The Feasibility Of A Terraforming Expedition, Maura Lydon Jan 2015

The Feasibility Of A Terraforming Expedition, Maura Lydon

Undergraduate Research Awards

Establishing a colony of humans on another planet has long been a goal of the human race. In this essay I will lay out the feasibility of such a colony, using research and theories generated by astrophysicists, botanists, and planetary scientists.

Terraforming is defined as altering a planet's surface until Earth's life forms can survive without excessive protection. Here I will discuss the basic methods and theories behind terraforming, as well as possible methods of transporting materials, theories of planetary development, the timescale on which the project might take place, and where funding for such a large project might come. …

The Case For Women In Financial Services, Thao Thanh Nguyen Jan 2015

The Case For Women In Financial Services, Thao Thanh Nguyen

Undergraduate Research Awards

Finance literature has been studying the gender gap and the roles of women in business and finance. Focusing on mutual fund management, this study revisits the idea by investigating the impact of gender-specific investing styles on the level of volatility involved with the funds. The initial hypothesis is that the performance of funds managed by females is less volatile compared to funds managed by males. If we have statistical evidence to show this hypothesis is valid, gender diversification should be encouraged in asset management. The empirical results show evidence that the participation of women in fund management lowers the ten …

Annual Report 2015, Nebraska Center For Justice Research, University Of Nebraska At Omaha, Ryan E. Spohn

Reports

The Nebraska Center for Justice Research (NCJR) was established in 2014 with a mission to develop and sustain criminal justice research capacity internal to the State of Nebraska. Our goal is to assist the Legislature, justice agencies, practitioners, foundations, and stakeholders with research and evaluation to reduce recidivism, promote the use of evidence-based practices, and improve public safety. This inaugural annual report summarizes the activities and financial status of NCJR in its first year. From a research standpoint, we are very excited about the reports our Center has produced in its inaugural year. For example, we created a Trends in …

Characterizing The Temporal Dynamics In Functional Connectivity Measured With Fmri, Joshua Swearingen Jan 2015

Characterizing The Temporal Dynamics In Functional Connectivity Measured With Fmri, Joshua Swearingen

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

There is a considerable and growing interest in the organization and development of neural function at the scale of the entire brain, particularly from activity observed in fluctuations in the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This activity reliably organizes into sub-networks, whether obtained from subjects at rest or from those involved in various perceptual or cognitive tasks. While these networks have often been identified and studied, the precise dynamics involved in their interactions as well as the relationship between organization found in both resting and task-based activity are not well understood. Here I …

The 2015 Maritime Doctrine Of The Russian Federation, Russia Maritime Studies Institute, Anna Davis Jan 2015

The 2015 Maritime Doctrine Of The Russian Federation, Russia Maritime Studies Institute, Anna Davis

RMSI Research

The 2015 Maritime Doctrine of the Russian Federation is arguably one of the most important doctrinal statements to emerge from that country in recent years. It is in any case Russia’s most important recent articulation of its maritime interests and goals, and therefore provides insight into how Moscow envisions Russia’s global role. Yet because of the challenges of reading Russian and the absence of a publicly available translation of this essential document, western understanding of it is largely limited.

Dynamic Effect Of Light And Turbulence On Algal Photosynthetic Rate: A Water-Quality Model, Andres R. Rivas Jan 2015

Dynamic Effect Of Light And Turbulence On Algal Photosynthetic Rate: A Water-Quality Model, Andres R. Rivas

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

Several studies provide evidence that algal photosynthetic rates depend on various changing factors such as light attenuation, temperature, and nutrient limitation (Chapra, 1997). However, recent papers show that turbulence and photosynthetic rate dynamics is also important (Ross, 2006). In this study, the photosynthetic rate model used is the one proposed by Chapra (1997), where it depends directly on temperature, nutrient and light limitation factors. At the same time, the effect of turbulence or random-walk of algae particles in the water column was also introduced in this model. To account for this factor, the model added was that proposed by Ross …

Do Families Inspire, Joel Davison Jan 2015

Do Families Inspire, Joel Davison

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Does having children or being married inspire an artist to create more valuable works? This question stemmed from a recent article which suggests that when artists travel, they create more valuable art. After researching how having children or being married affects professions similar to artists, either in work process or wage type (like published researchers or the self-employed), it seems there is a connection. I then decided to apply economic models to evaluate art with regard to families. I gathered biographical data regarding artists, corresponding art auctions from 2013, and connected them on a yearly basis to determine if they …

Association Between Stressful Life Events And Change Of Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy Using Prams 2011-2012, Shidie Tang Jan 2015

Association Between Stressful Life Events And Change Of Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy Using Prams 2011-2012, Shidie Tang

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Objective: To examine the association between stressful life events during pregnancy and change of maternal smoking behaviors.

Methods: We used data from the CDC’s Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) to conduct the research. Our data included 24 states from 2011-2012. We considered 13 stressful life events and grouped them into four categories: emotional, partner-related, financial and traumatic stressors. Change of Maternal Smoking during pregnancy was defined by smoking at the last trimester of pregnancy versus smoking at 3 months prior to smoking. Confounders included maternal age, race/ethnicity, education, marital status, Medicaid coverage upon delivery and income prior …
