A Probabilistic Fracture Assessment Of Vertebral Cortical Bone, Tarun Goswami, Isaac Mabe
A Probabilistic Fracture Assessment Of Vertebral Cortical Bone, Tarun Goswami, Isaac Mabe
Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications
Cortical bone is a material with a porous structure. The presence of pores creates local stress concentrations and the likelihood of premature failure. Assuming that pores are present in all bone, vertebral endplates, for example, can subside. Subsidence has taken place at rates as high as 77 percent. A computational probabilistic assessment of the pore size distribution and their contribution to the fracture toughness has been presented in this paper. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to develop and assign random pores. Also the model compared crack sizes to the thickness of the cortical bone present as a limiting case. …
Understanding Automation Surprise: Analysis Of Asrs Reports, Julia Trippe, Robert Mauro
Understanding Automation Surprise: Analysis Of Asrs Reports, Julia Trippe, Robert Mauro
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015
Pilots are frequently surprised by aircraft automation. These include cases in which the automation: 1) produces alerts to anomalies, 2) commands unexpected control manipulations (that may result in flight path deviations), or 3) simply disconnects. Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) reports in which pilots indicated that automation produced unexpected actions were analyzed. Three general conclusions were drawn. First, many factors precipitate automation surprises. These include problems in: the auto-flight system and associated displays and interfaces, other aircraft sensors and systems, and interactions with weather and ATC. Second, inappropriate pilot actions are involved in a large proportion of these events. Third, …
Application Of Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization For Visualization And Quantification Of Human Gastrointestinal Microbiota, Alexander M. Gordon
Application Of Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization For Visualization And Quantification Of Human Gastrointestinal Microbiota, Alexander M. Gordon
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The microbiota of the human gastrointestinal tract is the focus of current research due to their role in human health and disease. Modern methods characterize the communities of gut microbiota through the use of culture independent techniques. Technologies such as microarrays and next generation sequencing (NGS) determine microbial profiles by analyzing the pool of 16S ribosomal small subunit RNA genes in the community. These techniques operate through the measurement of genomic content rather than through direct analysis of cells. This approach predisposes the methods to discrepancies and bias. In contrast, the use of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to analyze …

Sea Level And Turbidity Controls On Mangrove Soil Surface Elevation Change, Catherine E. Lovelock, Maria Fernanda Adame, Vicki Bennion, Matthew Hayes, Ruth Reef, Nadia Santini, Donald R. Cahoon
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Increases in sea level are a threat to seaward fringing mangrove forests if levels of inundation exceed the physiological tolerance of the trees; however, tidal wetlands can keep pace with sea level rise if soil surface elevations can increase at the same pace as sea level rise. Sediment accretion on the soil surface and belowground production of roots are proposed to increase with increasing sea level, enabling intertidal habitats to maintain their position relative to mean sea level, but there are few tests of these predictions in mangrove forests. Here we used variation in sea level and the availability of …

Training Conservation Practitioners To Be Better Decision Makers, Fred Johnson, Mitchell J. Eaton, James H. Williams, Gitte H. Jensen, Jesper Madsen
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Traditional conservation curricula and training typically emphasizes only one part of systematic decision making (i.e., the science), at the expense of preparing conservation practitioners with critical skills in values-setting, working with decision makers and stakeholders, and effective problem framing. In this article we describe how the application of decision science is relevant to conservation problems and suggest how current and future conservation practitioners can be trained to be better decision makers. Though decision-analytic approaches vary considerably, they all involve: (1) properly formulating the decision problem; (2) specifying feasible alternative actions; and (3) selecting criteria for evaluating potential outcomes. Two approaches …

Where Have All The Patent Lawyers Gone? Long Time Passing..., Kenneth L. Port, Molly R. Littman, Lucas Hjelle
Faculty Scholarship
This article pursues two distinct, but related hypotheses. First, as total LSAT takers decline, we expect to see a decline in the number of new attorneys admitted to the patent bar. Second, as the number of new patent attorneys shrinks and the number of women pursuing engineering degrees increases, we expect that the patent bar will become more female.
In order to test these hypotheses, we gathered and collated data from the Law School Admission Counsel (LSAC) regarding students taking the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), …

Faculty Contributions to Books
Neuroimaging has contributed greatly to our understanding of the sensory, motor, and cognitive systems involved in musical processing. Cortical loops connecting auditory with parietal, premotor, and prefrontal cortices are important for encoding pitch and temporal relationships from which music is built and for generating musical expectancies. These circuits are also important for holding information in working memory and for interfacing perceptual and motor representations. Musical imagery recruits auditory areas together with frontal and supplementary motor regions. Musical emotion emerges from the interaction of these systems with the reward circuit. All of these systems are modifiable functionally and structurally following training.
The Indigenous In Peruvian National Identity, Danielle Bartels
The Indigenous In Peruvian National Identity, Danielle Bartels
Undergraduate Research Journal
Indigenous peoples populate countries across the globe. In every country, issues of the national identity of the indigenous are important. With the aid of case studies, we can better comprehend the depth of these problems. Focusing on the intellectual history in a case study of Peru, I aim to understand the antagonistic behaviors against indigenous cultures and how the nation state chose to handle their indigenous population over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

2015-16 Series Brochure - Reimagining Community, University Center For The Humanities
University Center for the Humanities Events
The theme for our speaker series in 2015-16 is Reimagining Community. In a global culture of war, social injustice and environmental calamity, and with our country’s stark racial turmoil and political divisions, reimagining the idea of community—what it means for us now and for our future on this planet—might be the most important first task for all of us as we attempt to address the issues of human healthcare, racial equity, gender roles, feeding the human population, and the idea of the human community. We are all in this planet’s developing story together, regardless of our ideologies, faiths, and perceptions. …

Cyp2a6 Polymorphisms May Strengthen Individualized Treatment For Nicotine Dependence, Yawo M. Akrodou
Cyp2a6 Polymorphisms May Strengthen Individualized Treatment For Nicotine Dependence, Yawo M. Akrodou
Walden Faculty and Staff Publications
Each CYP2A6 gene variant metabolizes nicotine differently depending on its enzymatic activities. The normal nicotine metabolizer CYP2A6*1A is associated with high scores of nicotine dependence (5-10) on the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) scale because it encodes for enzymes that catalyze nicotine 100%. Slow nicotine metabolizers (i.e., CYP2A6*1H, CYP2A6*4A, CYP2A6*9, and CYP2A6*12A) are associated with underrated nicotine metabolizing activity (50%-75%), linking them to low scores for nicotine dependence (0-4) on the FTND scale. In a clinical trial involving the use of bupropion, people who were carriers of slow nicotine metabolizers were found to have a tendency to maintain abstinence …

Glycosylation alterations of cell surface proteins are often observed during the progression of malignancies. The specific cell surface N-glycans were profiled in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with clinical tissues (88 tumor and adjacent normal tissues) and the corresponding serum samples of HCC patients. The level of core-α-1,6-fucosylated triantennary glycan (NA3Fb) increased both on the cell surface and in the serum samples of HCC patients (p < 0.01). Additionally, the change of NA3Fb was not influenced by Hepatitis B virus (HBV)and cirrhosis. Furthermore, the mRNA and protein expression of N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase IVa (GnT-IVa), which was related to the synthesis of the NA3Fb, was substantially increased in HCC tissues. Knockdown of GnT-IVa leads to a decreased level of NA3Fb and decreased ability of invasion and migration in HCC cells. NA3Fb can be regarded as a specific cell surface N-glycan of HCC. The high expression of GnT-IVa is the cause of the abnormal increase of NA3Fb on the HCC cell surface, which regulates cell migration. This study demonstrated the specific N-glycans of the cell surface and the mechanisms of altered glycoform related with HCC. These findings lead to better understanding of the function of glycan and glycosyltransferase in the tumorigenesis, progression and metastasis of HCC.

Mass spectrometry has found a wide variety of applications in many fields of study, such as fundamental chemistry, biological science, food and fuels, advanced materials, etc. Due to its high sensitivity, selectivity and speed, mass spectrometry provides an invaluable tool for direct mixture analysis. When coupled with separation methods, such as gas chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography, analysis of minor components in complex mixtures is possible. In addition to the molecular weight information, mass spectrometers can provide structural information for the ionized analyte molecules. However, mass spectrometric analysis of complex mixtures is not without challenges, such as suitable evaporation/ionization …

Background: Despite their strong increase, the population of the very old, including near-centenarians and centenarians, represent an unstudied and underserved population. Available studies mostly concentrate on predictors of exceptional longevity, but rarely extend their focus to other areas of functioning. Also, little is known about what contributes to experiencing a quality life in very old age. The present population-based study aims at providing a comprehensive picture of key domain of functioning, including physical, cognitive, social and mental function in very old individuals and to determine predictors of mental health indicators.
Methods: A total of 119 individuals aged 95 to 107 …

Multistrain Infections In Metapopulations, Sydney Garmer, Rachel Lynn, Dan Rossi, Alex Capaldi
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
Viruses and bacteria responsible for infectious diseases often mutate and are carried between geographical regions. We consider a mathematical model which begins to account for these factors. We assume two disjoint populations that only occasionally co-mingle, and two strains of a disease present in these populations. Of interest are the equations describing the dynamics of this system, the conditions under which epidemics will occur, and the long term behavior of the system under various initial conditions. We find general conditions under which a state of disease-free equilibrium is stable. Additionally, we find existence of a biologically relevant equilibrium where two …
