Pelagic Habitat Use By Juvenile Reef Fishes In The Gulf Of Mexico, Katie Bowen, Tracey Sutton
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
The assemblage composition, abundance, frequency of occurrence, and vertical distribution of juvenile reef fishes in the offshore pelagic habitat of the northern Gulf of Mexico are described. This study, a component of the NOAA-supported Offshore Nekton Sampling and Analysis Program, is the first to examine juvenile reef fish distributions across the oceanic northern Gulf of Mexico after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Results presented here are derived from a 3-month, spring/summer research cruise in 2011 on the M/V Meg Skansi. A 10-m2 MOCNESS midwater trawl was used to sample 45 stations from the surface to a depth of …

Investigating The Influences Of Language Delay And/Or Familial Risk For Dyslexia On Brain Structure In 5-Year-Olds, Nora Maria Raschle, Bryce Larkin Chessell Becker, Sara Smith, Lynn Valérie Fehlbaum, Yingying Wang, Nadine Gaab
Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
Early language delay has often been associated with atypical language/literacy development. Neuroimaging studies further indicate functional disruptions during language and print processing in school-age children with a retrospective report of early language delay. Behavioral data of 114 5-year-olds with a retrospective report of early language delay in infancy (N = 34) and those without (N = 80) and with a familial risk for dyslexia and those without are presented. Behaviorally, children with a retrospective report of early language delay exhibited reduced performance in language/reading-related measures. A voxel-based morphometry analysis in a subset (N = 46) demonstrated an association between reduced …

Osteoporosis In Men, Seunggee Hong
Osteoporosis In Men, Seunggee Hong
Senior Honors Theses
Osteoporosis is a progressive bone disease that is characterized by a decrease in bone mass and density. Osteoporosis can occur in both genders. Women are more likely to be diagnosed with osteoporosis. Since men have larger bones than women, it is difficult to diagnose osteoporosis. However, presently, the occurrence rate of osteoporosis in men is increasing. It is very important to be aware of an increase of the true frequency of osteoporosis in men which is essential for prevention and long-term health. The purpose of this thesis is to examine pathogenesis of osteoporosis, hormone-related factors, lifestyle, diet, and exercise habits …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Neo-Confused Porphyrins And Related Systems, Arwa Salem Almejbel
Synthesis And Characterization Of Neo-Confused Porphyrins And Related Systems, Arwa Salem Almejbel
Theses and Dissertations
Carbaporphyrins have been the focus of many studies, and a wide variety of related carbaporphyrinoid systems have been reported. N-confused porphyrins are a class of carbaporphyrins where one pyrrole unit has been inverted. In this work, a newly discovered family of porphyrin isomers where one of the pyrrolic subunits is connected to the meso-bridges in a 1,3-fashion, called neo-confused porphyrins, has been investigated.
Reaction of pyrrole-3-carbaldehydes with acetoxymethylpyrroles and NaH in DMF gave neo-confused dipyrrylmethane dialdehydes. The resulting dialdehydes underwent an acid catalyzed condensation with a dipyrrylmethane to give neo-confused phlorins, and following oxidation with FeCl3 afforded new neo-confused porphyrins. …

Gatekeepers For Gifted Social Studies: Case Studies Of Middle School Teachers, Teresa Michelle Bergstrom
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This is a multiple case study of the ways middle grades social studies teachers, as curricular-instructional gatekeepers, may make decisions to provide their gifted students with purposeful differentiated instruction. More specifically, this study explores what teachers believe they should do to instruct gifted students, in what ways teachers prepare and adapt curriculum and instruction for gifted students, and how instruction for gifted learners can take place in a middle school social studies classroom. Through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and supportive visual evidence, six middle grades (6-8) social studies teachers disclosed in what ways they differentiate their middle grades social studies …
Targeting Autopalmitoylation To Modulate Protein S-Palmitoylation, Laura Dawn Hamel
Targeting Autopalmitoylation To Modulate Protein S-Palmitoylation, Laura Dawn Hamel
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Palmitoylation refers to the covalent attachment of fatty acids, such as palmitate, onto the cysteine residues of proteins. This process may subsequently alter their localization and function. Nearly all of the enzymes that catalyze palmitoylation, zDHHC protein acyl transferases (PATs), are implicated in neurological disorders, infectious diseases, and cancer in humans. Of particular interest to those who study palmitoylation are Ras family GTPas and zDHHC9-GCP16, the zDHHC PAT that palmitoylates Ras proteins. Erf2-Erf4 is the zDHHC PAT that palmitoylates Ras proteins in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Currently, there are no methods to therapeutically target palmitoylation for the treatment of disease. One …

Effects Of Control Release Fertilizers On Nutrient Leaching, Palm Growth And Production Cost, Pushpa Soti, Angie Fleurissaint, Stewart Reed, Krish Jayachandran
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different controlled release fertilizer technologies on nutrient leaching and plant growth parameters of two palm species, Chinese Fan (Livistona chinensis) and Queen (Syagrus romanzoffiana). We compared Nutri-Pak (12-4-12 controlled release packet) and Harrell’s (12-4-12 controlled release polymer coated urea) against Atlantic (8-4-12 controlled release polymer coated urea, coated sulfate of potash), the most commonly used palm fertilizer in South Florida. Plants were grown in 25 cm (11 L) pots under 70% shade, watered weekly, with pest and weed control done as required. Plant growth parameters: number of leaves, leaf length …

Enhanced Cross-Limb Transfer Of Force Field Learning For Dynamics That Are Identical In Extrinsic And Joint-Based Coordinates For Both Limbs, Timothy J. Carroll, Aymar De Rugy, Ian S. Howard, James N. Ingram, Daniel M. Wolpert
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Humans are able to adapt their motor commands in order to make accurate movements in novel sensorimotor environments, such as when wielding tools that alter limb dynamics. However, it is unclear to what extent sensorimotor representations obtained through experience with one limb are available to the opposite, untrained limb, and in which form they are available. Here we compared cross-limb transfer of force-field compensation after participants adapted to a velocity-dependent curl field oriented either in the sagittal or the transverse plane. Due to the mirror symmetry of the limbs, the force field had identical effects for both limbs in joint …
Cascadia Wildlands V. Bureau Of Indian Affairs, Hannah R. Seifert
Cascadia Wildlands V. Bureau Of Indian Affairs, Hannah R. Seifert
Public Land & Resources Law Review
Cascadia Wildlands v. Bureau of Indian Affairs exemplifies the discretion agencies enjoy when determining how to organize and present information in environmental assessments. In a case of first impression, the court relaxed the extent of analysis necessary to comply with NEPA by allowing reasonably foreseeable future projects to be aggregated with past projects. Additionally, the court permitted the BIA to circumvent the FWS’s Recovery Plan for the northern spotted owl by holding that the CRA was subject only to the standards and guidelines of federal forest plans, not specific recovery plans.

Topics In Complexity: From Physical To Life Science Systems, Pedro David Manrique Charry
Topics In Complexity: From Physical To Life Science Systems, Pedro David Manrique Charry
Open Access Dissertations
Complexity seeks to unwrap the mechanisms responsible for collective phenomena across the physical, biological, chemical, economic and social sciences. This thesis investigates real-world complex dynamical systems ranging from the quantum/natural domain to the social domain. The following novel understandings are developed concerning these systems' out-of-equilibrium and nonlinear behavior. Standard quantum techniques show divergent outcomes when a quantum system comprising more than one subunit is far from thermodynamic equilibrium. Abnormal photon inter-arrival times help fulfill the metabolic needs of a terrestrial photosynthetic bacterium. Spatial correlations within incident light can act as a driving mechanism for an organism’s adaptation toward more ordered …
Optic Nerve Regeneration In Adult Wild-Type Mice: Characterizing Axonal Growth Patterns And Target Reinnervation, Benjamin Joseph Yungher
Optic Nerve Regeneration In Adult Wild-Type Mice: Characterizing Axonal Growth Patterns And Target Reinnervation, Benjamin Joseph Yungher
Open Access Dissertations
Neuroregeneration research seeks to address why mature neurons of the central nervous system (CNS) fail to re-extend a severed axon. However, equally important is understanding what happens after axons are induced to regenerate through the environment of the injured nervous system. In optic neuropathies like glaucoma, retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axon degeneration and cell death result in loss of visual function and blindness. Treatment strategies have been developed that promote long distance regeneration of RGC axons but are largely dependent on genetically modified knockout (KO) mice. Given the expanded use of RNA interference (RNAi)-based treatments in human patients, therapeutically relevant …
