Prolonged exposure to oxidative stress causes Acute Lung Injury (ALI) and significantly impairs pulmonary function. Previously we have demonstrated that mitochondrial dysfunction is a key pathological factor in hyperoxic ALI. While it is known that hyperoxia induces the production of stable, but toxic 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) molecule, it is unknown how the reactive aldehyde disrupts mitochondrial function. Our previous in vivo study indicated that exposure to hyperoxia significantly increases 4-HNE-Protein adducts, as well as levels of MDA in total lung homogenates. Based on the in vivo studies, we explored the effects of 4-HNE in human small airway epithelial cells (SAECs). Human …
The Security Council's Maritime Piracy Resolutions: A Critical Assessment, Yaron Gottlieb
The Security Council's Maritime Piracy Resolutions: A Critical Assessment, Yaron Gottlieb
Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols 1-28:1 (1992-2019)
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has been among the most active international actors in addressing maritime piracy. Notably, within a relatively short timespan (June 2008 - November 2012), it has unanimously adopted a significant number of Resolutions dedicated entirely to the surge in this criminal phenomenon. The piracy Resolutions are multifaceted and contain a number of innovative aspects, at least some of which have gone relatively unnoticed. Notably, it is the first time that a crime of ordinary law characteristics has been the focus of Resolutions adopted under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. This article explores the various …

Free, But Still Behind Bars: Reading The Illinois Post-Conviction Hearing Act To Allow Any Person Convicted Of A Crime To Raise A Claim Of Actual Innocence, 35 B.C. J. L. & Soc. Just. 1 (2015), Hugh Mundy
UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship
As the number of wrongfully convicted prisoners who are subsequently exonerated continues to rise, the importance of access to post-conviction relief also increases. Under the Illinois Post-Conviction Hearing Act, this access is restricted to petitioners who are currently imprisoned or otherwise facing a restraint on their liberty. Persons convicted of a crime who have completed their sentence are barred from pursuing post-conviction relief under the Act, regardless of the existence of exculpatory evidence that supports their innocence. Removing this procedural roadblock and interpreting the Act broadly to allow any person convicted of a crime to raise a claim of actual …

This essay challenges the conventional wisdom that prohibitions against government-condoned child-sex slavery have attained non- derogable, peremptory status under international law. Much to the utter shock of field investigators and human rights experts, boy sex slavery has evolved into a constitutive and central feature of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (Afghanistan) because of a customary practice commonly referred to as bacha bazi.

The Relationship Between Sexual Functioning And Sleep Quality In A Female Undergraduate Student Sample, Alexander Kuka
The Relationship Between Sexual Functioning And Sleep Quality In A Female Undergraduate Student Sample, Alexander Kuka
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
A relative lack of literature exists regarding the relationship between sexual functioning and sleep quality in women. The current study assessed these constructs in a sample of 260 undergraduate female students via online administration of relevant measures for sleep quality, sexual functioning, stress, and medical conditions and prescription medications. The relationship between sleep quality and sexual functioning was positive but not significant, even when controlling for relevant variables such as stress. As such, future research might seek to clarify this relationship and to identify variables that mediate or moderate this relationship.
The Influence Of Perceived Similarity, Affect And Trust On The Performance Of Student Learning Groups, Jennifer Louise Lacewell
The Influence Of Perceived Similarity, Affect And Trust On The Performance Of Student Learning Groups, Jennifer Louise Lacewell
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This study examined trust as one of the ways to improve satisfaction and performance in face-to-face student learning groups. A model was developed where trust mediates the relationship between perceived similarity, affect, and individual outcomes of satisfaction and performance (grades). Perceived similarity is positively related to trust, meaning that when students perceive themselves as similar to their group members they will be more likely to trust those group members. Negative affect was also negatively related to trust, but only in the beginning of the semester the group project/discussion. Positive affect was not related to trust. This suggests negative affect is …
Against Immutability, Jessica A. Clarke
Against Immutability, Jessica A. Clarke
Articles
Courts often hold that antidiscrimination law protects “immutable” characteristics, like sex and race. In a series of recent cases, gay rights advocates have persuaded courts to expand the concept of immutability to include not just those traits an individual cannot change, but also those considered too important for anyone to be asked to change. Sexual orientation and religion are paradigmatic examples. This Article critically examines this new concept of immutability, asking whether it is fundamentally different from the old one and how it might apply to characteristics on the borders of employment discrimination law’s protection, such as obesity, pregnancy, and …
A Retrospective Analysis On Quality Safety Outcomes In Patients Who Boarded In The Emergency Department With Syncope Or Near Syncope: Comparison Of Patient Bed Location And Admitting Service Area, Tamala S. Bradham
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Patients presenting with the primary complaint of syncope or near syncope (PSNS) in the emergency department (ED) represents 11.9 million annual visits nationally with an estimated annual cost of over $2.4 billion. With an increase in ED patient visits and limited inpatient bed availability, patients are "boarding" in the ED for extended periods of time. Our aim was to assess whether first available bed assignment, regardless of the admitting service area, would negatively affect major quality patient safety indicators for PSNS. We completed a retrospective cohort study of 659 patients who visited a US southeast academic medical center over a …

Perceived Social Support And Self-Care In Patients Hospitalized With Heart Failure, Lyne Chamberlain
Perceived Social Support And Self-Care In Patients Hospitalized With Heart Failure, Lyne Chamberlain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Problem: Heart failure is the most frequent cause for hospital readmissions in Medicare recipients, with an estimated annual cost of $12 billion. Heart failure hospitalizations are also an independent risk factor for increased mortality. Self-care, thought to be enhanced by perceived social support, is key to managing this syndrome, and up to 50% of readmissions are considered the result of inadequate self-care. Purpose: To evaluate perceived social support and self-care characteristics of patients hospitalized with an exacerbation of heart failure, and to compare these characteristics with a study of ambulatory patients with heart failure. In addition, to assess the relationship …

Way Of The Butterfly: A Journey Towards Transformation Through Self-Portraits In-Between, Masami Koshikawa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It has not been easy for me to talk about myself or describe my feelings or thoughts. Coming from Japan, a collective society, we typically are not raised to do so. Throughout the MFA program at UCF, I have shared my feelings and thoughts through my work. It is important to discuss and inform others of our cultural similarities and differences so that we may gain a better understanding of each other. This process has helped me grow not only on an artistic level, but also on a personal level. My journey towards integration has led me to a meaningful …
Body Mass Bias Mitigation For Females In Military Physical Readiness Testing Through Load Carriage Implementation, Aaron Yeaton
Body Mass Bias Mitigation For Females In Military Physical Readiness Testing Through Load Carriage Implementation, Aaron Yeaton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The US Military requires specific fitness testing, known as the Physical Readiness Test (PRT), for its members to determine their overall fitness levels. The test currently being used has been shown to have bias towards heavier mass individuals of up to 20%. Prior research has been completed and several recommendations have been made to eliminate mass bias, but this has been conducted almost exclusively on males. There is very little data and research on military physical fitness testing for women besides combat specific evolution exercises. A possibility exists to eliminate the bias for females through implementing load carriage during PRT …
Evaluation Of Strength And Hydraulic Properties Of Buried Pipe Systems Used For Stormwater Harvesting, Mario Samson Mena
Evaluation Of Strength And Hydraulic Properties Of Buried Pipe Systems Used For Stormwater Harvesting, Mario Samson Mena
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Water scarcity has been identified as a global issue. Both water harvesting and an efficient water piping system are some of the important factors to meet the water demand. In this study, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes used as an underground storage was evaluated and a Microsoft EXCEL based model was developed, called PIPE-R Model. To study the structural integrity of the pipes, laboratory and field testing were conducted. For the water harvesting, UCF Stormwater Management Academy designed an EXCEL based model to simulate the system's performance to store and redistribute water for an average year. The purpose of PIPE-R Model …

Investigating The Effect Of Stratospheric Radiation On Seed Germination And Growth, B. N. Fong, K. V. Newhouse, M. J. Huss, E. Roberts, J. T. Kennon, H. Ali
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Three seed types: bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), corn (Zea mays) and radish (Raphanus sativus) were flown in a high altitude weather balloon into the mid-stratosphere to investigate the effects of high altitude radiation on germination success and seedling growth. After recovering and planting the seeds, the bean seeds showed lower germination success with exposure to high altitude radiation, and consequently stunted seedling growth. Cord and radish seeds experienced a statistically significant positive effect on germination success form radiation exposure compared to control seeds, but negative effect on seedling growth. Overall, the field experiments presented here support laboratory studies that show radiation …
Selection Of A Realistic Viscous Vortex Tangential Velocity Profile For Computer Simulation Of Vortex-Structure Interaction, M. N. Strasser, R. P. Selvam
Selection Of A Realistic Viscous Vortex Tangential Velocity Profile For Computer Simulation Of Vortex-Structure Interaction, M. N. Strasser, R. P. Selvam
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Structure loading by vortices is a relevant phenomenon in numerous fields of engineering significance. Computer modelling is a powerful tool that can be used to study the loading produced on structures by impacting vortices. Realistic simulation of vortex-loading of structures necessitates the use of a realistic vortex tangential velocity profile (TVP). The present study compiles measured TVPs from various types of experimentally-produced vortices as well as real-world tornado and hurricane vortices. The measured TVPs are compared with commonly-used, analytical TVPs. Analytical TVPs that realistically represent the range of measured TVPs are identified and selected for use in future computer simulation …

Case Of Frugivory In A Green Treefrog (Hyla Cinerea) From Northeastern Arkansas, C. S. Thigpen, S. E. Trauth, T. D. Marsico
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
An adult green treefrog (Hyla cinerea) was collected in mid-September 2014 from Jonesboro, Craighead County, Arkansas. Contents included the remains of a beetle and two fruits. The contents were photographed, measured, and identified to the lowest achievable taxonomic level. The beetle was identified as a spotted cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpuncta howardi Barber [Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae]). The fruits were identified as Persicaria sp. (likely P.punctata (Elliot) Small; Polygonaceae) and Oryza sativa L. (Poaceae). Fruits in the stomachs of frogs are rarely reported in the literature, but could represent possible mechanisms for seed dispersal in plants. It is unknown if frogs select to …
Low-Level Mercury Causes Inappropriate Activation In T And B Lymphocytes In The Absence Of Antigen Stimulation, K. L. Weigand, J. L. Reno, B. M. Rowley
Low-Level Mercury Causes Inappropriate Activation In T And B Lymphocytes In The Absence Of Antigen Stimulation, K. L. Weigand, J. L. Reno, B. M. Rowley
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The immune system primarily utilizes two cell types for adaptive immunity: T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes. T lymphocytes are activated when antigen presenting cells (APCs) present antigen to membrane-bound T cell receptors. B lymphocytes are activated when an antigen binds to receptors embedded in the plasma membrane. In both T and B cells this antigen binding crosslinks the receptor complexes and initiates the signal transduction cascade. These cascades frequently consist of a series of intracellular molecules becoming phosphorylated in a step-wise fashion. Once activated, these cells differentiate into effector cells that clear out the stimulating antigen. Mercury, which is a …

Foraging Behavior Of Swainson's Thrushes (Catharus Ustulatus) During Spring Migration Through Arkansas, S. Wiley, R. Kannan, D. A. James, A. Deshwal
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Foraging behavior of Swainson’s Thrushes on spring migration was studied in western Arkansas in the spring of 2013 and 2014. Observations were made in two forested field sites, one of them urban and the other suburban. The former had a significantly higher woody stem area (cm2) than the latter. For each foraging observation, the following three parameters were noted: Foraging Stratum (Ground, Shrub, Sapling, Sub canopy, and Canopy); Foraging Substrate (Ground/Litter, Herb, Foliage, Bark, and Air); and Foraging Maneuver (Glean, Probe, Dive/Glean, Hover, Jump Hover, and Hawking). We tested the hypotheses that these foraging variables differed significantly between the urban …
