The Science Around Us: Partnerships To Foster Interest And Competency In Science Among Middle School Students In Rural Nm, Sally Davis, Shiraz Mishra, Alejandro Ortega, Kathryn Peters

Posters and Presentations

The New Mexico SEPA project engages rural Hispanic and American Indian middle school students in the science around us, through curricula, summer camp, field trips, career days, school gardens, nature hikes and other learning opportunities in and out of the classroom. Emphasis is placed on role models, health careers, healthy living, and natural history. Learning activities are inquiry based, culturally appropriate and educationally sound. Frequent “think tanks” ensure teacher input and guidance. Professional development is aligned with the program objectives and needs of the teachers.

Teaching Legal Frameworks, David Herring Jan 2015

Teaching Legal Frameworks, David Herring

Faculty Book Display Case

This book chapter describes the process of developing legal frameworks. Legal frameworks are a critical element in basic legal analysis. They set out the questions courts ask when addressing a particular issue. Law students need to learn the applicable framework before proceeding with any type of rigorous legal analysis. This chapter also discusses an approach to teaching law students the skill of constructing legal frameworks, providing three concrete examples in the areas of Civil Procedure and Constitutional Law.

Music’S Impact: A Review And Curriculum Proposal, Susanna M. Lindberg Jan 2015

Music’S Impact: A Review And Curriculum Proposal, Susanna M. Lindberg

Selected Honors Theses

The following thesis is a review of literature, covered in three chapters, and a proposal for a researched-based education curriculum. The goal of this research is to find how music affects the brain, how it influences education, whether it affects emotions, and if it has an impact on special populations in regards to education. In the final section of this thesis, there is a theoretical proposal for a yearlong music-based literacy curriculum for third grade students who struggle with reading and comprehension.

Operation Asha: Best Practices For Reducing Missing Cases, Misja Ilcisin, Will Swanson

Miller Center Fellowship

We hope that this new set of screening criteria will expand the number of potential TB suspects who are testing, increasing the number of TB cases found and treated. This will reduce the number of missed TB cases, as well as the prevalence and incidence of this disease.

Mk591, A Second Generation Leukotriene Biosynthesis Inhibitor, Prevents Invasion And Induces Apoptosis In The Bone-Invading C4-2b Human Prostate Cancer Cells: Implications For The Treatment Of Castration-Resistant, Bone-Metastatic Prostate Cancer, Sivalokanathan Sarveswaran, Ritisha Ghosh, Shravan Morisetty, Jagadananda Ghosh

Urology Articles

Castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is a major clinical challenge for which no cure is currently available primarily because of the lack of proper understanding about appropriate molecular target(s). Previously we observed that inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase (5-Lox) activity induces apoptosis in some types of prostate cancer cells, suggesting an important role of 5-Lox in the viability of prostate cancer cells. However, nothing is known about the role of 5-Lox in the survival of castration-resistant, metastatic prostate cancer cells. Thus, we tested the effects of MK591, a second-generation, specific inhibitor of 5-Lox activity, on the viability and metastatic characteristics of CRPC cells. …

Ecosystem-Scale Rainfall Manipulation In A Piñon-Juniper Forest At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico: Meteorological Data (2006-2013), William Pockman, Nathan Mcdowell Jan 2015

Ecosystem-Scale Rainfall Manipulation In A Piñon-Juniper Forest At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico: Meteorological Data (2006-2013), William Pockman, Nathan Mcdowell

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Climate models predict that water limited regions around the world will become drier and warmer in the near future, including southwestern North America. We developed a large-scale experimental system that allows testing of the ecosystem impacts of precipitation changes. Four treatments were applied to 1600 m2 plots (40 m × 40 m), each with three replicates in a piñon pine (Pinus edulis) and juniper (Juniper monosperma) ecosystem. These species have extensive root systems, requiring large-scale manipulation to effectively alter soil water availability. Treatments consisted of: 1) irrigation plots that receive supplemental water additions, 2) drought plots that receive 55% of …

Warming-El Nino-Nitrogen Deposition Experiment (Wenndex): Net Primary Production Quadrat Data At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2006 -Present), Scott Collins, William Pockman, Joe Fargione

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Humans are creating significant global environmental change, including shifts in climate, increased nitrogen (N) deposition, and the facilitation of species invasions. A multi-factorial field experiment is being performed in an arid grassland within the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) to simulate increased nighttime temperature, higher N deposition, and heightened El Niño frequency (which increases winter precipitation by an average of 50%). The purpose of the experiment is to better understand the potential effects of environmental change on grassland community composition and the growth of introduced creosote seeds and seedlings. The focus is on the response of three dominant species, all …

Manager Perspectives On Communication And Public Engagement In Ecological Restoration Project Success, Caroline Gottschalk Druschke, Kristen C. Hychka Jan 2015

Manager Perspectives On Communication And Public Engagement In Ecological Restoration Project Success, Caroline Gottschalk Druschke, Kristen C. Hychka

Professional and Public Writing Faculty Publications

We look to a particular social-ecological system, the restoration community in Rhode Island, USA and the rivers, wetlands, marshes, and estuaries they work to protect, to draw connections between communication, community involvement, and ecological restoration project success. Offering real-world examples drawn from interviews with 27 local, state, federal, and nonprofit restoration managers, we synthesize the mechanisms that managers found effective to argue that the communication employed by resource managers in each phase of the restoration process, in prioritization, implementation, and monitoring, and for garnering broad-based support, shapes the quality of public engagement in natural resources management, which, in turn, can …

The transport of moisture in the tropics is a critical process for the global energy budget and on geologic timescales, has markedly influenced continental landscapes, migratory pathways, and biological evolution. Here we present a continuous, first-of-its-kind 1.3-My record of continental hydroclimate and lake-level variability derived from drill core data from Lake Malawi, East Africa (9–15° S). Over the Quaternary, we observe dramatic shifts in effective moisture, resulting in large-scale changes in one of the world’s largest lakes and most diverse freshwater ecosystems. Results show evidence for 24 lake level drops of more than 200 m during the Late Quaternary, including …

A Research Framework For The Geographic Study Of Exotic Pet Mammals In The Usa, Gabrielle C. Tegeder Jan 2015

A Research Framework For The Geographic Study Of Exotic Pet Mammals In The Usa, Gabrielle C. Tegeder

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Exotic animals are not well-represented in geographic studies, even in the emerging sub-field of animal geography. With the dearth of exotic animal studies, and the relevance of exotic pets in the public consciousness and in the news, a basic, introductory study such as this is necessary to begin examining the myriad ways in which exotic pets intersect with, and have influence in, both the site and situation of modern human-oriented environments.

Exotic pet attack incidents and both state and federal laws regarding the private ownership of exotic mammals as pets were examined in detail within the scope of this research. …
