Effect Of Relative Arrangement Of Cationic And Lipophilic Moieties On Hemolytic And Antibacterial Activities Of Pegylated Polyacrylates, Ashish Punia, Kevin Lee, Edward He, Sumit Mukherjee, Andrew Mancuso, Probal Banerjee, Nan-Loh Yang Oct 2015

Effect Of Relative Arrangement Of Cationic And Lipophilic Moieties On Hemolytic And Antibacterial Activities Of Pegylated Polyacrylates, Ashish Punia, Kevin Lee, Edward He, Sumit Mukherjee, Andrew Mancuso, Probal Banerjee, Nan-Loh Yang

Publications and Research

Synthetic amphiphilic polymers have been established as potentially efficient agents to combat widespread deadly infections involving antibiotic resistant superbugs. Incorporation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) side chains into amphiphilic copolymers can reduce their hemolytic activity while maintaining high antibacterial activity. Our study found that the incorporation of PEG has substantially different effects on the hemolytic and antibacterial activities of copolymers depending on structural variations in the positions of cationic centers relative to hydrophobic groups. The PEG side chains dramatically reduced the hemolytic activities in copolymers with hydrophobic hexyl and cationic groups on the same repeating unit. However, in case of terpolymers …

White Matter Microstructure Contributes To Age-Related Declines In Task-Induced Deactivation Of The Default Mode Network, Christopher A. Brown, Jonathan G. Hakun, Zude Zhu, Nathan F. Johnson, Brian T. Gold Oct 2015

White Matter Microstructure Contributes To Age-Related Declines In Task-Induced Deactivation Of The Default Mode Network, Christopher A. Brown, Jonathan G. Hakun, Zude Zhu, Nathan F. Johnson, Brian T. Gold

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

Task-induced deactivations within the brain’s default mode network (DMN) are thought to reflect suppression of endogenous thought processes to support exogenous goal-directed task processes. Older adults are known to show reductions in deactivation of the DMN compared to younger adults. However, little is understood about the mechanisms contributing to functional dysregulation of the DMN in aging. Here, we explored the relationships between functional modulation of the DMN and age, task performance and white matter (WM) microstructure. Participants were 117 adults ranging from 25 to 83 years old who completed an fMRI task switching paradigm, including easy (single) and difficult (mixed) …

Meaning, Being And Expression: A Phenomenological Justification For Interdisciplinary Scholarship, Neal Deroo Oct 2015

Meaning, Being And Expression: A Phenomenological Justification For Interdisciplinary Scholarship, Neal Deroo

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

The purpose of this talk is two-fold: first, to lay out a phenomenological justification for why scientific or theoretical investigation must be carried out both within particular disciplines and across various disciplines; and second, to show that such a justification--alluded to with varying levels of explicitness in various works by various figures--itself opens new paths of exploration for phenomenology.

Bacteriophages Isolated From Lake Michigan Demonstrate Broad Host-Range Across Several Bacterial Phyla, Kema Malki, Alex Kula, Katherine Bruder, Emily Sible, Thomas Hatzopoulos, Stephanie Steidel, Siobhan C. Watkins, Catherine Putonti

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

BACKGROUND:

The study of bacteriophages continues to generate key information about microbial interactions in the environment. Many phenotypic characteristics of bacteriophages cannot be examined by sequencing alone, further highlighting the necessity for isolation and examination of phages from environmental samples. While much of our current knowledge base has been generated by the study of marine phages, freshwater viruses are understudied in comparison. Our group has previously conducted metagenomics-based studies samples collected from Lake Michigan - the data presented in this study relate to four phages that were extracted from the same samples.

FINDINGS:

Four phages were extracted from Lake Michigan …

Facilitating Social-Ecological Transformation Of A Vacant Lot On An Urban Campus: The Houston-Congolese Connection, Sister Damien Marie Savino Oct 2015

Facilitating Social-Ecological Transformation Of A Vacant Lot On An Urban Campus: The Houston-Congolese Connection, Sister Damien Marie Savino

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

The importance of urban universities in civic ecology education and the transformation of urban spaces and mindsets has been little explored. With as many as 1475 colleges, universities, and communities colleges in large cities around the United States, many of which possess significant land holdings, it is conceivable that these institutions could make a significant contribution to the "greening" of cities. This paper posits that urban universities, especially those with environmental science and studies or sustainability-related programs, can be a locus for civic ecology education and can contribute, not only to the transformation of urban landscapes but also to the …

Analysis Of Environmental Effects On Leaf Temperature Under Sunlight, High Pressure Sodium And Light Emitting Diodes, Jacob A. Nelson, Bruce Bugbee Oct 2015

Analysis Of Environmental Effects On Leaf Temperature Under Sunlight, High Pressure Sodium And Light Emitting Diodes, Jacob A. Nelson, Bruce Bugbee

Publications

The use of LED technology is commonly assumed to result in significantly cooler leaf temperatures than high pressure sodium technology. To evaluate the magnitude of this effect, we measured radiation incident to and absorbed by a leaf under four radiation sources: clear sky sunlight in the field, sunlight in a glass greenhouse, and indoor plants under either high pressure sodium or light emitting diodes. We then applied a common mechanistic energy-balance model to compare leaf to air temperature difference among the radiation sources and environments. At equal photosynthetic photon flux, our results indicate that the effect of plant water status …

Uncertainty, Precaution, And Adaptive Management In Wildlife Trade, Annecoos Wiersema Oct 2015

Uncertainty, Precaution, And Adaptive Management In Wildlife Trade, Annecoos Wiersema

Michigan Journal of International Law

Wildlife trade is big business. Legal international trade in just some of the wild animals and plants traded worldwide is estimated at $350 to $530 million per year. The United States is the primary importer of virtually every major taxon of these species, including mammals, reptiles, fish, and plants. When it comes to illegal trade, estimates of its value range from $7 to $23 billion annually, covering wild animals, fish, and timber. This illegal trade fuels organized crime and militia and terrorist groups. In the face of all this pressure, some wild species appear to be traded in sustainable amounts. …

Distinct Effects Of Contrast And Color On Subjective Rating Of Fearfulness, Zhengang Lu, Bingbing Guo, Anne Boguslavsky, Marcus Cappiello, Weiwei Zhang, Ming Meng

Dartmouth Scholarship

Natural scenes provide important affective cues for observers to avoid danger. From an adaptationist perspective, such cues affect the behavior of the observer and shape the evolution of the observer’s response. It is evolutionarily significant for individuals to extract affective information from the environment as quickly and as efficiently as possible. However, the nearly endless variations in physical appearance of natural scenes present a fundamental challenge for perceiving significant visual information. How image-level properties, such as contrast and color, influence the extraction of affective information leading to subjective emotional perception is unclear. On the one hand, studies have shown that …
