Focal Brainstem Gliomas: Advances In Intra-Operative Management, Abdulrahman J. Sabbagh, Ahmed M. Alaqeel
Neurosciences
Improved neuronavigation guidance as well as intraoperative imaging and neurophysiologic monitoring technologies have enhanced the ability of neurosurgeons to resect focal brainstem gliomas. In contrast, diffuse brainstem gliomas are considered to be inoperable lesions. This article is a continuation of an article that discussed brainstem glioma diagnostics, imaging, and classification. Here, we address open surgical treatment of and approaches to focal, dorsally exophytic, and cervicomedullary brainstem gliomas. Intraoperative neuronavigation, intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring, as well as intraoperative imaging are discussed as adjunctive measures to help render these procedures safer, more acute, and closer to achieving surgical goals.
Treating Public Speaking Anxiety: A Comparison Of Exposure And Video Self-Modeling, Emily Marie Bartholomay
Treating Public Speaking Anxiety: A Comparison Of Exposure And Video Self-Modeling, Emily Marie Bartholomay
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This study examined the relative effectiveness of VSM and exposure in treating public speaking anxiety in reducing anxiety with a college student. The study employed a single-subject A-B design with parametric variations. Two phases were utilized in this study: baseline (exposure therapy) and treatment (video self-modeling) with a one-month follow-up. Generalization probes were also employed to assess whether or not decreases in PSA would generalize to other settings. Results indicate a significant decrease in public speaking anxiety from both pre- to post-treatment as well as from baseline to exposure. However, these results may be specific to public speaking anxiety, as …
Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha) Habitat Associations In Four West-Central Minnesota Lakes, April Rose Londo
Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha) Habitat Associations In Four West-Central Minnesota Lakes, April Rose Londo
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
In 1989, zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) were first documented in the land of ten thousand lakes in the Lake Superior Basin at Duluth. Zebra mussels are successful invaders because the species attaches to substrates with byssal threads, can adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions, and has a free-swimming veligers that are easily transported. Although invasive mollusks pose a range of economic and ecological threats to inland waters, our understanding of zebra mussels in Minnesota lakes remains limited. To gain additional information regarding zebra mussel ecology in lake systems, I conducted research in four west-central Minnesota lakes that were …

Improving Sexual Health Education Through Graphic Design, Jocelyn A. Hall
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
For this portion of the thesis project, I will be submitting storyboards that will later translate into web-ready materials as a click-through game, also known as a visual novel. Visual novels are designed similarly to “Choose Your Own Adventure” books, but are, as the name suggests, visually based. Ultimately, I would like to create a functioning and playable game that could serve as a teaching tool as well as entertainment, thereby filling a niche in our digital-based age. In the event that publishing the game or creating a game that functions properly is not possible, the material to be included …

The Public Trust Doctrine In The Shadow Of State Environmental Rights Laws: A Case Study, Alexandra B. Klass
The Public Trust Doctrine In The Shadow Of State Environmental Rights Laws: A Case Study, Alexandra B. Klass
Articles
This Article looks at the relationship between state environmental rights statutes and the common law public trust doctrine. In addressing this issue, it focuses on the state of Minnesota, where, in the early 1970s, the state legislature enacted a far-reaching environmental rights statute, the Minnesota Environmental Rights Act (MERA), that served to codify many public trust principles. Beginning in the early 1970s and for the next forty years, litigants in Minnesota that might otherwise have brought common law public trust doctrine claims for environmental protection purposes instead channeled that litigation through MERA. As a result, Minnesota courts have rarely been …
Rethinking The Geography Of Local Climate Action: Multi-Level Network Participation In Metropolitan Regions, Hari M. Osofsky
Rethinking The Geography Of Local Climate Action: Multi-Level Network Participation In Metropolitan Regions, Hari M. Osofsky
Articles
As the United States and the world become increasingly urbanized, cities are a key site for addressing the problem of climate change. However, urban climate change action is not simply about local officials making decisions within their cities. In major U.S. urban areas, “local” involves multiple layers of government, including county and metro-regional entities. Moreover, many of the cities taking action on climate change also participate in and shape networks of local governments based at state, regional, national, and international levels. This Article argues that multilevel climate change networks could be more effective by embracing this geography of local action …
Identity And Form, Jessica A. Clarke
Identity And Form, Jessica A. Clarke
Articles
Recent controversies over identity claims have prompted questions about who should qualify for affirmative action, who counts as family, who is a man or a woman, and who is entitled to the benefits of U.S. citizenship. Commentators across the political spectrum have made calls to settle these debates with evidence of official designations on birth certificates, application forms, or other records. This move toward formalities seeks to transcend the usual divide between those who believe identities should be determined based on objective biological or social standards, and those who believe identities are a matter of individual choice. Yet legal scholars …
Connecting The Dots: Social Capital And The College-Going Beliefs Of Rural Appalachian Students, Amanda R. Butz
Connecting The Dots: Social Capital And The College-Going Beliefs Of Rural Appalachian Students, Amanda R. Butz
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
First-generation students and students of lower socioeconomic status often prepare for postsecondary education without the benefit of information provided by their families, resulting in lower levels of college access (Lundberg, 2007). Few researchers have sought to understand how potential first-generation college students might go about obtaining the necessary information for a successful transition to college. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine to whom students talk about college and to explore the potential reciprocal relationship between resources for and information about college provided by others and students’ educational beliefs.
This dissertation consisted of two empirical studies. In the first …

Design And Fabrication Of Iridium Oxide-Based Multi-Electrode Array For Biomedical Applications, Cuong Manh Nguyen
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Multi-electrode array (MEA) has emerged as one of the most important and common tools to monitor physiological and biological signals. Advanced micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and innovative nanofabrication technologies provide means to fabricate micro-scale MEAs for implantable bio-applications. One of the prominent advantages of such miniature electrodes is to minimize tissue damage or injuries during surgical implantation. The micro-scale electrodes are normally coated with materials or functionalized with proteins and enzymes to sense different analyates. Iridium oxide (IrOx) owning with many important traits such as biocompatibility, high corrosion resistance in electrolyte materials, pH-sensitivity, large surface-to-volume ratio, and high charge storage has …

The Influence Of Thermal Effluent On Life History Evolution In The Western Mosquitofish, Gambusia Affinis, Amanda M. Boyles
Biology Theses - Archive
The evolutionary consequence of heated effluent on the Western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, was studied at Lake Fairfield, in Freestone County, Texas. The Lake Fairfield reservoir receives heated effluent from Luminant’s Big Brown Power Station. Heated effluent from the power station is discharged into a ‘hot pond’ reservoir before it is allowed to return after cooling to the main reservoir, or ‘main lake’ of Lake Fairfield. Heated effluent elevates the temperature of the hot pond throughout the year and the elevation in water temperature has selected various life history traits in G. affinis that are divergent from the main lake G. …
Cytotoxicty, Cellular Localization And Fluorescent Microscopy Of Malignant Cells Treated With Ruthenium (Ii) Complexes Of The Tetraazatetrapyridopentacene Ligand, Adam S. Dayoub
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive
The ruthenium (II) polypyridyl complexes [(phen)2Ru(tatpp)Ru(phen)2]4+, (P) and [(phen)2Ru(tatpp)]2+, (MP) are promising anticancer activity candidates due to their observed cytotoxic effect against multiple cancer cell lines. These complexes contain a redox-active (tatpp) bridge and a cytotoxic selectivity against cancer lines that are of interest in cellular biological systems. They also exhibit the ability to regress tumor growth in mouse models and have been shown to cleave DNA with an inverse dependence with (O2). Significantly, these complexes may show a higher cytotoxic action in a hypoxic environment similar to that of tumors in vivo. This thesis is a direct test of …
Advancements And Applications Of Nonstandard Finite Difference Methods, Daniel Wood
Advancements And Applications Of Nonstandard Finite Difference Methods, Daniel Wood
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
A class of dynamically consistent numerical methods are analyzed for general n-dimensional productive-destructive systems (PDS). Using this analysis, a methodology for constructing positive and elementary stable nonstandard numerical methods is established. The nonstandard approach results in qualitatively superior numerical methods when compared to the standard ones. PDS model a wide range of dynamical systems, including ones with biological, chemical and physical interactions. Building upon this, a nonstandard finite difference method for solving autonomous dynamical systems with positive solutions is constructed. The proposed numerical methods are computationally efficient and easy to implement. Several examples are given which show that the numerical …
Synthesis And Phylogenetic Comparative Analyses Of The Causes And Consequences Of Karyotype Evolution In Arthropods, Heath Blackmon
Synthesis And Phylogenetic Comparative Analyses Of The Causes And Consequences Of Karyotype Evolution In Arthropods, Heath Blackmon
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Cytogenetic data in the form of karyotypes are complex, highly-variable traits that offer opportunities to detect changes in genome organization, uncover phylogenetic history, and distinguish cryptic species. However, the synthesis of cytogenetic data across large taxonomic scales has been rare. Here I report the insights gained through a synthesis of all available karyotype data from Arthropoda. The first chapter focuses on two databases that were built to make these data openly available, and broad insights into the evolution of sex determination and chromosome number in Arthropoda that the collected data have made possible. This is followed by four chapters that …

The Idols Of Modernity: The Humanity Of Science And The Science Of Humanity, Lukas Szrot
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
The Idols of Modernity draws upon the work of early thinkers in the sociology of knowledge such as Karl Mannheim in an effort to delineate the history of--and unmask the ideology behind--many of the formative aspects of scientific knowledge that enjoy both a central and potentially controversial role in the twenty-first century. In touching upon the role of imagination and speculation in the `hardest' sciences, normative disputes between biological and social sciences, and the intellectual history of modern science, I attempt to reveal the humanity of science. In examining the democratization of the written word, the profound consequences of language …

The advancement of Coastal Ocean Forecasting Systems (COFS) requires the support of continuous scientific progress addressing: (a) the primary mechanisms driving coastal circulation; (b) methods to achieve fully integrated coastal systems (observations and models), that are dynamically embedded in larger scale systems; and (c) methods to adequately represent air-sea and biophysical interactions. Issues of downscaling, data assimilation, atmosphere-wave-ocean couplings and ecosystem dynamics in the coastal ocean are discussed. These science topics are fundamental for successful COFS, which are connected to evolving downstream applications, dictated by the socioeconomic needs of rapidly increasing coastal populations.

Water Column Stratification Structures Viral Community Composition In The Sargasso Sea, Dawn Goldsmith, Jennifer Brum, Max Hopkins, Craig Carlson, Mya Breitbart
Marine Science Faculty Publications
A decade-long study of viral abundance at the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) site recently revealed an annually recurring pattern where viral abundance was fairly uniform in the well-mixed upper water column each winter, yet a subsurface peak in viral abundance between 60 and 100 m depth developed each summer during water column stratification (Parsons et al. 2012; ISME J 6:273–284). Building upon these findings, this study tests the hypothesis that in the well-mixed period (March), the viral communities at the surface and at 100 m depth are similar in composition, while during water column stratification (September), differences in the …

Whitefly-transmitted viruses belonging to the genus Begomovirus (family Geminiviridae) represent a substantial threat to agricultural food production. The rapid evolutionary potential of these single-stranded DNA viruses combined with the polyphagous feeding behavior of their whitefly vector (Bemisia tabaci) can lead to the emergence of damaging viral strains. Therefore, it is crucial to characterize begomoviruses circulating in different regions and crops globally. This study utilized vector-enabled metagenomics (VEM) coupled with high-throughput sequencing to survey begomoviruses directly from whiteflies collected in various locations (California (USA), Guatemala, Israel, Puerto Rico, and Spain). Begomoviruses were detected in all locations, with the highest diversity identified …

Novel Circular Single-Stranded Dna Viruses Identified In Marine Invertebrates Reveal High Sequence Diversity And Consistent Predicted Intrinsic Disorder Patterns Within Putative Structural Proteins, Karyna Rosario, Ryan Schenck, Rachel Harbeitner, Stephanie Lawler, Mya Breitbart
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Viral metagenomics has recently revealed the ubiquitous and diverse nature of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) viruses that encode a conserved replication initiator protein (Rep) in the marine environment. Although eukaryotic circular Rep-encoding ssDNA (CRESS-DNA) viruses were originally thought to only infect plants and vertebrates, recent studies have identified these viruses in a number of invertebrates. To further explore CRESS-DNA viruses in the marine environment, this study surveyed CRESS-DNA viruses in various marine invertebrate species. A total of 27 novel CRESS-DNA genomes, with Reps that share less than 60.1% identity with previously reported viruses, were recovered from 21 invertebrate species, mainly crustaceans. …
