Modeling Micro-Topographic Controls On Boreal Peatland Hydrology And Methane Fluxes, F. Cresto Aleina, Benjamin R. K. Runkle, T. Kleinen, Lars Kutzbach, J. Schneider, V. Brovkin

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Small-scale surface heterogeneities can influence land-atmosphere fluxes and therefore carbon, water and energy budgets on a larger scale. This effect is of particular relevance for high-latitude ecosystems, because of the great amount of carbon stored in their soils. We introduce a novel micro-topographic model, the Hummock-Hollow (HH) model, which explicitly represents small-scale surface elevation changes. By computing the water table at the small scale, and by coupling the model with a process-based model for soil methane processes, we are able to model the effects of micro-topography on hydrology and methane emissions in a typical boreal peatland. In order to assess …

Learning From Lionfish: Modeling Marine Invaded Systems, Matthew Johnston

Mathematics Colloquium Series

Simulating marine invaded systems requires broad consideration of physical oceanographic processes, such as ocean circulation patterns and temperature, and biological traits of the invader, such as their reproductive strategy and tolerances to their environment. Through this understanding of baseline biological and oceanographic function, models can be developed in order to forecast the incursion patterns of marine invasive species - helpful both to predict their spread as well as forewarn of impacts. To facilitate this understanding, computer simulation is useful in order to quickly and efficiently assimilate large biological and oceanographic datasets into digestible products. Data derived from such simulations are …

Performance Of A Single Interface In A Biocomposite Structure Measured Using Microcantilever Modulation Experiment, Igor Zlotnikov, Bernd Bayerlein, Benny Bar-On

Nanomechanical Testing in Materials Research and Development V

Biological mineral-organic composite materials are known to be tough, stiff, stable, viscoelastic bodies capable to creep, recover, absorb energy and even filter particular vibrations. This exceptional mechanical functionality is associated with intricate hierarchical architectures of biocomposites which often consist of stiff mineral units surrounded by extremely thin organic interfaces. The latter play a critical but poorly understood role in the unique static and dynamic performance of the bulk. In this work we propose a new method to study static and dynamic mechanical performance of a single thin interface in a biocomposite structure which is based on force modulation experiment (performed …

Publications and Research

Many dsDNA viruses encode DNA-packaging terminases, each containing a nuclease domain that resolves concatemeric DNA into genome-length units. Terminase nucleases resemble the RNase H-superfamily nucleotidyltransferases in folds, and share a two-metal-ion catalytic mechanism. Here we show that residue K428 of a bacteriophage terminase gp2 nuclease domain mediates binding of the metal cofactor Mg2+. A K428A mutation allows visualization, at high resolution, of a metal ion binding mode with a coupled-octahedral configuration at the active site, exhibiting an unusually short metal-metal distance of 2.42 A° . Such proximity of the two metal ions may play an essential role in catalysis by …

Radiation Medicine Faculty Publications

The gene Par-4 (Prostate Apoptosis Response 4) was originally identified in prostate cancer cells undergoing apoptosis and its product Par-4 showed cancer specific pro-apoptotic activity. Particularly, the SAC domain of Par-4 (SAC-Par-4) selectively kills cancer cells leaving normal cells unaffected. The therapeutic significance of bioactive SAC-Par-4 is enormous in cancer biology; however, its large scale production is still a matter of concern. Here we report the production of SAC-Par-4-GFP fusion protein coupled to translational enhancer sequence (5′ AMV) and apoplast signal peptide (aTP) in transgenic Nicotiana tabacum cv. Samsun NN plants under the control of a unique recombinant promoter M24. …

A Generalized Force-Modified Potential Energy Surface For Mechanochemical Simulations, Gopinath Subramanian, Nithin Mathew, Jeff Leiding Oct 2015

A Generalized Force-Modified Potential Energy Surface For Mechanochemical Simulations, Gopinath Subramanian, Nithin Mathew, Jeff Leiding

Faculty Publications

We describe the modifications that a spatially varying external load produces on a Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surface (PES) by calculating static quantities of interest. The effects of the external loads are exemplified using electronic structure calculations (at the HF/6-31G- level) of two different molecules: ethane and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-s-triazine (RDX). The calculated transition states and Hessian matrices of stationary points show that spatially varying external loads shift the stationary points and modify the curvature of the PES, thereby affecting the harmonic transition rates by altering both the energy barrier as well as the prefactor. The harmonic spectra of both molecules are blueshifted …

Role Of Current Density In Impress Current Cathodic Protection Of Stainless Steel In 3.5% Naci Solution / Justin Gerard K. Gerard, K. Gerard Justin Gerard

Student Works (2010-2019)

Impress current cathodic protections are common method of protecting steel structure from corrosion attack. The structure are supplied with cathodic current that reduced the corrosion rate. However if the magnitude of current supplied are insufficient, the structure will not be able to be protected and if the current supplied it too high, hydrogen embrittelement may occur. This research studies the effect of cathodic current density on stainless steel by electrochemical testing. A potentiodynamic polarisation test was conducted with stainless steel 316L and 304 in a 3.5% NaCl electrolytic solution. Stainless steel is resistance to corrosion in most atmospheric environment, nonetheless …

The Effects Of Modafinil And Atomoxetine On Dopamine Signaling In The Striatal Subregions Of The Rat, Martin Bobak Oct 2015

The Effects Of Modafinil And Atomoxetine On Dopamine Signaling In The Striatal Subregions Of The Rat, Martin Bobak

Theses and Dissertations

In an effort to combat diseases and disorders that impede our health, comfort and well-being, an abundance of prescription drugs have emerged in the past 60 years. Many prescription drugs have remarkable efficacy for treating the primary symptoms of these diseases and disorders; however, some drugs carry negative side effects that impose their own adverse symptoms, albeit, often to a lesser degree than the primary symptoms. Thus, one of the main objectives of the pharmaceutical industry is to innovate and develop novel therapeutics, which remediate the primary symptoms of disease and lack undesirable negative side effects. However, in order to …

Mediated Relationships: An Ethnography Of Family Law Mediation, Elaina Behounek Oct 2015

Mediated Relationships: An Ethnography Of Family Law Mediation, Elaina Behounek

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In my dissertation, I use multi-ethnographic methods to examine how mediators talk about, manage, and process families going through divorce. I show how a dominant narrative about marriage and the cultural expectations of parenthood provide a framework for mediators to manage the discourse of divorcing parties so assets and care giving can be split 50/50. The dominant P.E.A.C.E. narrative (P=parenting plan, E=equitable distribution, A=alimony, C=child support, E=everything else) restricts available discourse in mediation and guides mediators’ behaviors in ways that homogenize families by providing a linear formula for mediators to follow which results in only certain stories being allowed to …

Modified Atmosphere Packaging: A Progressive Technology For Shelf-Life Extension Of Fruits And Vegetables, Mahmoud Soltani, Reza Alimardani, Hossein Mobli, Seyed Saeid Mohtasebi

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Packaging and storage are the final phases in the food industry. Quality preservation, improving safety and reduction of postharvest losses waste are some objectives of the packaging engineering. One of techniques that widely used in packaging of fruits and vegetables are modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). In MAP for fresh fruits and vegetable the air of packaging headspace replaces with a predetermined atmospheric gases different in proportion from that of air. Oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen are the main gases used in MAP for injection to the headspace of pack. The choice and ratio of gases are very dependent upon the …

Caribou, Petroleum, And The Limits Of Locality In The Canada–Us Borderlands, Jenny Kerber Oct 2015

Caribou, Petroleum, And The Limits Of Locality In The Canada–Us Borderlands, Jenny Kerber

English and Film Studies Faculty Publications

his article discusses Karsten Heuer’s 2006 book Being Caribou in light of debates in ecocriticism and border studies about how to define the local in the context of environmental problems of vast range and uncertain temporality. It explores how Heuer’s book about following the Porcupine Caribou herd’s migration engages in multiple forms of boundary crossing—between countries, between hemispheric locations, and between species—and shows how insights from Indigenous storytelling complicate the book’s appeal to environmentalist readers by asserting a prior, transnational Indigenous presence in the transboundary landscapes of present-day Alaska and the Yukon.
