Extended Treatment Window Exists For Improving Sensorimotor Recovery Using Anti-Nogo A Immunotherapy In Adult Rats With Chronic Stroke Deficits, Katherine Marie Podraza
Extended Treatment Window Exists For Improving Sensorimotor Recovery Using Anti-Nogo A Immunotherapy In Adult Rats With Chronic Stroke Deficits, Katherine Marie Podraza
Dissertations
Stroke related death ranks as the fourth most common cause of mortality in the United States. Current therapeutic options following stroke are limited. One potential therapy involves the use of anti-Nogo-A immunotherapy post-stroke. Our laboratory has shown that the administration of this novel treatment results in sensorimotor recovery in adult and aged rats. This therapy has been shown to be efficacious when applied immediately, 24 hours, and 1 week post-stroke in rats with mild to moderate sensorimotor deficits. In addition, recent results suggest that administration of anti-Nogo-A immunotherapy up to 9 weeks after stroke still induces functional recovery and neuroanatomical …
The Influence Of Media Violence On The Neural Correlates Of Empathic Emotional Response, Laura Stockdale
The Influence Of Media Violence On The Neural Correlates Of Empathic Emotional Response, Laura Stockdale
Dissertations
Decades of research on the effects of media violence have shown that exposure to violence in the media is related to increased aggression, decreased prosocial behavior, and decreased empathy. Video games, which contain some of the most graphic, realistic, justified, and rewarded aggression have been shown to increase aggressive behavior and decrease prosocial behavior. Researchers suggest that emotional face processing and inhibitory control may be important factors associated with aggressive behavior and empathy; however, few researchers have examined these variables in chronic and nonchronic violent video game players. Therefore, the goal of the current study was to understand differences in …
Eliminating Acute Myeloid Leukemia Stem Cells By Targeting The Niche Microenviromnent: Co-Inhibition Of Tnf/Il1- Jnk And Nf-Κb, Andrew Volk
Dissertations
Leukemia Stem Cells (LSCs) from Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) require the activity of the transcription factor NF-kB to maintain stemness and drive tumor formation. Blocking NF-kB can preferentially eliminate LSCs in vitro with minimal effects on healthy Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells (HSPCs), making NF-kB a compelling target for anti-leukemia therapies. However, blocking NF-kB in vivo can only extend survival for a short period of time before transplanted mice succumb to the disease. I propose this is due to components of the in vivo niche supporting LSC survival and compensating for the inhibition of NF-kB.
I observed patients with partially …
Profiles Of Protective Factors In Urban African American Youth Exposed To Community Violence: A Prospective Study Of Resilience, Devin Colleen Carey
Profiles Of Protective Factors In Urban African American Youth Exposed To Community Violence: A Prospective Study Of Resilience, Devin Colleen Carey
Dissertations
The broad purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between exposure to community violence and adjustment in an urban sample of African American youth living in Chicago. After years of research on community violence, there has been a call to understand the influences of all levels and systems on child adjustment, as well as to use research to promote positive outcomes and prevention of future violence (Aisenberg & Herrenkohl, 2008). With this in mind, this project used latent profile analysis to create profiles of protection based on individual, family, peer, and community factors, as well as evaluate the …
The Gut-Liver Axis Regulates Pulmonary Inflammation After Intoxication And Burn Injury, Michael M. Chen
The Gut-Liver Axis Regulates Pulmonary Inflammation After Intoxication And Burn Injury, Michael M. Chen
Dissertations
The increasing prevalence of binge drinking and its high association with traumatic injury warrant further investigation into the mechanisms underlying the worsened clinical outcomes associated with this combined injury. Existing literature suggests the liver is at the center of the postburn systemic response with crosstalk between the intestinal microbiome and the liver playing an important role after injury. There is a paucity in the literature, however, regarding the role of the gut-liver axis in the common clinical scenario of burns preceded by alcohol intoxication. Previous studies in our laboratory demonstrated intoxication potentiates postburn hepatic damage and IL-6 production in a …
Negotiating Diabetes: Professional Diabetes Care Work In The U.S., Melissa Marie Gesbeck
Negotiating Diabetes: Professional Diabetes Care Work In The U.S., Melissa Marie Gesbeck
Dissertations
The rising incidence of diabetes mellitus (types 1 and 2) transcends national borders, creating a global pandemic. The U.S. leads the world in diabetes prevalence, despite its wealth and access to sophisticated medical technologies. Within health care, there is an increasing focus on lifestyle and behavioral interventions that research suggests may be the key to reversing this trend, but thus far their effectiveness in practice is uneven at best. In order to gain a better understanding of the other factors involved in professional diabetes care work that might support or inhibit effective diabetes management, this research treats diabetes as a …
Incapacitated Fatherhood: The Impact Of Incarceration On African American Fathers, Dara Lewis
Incapacitated Fatherhood: The Impact Of Incarceration On African American Fathers, Dara Lewis
Dissertations
This project examines the ways that incarceration can shape the meaning and performance of fatherhood. Using 109 surveys and 30 in-depth interviews, three dominant themes emerged that constitute a model father identity standard: 1) being there for their children; 2) being an example for their children; and 3) providing their children with love, basic needs, and protection. The findings indicate that prison environment and post-incarceration restrictions do not support fathers’ ability to perform their roles as fathers, or the maintenance of healthy relationships between fathers and their children. Specifically, it disrupts the father identity confirmation process. As a result, relational …
Backlash Against Working Mothers, Kala Jean Melchiori
Backlash Against Working Mothers, Kala Jean Melchiori
Dissertations
Research by Rudman and colleagues (2012) has detailed how people who defy social stereotypes (called vanguards) experience discriminatory backlash for acting counter-stereotypically. In the present research, I took Rudman's Backlash and Stereotype Maintenance Model (BSMM) and applied it to working women and working mothers. Due to the different content of the stereotypes of working women versus working mothers, I predicted that the process through which perceivers engage in backlash against the two groups is different. I used the theory of Ambivalent Sexism to shape my predictions for how working mothers are vulnerable to different forms of backlash than working women …
Research And Reality: Towards Responsible Medical Research For Catholic Universities, Michael Patrick Mccarthy
Research And Reality: Towards Responsible Medical Research For Catholic Universities, Michael Patrick Mccarthy
Dissertations
It is frequently noted that 90% of medical research stands to benefit only 10% of the population. While others dispute the numbers, there is little doubt that disparities exist in the global agenda for medical research. One needs no clearer example of research—not to mention public health and health care delivery—disparities than the Ebola outbreak that plagues West Africa. Despite these disparities, Catholic universities continue to engage in the social practice of medical research that deviates very little from the national funding priorities established through the National Institute for Health.
This dissertation argues that these unjust disparities are perpetuated by …
Characterization Of The Effect Of Anti-Nogo-A Antibody Treatment On Sensorimotor Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury, Stephen Nawara
Characterization Of The Effect Of Anti-Nogo-A Antibody Treatment On Sensorimotor Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury, Stephen Nawara
Dissertations
Estimates indicate that over 5 million Americans are currently living with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) related disability. Much effort has been put into enhancing functional recovery with physical therapy and other rehabilitative approaches. These strategies are thought to function by facilitating the brain’s innate capacity for neuroregeneration and neuroplasticity. However, the success of these strategies may be limited due the presence of growth- and plasticity- inhibiting factors expressed in the adult brain.
The presence of the membrane protein Nogo-A has been associated with reduced neurite outgrowth in vitro, identifying it as one such molecule. In addition, rodents treated with antibodies …
Gender-Homogenous Mentoring, Spiritual Wellbeing, And Self-Efficacy Beliefs In African American Male Adolescents: A Test Of Three Models, Toussaint David Whetstone
Gender-Homogenous Mentoring, Spiritual Wellbeing, And Self-Efficacy Beliefs In African American Male Adolescents: A Test Of Three Models, Toussaint David Whetstone
Dissertations
Many African American male adolescents mature without the influence of an adequate social model, or a positive, same sex (or gender-homogenous) mentor. Thus, it may be difficult for African American male adolescents to reach adulthood having developed the perceived capability to be successful within specific domains that American society commonly associates with a healthy life course trajectory. A large body of research has suggested that vicarious experience or role modeling is a primary source of efficacy information in a variety of life domains. Research has also suggested that modeling effects are enhanced if the subject and model are similar, especially …
The Use Of Lethal Force By Canadian Police Officers: Assessing The Influence Of Female Police Officers And Minority Threat Explanations On Police Shootings Across Large Cities, Jason T. Carmichael, Stephanie L. Kent
The Use Of Lethal Force By Canadian Police Officers: Assessing The Influence Of Female Police Officers And Minority Threat Explanations On Police Shootings Across Large Cities, Jason T. Carmichael, Stephanie L. Kent
Criminology, Anthropology, & Sociology Faculty Publications
This study examines the applicability of several theoretically derived accounts used to explain the variations in police killings across 39 of Canada’s largest cities over a 15-year period. Pooled time-series negative binomial regression results are consistent with the ethnic threat hypothesis by indicating that lethal police action is associated with the size of the ethnic minority population in each city. Political accounts are supported as non-linear specifications suggest that once ethnic minorities reach a numerical majority in our sample of cities there is a decline in police killings. Findings also support expectations that greater female representation within policing will reduce …

The Role Of Lysophosphatidylcholine Acyltransferase (Lpcat) 3 In Macrophage Inflammatory Responses, Confidence Obianuju Okorie
School of Biomedical Sciences Theses
Sepsis is the systemic response to infection and is characterised by the presence of Severe Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) in addition to a documented or presumed infection. It is an important reason for admission into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the leading cause of death in non-coronary ICU’s and one of the most common causes of death among hospitalized patients. It affects 18 million people worldwide each year with over 7.3 million fatalities. Molecules such as endotoxin, the Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) present in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, are key factors in the pathogenesis of sepsis. The activation of macrophages …
What Happens To Soil Organic Carbon As Coastal Marsh Ecosystems Change In Response To Increasing Salinity? An Exploration Using Ramped Pyrolysis, Elizabeth K. Williams, Brad E. Rosenheim
What Happens To Soil Organic Carbon As Coastal Marsh Ecosystems Change In Response To Increasing Salinity? An Exploration Using Ramped Pyrolysis, Elizabeth K. Williams, Brad E. Rosenheim
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Coastal wetlands store vast amounts of organic carbon, globally, and are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the effects of anthropogenic sea level rise. To understand the effect of sea level rise on organic carbon fate and preservation in this global sink, it is necessary to characterize differences in the biogeochemical stability of coastal wetland soil organic carbon (SOC). Here we use ramped pyrolysis/oxidation decomposition characteristics as proxies for SOC stability to understand the fate of carbon storage in coastal wetlands comprising the Mississippi River deltaic plain, undergoing rapid rates of local sea level rise. Soils from three wetland types (fresh, brackish, …
