Investigating Whether Giving Or Receiving Support Impacts Caregivers Who Were Maltreated Or Not Maltreated Differently, Tara D. Matta-Singh
Investigating Whether Giving Or Receiving Support Impacts Caregivers Who Were Maltreated Or Not Maltreated Differently, Tara D. Matta-Singh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Caregivers can experience higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression compared to non-caregivers. However, a growing body of literature is beginning to show that while caregiving may be stressful, there may also be benefits to the caregiver, such as feeling closer to the care recipient, a sense of purpose or personal growth. Further, research now demonstrates that giving support to others can be more beneficial than receiving support from others in terms of mental health and even mortality. While these are important advances in the literature, understanding the impacts of giving and receiving support on individuals who were maltreated by …

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive cancers characterized by highly invasive growth into the surrounding peripancreatic fat tissue, where tumor cells can directly interact with adipocytes. Due to poor response to the currently available (radio)chemotherapies, there is an urgent need for advanced therapy concepts. The present study shows that ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 13), a key factor in blood coagulation, is significantly overexpressed in human PDAC. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that ADAMTS13 expression is associated with prolonged survival and negatively correlated with vascular density. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate its partial …

Lipedema is a chronic disorder characterized by the symmetrical accumulation of subcutaneous adipose tissue, predominantly affecting women. Despite increasing recognition, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying adipose tissue dysfunction in lipedema remain incompletely understood. This mini review combines current knowledge about adipose tissue biology in lipedema, highlighting recent discoveries, ongoing controversies, and future research directions. A comprehensive literature review was conducted focusing on adipose tissue-related research in lipedema with emphasis on pathophysiological mechanisms, cellular composition, and therapeutic implications. Recent studies reveal that lipedema adipose tissue exhibits distinct characteristics, including M2 macrophage predominance, stage-dependent adipocyte hypertrophy, progressive fibrosis, and altered lymphatic/vascular function. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is one of the most aggressive subtypes of breast cancer, with limited targeted treatment options and poor clinical outcomes. HER3 has recently emerged as a promising therapeutic target, with HER3-directed antibody–drug conjugates advancing to Phase III clinical trials for non-small cell lung cancer. However, the downstream molecular mechanisms by which HER3 promotes TNBC progression remain poorly defined. In this study, we uncovered a previously unrecognized HER3/miR-34b-5p/PHF8 signaling axis that drives TNBC cell proliferation and tumor growth. Mechanistically, HER3 activation suppresses the tumor-suppressive microRNA miR-34b-5p, resulting in the upregulation of the histone demethylase PHF8 (KDM7B), which in …

RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) has emerged as a powerful tool for resolving variants of uncertain significance (VUSs), particularly those affecting gene expression and splicing. However, most reference datasets and diagnostic protocols employ relatively modest sequencing depths (∼50-150 million reads), which may fail to detect low-abundance transcripts and rare splicing events critical for accurate diagnosis. We evaluated the diagnostic and translational utility of ultra-high-depth (up to ∼1 billion unique reads) RNA-seq in four clinically accessible tissues using the Ultima sequencing platform. After validating the performance of Ultima RNA-seq, we investigated how increasing sequencing depth affects gene and isoform detection, splicing variant discovery, …

Perpetration-Induced Traumatic Stress And Moral Injury In Adult Male Incarcerated Individuals, Cyrelah Jeanee Raynor
Perpetration-Induced Traumatic Stress And Moral Injury In Adult Male Incarcerated Individuals, Cyrelah Jeanee Raynor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Underutilizing trauma-informed approaches in correctional rehabilitation has had detrimental consequences, particularly for gang-involved populations. Theories of personality, responsivity, and stress suggest that gang-affiliated individuals, shaped by coercive environments, may develop psychological reactions such as fear, guilt, and moral shame that contribute to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and moral injury (MI). This study examined whether gang role, psychopathy, and perpetration predicted PTSD and MI among 70 incarcerated adult males. Participants completed the Moral Injury Outcome Scale (MIOS), the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), and the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale (LSRP). Two hierarchical regressions were conducted. In the PTSD model, only education …

Communicating The Truth-Telling And Space-Making Of Black Women In Higher Education: A Trap Feminist Study, Chazman Deira Mckoy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation adopts a “for Black women, by Black women” approach to examine how Black women’s lived experiences and performances of racialized gender become communicative acts of agency as they navigate the intersecting challenges of race and gender within pedagogical contexts.
Grounded in Black Feminist Pedagogy and expanded through Trap Feminism, this study celebrates the complexity of racialized gender performances and theorizes them as intentional communicative acts of resistance. These acts not only confront dominant ideologies but also create ongoing spaces for truth-telling, spaces where Black women can reframe how their stories, labor, and brilliance are recognized in academic contexts …

Can Dietary Supplements Support Muscle Function And Physical Activity? A Narrative Review, Louise Brough, Gail Rees, Lylah Drummond-Clarke, Jennifer E. Mccallum, Elisabeth Taylor, Oleksii Kozhevnikov, Steven Walker
School of Biomedical Sciences
Dietary supplementation is commonly used by athletes to gain muscle mass, enhance performance, and improve recovery. Most adults engage in insufficient physical activity. Yet healthy muscles are also critical for activities of daily living (ADLs), maintaining a good quality of life and positive ageing. There is growing interest in whether dietary supplementation is of value, particularly among subgroups such as the occasionally active, the ill and elderly, and peri- and menopausal women. By focusing on function, performance, mass and strength, ADLs, exercise-induced muscle damage and delayed onset muscle soreness, this review sought to examine muscle health through a nutritional lens. …

Background/objectives: NOTCH1 is frequently mutated in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and is a marker of poor prognosis. In addition to NOTCH1, mutations in the NOTCH1 regulatory pathway including SPEN have been described in a limited number of CLL cases and others have suggested that these mutations are also associated with adverse patient outcomes Methods: In this study, 1617 CLL cases were assessed using targeted sequencing and a 29-gene panel and the results were correlated with prognosis.
Results: SPEN mutations were detected in 48 (2.9%) CLL patients: 92.4% were deleterious (frameshift or truncating nonsense mutations) and the remaining (7.6%) were …

INTRODUCTION: Acoustic neuroma (AN) is a benign tumor of the vestibulocochlear nerve, with increasing detection due to improved imaging. Treatment decisions are complex, requiring an individualized approach based on tumor size, location, growth rate, and patient-specific factors such as hearing and vestibular function.
RESULTS: Treatment options include observation, microsurgery, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Hearing preservation is prioritized in select cases using middle cranial fossa or retrosigmoid approaches, while translabyrinthine surgery is preferred for larger tumors or disabling dizziness. Stereotactic radiosurgery offers a non-invasive alternative but has variable long-term hearing outcomes and potential tumor regrowth. Vestibular rehabilitation is essential post-treatment, particularly after …

Acoustic telemetry offers valuable insights into species' spatial and temporal movement patterns, helping to understand habitat use, behaviour and migration timings. The Fish Intel Network established a collaborative cross-English Channel acoustic telemetry network to track multiple species over small and large spatial scales. This network was designed in close alliance with local fishers to incorporate essential local ecological knowledge of target species and habitats, gathered through interviews and workshops. To date, 254 acoustic receivers have been deployed, and 874 animals have been tagged across the Channel. Six species were tracked for this study: European bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), pollack (Pollachius pollachius), …

Background: Delirium is often underdiagnosed in clinical practice and is not routinely coded for billing. While manual chart review can identify delirium, it is labor-intensive and impractical for large-scale studies. Natural language processing (NLP) can analyze unstructured text in electronic health records (EHRs) to extract meaningful clinical information.
Methods: To support national integration of NLP for EHR-based delirium identification across different institutions, we launched the Delirium Interest Group within the national Evolve to Next-Gen Accrual to Clinical Trials (ENACT) NLP Working Group. This paper outlines our initial efforts to standardize, evaluate, and translate an NLP-based delirium detection model into the …

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for 90% of adult renal cancer cases and is characterized by significant heterogeneity within its tumor microenvironment. This study tests the hypothesis that tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) influence RCC progression and patient response to treatment by investigating the prognostic implications of TAM signatures. Utilizing independent single-cell RNA sequencing data from RCC patients, we developed eight distinct TAM signatures reflective of TAM presence. A LASSO Cox regression model was constructed to predict survival outcomes, evaluated using the TCGA dataset, and validated across independent RCC cohorts. Model performance was assessed through Kaplan-Meier survival plots, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) …

Mixed-lineage leukemia (MLL) rearrangements and Nucleophosmin-1 (NPM1) mutations are associated with acute leukemias whose pathogenesis is critically influenced by protein-protein interactions between menin and MLL. We hypothesized that targeting the menin-MLL interaction using DS-1594b and blocking the antiapoptotic BCL-2 protein using venetoclax may promote differentiation and enhance eradication of MLL-rearranged and NPM1-mutated leukemias models. We treated acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines with MLL rearrangements, NPM1 mutations, other leukemias and primary samples from AML patients with venetoclax alone, DS- 1594b alone, and their combination. We measured proliferation, viability, apoptosis, and differentiation using a variety of cellular assays, Western blotting, and …

Why The Irish Don’T Eat Offal, Niall Toner
European Journal of Food Drink and Society
In the past fifty years or so, the diverse and colourful displays of animal offal and organ meats that used to be seen in butchers’ shop windows in Ireland, as well as in the UK and America, have all but disappeared. In Ireland, which has seen a gastronomic renaissance in more recent times, these traditional foodstuffs appear to have been slow to return to our plates. But have offal and organ meats a place in the future of the cuisine, and can the increased consumption of offal and organ meats, produced locally, contribute towards a more sustainable food production system, …

Newbridge House, in north County Dublin, was built in 1747 by Archbishop of Dublin, Charles Cobbe to designs by prominent architect James Gibbs. Having arrived in Ireland in 1717, acquiring land and ecclesiastical promotion, Cobbe settled in north Dublin and built a house in the Palladian vision for his family. In 1755 his heir and sole surviving son Thomas married Lady Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Beresford, daughter of the 1st earl of Tyrone. Together Thomas and Lady Betty assembled an art collection at Newbridge, extending the house for that purpose. Included in that extension were more bedrooms, but, importantly here, increased servants’ …

This research project aimed to examine how varying portrayals of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) influence public mental health literacy (MHL). Our research questions focused on the impact of multidimensional vs single portrayals of OCD on OCD MHL, as well as the influence of certain sociodemographic factors on OCD MHL. Additional exploratory questions were investigated and aimed to explain the relationship between OCD MHL and media, as well as OCD MHL and education levels. To investigate these questions, the study employed a combination of experimental and survey-based methods. By fostering greater awareness of misinformation about OCD, the study not only aimed to …
Religion's Role In Shaping Psychopathological Narratives, Andrea Gonzalez Mendoza
Religion's Role In Shaping Psychopathological Narratives, Andrea Gonzalez Mendoza
The Graduate Review
Understanding the interplay between religion and psychopathology is essential for clinicians navigating the complexities of mental health diagnosis and treatment. This paper explores the nuanced relationship between belief systems and diagnostic frameworks, shedding light on how religious beliefs influence the perception, assessment, and treatment of mental disorders. Drawing upon historical and current-day research, this paper examines how religious interpretations shape the presentation and understanding of psychopathological symptoms. In doing so, this paper argues that psychopathology cannot be understood without considering the influence of religion on its conceptualization. The latter is illustrated by looking at historical diagnostic patterns and how they …

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research
"Eurasia, that vast continental region that encompasses Europe and Asia, was a tablet for many of Pearl S. Buck’s works and campaigns for human rights and international efforts to improve the human condition globally. Though she is principally known for her works on China, some scholars, while acknowledging that her novels were principally for an American female audience, gave little attention to her significant body of non-fictional works on a variety of subjects on America and East Asia. I made my first trip to China in the summer of 1985 via the Trans-Siberian Railroad and Mongolia to Beijing."

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage DNA and kill cells. We use laboratory and observational studies of the harmful effect of UV radiation on marine photosynthesizers to inform the implementation of a UV radiation damage function for phytoplankton photosynthesis in a modified version of the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2-UVphyto). CESM2-UVphyto is capable of simulating UV inhibition of photosynthesis among modeled phytoplankton and ocean column penetration of UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C radiation. We conduct a series of simulations with CESM2-UVphyto using the Marine Biogeochemistry Library (MARBL) ecosystem model to understand the sensitivity of phytoplankton productivity to UV radiation. Results …
The Perceptions Of Foster Care Alumni Who Are Recipients Of Pandemic Aid, Ashley Robinson
The Perceptions Of Foster Care Alumni Who Are Recipients Of Pandemic Aid, Ashley Robinson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic heightened challenges for young adults transitioning from foster care to independence. Research shows that foster care alumni faced barriers in education, employment, housing, and health due to limited support networks. Yet, little is known about how emergency policies, such as the Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA) of 2021, affected them. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of foster care alumni who received financial aid through the Act. The research question: What were the experiences and perceptions of foster care alumni (aged 18-26) who received funds via the CAA of 2021 during …
