An Intelligence-Based Islanding Detection Method Using Dwt And Ann, Mehrdad Heidari, Ghodratollah Seifossadat, Morteza Razaz
An Intelligence-Based Islanding Detection Method Using Dwt And Ann, Mehrdad Heidari, Ghodratollah Seifossadat, Morteza Razaz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, a new method based on artificial neural network (ANN) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is proposed for electrical islanding detection. Transient signals produced during an event are used in the proposed method. ANN is trained to classify the transient events as islanding and nonislanding. The required features for classifying are extracted through DWT of voltage and current transient signals. The proposed method is then simulated on a medium voltage distribution system of CIGRE with 2 kinds of DGs. Results show that this method can detect electrical islands more rapidly and accurately.

Improving The Performance Of Primal--Dual Interior-Point Method In Inverse Conductivity Problems, Ashkan Javaherian, Amir Movafeghi, Reza Faghihi, Effat Yahaghi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This study improves the performance of primal--dual interior-point method in inverse conductivity problems via replacing the conventional, complicatedly calculated scalar regularization parameter with a diagonal matrix termed ``multi-regularization parameter matrix'' here. The solution of the PD--IPM depends considerably on the choice of the regularization parameter. Calculation of the optimal regularization parameter, which yields the most accurate solution, is not simple due to the long iterative nature of the algorithm. The objective optimization, which is implemented by minimizing error in the solutions over an extensive range of the regularization parameters, yields the most accurate solution that can be achieved, although this …
Continuous-Time Hopfield Neural Network-Based Optimized Solution To 2-Channel Allocation Problem, Zekeri̇ya Uykan
Continuous-Time Hopfield Neural Network-Based Optimized Solution To 2-Channel Allocation Problem, Zekeri̇ya Uykan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The channel allocation problem in cellular radio systems is NP-complete, and thus its general solution is not known for even the 2-channel case. It is well known that the link gain system matrix (or received-signal power system matrix) of the radio network is (and may be highly) asymmetric, and that as the Hopfield neural network is applied to optimization problems, its weight matrix should be symmetric. The main contribution of this paper is as follows: turning the channel allocation problem into a maxCut graph partitioning problem, we propose a simple and effective continuous-time Hopfield neural network-based solution by determining its …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Microcalcification detection is a very important issue in early diagnosis of breast cancer. Generally physicians use mammogram images for this task; however, sometimes analyzing these images become a hard task because of problems in images such as high brightness values, dense tissues, noise, and insufficient contrast level. In this paper, we present a novel technique for the task of microcalcification detection. This technique consists of three steps. The first step is focused on removing pectoral muscle and unnecessary parts from the mammogram images by using cellular neural networks (CNNs), which makes this a novel process. In the second step, we …

Emg Classification In Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome And Periodic Limb Movement Syndrome Patients By Using Wavelet Packet Transform And Extreme Learning Machine, Necmetti̇n Sezgi̇n
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Electromyogram (EMG) signals, measured at the skin surface, provide crucial access to the muscle tones of a body. Some diseases, such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and periodic limb movement syndrome (PLMS), are closely associated with the electrical activity of muscle tones. In this paper, a hybrid model containing wavelet packet transform (WPT) plus an extreme learning machine (ELM) was proposed to classify EMG signals in OSAS and PLMS patients. At first, the WPT was used to extract the features of the EMG signal, and then these features were fed to the ELM classifier. The mean classification accuracy of …

A Comparative Study Of Denoising Semg Signals, Ulvi̇ Başpinar, Volkan Yusuf Şenyürek, Bariş Doğan, Hüseyi̇n Selçuk Varol
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Denoising of surface electromyography (sEMG) signals plays a vital role in sEMG-based mechatronics applications and diagnosis of muscular diseases. In this study, 3 different denoising methods of sEMG signals, empirical mode decomposition, discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and median filter, are examined. These methods are applied to 5 different levels of noise-added synthetic sEMG signals. For the DWT-based denoising technique, 40 different wavelet functions, 4 different threshold-selection-rules, and 2 threshold-methods are tested iteratively. Three different window-sized median filters are applied as well. The SNR values of denoised synthetic signals are calculated, and the results are used to select DWT and median …

A Model-Based Edge Estimation Method With Increased Edge Localization Accuracy For Medical Images, Mehmet Öztürk, Temel Kayikçioğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This study proposes an improved method based on a nonlinear parametric model for intensity profile to increase the edge localization accuracy in medical images gathered from different imaging modalities. The edge model consists of three parameters associated with an edge point. It also takes into account local background intensity, noise, and blurring. The Marquardt-Levenberg algorithm is used to estimate the parameters because of its accuracy and good convergence rate. Performance of the proposed method is tested quantitatively by comparing the results with those of the well-known active contour method on synthetic vessel images. Qualitative comparisons on real MRI, coronary angiography, …

Regulation Of Methane Gas Output From An Anaerobic Reactor System Using Moving Horizon $H_{\Infty }$ Control, Fatma Yildiz Taşcikaraoğlu, Şeref Naci̇ Engi̇n
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, the moving horizon $\mathcal{H}_{\infty }$\textbf{ }control used for tracking a desired methane gas output from an anaerobic wastewater treatment reactor is compared with classical $\mathcal{H}_{\infty }$ control and a proportional-integral-derivative controller. The nonlinear system is first linearized around the set of equilibrium and operating points selected, and then the linear matrix inequalities required to comply with the constraints and guarantee the stability are constructed. Finally, the experimental results are obtained by implementing the control method in a MATLAB environment. It is concluded that moving horizon $\mathcal{H}_{\infty }$ control yields satisfactory results.

Fast Bitwise Pattern-Matching Algorithm For Dna Sequences On Modern Hardware, Giyasetti̇n Özcan, Osman Sabri̇ Ünsal
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We introduce a fast bitwise exact pattern-matching algorithm, which speeds up short-length pattern searches on large-sized DNA databases. Our contributions are two-fold. First, we introduce a novel exact matching algorithm designed specifically for modern processor architectures. Second, we conduct a detailed comparative performance analysis of bitwise exact matching algorithms by utilizing hardware counters. Our algorithmic technique is based on condensed bitwise operators and multifunction variables, which minimize register spills and instruction counts during searches. In addition, the technique aims to efficiently utilize CPU branch predictors and to ensure smooth instruction flow through the processor pipeline. Analyzing letter occurrence probability estimations …

Bifurcation And Dynamics Of A Normal Form Map, Reza Khoshsiar Ghaziani
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This paper investigates the dynamics and stability properties of a so-called planar truncated normal form map. This kind of map is widely used in the applied context, especially in normal form coefficients of n-dimensional maps. We determine analytically the border collision bifurcation curves that characterize the dynamic behaviors of the system. We first analyze stability of the fixed points and the existence of local bifurcations. Our analysis shows the presence of a rich variety of local bifurcations, namely stable fixed points, periodic cycles, quasiperiodic cycles that are constraints to stable attractors called invariant closed curves, and chaos, where dynamics of …

Inhibitory Effects Of Salicylic Acid On A549 Human Lung Adenocarcinoma Cell Viability, Djanan Vejselova, Hati̇ce Mehtap Kutlu
Turkish Journal of Biology
Antiinflammatory drugs, such as salicylic acid and its metabolite acetylsalicylic acid, have been singled out as apoptosis-inducing agents with antitumoral activity. In addition, they reduce the risk of some cancers via an unclear mechanism. In this study, we have investigated the apoptotic, cytotoxic, and growth-inhibiting effects of salicylic acid on A549, the human lung adenocarcinoma, alveolar epithelial cells. Cytotoxicity was tested using the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide) colorimetric assay. We observed the ultrastructural and morphological changes in A549 cells by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal microscopy. Cell viability was decreased by the optimal concentration (IC50) of 6.0 mM salicylic …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Superoxide dismutases (SODs) are critical enzymes protecting cells against toxic superoxide radicals. To date, 3 types of SODs have been identified: Cu-ZnSODs, Fe-MnSODs, and NiSODs. In this study, a genome-wide analysis was performed in Sorghum bicolor to characterize SOD genes and proteins. Using several bioinformatics tools, we characterized a total of 8 SOD genes from the Sorghum genome. Gene structure, chromosomal distribution, tissue specific expression, conserved domain, and phylogenetic analyses of SOD genes were carried out. Additionally, 3-dimensional structures were determined and compared within each SbSOD protein. Chromosomal distributions revealed that the highest number of SOD genes was on chromosomes …

E-Microsatellite Markers For Some Naturally Occurring Salvia Species In The Mediterranean Region, Ayşe Gül İnce, Mehmet Karaca
Turkish Journal of Biology
The genus Salvia L. contains about 1000 species, more than 40 of which are endemic to the Mediterranean region. Species boundaries and classifications of this genus have been mainly conducted based on morphological and anatomical characteristics. Although genomic and genic microsatellites are commonly used in a variety of genetic studies in many plant and animal species, their use has been limited in Salvia species. This research was undertaken to study microsatellite contents of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) and develop a new set of expressed-microsatellite (e-microsatellite) markers using the GenBank databases. In in silico studies of the research, microsatellites were identified …

Efficient Entrapment Of Kluyveromyces Marxianus Dbkkuy-103 In Polyvinyl Alcohol Hydrogel For Ethanol Production From Sweet Sorghum Juice, Kanchana Nonthasen, Weera Piyatheerawong, Pornthap Thanonkeo
Turkish Journal of Biology
The aim of this investigation was to optimize immobilization conditions to entrap Kluyveromyces marxianus DBKKUY-103 during ethanol fermentation from sweet sorghum juice using a response surface methodology. The effects and interactions of variables involved in cell entrapment using polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate were studied through a fractional factorial design. The results suggested that the primary variables involved in cell entrapment that significantly affected ethanol fermentation were sodium sulfate concentration, polyvinyl alcohol, and sodium alginate contents (P < 0.01). Subsequently, these variables were optimized for the preparation of cell entrapment based on response surface methodology and using central composite design. The results indicate that cell entrapment can achieve an ethanol concentration of 81.56 g L^{-1} under the following optimal conditions: bead gel diameter of 4.0 mm, calcium chloride concentration of 0.3 M, polyvinyl alcohol content of 10.09% (w v^{-1}), sodium alginate content of 3.39% (w v^{-1}), and sodium sulfate concentration of 0.44 M. Furthermore, statistical analysis of the model reveals that it adequately fit the experimental data (P < 0.01, R^2 = 0.9879). Therefore, this model can be used to efficiently prepare entrapped cells for ethanol production.

Activity Of Antioxidant Enzymes In The Liver Of Wild Boars (Sus Scrofa) From A Selenium-Deficient Area Depending On Sex, Age, And Season Of The Year, Dorota Jankowiak, Renata Pilarczyk, Radoslaw Drozd, Bogumila Pilarczyk, Agnieszka Tomza-Marciniak, Gabriela Wysocka, Izabella Rzad, Arleta Drozd, Jaroslaw Kuba
Turkish Journal of Biology
The aim of this study was to compare the activity of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and total and selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (total GSH-Px and Se-GSH-Px) in the liver of wild boars (Sus scrofa) selected from a selenium-deficient area with respect to season of the year, sex, and age. Only season had a significant effect on liver Se content. Liver selenium concentration in the wild boars was highest in spring (0.292 µg/g wet weight) and lowest in winter (0.185 µg/g wet weight) (P < 0.05). The highest mean activity of total GSH-Px, Se-GSH-Px, and CAT (404.0, 309.9, and 1170.0 U/mg protein, respectively) was found in the spring season, and the respective highest mean activity of SOD was found during autumn (31.5 U/mg protein). Females showed markedly higher mean activities of total GSH-Px (388.2 and 314.7 U/mg protein) and CAT (1151.0 and 765.8 U/mg protein) compared to males. In comparison to other groups of animals, those aged between 1 and 1.5 years were characterized by higher mean activity of total GSH-Px and Se-GSH-Px, and those over 2 years of age showed higher activity of CAT and SOD. The analysis showed that the strongest oxidative stress and the greatest risk of peroxidative damage to the liver occurred during the winter.

Turkish Journal of Biology
Microsatellites are considered the marker of choice in modern research. However, there is no application of microsatellites in the research on the genus Thymus due to the scarcity of specific primer pairs. Using in silico data of several genera in the family Lamiaceae, 23 microsatellite primer pairs (LT) were developed and evaluated in 48 samples representing 9 species and subspecies of the genus Thymus. Codominant and multiallelic LT microsatellite markers were not only useful in the determination of genetic structure and variation within and between the species but also were powerful taxonomic aids in the molecular phylogeny of Thymus L. …

A New Method For Segmentation Of Microscopic Images On Activated Sludge, Hali̇me Boztoprak, Yüksel Özbay
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Activated sludge samples were taken from the Konya Wastewater Treatment Plant. Two hundred images for each sample were captured by a systematic examination of the slides. Segmentation of microscopic images is a challenging process due to lack of focus. Therefore, adjustment of the focus is required for every movement of the mobile stage. Because the mobile stage does not have the z axis, the focus cannot be adjusted. A new method that uses automatic segmentation of the captured images is developed for solving this problem. The proposed method is not dependent on image content, has minimal computation complexity, and is …

Comparison Of Thiopental And Ketamine+Xylazine Anesthesia Inischemia/Reperfusion-Induced Arrhythmias In Rats, Ersöz Gonca
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: To investigate the influence of thiopental (85 mg/kg, intraperitoneally (ip)), and ketamine+xylazine (ketamine 75 mg/kg and xylazine 8 mg/kg, ip) anesthesia on the incidence and duration of ischemia/reperfusion-induced arrhythmias. Materials and methods: Myocardial ischemia was induced by a 6-min ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery, followed by a 6-min reperfusion. Measurements were taken of the incidence and duration of ventricular arrhythmias, the mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate, and the pressure rate-product (as an index of myocardial oxygen consumption). Results: The arrhythmia score and the incidence of ventricular fibrillation and tachycardia were significantly decreased in the …

Background/aim: The effectiveness of assessing volume load via bioimpedance in pediatric patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS) was investigated. Materials and methods: Patients with NS (n = 34) were compared with healthy controls (n = 20). The inferior vena cava index and inferior vena cava collapsibility index (IVCCI) scores were determined for all subjects. Bioimpedance measurements were used to directly determine volume load. Clinical findings, relative fluid load, and echocardiographic measurements were determined and compared with bioimpedance in calculating volume load. Results: The sensitivity and specificity of bioimpedance in determining volume load were found to be 65% and 90%, respectively. IVCCI …

Background/aim: Methotrexate (MTX) has been widely used for treatment of cancer and rheumatoid arthritis, but its use has been limited by its nephrotoxicity. This study was carried out to determine whether garlic exerts a protective effect against MTX-induced nephrotoxicity. Materials and methods: Nephrotoxicity was induced in rats after a single i.p. injection of MTX (20 mg/kg). Garlic extract (1 mL/100 g b.w.) was given orally for 7 days before and after MTX administration. Serum samples were collected to evaluate urea, creatinine, sodium, phosphorous, potassium, and calcium. Reduced glutathione, catalase, adenosine deaminase, nitric oxide, and malondialdehyde were measured in renal tissue. …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: To investigate the myocardial expression profile of aquaporin 1 (AQP1) in rats after severe burns. Materials and methods: Ninety healthy male adult Wistar rats were randomly assigned to the following treatments: sham operation (control group, n = 6), immediate fluid resuscitation treatment post scalding (IF group, n = 42), and delayed fluid resuscitation treatment after scalding (DF group, n = 42). At 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 120 h after scalding, myocardial water contents were assayed and AQP1 expressions were detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot. The AQP levels in the myocardium at 12 …
