The Inner Witch: Channeling And Containing Femininity, Marta Kondratyuk Jan 2015

The Inner Witch: Channeling And Containing Femininity, Marta Kondratyuk

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation addresses the literary witches in American and Russian twentieth century literatures. It investigates why and to what effect images of witches and witchcraft are appropriated by individual authors in different historical situations. My study focuses on literary witches as personification of conspiratorial female power. Witches come in different forms, shapes, ages and colors. They possess contradictory powers. They can be evil or benevolent, old or young, mythological or historical, powerful or vulnerable, repellent or attractive but one constant remains: they are feared. I closely read the authors’ selected texts to argue that literary witches are representations of a …

Evaluation Of The Geochemical Stability Of The Sandia Canyon Wetland, Brian M. Iacona Jan 2015

Evaluation Of The Geochemical Stability Of The Sandia Canyon Wetland, Brian M. Iacona

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Sandia Canyon Wetland is an effluent supported wetland sustained by three National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitted outfalls. The wetland sediments contain an inventory of chromium released from historic operations. Maintaining physical and geochemical stability in the wetland is intended to keep the chromium inventory in its reduced trivalent state to minimize mobility and subsequent offsite migration. Upgrades to the Sanitary Effluent Reclamation Facility (SERF) decreased the amount of water used in nearby cooling towers, and therefore reduced the volume of effluent discharged into the wetland. SERF provides tertiary treatment to treated sanitary effluent creating water of improved …

The Ignatian Pedagogy Paradigm And The Global Imperative Of Biotechnology, Moira A. Gunn, John P. Koeplin S.J., Paul V. Lorton Jr., Michael D. Whitty

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

The potential of the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) is realized in the reflective actions of students after they leave the Jesuit educational setting and go out into the world. With developments in science and technology accelerating, and worldwide dissemination immediate, the imperative to infuse the IPP into areas driven by science and technology is clear. It is this imperative which draws us to the global biotechnology industry. This paper presents a short overview of the industry, describes how “science-business” differs from traditional business, and discusses the process by which the IPP – context, experience, reflection, action and evaluation – has …

Publications and Research

There is a growing demand for genome-scale metabolic reconstructions for plants, fueled by the need to understand the metabolic basis of crop yield and by progress in genome and transcriptome sequencing. Methods are also required to enable the interpretation of plant transcriptome data to study how cellular metabolic activity varies under different growth conditions or even within different organs, tissues, and developmental stages. Such methods depend extensively on the accuracy with which genes have been mapped to the biochemical reactions in the plant metabolic pathways. Errors in these mappings lead to metabolic reconstructions with an inflated number of reactions and …

Eugenics Then And Now: Constitutional Limits On The Use Of Reproductive Screening Technologies, Hannah Lou Jan 2015

Eugenics Then And Now: Constitutional Limits On The Use Of Reproductive Screening Technologies, Hannah Lou

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Advancements in assisted reproductive technologies ("ARTs") have allowed prospective parents to exercise unprecedented control over the reproductive process and their progeny. Among ARTs, prenatal screening and diagnosis is a particularly powerful category of tools due to its mass accessibility, non-invasiveness, and availability before conception and during pregnancy. However, increased adoption of these tools also forces parents and societies to confront a broad range of ethical, legal, and personal questions about how genetic information should be used to screen for or preselect the traits of prospective offspring.

This Note advocates that based on historical experience, previous court decisions, and modern evolution …

The Unconstitutionality Of The Current Housing Arrangements For Intersex Prisoners, Nicole Antonopoulos Jan 2015

The Unconstitutionality Of The Current Housing Arrangements For Intersex Prisoners, Nicole Antonopoulos

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The perpetuation of a binary society with regards to sex creates problems for intersex persons who do not easily categorize as male or female. The current housing and treatment of intersex prisoners are based partly on this classic male-female dichotomy. This Note sheds light on sex as a spectrum, and examines the potential constitutional violations that arise from the current prison housing arrangements and treatment. It also analyzes the experiences of intersex prisoner Miki Ann DiMarco and her constitutional challenges as brought forward in DiMarco v. Wyoming Department of Corrections. Additionally, this Note suggests that intersex discrimination is a form …

Using The Endangered Species Act To Preempt Constitutional Challenges To Gmo Regulation, Caitlin Kelly-Garrick Jan 2015

Using The Endangered Species Act To Preempt Constitutional Challenges To Gmo Regulation, Caitlin Kelly-Garrick

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Scientific studies show that genetically modified organisms ("GMOs") have an adverse impact on biodiversity, especially pollinating species. Enforcement of the laws regulating the introduction of GMOs into the environment has not kept pace with this finding. Under existing judicial interpretation of the GMO regulatory framework, a loophole exists by which no single agency is responsible for assessing the cumulative environmental impacts of GMOs on biodiversity. Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act ("ESA") requires the government to consult with the Fish and Wildlife Service ("FWS") when an action might endanger the continued survival of a species. This paper argues that …

The Coupled Within- And Between-Host Dynamics In The Evolution Of Hiv/Aids In China, Jie Lou, Hongna Zhou, Dong Liang, Zhen Jin, Baojun Song Jan 2015

The Coupled Within- And Between-Host Dynamics In The Evolution Of Hiv/Aids In China, Jie Lou, Hongna Zhou, Dong Liang, Zhen Jin, Baojun Song

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this work, we develop and analyze mathematical models for the coupled within-host and between-host dynamics caricaturing the evolution of HIV/AIDS. The host population is divided into susceptible, the infected without receiving treatment and the infected receiving ART treatment in accordance with China’s Four-Free-One-Care Policy. The within-host model is a typical ODE model adopted from literatures. The between-host model incorporates age-since-infection described by a system of integrodifferential equations. The two models are coupled via the viral load and number of CD4+ T cells of within the hosts. For the between-host model with an arbitrarily selected HIV infected individual, we focus …

Spinal Hemangioblastoma Combined With Pilocytic Astrocytoma, Wei-Qing Li, Xiang Wang, Nan-Zhe Zhong, Ming Yi-Li Jan 2015

Spinal Hemangioblastoma Combined With Pilocytic Astrocytoma, Wei-Qing Li, Xiang Wang, Nan-Zhe Zhong, Ming Yi-Li

Neurosciences

The combination of vascular anomalies with gliomas is rarely seen in the CNS, and is defined as ‘angioglioma’. However, the definition, category, and histopathogenesis of angiogliomas remain controversial. Here, we present an unusual case of spinal hemangioblastoma (HB) combined with pilocytic astrocytoma (PA). Spinal MRI revealed lesions extending from T9 to T12 segments, in a “sandwich-like” fashion. After resection of the tumor, histopathologic study confirmed the diagnosis of HB as well as PA. A comprehensive review of the literature was further conducted. We describe a case of spinal HB combined with PA, in addition we discuss the clinicopathological relationship between …

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report presented significant data and findings about climate change. But the IPCC's working groups' summaries for policymakers avoid making normative statements about the IPCC's findings. The authors, members of the Environmental Law Collaborative, bridge this gap by identifying the normative claims that stem from the working groups' summaries to spark deeper discussion and help shape the IPCC's sixth assessment.

Noncontact Diffuse Correlation Tomography Of Breast Tumor, Lian He Jan 2015

Noncontact Diffuse Correlation Tomography Of Breast Tumor, Lian He

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

Since aggressive cancers are frequently hypermetabolic with angiogenic vessels, quantification of blood flow (BF) can be vital for cancer diagnosis. Our laboratory has developed a noncontact diffuse correlation tomography (ncDCT) system for 3-D imaging of BF distribution in deep tissues (up to centimeters). The ncDCT system employs two sets of optical lenses to project source and detector fibers respectively onto the tissue surface, and applies finite element framework to model light transportation in complex tissue geometries. This thesis reports our first step to adapt the ncDCT system for 3-D imaging of BF contrasts in human breast tumors. A commercial 3-D …

“I Don’T Understand What You’Re Saying!”: Lessons From Three Esl Writing Tutorials, Eun-Young Julia Kim

Journal of Response to Writing

This article presents three case studies that closely examine various types of interactions taking place in writing center tutorials involving newly arrived pre-matriculated ESL writers. By learning what strategies tutors commonly use and how successfully the ESL writers negotiate their goals for the visit and the form and meaning of their text through this sample, this study aims to help identify what characterizes successful tutorials and what unique challenges English language learners might face when interacting with tutors. Results from these case studies show that it is not how many corrections tutors make or suggest for the students’ papers, but …

Coal Combustion and Gasification Products Journal Archive

Increasing fiscal, human, and environmental costs of coal fly ash (FA) management are leading to advocacy for greater beneficial uses of the by-products as soil amendments in agriculture. Greenhouse experiments were conducted in Armour silt loam (ASL) soil that was amended with FA (10%, wt/wt) with and without poultry litter (PL 5 75 mg N/kg). Biomass productivity of eastern gamagrass (GG), a warm-season perennial grass, was measured to serve as complementary biofuel feedstock to switchgrass (SG). FA was obtained from a site at the 2008 ash spill in Kingston, TN. GG and SG were grown individually in 15-cm-wide 3 41-cm-high …

Impact Of Algae Supplemented Diets Combined With Antioxidants On The Nutritional Profile, Quality Attributes, And Storage Stability Of Chicken Breast Meat, Rebecca G. Norcross Jan 2015

Impact Of Algae Supplemented Diets Combined With Antioxidants On The Nutritional Profile, Quality Attributes, And Storage Stability Of Chicken Breast Meat, Rebecca G. Norcross

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

Consumers’ demands for ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are at all-time high. Algae, a common source of PUFAs, and antioxidants are both used as supplements in livestock feeds, are known to affect the overall quality of meat. To implement PUFA deposits into broiler meat, this study evaluated combining antioxidants and algae in broiler feed to enhance the breast meat quality. Broilers were fed diets supplemented with 50 IU Vitamin E or 200 g/ton EconomasE (EcoE, an antioxidant pack) plus 10 IU Vitamin E, with or without 0.5% algae extract (SP-1). The feed oil was partially oxidized soybean oil (POV: 86 …

Determining Soil Texture By Feel, Edwin L. Ritchey, Joshua M. Mcgrath, David Gehring Jan 2015

Determining Soil Texture By Feel, Edwin L. Ritchey, Joshua M. Mcgrath, David Gehring

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Soil texture refers to the proportion of sand, silt, and clay in a soil. Texture influences almost every aspect of soil use, both in agricultural and engineering applications, and even how natural ecosystems function. Many scientists consider soil texture the most important soil property as it can influence soil/water relationships, gas exchange, and plant nutrition. Accurately determining soil texture in a lab requires time and money; therefore, it is often necessary to estimate soil texture in the field by feel, which can be very accurate if done correctly.

Layered, Flexible Drug Delivery Films For The Prevention Of Fibrotic Scar Tissue Formation, Cheryl L. Rabek

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

Open wounds account for about 50% of military injuries and 10% of non‐fatal traffic injuries. Scar tissue formation in these wounds may be reduced or prevented if treated with a combination of molecules whose release is tuned to the healing phases. The goal of this research was to develop flexible, layered drug delivery films for sequential, localized release of anti‐inflammatory, anti‐oxidant, and anti‐fibrotic molecules to soft tissue.

Films were composed of cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) and Pluronic F‐127 (Pluronic). To impart flexibility, plasticizers, triethyl citrate (TEC) or tributyl citrate (TBC), were added. Mechanical analysis was performed on films as prepared …

Moral Education In Public Schools And The Church: Building Bridges, Scot R.L. Bishop Jan 2015

Moral Education In Public Schools And The Church: Building Bridges, Scot R.L. Bishop

Honors Capstones

In recent decades, public schools have been challenged to integrate student character development with academics. This challenge requires a reallocation of school resources that have been previously devoted only to academics. However, with current academic standards demanding more resources than many schools can supply, incorporating character development becomes extremely difficult. The goal of this paper is to open the door for discussion regarding the possibility that public schools and local churches can have a mutually beneficial relationship for the purpose of enhancing student character development to promote both academic and spiritual excellence. To establish background about the school's role in …

Mixing Oil & Water: Why Child-Custody Evaluations Are Not Meshing With The Best Interest Of The Child, Bari L. Nathan Jan 2015

Mixing Oil & Water: Why Child-Custody Evaluations Are Not Meshing With The Best Interest Of The Child, Bari L. Nathan

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

The Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act provides the statutory requirements for marriage and dissolution of marriage in Illinois. Section 604(b) gives courts the discretion to appoint an evaluator in order to aid in the determination of child custody by evaluating the relevant parties and writing a report. If and when these 604(b) evaluators are appointed, there are virtually no guidelines that set forth what they may or may not do in the course of their evaluations. As a result of this lack of guidelines, 604(b) evaluators often employ clinical assessment instruments (i.e., psychological tests that assess clinical constructs …
