Identification And Quantification Of Diffuse Fresh Submarine Groundwater Discharge Via Airborne Thermal Infrared Remote Sensing, Joseph T. Tamborski, A Deanne Rogers, Henry J. Bokuniewicz, J Kirk Cochran, Caitlin R. Young
Department of Geosciences Faculty Publications
Airborne thermal infrared (TIR) overflights were combined with shoreline radionuclide surveys to investigate submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) along the north shore of Long Island, NY between June 2013 and September 2014. Regression equations developed for three distinct geomorphological environments suggest a positive linear relationship between the rate of diffuse SGD and the spatial extent of the observed coastal TIR anomalies; such a relationship provides quantitative evidence of the ability to use TIR remote sensing as a tool to remotely identify and measure SGD. Landsat TIR scenes were unable to resolve any of the 18 TIR anomalies identified during the various …

BACKGROUND: Subpopulations and Intermediate Outcomes in COPD Study (SPIROMICS) is a multi-center longitudinal, observational study to identify novel phenotypes and biomarkers of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In a subset of 300 subjects enrolled at six clinical centers, we are performing flow cytometric analyses of leukocytes from induced sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and peripheral blood. To minimize several sources of variability, we use a "just-in-time" design that permits immediate staining without pre-fixation of samples, followed by centralized analysis on a single instrument.
METHODS: The Immunophenotyping Core prepares 12-color antibody panels, which are shipped to the six Clinical Centers shortly before …

Development Of Mycopesticide For The Management Of Sorghum Chafer, Pachnoda Interrupta (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) In Ethiopia, Habtegebriel Belay
All PhD Dissertations
Pachnoda interrupta (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) is a damaging pest of sorghum, other cereals and horticultural crops such as maize, wheat, barley, bananas, guava etc. in Africa which at times results in complete crop losses. Current control strategies heavily rely on chemical pesticides. Controlling adult beetles through application of insecticides,in addition to being detrimental to the environment and the ecology, does not provide long lasting control. Thus, efficient biological control agents that can control the pest in the breeding sites need to be developed. There is evidence that microbial pesticides can effectively control P. interrupta. Entomopathogenic fungi isolated from soils and insects in Ethiopia …

All PhD Dissertations
Cultivation of Napier grass, Pennisetum purpureum, the most important livestock crop in East Africa is severely constrained by Napier Grass Stunt (NGS) disease. The disease spreads via an insect vector or vegetative propagation of infected plant material and is caused by a phytoplasma. This necessitates the development of an integrated management approach for the disease. Therefore, objectives of this study were to assess the incidence of the disease and its severity, to identify its wild hosts and farmers‟ knowledge on these hosts, to assess the threat of NGS disease to cultivated grasses and to establish the role of wild inoculum …

Larval Habitat Discrimination By The African Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae Sensu Lato: Observations From Standardized Experiments And Field Studies, Herrera-Varela Manuela
All PhD Dissertations
Current malaria vector control strategies in Africa target indoor resting and biting mosquitoes and rely heavily on a small number of insecticides. These interventions have lead to the selection of insecticide resistance, behavioural adaptations of the vectors and leave naturally exophilic species nearly untouched. Gravid Anopheles gambiae s.l. female searching for an oviposition site would be a novel target for vector control. However, little is known about the oviposition-site selection behaviour (criteria) of this mosquito. The major aim of the presented research was to investigate if gravid An. gambiae s.l make informed choices when selecting an oviposition site and to …

Novel Insecticides And Application Strategies For Malaria Vector Control, Oscar Ochieng Mbare
All PhD Dissertations
Targeting malaria vector mosquitoes outdoors has become a research priority to address residual malaria transmission. Mosquito larval source management provides an excellent and well established tool. However, there is a need to reduce the cost and effort of larviciding programmes by testing persistent larvicides that reduce the frequency of application and by exploring novel strategies of application. This thesis aimed to evaluate two larval control agents, with unique mode of actions: the self-spreading silicone-based film Aquatain Mosquito Formulation (AMF) and the pyriproxyfen-based insect growth regulator Sumilarv®. Dose-response tests and standardized field tests were conducted to assess the susceptibility of Anopheles …

Recursive Frame Analysis: A Qualitative Research Method For Mapping Change-Oriented Discourse, Hillary Keeney, Bradford Keeney, Ronald Chenail
The Qualitative Report Books
Recursive Frame Analysis (RFA) is a qualitative research method for mapping and analyzing change-oriented conversation. Cybernetician and therapist Bradford Keeney invented RFA over twenty years ago as a means of discerning and indicating the bare bones organization of real-time therapeutic performance. This book revisits some of Keeney’s original ideas while providing a more exhaustive theoretical foundation for RFA, a thorough exploration of its practical application as a research tool, and several detailed analyses of therapy sessions.
Rooted to Gregory Bateson’s notion of contextual frame and the way that a distinction can recursively operate on itself as formulated by G. Spencer-Brown’s …

Primetime Goes Hammerstein: The Musicalization Of Primetime Fictional Television In The Post-Network Era, Kelly Kessler
Primetime Goes Hammerstein: The Musicalization Of Primetime Fictional Television In The Post-Network Era, Kelly Kessler
The Journal of e-Media Studies
The musical did not suddenly burst on the small screen in the nineties, but generic, industrial, and aesthetic shifts in television, film, and theatre led to the cultivation of an environment that invited a renewed musicalization across television forms, one that transcended underscoring or musical montages and allowed a space for otherwise nonmusical characters (in established nonmusical worlds) to burst into diegetic song, and for the narrative worlds to momentarily become ones akin to the movie or stage musical where life is communicated through song. The last decade of the 20th century simply shined a light on the long union …

New Methods For Measuring Transient Interactions Between Proteins And Curved Membranes, Philip P. Cheney
New Methods For Measuring Transient Interactions Between Proteins And Curved Membranes, Philip P. Cheney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Variations in the physical deformation of the plasma membrane play a significant role in the sorting and behavior of the proteins that occupy it. Determining the interplay between membrane curvature and protein behavior required the development and thorough characterization of a model plasma membrane with well defined and localized regions of curvature. This model system consists of a fluid lipid bilayer that is supported by a dye-loaded polystyrene nanoparticle patterned glass substrate. As the physical deformation of the supported lipid bilayer is essential to our understanding of the behavior of the protein occupying the bilayer, extensive characterization of the structure …

Phytoremediation Of Metal Contamination Using Salix (Willows), Gordon J. Kersten
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abandoned hardrock mines and the resulting Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) are a source of vast, environmental degradation that are toxic threats to plants, animals, and humans. Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are metal contaminants often found in AMD. In my mine outwash water samples, cadmium and lead concentrations were 19 and 160 times greater than concentrations in control waterways, and 300 and 40 times greater than EPA Aquatic Life Use water quality standards, respectively. I tested the phytoremediation characteristics of three montane willows native to the Rocky Mountains: Salix drummondiana, S. monticola, and S. planifolia. I tested …
The Effects Of Molecular Chaperones On Tau Fibril Assembly, Ahmed Omran
The Effects Of Molecular Chaperones On Tau Fibril Assembly, Ahmed Omran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The accumulation of microtubule-associated protein tau into fibrillar aggregates is the hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders, collectively referred to as tauopathies. Fibrils can propagate from one cell to the next and spread throughout the brain. However, a study shows that only small aggregates can be taken up by cultured neuronal cells. The mechanisms that lead to the breakage of fibrils into smaller fragments remain unknown. In yeast, the AAA+ chaperone HSP104 processes the reactivation of protein aggregates and is responsible for fragmentation of fibrils. This study focused on investigating the effects of molecular chaperones on tau fibrils …

Designing Tuftsin Conjugate For Directing Antimicrobial Ionophores To Macrophages, Sokhna Seck, Zeenat Razvi
Undergraduate Research Posters 2015
For all microorganisms, acquisition of metal ions is essential for survival in the environment or their infected host. Metal ions are required in many biological processes as cofactors for proteins or structural elements for enzymes. These ions play a role in chemotaxis, phosphorylation, transport of sugars and proteins, and initiation of DNA replication, among other things. It is critical for bacteria to ensure that metal uptake and availability meet its physiological needs; too little can impede these important biological processes, while too much can be toxic leading to radical formation which can cause damage to proteins and cell structures (Porcheron, …
