Technology And The Guilty Mind: When Do Technology Providers Become Criminal Accomplices, Benton Martin, Jeremiah Newhall Jan 2015

Technology And The Guilty Mind: When Do Technology Providers Become Criminal Accomplices, Benton Martin, Jeremiah Newhall

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

The creators of today’s most successful technologies share an important willingness to push the envelope—a drive that propels digital industry forward. This same drive, however, can lead some technology purveyors to push the limits of legality or even become scofflaws in their pursuit of innovation or (more often) profit. The United States must figure out how to harness the important creative force at the heart of the hacker ethic while still deterring destructive criminal wrongdoers. Because it is often courts that must answer this question, it is essential to examine the legal doctrines prosecutors use to sweep up technology providers. …

Maternal And Paternal Imprisonment And Children's Social Exclusion In Young Adulthood, Holly Foster, John Hagan

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

The United States has entered its fourth decade of high imprisonment levels. It is now possible to assess the impact of parental imprisonment on children who have completed the transition to adulthood. We elaborate the role of parental incarceration from a life course perspective on intergenerational social exclusion in young adulthood. The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health [Add Health] representatively sampled the historically unique national cohort born in the 1980s, during the onset of mass incarceration. Four waves of the Add Health survey provide a valuable moving window on incarcerated parents and the transitions of their children from adolescence, …

The Unindicted Co-Ejaculator And Necrophilia: Addressing Prosecutors' Logic-Defying Responses To Exculpatory Dna Results, Jacqueline Mcmurtrie

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

This article addresses a prosecutor’s development of new and bizarre theories, particularly in cases involving confession evidence, to explain away exculpatory DNA results. In Juan Rivera’s case, the prosecutor’s theory for why sperm found inside the 11-year-old victim on the day she was murdered did not belong to Rivera was that she had sex with someone before Rivera came along and raped (but did not ejaculate) and murdered her. The unnamed-lover theory is used so often by prosecutors that it has a moniker: “the unindicted co-ejaculator.” In the case of the Dixmoor Five, teenagers convicted of the rape and murder …

Prenatal Medication Use And Autistic Behaviors In A South Korean Cohort, John Keaney Jan 2015

Prenatal Medication Use And Autistic Behaviors In A South Korean Cohort, John Keaney

Public Health Theses

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is thought to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, yet a specific cause remains unknown. In this study, exposure and outcome data from a South Korean cohort (N=3,711) were analyzed to investigate the possibility of an environmental contribution to autism etiology. No significant association was observed between use of prenatal medications and autistic behaviors, as measured by Korean versions of both the Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ; OR 1.20, 95% CI 0.95–1.51) and the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS; OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.78–1.25). Similarly, no significant associations were observed when use of prenatal …

Soil Biochemical Properties In Brown And Gray Mine Soils With And Without Hydroseeding, C Thomas, A Sexstone, J Skousen

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Surface coal mining in the eastern USA disturbs hundreds of hectares of land every year and removes valuable and ecologically diverse eastern deciduous forests. Reclamation involves restoring the landscape to approximate original contour, replacing the topsoil, and revegetating the site with trees and herbaceous species to a designated post-mining land use. Re-establishing an ecosystem of ecological and economic value as well as restoring soil quality on disturbed sites are the goals of land reclamation, and microbial properties of mine soils can be indicators of restoration success. Reforestation plots were constructed in 2007 using weathered brown sandstone or unweathered gray sandstone …

Understanding The Structure-Function Relationships Between Monoamine Neurotransmitter Transporters And Their Cognate Ions And Ligands, Bruce Felts Jan 2015

Understanding The Structure-Function Relationships Between Monoamine Neurotransmitter Transporters And Their Cognate Ions And Ligands, Bruce Felts

Theses and Dissertations

The SLC6 family of secondary active transporters is made up of integral membrane solute carrier proteins characterized by the Na+-dependent translocation of small amino acid or amino acid-like substrates. SLC6 transporters, particularly the monoamine transporters (MATs) of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, are some of the most heavily studied proteins today due to their association with a number of human diseases and disorders, making MATs a critical target for therapeutic development. In addition, MATs are directly involved in the action of drugs of abuse such as cocaine, amphetamines, and ecstasy.

Following the first cloning of a MAT gene in the early …
