Three Is Company: Fixing The Grazing-Land Business Conundrum, Ralph Von Kaufmann Jan 2015

Three Is Company: Fixing The Grazing-Land Business Conundrum, Ralph Von Kaufmann

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Grazing-lands have the largest footprint on the world’s land surface area but this is not reflected in the amount of business conducted on them. The most common land use systems are very land intensive, i.e., they use a lot of land to produce not very much and few jobs. The health of the planet depends on having healthy grazing-lands but there is a perfect storm brewing in which the demand from expanding pastoral communities for more food and jobs cannot be met just by applying good grazing-land management practices. Compatible businesses must be found that can create jobs without increasing …

Combatting Gender Privilege And Recognizing A Woman’S Right To Privacy In Public Spaces: Arguments To Criminalize Catcalling And Creepshots, Marc Tran Jan 2015

Combatting Gender Privilege And Recognizing A Woman’S Right To Privacy In Public Spaces: Arguments To Criminalize Catcalling And Creepshots, Marc Tran

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This comment explores two permutations of entitlement to women’s attention and bodies in public: street harassment (“catcalling”) and upskirt and down-blouse photography (collectively, “creepshots”). Part I is devoted to discussing street harassment—its harms (on an individual and societal scale), legal solutions, and the limits of the law. Part II is devoted to creepshots—their harms, the evolution of the perpetrator, and legal solutions. Both catcalling and creepshots disproportionately impact women. As such, an acknowledgement of gender privilege is a necessary prerequisite to exploring the harms and possible remedies of street harassment and up-skirt photography. There have been various attempts by men …

Background: Prevalence of allergic diseases in infants, whose parents and siblings do not have allergy, is approximately 10% and reaches 20–30% in those with an allergic first-degree relative. Intestinal microbiota may modulate immunologic and inflammatory systemic responses and, thus, influence development of sensitization and allergy. Probiotics have been reported to modulate immune responses and their supplementation has been proposed as a preventive intervention.

Objective: The World Allergy Organization (WAO) convened a guideline panel to develop evidence-based recommendations about the use of probiotics in the prevention of allergy.

Methods: We identified the most relevant clinical questions and performed a systematic review …

Regulation Of Vldl Trafficking By Orp 10, Philip A. Wessels Jan 2015

Regulation Of Vldl Trafficking By Orp 10, Philip A. Wessels

HIM 1990-2015

Of the challenges facing the improvement of human health, none has taken the forefront quite like the endeavor to discover novel treatments for heart disease. As heart disease has now become the leading cause of death throughout the world [1], the medical community has made incredible strides in the mission to treat atherosclerosis which is the major contributor to heart disease. Very Low Density Lipoproteins (VLDL) are secreted by the liver and subsequently converted to Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL). Many factors contribute to the narrowing of the arterial walls, however oxidized LDL is the main factor that leads to the …

A Gender Integrative Conceptualization Of Entrepreneurship, Susan Clark Muntean, Banu Ozkazanc-Pan Jan 2015

A Gender Integrative Conceptualization Of Entrepreneurship, Susan Clark Muntean, Banu Ozkazanc-Pan

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Guided by feminist perspectives, we critique existing approaches to the study of women’s entrepreneurship on epistemological grounds and suggest that the entrepreneurship field needs to recognize gendered assumptions in theorizing. Deploying a feminist framework, we suggest that understanding the “gender gap” in entrepreneurship requires focus on institutional and structural barriers women entrepreneurs face. Existing studies of women entrepreneurs often compare women with men without considering how gender and gender relations impact the very concepts and ideas of entrepreneurship. We propose, therefore, a conceptualization of entrepreneurship that illuminates gender bias and calls attention to the interrelated individual, institutional, and structural barriers …

Population Genetic Structure Of Asclepias Tuberosa In Northwest Iowa: A Comparison Within And Between Remnant Prairies And Commercially Available Seed, Jeffrey T. Ploegstra, Brittany De Ruyter, Tony Jelsma

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Isolated in scattered remnants, less than 0.1% of Iowa’s original tallgrass prairie remains. The small populations remaining are at risk for reduced genetic diversity, inbreeding depression, and outbreeding depression. In light of these concerns, we used microsatellite analysis to assess the genetic structure of butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) populations on prairie remnants in northwest Iowa. We compared remnant populations with a restoration population at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, and with an Oklahoma seed source. Microsatellites identified for use in common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) had sufficient polymorphism information content (PIC) across the butterfly milkweed ( …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Sažetak The effect of high temperature stress on six wheat cultivars exposed to 35–40 °C for 3 h each day for five consecutive days was examined. High temperature significantly affected total proline, soluble protein content, membrane stability index (MSI), yield, and various yield components, and had a direct effect on growth and other physiological attributes of wheat at anthesis and the milky seed stages. The wheat cultivar AS- 2002 achieved better osmotic adjustment by accumulating more leaf proline. Higher MSI was also observed in AS-2002, as well as Inqalab-91. The anthesis growth stage was found to be more sensitive to …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The goal of this research project was to further the development of an electromechanically controlled variable-orifice nozzle by creating an electronic control system and then evaluating that system based on step and ramp inputs. The control system was developed in a programming environment that combined an electronic data acquisition system and actuator with pressure and flow sensors. A proportional, variable-gain (based on system pressure) control system was developed to adjust nozzle flow rates to meet target application rates. The constraints were to achieve settling time of less than 1.0 s, overshoot of less than 10% of maximum flow (or minimum …

The Effects Of Viewing Patient-Related Physiological Data On Students' Mental Health Stigma, Sabrina Kohls Jan 2015

The Effects Of Viewing Patient-Related Physiological Data On Students' Mental Health Stigma, Sabrina Kohls

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Abstract

Figuring out how to reduce the negative stigma of mental illness could prove useful to patients and mental health professionals. Previous research has suggested that emphasizing the biological and physiological components of mental disorders may affect how people with these disorders are perceived. Biogenetic explanations have been shown to lessen stigma towards mentally ill patients in some respects. The present study compared participants’ evaluations of a hypothetical depressed person whose description was accompanied by either an MRI of the patient’s brain or a picture of the patient’s sad face. Analyses compared participants’ responses on three aspects of stigma: social …

Conservation Of Lipid Storage Droplet Proteins In Evolution Of Animalia, Jacob D. Bowman Jan 2015

Conservation Of Lipid Storage Droplet Proteins In Evolution Of Animalia, Jacob D. Bowman

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Lipolysis is a conserved pathway used by organisms for the mobilization of fatty acid (FA) out of triacylglycerol (TAG). Neutral lipids are stored in lipid-storage droplets (LSD) which are in nearly every cell of an organism. LSDs are the location of lipolysis. Perilipin proteins are lipid-droplet associated proteins. Perilipins interact with other proteins such as ATGL that breaks down TAG into FA and DAG. Because of its conservation as a whole system, this suggests that proteins of the same pathway are evolving together. This present study traces the evolutionary history of lipolysis-related proteins amongst individual organisms and classes of organisms …

Racism 4.0, Civity, And Re-Constitution, Palma Joy Strand Jan 2015

Racism 4.0, Civity, And Re-Constitution, Palma Joy Strand

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Racism is deeply imbedded in our culture and can be grouped into four distinct manifestations over the multi-century arc of our nation's history. These manifestations are identified as Racism 1.0, Racism 2.0, Racism 3.0, and-the current "operating system"--Racism 4.0. Racism 1.0 and 2.0 include slavery and the reign of violence and lynching during which Whites sought to control and marginalize Blacks, primarily but not exclusively in the South. In the South, Racism 3.0 took the form of "Jim Crow," legislatively enacted separation by race with "separate but equal" rhetoric and "separate and unequal" reality. The Civil Rights Movement and its …

Pesticide Analysis In Vegetables Using Quechers Extraction And Colorimetric Detection, D. S. G. Neufeld, N. Åkerson, D. Barahona

Virginia Journal of Science

A novel combination of extraction and detection methods is demonstrated for pesticide residue analysis in vegetable samples. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition was used as a simple colorimetric test for organophosphates/carbamates (OP/C), and was tested with extracts from the widely-used QuEChERS extraction method. In the absence of pesticide, diluted (50% with water) acetonitrile did not inhibit enzyme activity, demonstrating the compatibility of this extraction solvent with the AChE inhibition test. QuEChERS extraction of chlorpyrifos-spiked tomato, spinach and lettuce samples indicated a high sensitivity to OP/C, with AChE inhibition occurring in the ppb range. The applicability of this method combination was tested by …
