Dual Effect Of Coumarin Benzimidazolium Ionic Salt Covalently Bonded On A Silica Network, Ahmet Gültek, Davut Aksüt, Turgay Seçki̇n, Emre Bi̇rhanli, Mert Olgun Karataş, Bülent Alici

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Synthesis of the ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-(4-methyl-7,8-dihydroxy-2H-chromen-2-one) benzimidazolium chloride followed by the conversion of ammonium salts on the imidazole ring hooked to the coumarin group was modified by postmodification of the silica matrix where 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane was used as not only a surface modification agent, but also as an ATRP halogen source. The synergetic effect of charged ammonium groups as well as hydroxyl groups present on the coumarin was investigated in terms of ATRP polymerization. The results confirmed that brush polymers show outstanding antibacterial effects against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

A Comparative Analysis Of Membrane Intactness And Genome Integrity In Pea,Barley, And Wheat In Response To Uvc Irradiation, Mariyana Georgieva, Ivelina Nikolova, Georgi Bonchev, Zornitsa Katerova, Dessislava Todorova Jan 2015

A Comparative Analysis Of Membrane Intactness And Genome Integrity In Pea,Barley, And Wheat In Response To Uvc Irradiation, Mariyana Georgieva, Ivelina Nikolova, Georgi Bonchev, Zornitsa Katerova, Dessislava Todorova

Turkish Journal of Botany

The maintenance of plant genome integrity plays a critical function in the processes of DNA replication, transcription, and repair. Short-wave UV radiation (UVC) is among the most harmful agents known to affect genome stability and to induce DNA damage, including double-strand breaks (DSBs). Most previous studies in plants addressed the effects of UVC radiation at the physiological level; however, little research effort has been put into genome sensitivity across different plant species. Here, we made use of the trypan blue exclusion test and neutral comet assay to assess nuclear membrane and genome integrity in response to UVC radiation in monocot …

Prospective Secondary Science Teachers' Argumentation Skills And The Interaction Of These Skills With Their Conceptual Knowledge, Ömer Acar, Bruce R. Patton, Arthur L. White

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This study investigated if prospective secondary science teachers enhance their argumentation skills and the interaction of the change in their argumentation skills with their conceptual knowledge during an argumentation-based guided inquiry course. 37 prospective secondary science teachers constituted the study sample. They were grouped according to whether or not they had a misconception about understanding of balanced forces at the beginning of the course. They performed oral and written argumentation tasks during the course. Their written argumentation tasks were assessed four times during the course for balanced forces and sinking and floating behaviour of objects. Results indicated that prospective secondary …

A Healthy Dose Of Race? White Students’ And Teachers’ Unintentional Brushes With Whiteness, Samantha Schulz, Jennifer Fane Jan 2015

A Healthy Dose Of Race? White Students’ And Teachers’ Unintentional Brushes With Whiteness, Samantha Schulz, Jennifer Fane

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper reports on efforts by three Australian academics to develop students’ sociocultural awareness (in particular, their racial literacy) during a time of mounting pressure on teacher educators to narrow and standardise their approaches. The field of health education provides a vehicle for research; however, it is not the paper’s central foci. Of key concern is the development of a critical disposition in students – a disposition geared toward teaching for social equity. Learning of this nature transcends topic domains, and therefore allows for collaboration between academics in different parts of teacher education. Specifically, the paper focuses upon ‘whiteness’ and …

Changes In Science Teaching Self-Efficacy Among Primary Teacher Education Students, David Palmer, Jeanette Dixon, Jennifer Archer Jan 2015

Changes In Science Teaching Self-Efficacy Among Primary Teacher Education Students, David Palmer, Jeanette Dixon, Jennifer Archer

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Abstract: Many preservice primary teachers have low self-efficacy for science teaching. Although science methods courses have often been shown to enhance self-efficacy, science content courses have been relatively ineffective in this respect. This study investigated whether a tailored science content course would enhance self-efficacy. The participants were preservice primary teachers and data collection was by survey and interview. Self-efficacy increased during the course and the increases were stable after a 10-month delay period. The factors that enhanced self-efficacy were: learning science content, perceptions of learning how to teach science, and teacher enthusiasm.

Shoot tips of five tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) genotypes were successfully cryopreserved by droplet vitrification. Recovered plants were studied for genetic stability by two different assays: amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) using 4 primer combinations and sequencing of lycopene $\beta$-cyclase gene (LCY-B) from leaves. The highest shoot regeneration after cryopreservation was 70% (Pontica) following 24 h osmoprotection in 0.5 M sucrose and 30 min dehydration in plant vitrification solution 2 (PVS2). The data inferred from AFLP showed no genetic dissimilarities between in vitro regenerants derived from cryopreserved tissues compared with the noncryopreserved controls. Although a single nucleotide polymorphism, a G→T …

Mitochondrial Dna-Related Disorders: Emphasis On Mechanisms And Heterogeneity, Umut Cagin, Jose Antonio Enriquez Jan 2015

Mitochondrial Dna-Related Disorders: Emphasis On Mechanisms And Heterogeneity, Umut Cagin, Jose Antonio Enriquez

Turkish Journal of Biology

Mitochondrial diseases are a heterogeneous group of disorders that are currently the focus of intense research. The many cell functions performed by mitochondria include ATP production, calcium homeostasis, and apoptosis. One of the unique properties of mitochondria is the existence of a separate mitochondrial genome (mitochondrial DNA, mtDNA) found in varying copy numbers and containing 37 genes, 13 of them encoding proteins. All 13 mitochondrially encoded proteins form part of oxidative phosphorylation complexes through combination with approximately 100 nuclear DNA-encoded proteins. Coregulation of nDNA and mtDNA is therefore essential for mitochondrial function, and this coregulation contributes to the heterogeneity and …

Expression Profiles Of Genes Related To Melatonin And Oxidative Stress In Human Renal Proximal Tubule Cells Treated With Antibiotic Amphotericin B And Its Modified Forms, Joanna Gola, Aleksandra Skubis, Bartosz Sikora, Celina Kruszniewska-Rajs, Jolanta Adamska, Urszula Mazurek, Barbara Strzalka-Mrozik, Grzegorz Czernel, Mariusz Gagos

Turkish Journal of Biology

Melatonin protects cells from oxidative stress caused by antibiotics. Through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), amphotericin B (AmB) causes oxidative injuries of the kidneys and liver. Generation of oxidized forms of AmB (AmB-ox) in a patient's circulation may also generate ROS, causing side effects. Studies aimed at elimination of toxic properties of AmB are focused on forming complexes of AmB with copper(II) ions (AmB-Cu2+). However, the influence of such modified forms on renal cells and their transcriptome has not been studied so far. Therefore, the aim of this study was to answer the question of whether AmB-Cu2+ complexes …

Physical And Chemical Properties Of Recently Deposited Sediments In The Reservoir Of The Borçka Dam In Artvin, Turkey, Bülent Turgut, Mehmet Özalp, Bahti̇yar Köse

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Large dams produce important changes in flow regime and sediment deposition and distribution in rivers. When inundation starts with the building of dams, water surface area increases, flow rate decreases, and sediment carried by the river is deposited in the reservoir. However, there is a lack of research on the physical and chemical properties of recently deposited sediment in reservoirs of large dams. We aimed to fill this gap in the literature by providing valuable data on the initial formation of sediment deposition areas in reservoirs. Therefore, the aim of this study conducted within the Borçka Dam reservoir was to …

Temperature Sensitivity Of Photosystem Ii In Isolated Thylakoid Membranes From Fluridone-Treated Pea Leaves, Kolyo Dankov, Georgi Rashkov, Amarendra Misra, Emilia L. Apostolova

Turkish Journal of Botany

High temperature-induced changes in the photosystem II (PSII) activity of thylakoid membranes isolated from pea (Pisum sativum L. 'Ran') plants treated with low (10-8 M) and high (10-7 M) concentrations of fluridone were investigated. Pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic oxygen evolution (measured by polarographic oxygen rate electrode) were used to estimate the effect of high temperature on the functional activity of PSII. Higher temperature treatments lead to stronger inhibition of the flash oxygen evolution than the primary photochemistry of PSII (Fv/Fm). The inhibitory effect of higher temperature on the PSII? centers is stronger than on the PSIIß …

Towards A New Classification Of Salvia S.L.: (Re)Establishing The Genus Pleudia Raf., Maria Will, Natalie Schmalz, Regine Classen-Bockhoff

Turkish Journal of Botany

Salvia L. İn its traditional circumscription is the largest genus within the mint family. To date, the magnitude of the task has rendered it difficult to provide a genus-wide revision based on morphological data. Current molecular investigations based on a dense taxon sampling representing the whole phenotypic diversity and distribution range of Salvia confirmed that the genus is polyphyletic. Salvia species fall in 4 distinct clades, although all of them, except Clade IV, also include non-Salvia genera. A taxonomic revision is thus urgently needed with two different approaches that have to be considered: (1) to include the 5 morphologically distinct …
