Infants exposed to maternal HIV-1 provide an opportunity to assess correlates of HIV-1-specific interferon (IFN)-γ responses and may be informative in the development of HIV-1 vaccines. HIV-1-infected women with CD4 counts 200-500 cells/mm(3) were randomized to short-course zidovudine/nevirapine (ZDV/NVP) or highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) between 2003 and 2005. Maternal plasma and breastmilk HIV-1 RNA and DNA were quantified during the first 6-12 months postpartum. HIV-1 gag peptide-stimulated enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assays were conducted in HIV-1-exposed, uninfected infants (EU), and correlates were determined using regression and generalized estimating equations. Among 47 EU infants, 21 (45%) had ≥1 positive ELISPOT result …

The Thermal Stress Response To Diel Vertical Migration In The Hyperiid Amphipod Phronima Sedentaria, Leanne E. Elder, Brad A. Seibel
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The hyperiid amphipod Phronima sedentaria experiences a temperature change of 15 °C during diel migration in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific (ETNP) from 8–10 °C at depth to 25–27 °C at night in the surface waters. The aim of this study was to determine if the natural temperature gradient experienced by P. sedentaria results in a thermal stress response. Individuals were initially exposed to their night time temperatures (23 °C) and subsequently subjected to temperatures within and above the range they typically experience. In the Eastern Tropical North Pacific P. sedentaria tolerates its normal night-time temperature (~ 23 °C), but …

Increased Attention And Memory For Beloved-Related Information During Infatuation: Behavioral And Electrophysiological Data, Sandra J. E. Langeslag, Jamie R. Oliver, Martine E. Köhlen, Ilse M. Nijs
Psychology Faculty Works
Emotionally salient information is well attended and remembered. It has been shown that infatuated individuals have increased attention for their beloved. It is unknown whether this attention bias generalizes to information related to the beloved. Moreover, infatuated individuals report to remember trivial things about their beloved, but this has not yet been tested empirically. In two studies, we tested whether infatuated individuals have increased attention and memory for beloved-related information. In a passive viewing task (Study 1), the late positive potential, an event-related potential (ERP) component reflecting motivated attention, was enhanced for beloved-related vs friend-related words/phrases. In a recognition task …

Development Of Monolithic Column Materials For The Separation And Analysis Of Glycans, Keith Stine, Allan Alla
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
Monolithic column materials offer great advantages as chromatographic media in bioseparations and as solid-supports in biocatalysis. These single-piece porous materials have an interconnected ligament structure that limits the void volume inside the column, thus increasing the efficiency without sacrificing the permeability. The preparation of monolithic materials is easy, reproducible and has available a wide range of chemistries to utilize. Complex, heterogeneous and isobaric glycan structures require preparation methods that may include glycan release, separation and enrichment prior to a comprehensive and site-specific glycosylation analysis. Monolithic column materials aid that demand, as shown by the results reported by the research works …
Corbicula Fluminea Food Web Ecology: An Experimental Transplant Approach In A Karst Riverine System, Autumn Smith
Corbicula Fluminea Food Web Ecology: An Experimental Transplant Approach In A Karst Riverine System, Autumn Smith
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The Asiatic clam Corbicula fluminea is a filter-feeding habitat generalist. Carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of C. fluminea body tissue was compared between reaches of Kentucky’s upper Green River that differed in Cladophora growth. Corbicula fluminea from an upstream reach with little Cladophora was translocated to a downstream reach with high Cladophora levels. Individuals from both reaches were placed in mussel silos in the same downstream reach in autumn 2012 and again in 2013 for 77 and 119 days, respectively. Flow during 2012 consisted of no high flow events until late autumn. Flow patterns in 2013 were consistently higher and more …

Introduction
Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in the United States. The treatment and control of hypertension is inadequate, especially among patients without health insurance coverage. The Affordable Care Act offered an opportunity to improve hypertension management by increasing the number of people covered by insurance. This study predicts the long-term effects of improved hypertension treatment rates due to insurance expansions on the prevalence and mortality rates of CVD of nonelderly Americans with hypertension.
Methods
We developed a state-transition model to simulate the lifetime health events of the population aged 25 to …

The atomic force microscope (AFM) is broadly used to study the morphology of cells. The morphological characteristics and differences of the cell membrane between normal human astrocytes and glial tumor cells are not well explored. Following treatment with cold atmospheric plasma, evaluation of the selective effect of plasma on cell viability of tumor cells is poorly understood and requires further evaluation. Using AFM we imaged morphology of glial cells before and after cold atmospheric plasma treatment. To look more closely at the effect of plasma on cell membrane, high resolution imaging was used. We report the differences between normal human …

Next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS) has progressed enormously over the past decade, transforming genomic analysis and opening up many new opportunities for applications in clinical microbiology laboratories. The impact of NGS on microbiology has been revolutionary, with new microbial genomic sequences being generated daily, leading to the development of large databases of genomes and gene sequences. The ability to analyze microbial communities without culturing organisms has created the ever-growing field of metagenomics and microbiome analysis and has generated significant new insights into the relation between host and microbe. The medical literature contains many examples of how this new technology can be …

The Omura’s whale (Balaenoptera omurai) was described as a new species in 2003 and then later as an ancient lineage basal to a Bryde’s/sei whale clade. Currently known only from whaling and stranding specimens primarily from the western Pacific and eastern Indian Oceans, there exist no confirmed field observations or ecological/behavioral data. Here we present the first genetically confirmed documentation of living Omura’s whales, including descriptions of basic ecology and behavior from northwest Madagascar. Species identification was confirmed through molecular phylogenetic analyses of biopsies collected from 23 animals. All individuals shared a single haplotype in a 402bp sequence …

Anger Is A Gift: How Psychology And Ethics Illuminate Moral Responsibility - Peter White Scholar Grant, Zac Cogley
Anger Is A Gift: How Psychology And Ethics Illuminate Moral Responsibility - Peter White Scholar Grant, Zac Cogley
Grants
This proposal details a project that builds on my current interdisciplinary research program to articulate and develop a novel theory of moral responsibility. Like many philosophers, I maintain that whether someone is morally responsible for an action depends on whether it is appropriate to adopt attitudes such as anger and resentment toward the person. What makes my view unique is how I understand these “reactive attitudes.” I show they serve three functions: to appraise the action of a person (e.g. that it is wrong), to communicate the appraisal of wrongdoing to others, and to sanction the perceived wrongdoer. My defense …

Children's Rights In The Midst Of Marriage Equality: Amicus Brief In Obergefell V. Hodges By Scholars Of The Constitutional Rights Of Children, Tanya Washington, Susannah Pollvogt, Catherine Smith, Lauren Fontana
Scholarly Articles
Many scholars have called for the acknowledgement and treatment of children's rights as constitutionally protected and enforceable, and Supreme Court precedent establishes that the government may not punish children for matters beyond children's control. Same-sex marriage bans and non-recognition laws, which are collectively referred to as marriage bans, impose prohibited punishment on children for being born into, or parented by, same-sex families. States argue that marriage is the optimal familial environment for children, yet marriage bans categorically exclude an entire class of children -- children in same-sex families -- from the legal, economic, and social benefits of marriage. In response …

A Qualitative Examination Of Family Communication Patterns And Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Gender Identity Development, Scott Sellnow-Richmond, Derek Bolen, Katheryn C. Maguire, Lynn Hartshorn, Michelle Millard
Iowa Journal of Communication
Gender identity (GI, knowledge of membership in a gender category, such as "man" or "woman;" "male" or "female;" "masculine" or 'feminine") is a complicated concept. In order to best understand GI as a social construction, it is key to incorporate the most important social aspect of how an individual's gender identity is influenced, specifically messages from family members. This study seeks to understand the types of communication related to gender identity that occur within families. It also seeks to explore how Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB)-identifying participants conceptualize their gender identities in the wake of these messages. Finally, the study …
The Impact Of Collective Intelligence And Honest Signaling On Fraud Brainstorming Effectiveness: A Sociometric Investigation Using Wearable Sensor Technology, Allen Hartt
2015
This dissertation investigates the impact of collective intelligence and honest signaling on the fraud risk brainstorming effectiveness of audit groups. Emerging research in psychology shows that collective intelligence, which captures the general ability of a group to perform a wide variety of tasks, is a strong predictor of group performance. Honest signals are nonverbal communication cues that are either so costly to make or difficult to suppress that they are reliable in signaling intent.
The first study of this dissertation provides a summary of extant literature examining collective intelligence and honest signaling, with an emphasis on those studies that have …

It's Not Just The Effort That Counts: Conservation Endangerment For At-Risk Species, Robert T. Caccese
Buffalo Environmental Law Journal
The listing determination factors nestled within Section 4 of the Endangered Species Act can be best described as the controversial heart and soul of the statute. Federal courts, charged with reviewing listing determinations, need specific criteria to provide better consistency and clarityfor the arbitrary and capricious judicial review standard In its current state, the standard has not been stated with any particularity, leaving adequacy to be based upon case-specific analysis by various federal judges regarding listing decisions of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Most crucial are contexts pertaining to conservation effort reliance. Federal agencies' increased reliance on agreements and …
Spiciness, Trevor J. Mcdougall, Oliver A. Krzysik
Spiciness, Trevor J. Mcdougall, Oliver A. Krzysik
Journal of Marine Research
We define and present algorithms for spiciness, which is an oceanographic variable whose isopycnal variations reflect isopycnal water-mass contrasts in density units. Discussion of spiciness in the oceanographic literature has often concentrated on its supposed orthogonality to isopycnals on the salinity-temperature diagram and how this orthogonal nature means that spiciness is a “passive” thermodynamic variable. Here we show that this “orthogonal” property is devoid of physical meaning. Moreover, it is emphasized that the notion of “orthogonality” on the salinity-temperature diagram does not give rise to a passive thermodynamic variable. Rather, the passive nature of variations of any thermodynamic variable is …

The Influence Of Anoxia And Substrate Availability On N2o Cycling By Denitrification In The Upper Boundary Of The Oxygen Minimum Zone Off Northern Chile, Maribeb Castro-González, Laura Farías
Journal of Marine Research
Strong accumulations of N2O at oxyclines are some of the most conspicuous features of the world's oceans. However, the origin of these maxima, and the relative contribution of nitrification and denitrification in N2O cycling, remains unclear. In order to gain insight into the importance of denitrification and factors regulating N2O cycling at upper oxyclines in the eastern South Pacific, the production and consumption of N2O by denitrification were measured using a classical acetylene method under induced anoxia with the addition of an electron acceptor (nitrite) and donors (sodium acetate and glucose). The …

Low-Frequency Variability Of The Separated Western Boundary Current In Response To A Seasonal Wind Stress In A 2.5-Layer Model With Outcropping, Jérôme Sirven, Sabine Férvrier, Christophe Herbaut
Journal of Marine Research
The response of the separated western boundary current to a seasonally varying wind stress is studied in a 2.5-layer model where the second layer outcrops. The model is eddy permitting with a resolution of one-sixth of a degree, and the geometry of the basin is idealized. The response is studied for two mean states: the first one is only wind driven, whereas the second one takes into account the existence of a meridional overturning circulation. The separation latitude and the mean path followed by the separated western boundary current are shifted northward of approximately 2° when the overturning circulation is …

The Wall-Layer Dynamics In A Weakly Stratified Tidal Bottom Boundary Layer, I. Lozovatsky, S. U. P. Jinadasa, H. J. S. Fernando, J.-H. Lee, Chang Su Hong
Journal of Marine Research
The application of the classical logarithmic layer model for wall-bounded shear flows to marine bottom boundary layer (BBL) usually leads to an overestimation of the friction velocity u* due possibly to the influence of form drag, stratification, and rotation of the flow vector. To gain insights on the BBL velocity scaling, acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurements taken in the East China Sea were analyzed (a total of 270 sixteen-minute averaged velocity profiles). Single and double log-layer models, a log-wake model, and a modified log-layer (MLL) model that accounts for stratification in the upper part of the BBL (Perlin, …
