Results: MMP-2 and -9 serum levels and their activities were higher in CAP patients than controls (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). Low-risk patients had lower levels of MMP-2 and TIMP-1 than high-risk patients (P = 0.044, P = 0.001, respectively). Pretreatment serum TIMP-1 level was higher in patients with TCS of >3 days (P = 0.004) and was correlated with oxygenation and …

Developing A Framework For Stigmergic Human Collaboration With Technology Tools: Cases In Emergency Response, Janet Hinda Watkins Marsden Jan 2015

Developing A Framework For Stigmergic Human Collaboration With Technology Tools: Cases In Emergency Response, Janet Hinda Watkins Marsden

Dissertations - ALL

Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs), particularly social media and geographic information systems (GIS), have become a transformational force in emergency response. Social media enables ad hoc collaboration, providing timely, useful information dissemination and sharing, and helping to overcome limitations of time and place. Geographic information systems increase the level of situation awareness, serving geospatial data using interactive maps, animations, and computer generated imagery derived from sophisticated global remote sensing systems. Digital workspaces bring these technologies together and contribute to meeting ad hoc and formal emergency response challenges through their affordances of situation awareness and mass collaboration. Distributed ICTs that enable …

Practical Identity And Meaninglessness, Kirsten Egerstrom Jan 2015

Practical Identity And Meaninglessness, Kirsten Egerstrom

Dissertations - ALL

While research on meaningfulnesss in life is becoming increasingly popular in analytic philosophy, there is still a dearth of literature on the topic of meaninglessness. This is surprising, given that a better understanding of the nature of meaninglessness may help to illuminate features of meaningfulness previously unobserved or misunderstood. Additionally, the topic of meaninglessness is interesting in its own right - independent of what it can tell us about meaningfulness. In my dissertation, I construct and defend my own conception of meaninglessness.

I adopt Thaddeus Metz's (2013) analysis of meaninglessness presented in his new book, Meaning in Life: An Analytic …

"The Terror Within:" Neoliberalism And The Rhetoric Of The Obesity Crisis, Anna Hensley Jan 2015

"The Terror Within:" Neoliberalism And The Rhetoric Of The Obesity Crisis, Anna Hensley

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation focuses on specific discourses within the rhetoric of the "obesity crisis" that position the fat body as a threat to U.S. military power and national identity. Since 9/11, there has been a growing rhetoric that frames obesity as a threat to national security that is weakening U.S. military forces and straining the U.S. economy through increased health care costs and lower worker productivity. Drawing on research from rhetorical studies, transnational feminism, and disability studies that highlight the way that discourses surrounding the body are used to limit access to citizenship and rhetorical agency, this research analyzes the material …

Collective Phenomena In Active Systems, Xingbo Yang

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation investigates collective phenomena in active systems of biological relavance across length scales, ranging from intracellular actin systems to bird flocks. The study has been conducted via theoretical modeling and computer simulations using tools from soft condensed matter physics and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. The work has been organized into two parts through five chapters. In part one (chapter 2 to 3), continuum theories have been utilized to study pattern formation in bacteria suspensions, actomyosin systems and bird flocks, whose dynamics is described generically within the framework of polar active fluids. The continuum field equations have been written down phenomenogically …

Designing Core/Alloy Nanoparticles By Manipulation Of Interfacial Oxidation And Atomic Diffusion, Rahiem Davon Slaton Jan 2015

Designing Core/Alloy Nanoparticles By Manipulation Of Interfacial Oxidation And Atomic Diffusion, Rahiem Davon Slaton

Dissertations - ALL

Alloying presents a unique opportunity to combine the chemical and physical properties of two or more metals into one material. This phenomenon can also be used for multi-metallic nanoparticles (NPs), where in conjunction with the size effects induced by quantum confinement, new properties or phase behavior can emerge. The properties of nanoalloys are highly dependent on their composition and morphology, which are contingent upon the method in which they are synthesized. Finding ways to control, or even design, the composition and morphology of nanoalloys could potentially open the door for a standardized approach for creating nanomaterials with unique and desirable …
