Team Maggot: Designing A Better Bait Cup, Kristi Bugajski, Jordan Corsolini, Chris Henning, Tori Tamburrino

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Forensic entomology is the application of data from arthropods for investigative purposes in the criminal justice system. This study examined blow fly oviposition (egg laying) rates on chicken liver. The purpose of this experiment was to create a more effective bait cup for a higher percent yield in oviposition. The three main questions studied were: “does the weight of the liver affect oviposition?”, “does the location of the bait cup affect the occurrence of oviposition?” and, “is a foil or a plastic cup more attractive for oviposition?” A one way ANOVA showed a significant difference in the amount of oviposition …

Acid Induced Dna Binding Of Cooa, Rachael Devries, Brian R. Weaver Oct 2015

Acid Induced Dna Binding Of Cooa, Rachael Devries, Brian R. Weaver

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

A bacterial heme protein, CooA, changes shape to bind DNA and activate transcription. Previous research indicated gas molecule (e.g. carbon monoxide) binding to CooA is essential to initiate protein shape change, but recent studies suggested the protein may be able to bind DNA without gas in acidic conditions. To investigate this, CooA was subjected to an acid range of 4-10 pH units and DNA binding was measured via a fluorescence anisotropy assay. From these studies, pH dependent DNA binding was observed, and optimal binding was achieved in the pH 4-6 range. Addition of gas did not improve DNA binding at …

Fungal Bioremediation Of Human Solid Waste, Alexander Mehreteab, John Stewart, Mark Johnson, Micheal Kevin Watters Oct 2015

Fungal Bioremediation Of Human Solid Waste, Alexander Mehreteab, John Stewart, Mark Johnson, Micheal Kevin Watters

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

The accumulation of solid human waste is a major problem for long-term space expeditions. Fungal bioremediation of solid waste could provide a solution to this problem. Filamentous fungi can be used to biodegrade human solid waste. We report here the comparison of a variety of wild-type filamentous fungi for their ability to rapidly degrade solid waste. Certain strains of wild-type filamentous fungi, such a Neurospora crassa and Gelanispora cerealis, yielded waste to fungal-mass conversion rates of over 60 percent in seven days. Several strains, includingNeurospora crassa, are edible and average about 50 percent amino acid content by …

Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Kinetics Of Host-Guest Chemistry Abstract, Charles M. Sayger Oct 2015

Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Kinetics Of Host-Guest Chemistry Abstract, Charles M. Sayger

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Host-guest chemistry refers to the chemistry in which a host and a guest molecule come together to form an inclusion complex. These complexes are utilized in numerous fields, including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and cosmetics. This study focuses on the kinetic and thermodynamic behavior of a guest molecule, Brooker's merocyanine, in β-cyclodextrin and its different derivatives (the hosts) at a fundamental level in an attempt to increase stability of the complexes. UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to study the kinetic stability of Brooker's merocyanine's unique, energy dependent isomerization pathway inside the cavity of the host molecule in solution. It was found that when …

Stable Isotope-Enabled Pathway Elucidation Of 2,4-Dinitroanisole Metabolized By Rhizobium Lichtii, Hunter W. Schroer, Kathryn L. Langenfeld, Xueshu Li, Hans Joachim Lehmler, Craig L. Just Oct 2015

Stable Isotope-Enabled Pathway Elucidation Of 2,4-Dinitroanisole Metabolized By Rhizobium Lichtii, Hunter W. Schroer, Kathryn L. Langenfeld, Xueshu Li, Hans Joachim Lehmler, Craig L. Just

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently developed military explosives are safer to handle, but more environmentally mobile, than traditional explosives. The new insensitive munitions, including 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), have been sparsely studied, making the use of bacterial and/or plant-based remediation approaches unfeasible without further information about the transformation of these compounds. To that end, Rhizobium lichtii isolated from willow tree tissues were studied and observed to completely degrade 5 mg L-1 DNAN within 24 h in liquid media with added carbon and nitrogen. The use of DNAN, [13C6] DNAN, and [15N2] DNAN enabled the identification of 11 previously unknown metabolites resulting from sulfation, acetylation, and/or methylation …

Deletion Of Cyclophilin D Impairs Β-Oxidation And Promotes Glucose Metabolism., Michele Tavecchio, Sofia Lisanti, Michael J Bennett, Lucia R Languino, Dario C Altieri

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Cyclophilin D (CypD) is a mitochondrial matrix protein implicated in cell death, but a potential role in bioenergetics is not understood. Here, we show that loss or depletion of CypD in cell lines and mice induces defects in mitochondrial bioenergetics due to impaired fatty acid β-oxidation. In turn, CypD loss triggers a global compensatory shift towards glycolysis, with transcriptional upregulation of effectors of glucose metabolism, increased glucose consumption and higher ATP production. In vivo, the glycolytic shift secondary to CypD deletion is associated with expansion of insulin-producing β-cells, mild hyperinsulinemia, improved glucose tolerance, and resistance to high fat diet-induced liver …

Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Stimulates Warburg-Like Glycolysis And Activation Of Satellite Cells During Muscle Regeneration, Xing Fu, Mei Jun Zhu, Mike V. Dodson, Min Du

Faculty Publications

© 2015 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc. Satellite cells are the major myogenic stem cells residing inside skeletal muscle and are indispensable for muscle regeneration. Satellite cells remain largely quiescent but are rapidly activated in response to muscle injury, and the derived myogenic cells then fuse to repair damaged muscle fibers or form new muscle fibers. However, mechanisms eliciting metabolic activation, an inseparable step for satellite cell activation following muscle injury, have not been defined. We found that a non-canonical Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) pathway is rapidly activated in response to muscle injury, which activates AMPK …

Enhancing The Effectiveness Of Biological Control Programs Of Invasive Species By Utilizing An Integrated Pest Management Approach, Invasive Species Advisory Committee

National Invasive Species Council

Conclusion

Biological control has been shown on many occasions to be the most cost-effective invasive species management tool available. However, integrating biological control projects with the full breadth of other integrated pest management (IPM) tools, expanding post-re- lease monitoring to maximize efficacy, adaptive management, and incorporating new and innovative ecological, and genetic technologies may provide private and public land managers greater opportunities for long-term success in suppression of established invasive species.

Reginal Intercession And The Case Of Cristina, Convicted Murderer, Katherine Allocco Oct 2015

Reginal Intercession And The Case Of Cristina, Convicted Murderer, Katherine Allocco

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

In the winter of 1328-1329, Cristina, widow of Thomas Scot, potter of London, was convicted, imprisoned in Newgate and sentenced to hang for the crime of murdering her husband. Her execution was delayed due to her pregnancy. In January or February 1329, Cristina sent a letter to Isabella of France, queen mother, requesting a King’s pardon. On March 2, Edward III pardoned Cristina, at his mother’s request, through letters patent. It appears that Isabella, who had an established reputation as an intercessor for both personal petitions and general political appeals, had successfully interceded on Cristina’s behalf. Although medieval queens- both …

Rag-3d: A Search Tool For Rna 3d Substructures, Mai Zahran, Cigdem Sevim Bayrak, Shereef Elmetwaly, Tamar Schlick

Publications and Research

To address many challenges in RNA structure/function prediction, the characterization of RNA's modular architectural units is required. Using the RNA-As-Graphs (RAG) database, we have previously explored the existence of secondary structure (2D) submotifs within larger RNA structures. Here we present RAG-3D—a dataset of RNA tertiary (3D) structures and substructures plus a web-based search tool—designed to exploit graph representations of RNAs for the goal of searching for similar 3D structural fragments. The objects in RAG-3D consist of 3D structures translated into 3D graphs, cataloged based on the connectivity between their secondary structure elements. Each graph is additionally described in terms of …

Beyond The One-Locus-One-Mirna Paradigm: Microrna Isoforms Enable Deeper Insights Into Breast Cancer Heterogeneity., Aristeidis G Telonis, Phillipe Loher, Yi Jing, Eric R Londin, Isidore Rigoutsos

Computational Medicine Center Faculty Papers

Here we describe our study of miRNA isoforms (isomiRs) in breast cancer (BRCA) and normal breast data sets from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) repository. We report that the full isomiR profiles, from both known and novel human-specific miRNA loci, are particularly rich in information and can distinguish tumor from normal tissue much better than the archetype miRNAs. IsomiR expression is also dependent on the patient's race, exemplified by miR-183-5p, several isomiRs of which are upregulated in triple negative BRCA in white but not black women. Additionally, we find that an isomiR's 5' endpoint and length, but not the genomic …

Efficacy Of Plant-Derived Antimicrobials In Reducing Foodborne Pathogens In Agricultural Soil And Their Effect On Soil Nutrients And Microbiome, Samantha M. Fancher Oct 2015

Efficacy Of Plant-Derived Antimicrobials In Reducing Foodborne Pathogens In Agricultural Soil And Their Effect On Soil Nutrients And Microbiome, Samantha M. Fancher

Master's Theses

Bacterial pathogens, such as Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, can contaminate agricultural soil thereby increasing the risk of produce-associated foodborne outbreaks. In this study three plant-derived antimicrobials (PDAs), carvacrol (CR), thymol (TY), and β-resorcylic acid (BR) were analyzed for their efficacy in reducing Salmonella and L. monocytogenes in agricultural soil. The effect of the PDAs on the soil pH, nutrients, and microbiome was also determined.

Sandy loam soil was inoculated with either Salmonella or L. monocytogenes followed by the addition of 0.25 or 0.5% CR, TY, and BR. The treated samples were analyzed up to 21 days for surviving pathogens. …

Organometallic Titanocene–Gold Compounds As Potential Chemotherapeutics In Renal Cancer. Study Of Their Protein Kinase Inhibitory Properties, Jacob Fernández-Gallardo, Benelita T. Elie, Florian J. Sulzmaier, Mercedes Sanaú, Joe W. Ramos, María Contel

Publications and Research

Early–late transition metal TiAu2 compounds [(η-C5H5)2Ti{OC(O)CH2PPh2AuCl}2] (3) and new [(η-C5H5)2Ti{OC(O)-4-C6H4PPh2AuCl}2] (5) were evaluated as potential anticancer agents in vitro against renal and prostate cancer cell lines. The compounds were significantly more effective than monometallic titanocene dichloride and gold(I) [{HOC(O)RPPh2}AuCl] (R = −CH2– 6, −4-C6H4– 7) derivatives in renal cancer cell lines, indicating a synergistic effect of the resulting heterometallic species. The activity on renal cancer cell lines (for 5 in the nanomolar range) was considerably higher than that of cisplatin and highly active titanocene Y. Initial mechanistic studies in Caki-1 cells in vitro coupled with studies of their inhibitory properties …

A Comprehensive Comparative Assessment Of Road Safety In Developed Countries, Hamed Ahangari Oct 2015

A Comprehensive Comparative Assessment Of Road Safety In Developed Countries, Hamed Ahangari

Doctoral Dissertations

One of the most significant costs associated with automobile travel is the number of road accidents and fatalities that this type of transportation incurs. Road fatalities in almost all developed countries have decreased over the last four decades. However, the rate of change varies tremendously from country to country. The discrepancy in road fatality records has been widely noted but there is no comprehensive sense of the contributing factors. Accordingly, the overall goal of this study is to develop a more comprehensive understanding of disparities in road fatality, and to assess the extent to which various potential contributing factors affect …

Hydroshare: Sharing Diverse Environmental Data Types And Models As Social Objects With Application To The Hydrology Domain, Jeffery S. Horsburgh, Mohamed M. Morsy, Anthony M. Castronova, Jonathan L. Goodall, Tian Gan, Hong Yi, Michael J. Stealey, David G. Tarboton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The types of data and models used within the hydrologic science community are diverse. New repositories have succeeded in making data and models more accessible, but are, in most cases, limited to particular types or classes of data or models and also lack the type of collaborative and iterative functionality needed to enable shared data collection and modeling workflows. File sharing systems currently used within many scientific communities for private sharing of preliminary and intermediate data and modeling products do not support collaborative data capture, description, visualization, and annotation. In this article, we cast hydrologic datasets and models as “social …
