Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A thesis submitted to the College of Dental Medicine of Nova Southeastern University of the degree of Master of Science in Dentistry.

Background: Therapeutic management of bone loss in the craniofacial region as a consequence of trauma, surgery or congenital malformations presents a clinical challenge. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), due to their inherent plasticity, are potential candidates for cell based therapies for the repair and reconstruction of craniofacial bone tissue. Guided differentiation of stem cells to osteogenic precursors is marked by spatio-temporally regulation of gene expression profiles including that of transcription factors, cytokines, extracellular matrix proteins, enzymes and several signaling …

All previous records of the 12 species of chewing louse reported from the Indian Peafowl are reviewed. An identification key for …

Chirally-Sensitive Electron-Molecule Interactions, J. M. Dreiling, Timothy J. Gay Jan 2015

Chirally-Sensitive Electron-Molecule Interactions, J. M. Dreiling, Timothy J. Gay

Timothy J. Gay Publications

All molecular forms of life have chemically-specific handedness. However, the origin of these asymmetries is not understood. A possible explanation was suggested by Vester and Ulbricht immediately following the discovery of parity violation in 1957: chiral beta radiation in cosmic rays may have preferentially destroyed one enantiomeric form of various biological precursors. In the experiments reported here, we observed chiral specificity in two electronmolecule interactions: quasi-elastic scattering and dissociative electron attachment. Using lowenergy longitudinally spin-polarized (chiral) electrons as substitutes for beta rays, we found that chiral bromocamphor molecules exhibited both a transmission and dissociative electron attachment rate that depended on …

Examining The Relationship Among Genes, Attention Bias To Emotion, Depression In Youth, Jessica L. Jenness Jan 2015

Examining The Relationship Among Genes, Attention Bias To Emotion, Depression In Youth, Jessica L. Jenness

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The investigation of biologically initiated pathways to psychological disorder is critical to advance our understanding of mental illness. Research has suggested that attention bias to emotion may be an intermediate trait for depression associated with biologically plausible candidate genes, such as the serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR) and catechol-o-methyl-transferase (COMT) genes, yet there have been mixed findings in regards to the precise direction of effects. The experience of recent stressful life events (SLEs) may be an important, yet currently unstudied, moderator of the relationship between genes and attention bias as SLEs have been associated with both gene expression and attention to emotion. …

Phylogenetic Relationships Among Populations Of Pristurus Rupestris Blanford,1874 (Sauria: Sphaerodactylidae) In Southern Iran, Sugol Yousofi, Eskandar Rastegar Pouyani, Vida Hojati Jan 2015

Phylogenetic Relationships Among Populations Of Pristurus Rupestris Blanford,1874 (Sauria: Sphaerodactylidae) In Southern Iran, Sugol Yousofi, Eskandar Rastegar Pouyani, Vida Hojati

Turkish Journal of Zoology

We examined intraspecific relationships of the subspecies Pristurus rupestris iranicus from the northern Persian Gulf area (Hormozgan, Bushehr, and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces). Phylogenetic relationships among these samples were estimated based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. We used three methods of phylogenetic tree reconstruction (maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and Bayesian inference). The sampled populations were divided into 5 clades but exhibit little genetic divergence between populations, suggesting that these all represent a single species and subspecies. The low genetic divergences suggest that the species may have expanded its range within Iran since the last drying period of the Persian …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The Egyptian mongoose is the only member of the family Herpestidae in Turkey. The species is distributed mainly in Africa, and Turkey constitutes the northernmost distribution margin of the species. Thus far, a natural specimen's karyotype from an area with a known locality for H. ichneumon has not been studied. The karyotype of a male specimen from Hatay was determined to be 2n = 43, NF = 71, NFa = 66. The X1 and X2 chromosomes were middle-sized metacentric, and the Y chromosome was middle-sized telocentric. The external and skull measurements of the Adana-Yumurtalık and Hatay specimens are given here …

A Mobile Image Enhancement Technology For Visually Impaired, Fahao Qiao Jan 2015

A Mobile Image Enhancement Technology For Visually Impaired, Fahao Qiao

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

In this thesis, an image enhancement application is developed for low-vision patients when they use iPhones to see images/watch videos. The thesis has two contributions. The first contribution is the new image enhancement algorithm which combines human vision features. The new image enhancement algorithm is modified from a wavelet transform based image enhancement algorithm developed by Dr. Jinshan Tang. Different from the original algorithm, the new image enhancement algorithm combines human visual feature into the algorithm and thus can make the new algorithm more effective. Experimental simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better visual results than the algorithm …

Behavioral Couples Therapy For Smoking Cessation: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial, Heather Lachance, Erin M. Tooley Jan 2015

Behavioral Couples Therapy For Smoking Cessation: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial, Heather Lachance, Erin M. Tooley

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Introduction—Behavioral couples therapy (BCT) has been found to improve long-term abstinence rates in alcohol- and substance-dependent populations but has not been tested for smoking cessation. This pilot study examined the feasibility and acceptability of BCT for smoking-discordant couples.

Methods—Forty-nine smokers (smoking >10 cigarettes/day) with non-smoking partners were randomized to receive a couples social support (BCT-S) intervention, or an individually-delivered smoking cessation (ST) treatment. The couples were married or cohabiting for at least one year, with partners who had never smoked or had not used tobacco in one year. Both treatments included seven weekly sessions and 8-weeks of nicotine …

Enterogenous Cyst Of The Small Bowel Causing Intussusception In An Adult: Case Report And Review Of Literature, Nihar Shah Md, Therese Lizardo-Escaño, Hamid Shaaban, Gautamy Dhadham, Arya Karki, Robert Spira Jan 2015

Enterogenous Cyst Of The Small Bowel Causing Intussusception In An Adult: Case Report And Review Of Literature, Nihar Shah Md, Therese Lizardo-Escaño, Hamid Shaaban, Gautamy Dhadham, Arya Karki, Robert Spira

Gastroenterology

Small bowel intussusception is a rare congenital disease entity, mostly manifesting before the age of two with abdominal pain and acute intestinal obstruction. In adults, colon intussusception is a rare event causing approximately 1% of all acute intestinal obstructions and they can occur idiopathically in adults or due to an intraluminal tumor mass. We report a case of an enterogenous cyst causing intussusception and iron deficiency anemia in an adult treated by surgical excision and resection of the small bowel.

The Lifelong Learning Of Science, William W. Cobern Jan 2015

The Lifelong Learning Of Science, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

The lifelong learning of science is actually becoming harder and harder to avoid. We can expect that there will be fewer and fewer adults who are truly uninterested in science and technology. What will happen is that people will periodically be interested and periodically uninterested. The rising impact of science and technology on lifelong learning, with the constant flow of information through the media, Internet and 24 hour news cycle, will make some interest in science some of time unavoidable for most people. Thus, the question is not whether adults will learn science throughout life, but what they will learn. …

Praxis: Gender Matters In Counselor Education And Training: Increasing Gender Awareness In Counselor Education And Training, Reiko Miyakuni Jan 2015

Praxis: Gender Matters In Counselor Education And Training: Increasing Gender Awareness In Counselor Education And Training, Reiko Miyakuni

Counseling Faculty Research

Western society defines male and female sex from physiological attributes (e.g., genitals and chromosomes), this dichotomous view of gender is referred as gender binary.

Problems with Gender Binary

• Variations in sex and gender do not fit in the male/female, masculine/feminine dichotomy (Wiseman & Davidson, 2011).

• Diamond (2002) defined, “gender” is the social and cultural expectation of how females and males should identify themselves, how they think, behave (e.g., ‘typical’ female/male acts in a feminine/masculine ways) and feel (e.g., prefers heterosexual attraction). This gender binary socialization pressure restricts individuals’ potential.

• “Behavior does not have gender, but in today’s …

Ascorbic Acid And Ascorbate-2-Phosphate Decrease Hif Activity And Malignant Properties Of Human Melanoma Cells, Sarah Miles, Adam P. Fischer, Sandeep J. Joshi, Richard M. Niles Jan 2015

Ascorbic Acid And Ascorbate-2-Phosphate Decrease Hif Activity And Malignant Properties Of Human Melanoma Cells, Sarah Miles, Adam P. Fischer, Sandeep J. Joshi, Richard M. Niles

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Background: Hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) is thought to play a role in melanoma carcinogenesis. Posttranslational regulation of HIF-1α is dependent on Prolyl hydroxylase (PHD 1–3) and Factor Inhibiting HIF (FIH) hydroxylase enzymes, which require ascorbic acid as a co-factor for optimal function. Depleted intra-tumoral ascorbic acid may thus play a role in the loss of HIF-1α regulation in melanoma. These studies assess the ability of ascorbic acid to reduce HIF-1α protein and transcriptional activity in metastatic melanoma and reduce its invasive potential.

Methods: HIF-1α protein was evaluated by western blot, while transcriptional activity was measured by HIF-1 HRE-luciferase reporter …

Bacterial Death Results From Mutations Made In Translocation Peptide Of Leucyl-Trna Synthetase, Daniel M. Mcdonough, Layla N. Baykal, Mallory J. Banton, Rachel A. Hellmann-Whitaker

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

The family of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) ensures the fidelity of translation through providing a pool of correctly aminoacylated tRNA products that become incorporated by the ribosome. Leucyl-tRNA synthetase (LeuRS) has two functionally separate domains, one is the aminoacylation domain and the other is the CP1 editing domain. LeuRS can aminoacylate noncognate amino acids, therefore it relies on the CP1 editing domain to hydrolyze misaminoacylated tRNA products before they are released from the enzyme. The LeuRS enzyme must undergo a structural transition state in its reaction cycle in order to translocate the 3' acceptor stem of tRNA 30 Å from the …
