Anti-Nmda Receptor Encephalitis In A Patient With Previous Psychosis And Neurological Abnormalities: A Diagnostic Challenge, R. David Heekin, Maria C. Catalano, Alfred T. Frontera, Glenn Catalano

Neurology Faculty Publications

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor encephalitis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by IgG autoantibodies directed against the NR1 subunit of the NMDA glutamate receptor. Psychiatric symptoms are common and include psychosis, mania, depressed mood, aggression, and speech abnormalities. Neurological symptoms such as seizures, decreased responsiveness, dyskinesias, and other movement abnormalities and/or autonomic instability are frequently seen as well. We present the case of a woman who was followed up at our facility for over 14 years for the treatment of multiple neuropsychiatric symptoms. Initially, she presented with paresthesias, memory loss, and manic symptoms. Nine years later, she presented to our facility again, …

Two Artificial Neural Networks For Modeling Discrete Survival Time Of Censored Data, Taysseer Sharaf, Chris P. Tsokos Jan 2015

Two Artificial Neural Networks For Modeling Discrete Survival Time Of Censored Data, Taysseer Sharaf, Chris P. Tsokos

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Artificial neural network (ANN) theory is emerging as an alternative to conventional statistical methods in modeling nonlinear functions. The popular Cox proportional hazard model falls short in modeling survival data with nonlinear behaviors. ANN is a good alternative to the Cox PH as the proportionality of the hazard assumption and model relaxations are not required. In addition, ANN possesses a powerful capability of handling complex nonlinear relations within the risk factors associated with survival time. In this study, we present a comprehensive comparison of two different approaches of utilizing ANN in modeling smooth conditional hazard probability function. We use real …

Tragic Choices In Ideological Battles: Gay Rights Versus Religious Freedom, Anthony Walsh Jan 2015

Tragic Choices In Ideological Battles: Gay Rights Versus Religious Freedom, Anthony Walsh

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

A major domestic issue in the United States today is the battle between gay rights and religious liberty. It is an issue often framed as a zero-sum battle where one side must lose and be faced with a tragic choice. Thus far, it has only been religious individuals who believe marriage is only supposed to be between men and women, and who act on this belief who have been made to make this choice. Religious believers connected to the wedding industry who refuse to facilitate gay weddings have been faced with the tragic choice of either abandoning their faith or …

Uncertainty Considerations In Calibration And Validation Of Hydrologic And Water Quality Models, J. Hernandez Jan 2015

Uncertainty Considerations In Calibration And Validation Of Hydrologic And Water Quality Models, J. Hernandez

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hydrologic and water quality models (HWQMs) are increasingly used to support decisions on various environmental issues and policy directions for present and future scenarios, at scales varying from watershed to continental levels. Uncertainty associated with such models may affect the ability of the models to accurately evaluate the response of complex systems, leading to misguided assessments and risk management decisions. Current well-known HWQMs contain numerous input parameters, many of which are not known with certainty, and in other cases model users can hardly recognize the genesis of uncertainty. Uncertainty in data, model structure, and model parameters can propagate throughout model …

Transforming The Legal Studies Classroom: Clickers And Engagement, Susan Park, Denise Farag Jan 2015

Transforming The Legal Studies Classroom: Clickers And Engagement, Susan Park, Denise Farag

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Teaching is not just delivering lectures but anything we might do that helps and encourages students to learn.

Envision your typical business law or legal environment of business classroom, filled with students. As class begins, most students are alert and attentive to the instructor. However, after class is under way, some students have diverted their attention elsewhere. A few are looking intently at their laptop screens, which contain material that may (or may not) be related to business law. Others are looking at their phones. While many are still listening to the instructor, a few might be whispering to neighbors, …

An Ipm Scouting Guide For Common Problems Of Legume Vegetables In Kentucky, Nicole Ward Gauthier, Ricardo Bessin, Shubin Saha, Shawn Wright, Cheryl A. Kaiser Jan 2015

An Ipm Scouting Guide For Common Problems Of Legume Vegetables In Kentucky, Nicole Ward Gauthier, Ricardo Bessin, Shubin Saha, Shawn Wright, Cheryl A. Kaiser

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Long before the term “sustainable” became a household word, farmers were implementing sustainable practices in the form of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. IPM uses a combination of biological, cultural, physical, and chemical methods to reduce and/or manage pest populations. These strategies are used to minimize environmental risks, economic costs, and health hazards. Pests are “managed” (but rarely eliminated entirely) to reduce their negative impact on the crop.

Scouting and monitoring diseases, insects, weeds, and abiotic disorders in order to identify potential problems before they result in serious losses is essential to the IPM approach. Proper identification is essential to …

Organic Corn Production In Kentucky, Michael Bomford, Lee Meyer, Thomas Sikora, William Martin, Sam Mcneill, Michael D. Montross, Edwin L. Ritchey, Chad Lee

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

The number of organic dairy cows in Kentucky has been steadily increasing for years, yet there’s not enough organic corn produced in the state to feed the growing herds. In fact, most of the organic corn consumed in Kentucky is produced outside of the state. The growing organic livestock and poultry industries in Kentucky face the same feed constraints. In short, a new market has developed in the state, but few local farmers are taking advantage of it.

Cellular Defects Caused By Hypomorphic Variants Of The Bloom Syndrome Helicase Gene Blm, Vivek M. Shastri, Kristina H. Schmidt Jan 2015

Cellular Defects Caused By Hypomorphic Variants Of The Bloom Syndrome Helicase Gene Blm, Vivek M. Shastri, Kristina H. Schmidt

Molecular Biosciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Bloom syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by extraordinary cancer incidence early in life and an average life expectancy of ~27 years. Premature stop codons in BLM, which encodes a DNA helicase that functions in DNA double-strand-break repair, make up the vast majority of Bloom syndrome mutations, with only 13 single amino acid changes identified in the syndrome. Sequencing projects have identified nearly one hundred single nucleotide variants in BLM that cause amino acid changes of uncertain significance.

METHODS AND RESULTS: Here, in addition to identifying five BLM variants incapable of complementing certain defects of Bloom syndrome cells, …

Temperature And Leaf Nitrogen Affect Performance Of Plant Species At Range Overlap, Nicholas A. Fisichelli, Artur Stefanski, Lee E. Frelich, Peter B. Reich Jan 2015

Temperature And Leaf Nitrogen Affect Performance Of Plant Species At Range Overlap, Nicholas A. Fisichelli, Artur Stefanski, Lee E. Frelich, Peter B. Reich

United States National Park Service: Publications

Plant growth and survival near range limits are likely sensitive to small changes in environmental conditions. Warming temperatures are causing range shifts and thus changes in species composition within range-edge ecotones; however, it is often not clear how temperature alters performance. Through an observational field study, we assessed temperature and nitrogen effects on survival and growth of co-occurring temperate (Acer saccharum) and boreal (Abies balsamea) saplings across their overlapping range limits in the Great Lakes region, USA. Across sampled ranges of soil texture, soil pH, and precipitation, it appears that temperature affects leaf nitrogen for A. …

State-Space Modeling To Support Management Of Brucellosis In The Yellowstone Bison Population, N. Thompson Hobbs, Chris Geremia, John Treanor, Rick Wallen, P. J. White, Mevin B. Hooten, Jack C. Rhyan Jan 2015

State-Space Modeling To Support Management Of Brucellosis In The Yellowstone Bison Population, N. Thompson Hobbs, Chris Geremia, John Treanor, Rick Wallen, P. J. White, Mevin B. Hooten, Jack C. Rhyan

United States National Park Service: Publications

The bison (Bison bison) of the Yellowstone ecosystem, USA, exemplify the difficulty of conserving large mammals that migrate across the boundaries of conservation areas. Bison are infected with brucellosis (Brucella abortus) and their seasonal movements can expose livestock to infection. Yellowstone National Park has embarked on a program of adaptive management of bison, which requires a model that assimilates data to support management decisions. We constructed a Bayesian state-space model to reveal the influence of brucellosis on the Yellowstone bison population. A frequency-dependent model of brucellosis transmission was superior to a density-dependent model in predicting out-of-sample …

Can Translocated Native Fishes Retain Their Trophic Niche When Confronted With A Resident Invasive?, Jonathan J. Spurgeon, Craig P. Paukert, Brian D. Healyy, Cheryl A. Kelley, Daniel P. Whiting Jan 2015

Can Translocated Native Fishes Retain Their Trophic Niche When Confronted With A Resident Invasive?, Jonathan J. Spurgeon, Craig P. Paukert, Brian D. Healyy, Cheryl A. Kelley, Daniel P. Whiting

United States National Park Service: Publications

Diet interactions between native and non-native fishes may influence the establishment of native species within their historical range (i.e., reintroduction). Therefore, we illustrated the food web structure of and followed the transition of the federally endangered humpback chub Gila cypha into a novel food web following translocation and determined the potential for a non-native species, rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, to influence translocation success. Humpback chub and rainbow trout used resources high in the food web and assimilated similar proportions of native fishes, suggesting non-native rainbow trout may occupy an ecological role similar to humpback chub. Subsequently, humpback chub may …

Translocation Of Humpback Chub Into Tributary Streams Of The Colorado River: Implications For Conservation Of Large- River Fishes, Jonathan Spurgeon, Craig P. Paukert, Brian D. Healy, Melissa Trammell, Dave Speas, Emily Omana-Smith Jan 2015

Translocation Of Humpback Chub Into Tributary Streams Of The Colorado River: Implications For Conservation Of Large- River Fishes, Jonathan Spurgeon, Craig P. Paukert, Brian D. Healy, Melissa Trammell, Dave Speas, Emily Omana-Smith

United States National Park Service: Publications

The Humpback Chub Gila cypha, a large-bodied, endangered cyprinid endemic to the Colorado River basin, is in decline throughout most of its range due largely to anthropogenic factors. Translocation of Humpback Chub into tributaries of the Colorado River is one conservation activity that may contribute to the expansion of the species’ current range and eventually provide population redundancy. We evaluated growth, survival, and dispersal following translocation of approximately 900 Humpback Chub over a period of 3 years (2009, 2010, and 2011) into Shinumo Creek, a tributary stream of the Colorado River within Grand Canyon National Park. Growth and condition …

Mitochondrial Dna Variation Reveals A Sharp Genetic Break Within The Distribution Of The Blue Land Crab Cardisoma Guanhumi In The Western Central Atlantic, Maria Rosimere Xavier Amaral, Marc Albrecht, Alan Shane Mckinley, Adriana Márcia Ferreira De Carvalho, Severino Cavalcante De Sousa Junior, Fabio Mendonç Diniz

United States National Park Service: Publications

The blue land crab Cardisoma guanhumi is widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical estuarine regions in the Western Central Atlantic (WCA). Patterns of population genetic structure and historical demographics of the species were assessed by mtDNA control region sequence analysis to examine the connectivity among five populations (n = 97) within the region for future conservation strategies and decision-making of fishery management. A total of 234 polymorphic nucleotides were revealed within the sequence region, which have defined 93 distinct haplotypes. No dominant mtDNA haplotypes were found but instead a distribution of a few low-frequency recurrent haplotypes with …

The Implications Of Hiv Treatment On The Hiv-Malaria Coinfection Dynamics: A Modeling Perspective, F. Nyabadza, B. T. Bekele, Megan A. Rúa, D. M. Malonza, N. Chiduku, M. Kgosimore Jan 2015

The Implications Of Hiv Treatment On The Hiv-Malaria Coinfection Dynamics: A Modeling Perspective, F. Nyabadza, B. T. Bekele, Megan A. Rúa, D. M. Malonza, N. Chiduku, M. Kgosimore

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Most hosts harbor multiple pathogens at the same time in disease epidemiology. Multiple pathogens have the potential for interaction resulting in negative impacts on host fitness or alterations in pathogen transmission dynamics. In this paper we develop a mathematical model describing the dynamics of HIV-malaria coinfection. Additionally, we extended our model to examine the role treatment (of malaria and HIV) plays in altering populations’ dynamics. Our model consists of 13 interlinked equations which allow us to explore multiple aspects of HIV-malaria transmission and treatment. We perform qualitative analysis of the model that includes positivity and boundedness of solutions. Furthermore, we …

Ectomycorrhizal Fungal Communities And Enzymatic Activities Vary Across An Ecotone Between A Forest And Field, Megan A. Rúa, Becky Moore, Nicole Hergott, Lily Van, Colin R. Jackson, Jason D. Hoeksema Jan 2015

Ectomycorrhizal Fungal Communities And Enzymatic Activities Vary Across An Ecotone Between A Forest And Field, Megan A. Rúa, Becky Moore, Nicole Hergott, Lily Van, Colin R. Jackson, Jason D. Hoeksema

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Extracellular enzymes degrade macromolecules into soluble substrates and are important for nutrient cycling in soils, where microorganisms, such as ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi, produce these enzymes to obtain nutrients. Ecotones between forests and fields represent intriguing arenas for examining the effect of the environment on ECM community structure and enzyme activity because tree maturity, ECM composition, and environmental variables may all be changing simultaneously. We studied the composition and enzymatic activity of ECM associated with loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) across an ecotone between a forest where P. taeda is established and an old field where P. taeda saplings had been growing …
