed rabies antibodies that are presumably specific for the nucleoprotein, (N) and not the glycoprotein (G). We show that infection with TriGAS induces early activation of B cells in the draining lymph nodes and persistent activation of DCs and B cells in the blood. On the other hand, infection with DRV-NG11 fails to induce the activation of DCs and …

In this paper, I argue that, other things being equal, simpler arguments are better. In other words, I argue that, other things being equal, it is rational to prefer simpler arguments over less simple ones. I sketch three arguments in support of this claim: an argument from mathematical proofs, an argument from scientific theories, and an argument from the conjunction rule.

We recently reported the synthesis of NOSH-aspirin, a novel hybrid that releases both nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). In NOSH-aspirin, the two moieties that release NO and H2S are covalently linked at the 1, 2 positions of acetyl salicylic acid, i.e. ortho-NOSH-aspirin (o-NOSH-aspirin). In the present study, we compared the effects of the positional isomers of NOSH-ASA (o-NOSH-aspirin, m-NOSH-aspirin and p-NOSH-aspirin) to that of aspirin on growth of HT-29 and HCT 15 colon cancer cells, belonging to the same histological subtype, but with different expression of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes; HT-29 express both COX-1 and COX-2, whereas HCT 15 …
Targeted Transplantation Of Mitochondria To Liver Cells, Nidhi Gupta
Targeted Transplantation Of Mitochondria To Liver Cells, Nidhi Gupta
Doctoral Dissertations
Hepatocyte damage caused by genetic and acquired defects in mitochondria can result in severe liver dysfunction causing disease and death. Mammalian hepatocytes possess specific receptors on their surfaces called asialoglycoprotein receptors (AsGRs), which can recognize and bind asialoglycoproteins (AsGs). After binding, AsGs are internalized by receptor-mediated endocytosis within membrane-limited vesicles, endosomes, which ultimately fuse with lysosomes resulting in degradation. This pathway represents a natural mechanism by which substances outside cells can gain access to the interior of liver cells. In the past, small molecules have been bound to AsGs to deliver them specifically to the liver. The aim of this …
Effects Of Life History Strategies On Annual Events And Processes In The Lives Of Tidal Marsh Sparrows, Alyssa C. Borowske
Effects Of Life History Strategies On Annual Events And Processes In The Lives Of Tidal Marsh Sparrows, Alyssa C. Borowske
Doctoral Dissertations
I investigated ways in which events and processes within the annual cycle of migratory birds differ between the sexes of individual species, and between two closely-related species with different breeding systems. Specifically, I compared male and female Saltmarsh Sparrows (Ammodramus caudacutus), which are highly promiscuous, non-territorial, and have female-only care, and Seaside Sparrows (A. maritimus), which are socially monogamous, territorial, and have bi-parental care, to investigate how differential life histories influence: 1) the timing of migration and molt events; 2) feather quality and condition throughout the year; 3) within-season body condition and survival during summer and …

SCIENCE HAS ALWAYS BEEN a most important, if not the most important, agent of legal change. The hydraulic engineering achievements of ancient Egypt and China not only determined the laws of land ownership, use and planning, but also the administrative and constitutional structure of society. Where would the law of the sea be without the development of ships and the science of navigation? In a lighter view too we can imagine chariots creating traffic problems (and laws) on the Appian Way, or in the main streets of Athens and Pompeii-for it created problems for pedestrians both in peace and war

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study focuses on the undergraduates’ attitude as correlates of their academic achievement in cataloguing and classification in library schools in Southern Nigeria. Cataloguing and classification courses are the heart and soul of librarianship but some undergraduates will avoid the courses if they are made optional courses in library schools. Cataloguing and classification are compulsory in library schools in Nigeria; students are expected to pass the courses before they graduate but it was observed that some students failed the courses and were not able to graduate. Two research questions and one hypothesis were used for the study. Survey research of …
